In the fact of history Nurbanu has no influence on selim to take the throne. Selim became a sultan because he is the only heir left after his all brothers die. When selim became a sultan he give mihrimah his sister as valide sultan which is outranked Nurbanu until murad became the next sultan and nurbanu became valide sultan. We can say nurbanu is not similar enaugh to mihrimah also hurrem as a first haseki sultan.
While her spouse Selim was still a şehzade, Nurbanu was the head of his princely harem at Manisa. Once he became sultan, Selim let his favorite wife, the haseki Nurbanu, remain at the Topkapı Palace throughout his reign, Even after Selim began to take other concubines, Nurbanu persisted as a favorite for her beauty and intelligence. As the mother of the heir-apparent, she acted as an advisor to her husband. Although it was far from normal at the time, Selim II would often ask Nurbanu for her advice on various subjects because of his respect for her good judgment. The Venetian ambassador Jacopo Soranzor reported:
became a formidable figure with far-reaching influence during this time. According to some sources (mostly Venetian accounts), her influence was such that Nurbanu Sultan effectively ran the government alongside the Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. Selim handed over almost all of his power to Sokollu, who did indeed rule the empire in his stead. Nurbanu did not intervene directly in politics, however there is no doubt that she consulted regularly with Sokollu. When Selim II's reign ended in 1574, the haseki Nurbanu received 1,100 aspers a day, while Selim's other consorts, each the mother of a son, received only 40 aspers. In addition, Selim repeatedly, publicly stated that Murad was his heir, thus securing the position of his firstborn son and sentencing his other sons to death. Selim, to emphasize that there was only one woman for him, also legally married Nurbanu. Ambassadorial accounts date the marriage to the beginning of 1571 and conveyed the news with the remark that Selim wanted to express by marriage how much he loved Nurbanu and that his only legitimate heir was their son, Murad

Some information about Nurbanu in general and her rivalry with Safiye. Real life facts: I want to underline some information due to the wide misrepresentation by Magnificent Century. Safiye was never as intimidated as the show made her be, nor was she so blunt with Nurbanu. In actuality, Nurbanu dominated her during her lifetime and restricted her influence. Safiye was even banished during half of Murad's reign. Murad loved his mother more than any other woman in his life, even Safiye herself. He made "Valide" an actual political rank and listened to every advice she gave him. Her son had so much respect towards her, no other sultan did, she was equal to him and demonstrated this on several occasions. In 1582, she deposed grand vizier Sinan paşa who openly opposed her, he was later assassinated. Even after Nurbanu's death, with her will çanfeda kethüda hatun was appointed as supreme head of harem and was basically de-facto Valide sultan, restricting even more power from Safiye. Nurbanu's death is until this day a mystery. She was woman who deeply loved and favoured Venice, so much that she even threatened kapudan killiç ali paşa for suggesting war against Venetians and promoted trades. Her politics were so pro-Venetian that she was hated by the Republic of Genoa. Some say she was poisoned by a Genoese agent. HOWEVER this has NEVER been confirmed. Her death is a mystery, She ruled Manisa alongside Selim. Her and Mihrimah never hated each other. During Selim's reign she ruled his harem and was working on her own businesses (since Mihrimah was extremely wealthy), while Nurbanu was involved with politics, charity, influence, making connections etc. Both women were enjoying luxury and had different roles during Selim's reign. After Selim's death, that's when she was able to access her power fully and Mihrimah went to live in the old Palace, until her death. Although Mihrimah and Nurbanu never fought nor opposed each other, her daughter Ayşe Hümaşah was part of Safiye’s clique, so against Nurbanu. Safiye did not take her down, Mihrimah did not take her down (she died before Nurbanu did), nor did she hate her, Hurrem and Nurbanu were like mother and daughter. The show portrayed everything so wrong for the sake of drama, Safiye as some bold concubine and Nurbanu as someone who would allow a person to talk to her like that. None of this is true. No. Selim gave 95% of his power to sukkulo. Nurbanu only used to take information from him. Nurbanu's power in divan started when Murad became sultan. As a haseki Nurbanu's power isn't highlighted much. Mihrimah became Valide and outranked her. She used invest in most of Selim's campaigns and jansccaries salary. You are absolutely right. In Turkey, there was even propaganda that the Ottoman women's sultanate had started to decline. Safiye should not be underestimated. During her time, the army and bureaucracy were almost under this woman's control. Kösem Sultan threatened to cut off her head by a high-level bureaucrat. Both Safiye and Nurbanu established good relations with Venice. This increases the possibility that both of them were Venetian. However, recent studies suggest that Nurbanu could be Greek and that she lied about her own past. It is not known how true this is. However, being so close to Venice greatly increases the possibility that she was Venetian. We also see this in Handan Sultan. In fact, we do not know exactly who she was. However, during her time as Valide Sultan, many Bosnians rose to the top. This makes historians guess that Handa was Bosnian. However, I would like to touch on one issue. None of these women could be as intellectual as Hurrem Sultan. Kosemin Safiye and Nurbanun had intellectual Jewish and Christian friends around them, and they even managed the European Ottoman politics through these women. However, despite living in the palace for so long, their Ottoman Turkish is very bad. Kosem Sultan's letters are full of grammatical errors. I am not judging them. After all, it is not their mother tongue. They had to learn this language, but it is not normal for it to be this bad despite the long time that passed. Of course, this is not their fault. The male sultans did not allow the female sultans to take on an intellectual identity. Hurrem Sultan, on the other hand, writes letters as if she were a Turk, as if it were her mother tongue. Knowing Turkish like that at that time, especially knowing Ottoman Turkish, would get you through a class. Hürrem's greatest luck was that her husband was Süleyman. Safiye Nurbanu and Kösem's children and male spouses could not reach Süleyman's level. However, these women saved a collapsing state. They did not only save it, they also gave this state an identity. The construction of baths, schools and mosques increased during this period. They managed to communicate with the people. This was a revolution in such a male-dominated society. Moreover, these women did not come from such a noble and rich background. They started their lives very badly and reached the top. These women are a hundred times superior to any European female monarch.

