It's nice to see someone is catching mackerel. They still haven't turned up in any significant numbers on the East coast of Ireland. Keep up the good fishing.
Hi Gary new subscriber here been binge watching your videos all week whilst working from home, not much work happening but loving the videos, awesome tight lines pal
Loved this video mate. I have newly got into fishing and spent a lot of time cod fishing during end of last year and start of this year. Now i have my spinning rod set up in time for mackerel coming in this year which is the same rod you are using. Happy now that i have seen someone else use this rod !!
A spinner normally has a loose blade on a clevis and it spins on its own wire, maybe a couple of beads or a weighted body.. Maybe that's a spoon or even a jig..
Thanks, July and August are usually the best depending on the sea conditions and the weather. I think the rain pushes them off shore for a bit but they usually return with the settled weather.
I was going to make a trailer/cart for my mobility scooter last year for macky bashing but got sidetracked I must do it this year when do you expect them coming in so this time I am ready Cheers
They’re coming back through Nova Scotia right now (October 2018) I’m from the middle of the continent and have never ocean fished before. Threw a sabiki rig out and caught one first cast. Minutes later I had 4 on the same rig. Ended up with 12 in less than an hour!! Next day at low tide I had 6!
Have you ever tried changing the treble hook for a single on the lure. I have found that by doing this I get fewer losses, especially when having to get the fish up a long way. Cheers, enjoyed the video.
I've seen a few people snap theirs bringing up bigger fish on the pier but I think they would be ok to use if you are only targeting the smaller fish closer in.
Mackerel Shortage? 7 anglers just spent 4 hours on a boat in Penzance with 4 feathers each and not a single mackerel. Can anyone back up this story about the migration path moving the majority to Iceland? Oh, great video - love spinning a Koster lure off the pier or a trace of 6 feathers. Reminds me of warm summers and a smoking campfire.
Isle of Wight - spent most of the summer hitting usually 'hot spots' but not a one - same went for most of the others close by (Fort Victoria, Freshwater Bay and Cowes sea wall) :-(
Fishing in the UK aye , i had them on blyth pier last week & its was mayhem , daylights & weights flying all over ! Is there anywhere you know of local that is quiet & you can spin ? I took them to cullernose but it was really windy a bit of a swell on so we just turned around
When the mackerel are fully in I usually get them from the first part of shield pier its usually not to bad on that part because its mostly people just spinning from that bit you can also get them from shields little beach next to the groyne If you take a look at my beach fishing play list its the video named summer beach fishing - mackerel & flounder. You can see where I mean.
Yes you can use it to catch mackerel. I use my LRF rod rated 3 to 12g with a 12g spinner aswell. You just have to be careful getting the mackerel out the water because theres always the risk of snapping your rod mate.
The first part of the pier is the least snaggy from the brigade hut up to the first gate. I've got a video on from a few years back of shaun and his mate catching some decent cod just down from the first gate. Marker 44 used to be the least snaggy but I haven't fished there for a while I'm not sure if the lobster pots are still around there.
Now that they are in you can usually catch them from the end in most settled conditions. Fishing the flood is usually the best along with first and last light.
You don't need a licence for sea fishing unless you plan to fish for salmon or sea trout. You will need a rod licence if you plan on doing any fresh water fishing.
Great stuff.. just come back from the fish quay and got myself some nice fat mackerel...4 big ones on 1 super reliable shiney silver rig....keep the vids coming fella 😃
Liam Rainbow I was about 20 meters down from the fueling cabinet type thing just in North shields....I was there this morning at 4.45 and caught around 11 smaller one's and some eels ...5hrs of fun haha
kayaking northeast I tried tonite at where u said had no joy when tide was coming in about 2 hours before high tide .any tips would be appreciated thanks
Liam Rainbow that's why it's called fishing and not catching haha.. I've been plenty of times and not caught anything but some days you get loads,, just keep at it and you will get some 🎣
Hi Mario it was a German brand i cant remember the name but i wouldn't recommend it because it kept getting wind knots in it and tangling on the eyes of the rod when casting. I have stripped it off a couple of my reels and went back to using mono and spiderwire braid.
Just a bit of constructive criticism, stop trying to land fish by pulling the last few feet up by hand, use your rod and flick them up, saw you do it a couple of times but then you went back to pulling them up by hand, great video thanks for sharing

what a nice place to fish good vid mate nice mackeys well done liverpool
Thanks Paul.
nice and fresh for the pan..and always eat before the next tide
first mackerel of the year is better than Christmas, cheers
Don't you just love it when they drop off at the wall. There will be thousands Mackie bashing on the pier now, look what you just started 🐟🐟🐟👍 . Alan
Aye I was gutted it looked a canny size from the top. I was in two minds whether or not to put the vid on lol
Well done Gary. Not much yet on Irish east coast at moment. West coast is heaving with them!
Thanks Dave.
Hi Gary new subscriber here been binge watching your videos all week whilst working from home, not much work happening but loving the videos, awesome tight lines pal
Hi Rupert, thanks glad you're enjoying the videos. Tight lines mate.
Nice one Gary, I like that dispatch method as well. Nice and quick.Great video as usual 👍
Thanks Gary.

Thanks mate, its a great rod to use ive caught alsorts on mine.
Good sized fish man,Well done Ally
Thanks Ally.
i miss fishing for macks, they used to be so plentiful here off the coast of long island....seem to be totally gone now
nice vid btw!
Thanks 42042KAT.
Love it ❤
A spinner normally has a loose blade on a clevis and it spins on its own wire, maybe a couple of beads or a weighted body.. Maybe that's a spoon or even a jig..
Went on the pier on Tuesday no luck lost loads of gear good few people there the same
I think the seas been a bit rough lately. Hopefully when the sea settles a bit they will be back in.
Great Video.
Have a good day everyone ❤️❤️❤️
Spinning for mackerel on light gear is great fun, not seen many here yet though hopefully soon
Cant understand people useing beachcasters to catch mackerel nice light spinning rod is more fun
North Shields is the place to be like
Fishing hi Gary just thought you would like to know this video is trending bud so congrats mate. 👍🏻✌🏻
Thanks Iain.
I just got my first catch of this year on the pier at Ayr, 5 in one :) :) and I caught it on my first fishing video
Excellent, looked like they put a canny bend in your rod.
Cheers man :) yeah there was a good fish on but when I was bringing it in they rattled of the side of the pier and he fell off 😣😣
Aye I've lost a few to the side of the pier wall as well ĺol.
Was going to have a look down later on today for a an hour or 2 what would you recommend using spinners or daylights ?
spinners for the sport, daylights if you want to catch more.
Good job 👍
Thanks.
Must of been a whopper that one that broke free....certainly put a bend in your rod!
Great video, what months are best to fish mackerel from shields pier? Went a couple of weeks back caught loads but nothing the past week
Thanks, July and August are usually the best depending on the sea conditions and the weather. I think the rain pushes them off shore for a bit but they usually return with the settled weather.
great video enjoyed
Good
Whey aye canny Mackerel like
nice one :)
I was going to make a trailer/cart for my mobility scooter last year for macky bashing but got sidetracked I must do it this year when do you expect them coming in so this time I am ready Cheers
Hopefully round about June.
Thanks
Great Fishing bro
Thanks Kilian.

Thanks Roger. I sometime change the trebble for a circle hook they work quite well.
Daiwa is good spinning!
I have same but ultralight 5-15g
Dis you have hooks before the spinner??? How do you set this up looks intresting
Yeah I had 2 sabiks tied to the leader then a spinner tied to them for the weight.
Good stuff.
Thanks.
Went down to blyth quayside yesterday with some feathers but there wasn’t any kicking about there but just wondering how far were you casting
About 20 to 30 yards Joel.
Have got problem with the reel.and what lure is it thanks
I was using a Nordic herring lure.
No bait used for mackerel and sand eals Gary?
No mate just lures.
Enjoyed watching your video! Interesting move at the end.
Cheers
I live in California and our mackeral have much wider mouths and a lighter coloring. Wish i had your mackeral must taste great!
Yeah mate they taste good.
Would a light weight telescopic rod be ok for fishing in South Shields thx
I've seen a few people snap theirs bringing up bigger fish on the pier but I think they would be ok to use if you are only targeting the smaller fish closer in.
Thanks
Another good video Gary.. what time were you on the pier? What set up did you use?
Thanks Andy. From 05:30 Diawa 7-35g spinning rod, Shimano Sienna 4000 reel, 15lb braid, 10lb mono, couple of sabiks and a 30g Nordic heron spinner.
Looks like a nice spot :)
Can you remember the date (or roughly) when you got that first fish of the year? Cheers.
I think it was in June

What time of year is best for sand eels?
Around my area June, July and August are usually the best months.
2 x feathers and a perk eh ? , fkn love it .
221 ? .
Aye, 2 sabikis and a metal.
Gary: Why you hoist the fish, grabbing the line by hand, instead as a normal man?
because the rod might snap.
I was wandering the same your more likely to loose the fish like that just get it up with the rod u wont snap a rod from one mackerel thats rediculas
Great videos , is it safe enough to take the kids spinning on south shields pier ?
Thanks Ian, it used to be ok but I think with all the weights flying about now its a bit dodgy.
Fishing in the UK aye , i had them on blyth pier last week & its was mayhem , daylights & weights flying all over ! Is there anywhere you know of local that is quiet & you can spin ? I took them to cullernose but it was really windy a bit of a swell on so we just turned around