Shame we only see Selim as Sultan for a few minutes, couldn't it have an episode or a few. I really wish we could have Nurbanu's reaction and transition, especially her taking over the Valide's chamber.
Sultan Selim was a good king .He atleast didnt forget his brother Prince Mustafa and Mahidevran hatun after becoming king .He helped her in constructing the tomb
A good king? Not really. He was the reason for the beginning of the downfall of the ottoman empire. He used his treasure in drinks and luxury. But was he a good brother? Yes.
Selim was a good person and what he did for mahidevran and Mustafa was very nice. But he was still a drunkard and not a very good ruler. He didn't even want to be the sultan himself, but there was nobody else left Mustafa would have been a much better ruler. Or even bayezid. Being a good person doesn't mean you'll be a good ruler
@@lepakshijaideep222 Although Selim's personal behavior and military setbacks are often highlighted, his reign also saw important territorial gains, economic stability, and effective administration. Thus, while Selim II may not be remembered as a great ruler, his period of rule was not entirely devoid of accomplishments. As for Mustafa and Beyezid - neither of the two would have been good rules.

Selim was a failure of a Sultan, but not sure if this can be considered the downfall of the Empire because it continued expanding (massively under Turhan's son Mehmet IV) I guess Sokullu Mehmet Pasha should be considered "An Uncrowned Sultan." Because he was the actual Ruler in Selim's reign which witness expansion in the Empire.
Historians now tend to look more favorably on his reign. Suleiman would be a tough act to follow for anybody. The downfall of the Ottoman empire can be attributed to many things For example,- Failure to be able to secure their very vast borders - Failure to expand to the Americas - Growing super powers of Russia and Europe - new established trade routes, thus eliminating tax revenue for the Ottomans. All of these contributed to the inevitable downfall of the empire, it had nothing to do with individual people.
you cant say that selim reign was a failure when the empire still lived for another 348 t years if I'm not mistaken, and about sokollu, yes you are right thanks to him that selim reign has some expansion.

Mustafa was not innocent. He did things he was not supposed to do. Kept defying his father and acting on his own. Be it his marriage,, or even saving people from pirates by himself. And then,, there is the fact that he kept people around who openly advocated and promoted "Mustafa era". Mustafa knew that. ANd he still didn't disassociated from those people. He listened to them.
Nurbanu has no right to wear Hurrem Sultana’s emerald ring! It belongs to Mihrrimah!!!

No. Selim gave 95% of hi she power to sukkulo. Nurbanu only used to take information from him. Nurbanu's power in divan started when Murad became sultan.
He didn't even want to be the sultan himself, but there was nobody else left
Mustafa would have been a much better ruler.

If mirimah knew what a snake safiye would become, she would have prevented the alliance with Murad. Pity.

I wish the book had existed. It would be interesting to read.
Which episode is this
Selim was a failure of a Sultan, but not sure if this can be considered the downfall of the Empire because it continued expanding (massively under Turhan's son Mehmet IV)
I guess Sokullu Mehmet Pasha should be considered "An Uncrowned Sultan." Because he was the actual Ruler in Selim's reign which witness expansion in the Empire.
She was absolutely not the downfall of the empire, despite what people claim.
Historians now tend to look more favorably on his reign. Suleiman would be a tough act to follow for anybody. The downfall of the Ottoman empire can be attributed to many things
For example,- Failure to be able to secure their very vast borders
- Failure to expand to the Americas
- Growing super powers of Russia and Europe
- new established trade routes, thus eliminating tax revenue for the Ottomans.
All of these contributed to the inevitable downfall of the empire, it had nothing to do with individual people.
you cant say that selim reign was a failure when the empire still lived for another 348 t years if I'm not mistaken, and about sokollu, yes you are right thanks to him that selim reign has some expansion.

What happened to Mirihmah?
In reality (history) she didn't go anywhere...instead! She helped her brother selim to rule the world with her suggestions and great ideas.....She was also given the title of valida sultan and ruled the harem by his brother's will
The show was probably made by men becuz they literally butchered all the powerful female leaders in the show. The same can be said about kosem sultan, there are so many inaccuracies in that show as well like murad died of a disease but the show makers for some reason accredited his death to kosem poisoning him, they also don't show murad caging his brothers and slaughtering them slowly and they don't show the tyranny of Ibrahim either which made it necessary for kosem to dethrone him. People are ofc dumb, they take this work of fiction as absolute truth and hate on real life people becuz of fictional characters esp the men. The show just blames women for what the men did by shifting narratives, like how in reality suleiman killed Mustafa becuz he considered him a threat and people act like hurrem was the reason. Tho I love both of these shows, the actors the sound affects the clothing all of it is top notch but lets be real the story line is just unnecessary drama, inaccuracies and I consider it propaganda lol. These sultanas used to do a lot of work outside of the harem, like being advisors, charity work, they all were taught politics philosophy and what not and all this show portrays is fictional drama. The most laughable of them all is the fan made trope of kosem vs hurrem made by the fandom, becuz no way did u just bring down two most powerful sultanas of one of the greatest dynasty to a petty "whos better" fight, unnecessarily disrespecting them and that too through inaccuracies portrayed from this work of fiction, if kosem and hurrem were alive they would probably laugh at u all lmao.