Fishing in the UK Cheers , me & the kids have been watching your videos this morning ! Quality stuff 👍
Whats about now ? Catch out on spinner ?
Were in Wales u going fishing to
Anglesey.
I've a dawia BG 5 to 25g rod could I use this to catch mackreel with say a 12g spoon?
Yes you can use it to catch mackerel. I use my LRF rod rated 3 to 12g with a 12g spinner aswell. You just have to be careful getting the mackerel out the water because theres always the risk of snapping your rod mate.
@@fishingintheukgarywood thanks man.
@@fishingintheukgarywood might be a silly question but I have a 20lb boat rod. Can this be used for casting off a pier with a heavy lure?
Is there any good spots where you don’t get snagged mate, cheers (cod fishing)
The first part of the pier is the least snaggy from the brigade hut up to the first gate. I've got a video on from a few years back of shaun and his mate catching some decent cod just down from the first gate. Wht time and tides are best and wind conditions for fishing mackerel on the pier m8
Now that they are in you can usually catch them from the end in most settled conditions. Fishing the flood is usually the best along with first and last light.
Hi Gary, when does mackerel season start?
Usually around the beginning of June if the weather stays settled.
Some decent mackerel 👍🏼
Where in Wales are you heading? I'm well over due a coastal fishing trip...
Tight lines
Thanks. Anglesey in north wales. Tight lines
Gary wood aaaaah holy head
Yes
Is this up Sunderland?
South shields pier.
Not bad pal
Can you catch cod with a spinner?
Yes
Whats the best bait for mackerel? If ur using bobber/floater?
A strip of Mackerel or a sandeel.
Fishing in the UK what about herring? Thats what i use but i cant say that i catch more than one mackerel
Yes herring as well, I think they would take most baits but I think a strip of mackerel belly would work better.
Why havnt you got a drop net pal ?
I should get one, would probably be better than handballing the fish up.
Will fishing tomorrow on the pier be good
Depends on the weather. High tide will probably be your best bet for mackerel.
cheers gary
and do you think the same lure that you used would be good
Yeah they seem to be good for mackerel.
Also where is the fishing shop is it dean road or the one in hebburn
What size weight is best with feathers ?????
What ever size your rod is rated to cast.
If I will be fishing in U.K. Do I need a license or just get my rod end go out fishing in sea
You don't need a licence for sea fishing unless you plan to fish for salmon or sea trout. You will need a rod licence if you plan on doing any fresh water fishing.
Thanks man
did need any fishing lisence for that place?
No not for there.
Would a drop net not be handy?
Aye it would come in handy.
Hi, what weight of rod do you use please?
Hi, the one i was using in the video is 7 - 35g
Fishing in the UK Great I was looking at one of the HTO rods. Seems decent value for money
great video. Whats the best part of the tide to fish for mackerel? I try for an hour or two after low water. What do you think?
Thanks aljotock. A few hours before high tide when the sea is settled is usually quite good along with first and last light.
WHAT ROD YOU USING IN THIS PLEASE BRO? 🤙🤙🤙
Daiwa bg spinning rod.
awesome video lol those were some good mackerels n they were bending the rod haha
Thanks.
Great stuff.. just come back from the fish quay and got myself some nice fat mackerel...4 big ones on 1 super reliable shiney silver rig....keep the vids coming fella 😃
Thanks kayaking northeast.

Is this in Aberdeen
No in the north east of England.
Beautiful cache man
Do you need a license for fishing in the see?
Thanks Roby. No you don't need a licence for fishing in the sea.
What was your rod and reel? And what is the gram ratio. Great vid man! Unfortunate that some of the blighters got off.
Thanks Angus. Diawa 7-35g rod and shimano sienna 4000 reel
Where is it?
South Shields.
Gary wood
Thank u
That rod is going to snap
Hi what braid do you use if i can ask? Thanks :)
Hi Mario it was a German brand i cant remember the name but i wouldn't recommend it because it kept getting wind knots in it and tangling on the eyes of the rod when casting. I have stripped it off a couple of my reels and went back to using mono and spiderwire braid.
Gary wood thanks for your reply. I am having the same problem with HTO braid. Thanks ;)
Nothing worse than losing them at the wall, well unless you're losing them to seals.
Yeah I agree, luckily we don’t have many seals getting to them on my local pier.
Glad you said at the end that you were going to use them as fresh bait, because that's what they are. 🎣🇦🇺
Just a bit of constructive criticism, stop trying to land fish by pulling the last few feet up by hand, use your rod and flick them up, saw you do it a couple of times but then you went back to pulling them up by hand, great video thanks for sharing
Tucker yeah I tried to hand line em up and got 2 hooks in my hand 😂😂😂fuckin sucked
