Thanks for the video. My grandfather grew many, many fig trees n NY when I was growing up. He always wrapped them in cardboard (or whatever was at hand) and filled the centers with dead leaves to overwinter. We had figs, figs and more figs growing up and took them for granted and did not appreciate them. Now I miss them terribly. I am in zone 3-4 and would like to find a variety to try. But I will wrap and insulate them like he did. Our yard was filled with enormous fig trees.

We moved into our new home last September and found out we have a fig tree/bush on the side of the house. We live in West Texas it has been there for years because it is HUGE. At least 20+ feet across maybe 7ft high. It sits in full sun only gets shade when the sun goes down, it actually creates its own shade my dogs relax next to it when they're outside.

That's awesome! Every time we plant trees, we wind up moving just as they're getting big. So this year I was like, "I ain't planting another tree for someone else!" ;'D and I bought a bunch and put them in containers. Obviously those can only get so big, but at least I can take them with me!
Anyway, I had no idea that figs spread like that horizontally. I'm glad you shared that! How many figs you think you get off that bad boy? Probably more than you can eat, right?

This is what I do in zone 6b. The figs are in 5 gal fabric pots. I cut slits around the sides of of the pot. “ see Lou Monti method “ dig a hole and drop the pot in and fill around the edges with soil. I double up heavy black landscaping material and place around the plant. Then I cover that with a 2 foot square of bricks. The heat from the sun heats up the bricks and landscape material keeping them warmer. Heat is what your looking for to get that fig tree growing. At the end of the season, I dig around the pot with a machete, cut the roots that formed outside the pot and pull up the pot and store it for winter. Use will get a larger more productive tree then in pots alone and you won’t need to fertile as much or water.

I live in the United Arab Emirates (USDA Zone 11b) and I have had tremendous success growing figs here! I have two trees, about two years old and they fruit exponentially year-round! The one thing I have noticed with them is that they go through growing cycles. In winter, they will completely stop growing, however, the fruit will continue to ripen, and then in spring, the older leaves will dry up and fall off, and new leaves will start to grow, as well as new figs. Unfortunately, as soon as the figs begin to ripen, the birds will eat them. I rarely ever get to eat any of my figs! Last year, I covered the unripe figs with aluminium foil, and the birds didn't even touch them, but now, they will just rip right through the foil and eat all that wonderful fruit!

If you have an early freeze, you can mulch w/straw at the bottom of the tree & cover it w/a plastic trash bag or a sheet to protect it. My mother taught me this when we would have occasional freezes in florida. I have a fig tree, but so far I don't have any figs on it. I thought I might when it had little noddles on it, but nothing ever happened. It started to go over because of the weight of the leaves & branches, so I had to prune it. I live in Tennessee, but we do have a person here who has an orange tree in their front yard, so far, it hasn't died yet & I thought for sure it would die the first year, but it did not. (my fig tree is in a container, because I put it in the garage in the winter)

Any idea what causes the leaves of the fig to turn brown?

I had no idea a fig was a tree- I planted mine thinking it was going to be a bush 😂 whoops. I’m slowly learning I should watch the video BEFORE buying the plants 😂- thanks.

I'm curious what you might think about root restriction for fig trees? i'm seeing some recommendations (mainly from the UK) to build a planting pit or otherwise restrict the fig roots to promote better fruit production and i wonder if you have thoughts on that strategy? "Restricting root growth encourages fruiting. Either dig out a planting pit or grow figs in containers on the patio, or plunged into the soil. Prepare a planting pit by digging a hole 60 x 60 x 60cm (2 x 2 x 2ft). Line the sides with vertical slabs, with 2.5cm (1in) higher than the surrounding soil to prevent the roots from spreading outwards. Add a layer of rubble or broken bricks and crocks 10-20cm (4-8in) deep, in the base."

I would love to hear more about this.

Fig trees are hardy and will do well in zone 6.
The only question is if the growing season in your region is long enough for the fruits to ripen.

just in time, my two "figlings" greener up well indoors over winter and soon need to go out side - was told to plant them out after any frost danger. Now we had 80s already, but this week looks just 60s, so I will wait a little, may be just set the pots against the house. Need to find the right place for them anyway 😊

All my figs die each spring and start growing from the bottom. I live in Raleigh area, NC, which is zone 7b. I have several varieties of fig trees: Chicago, Brown Turkey, Mission, LSU. "Chicago" is rated for zone 6 and up. Looks like they all survive a winter, because in a spring I do see the green bulbs, like it's about to get the leaves out. But something happens, it dies and starts growing from the bottom. I don't have a clay soil, in fact, I have an excellent soil, because there was a former tobacco field. Peaches and apples are going excellently. One fig tree grows about 5ft tall in 1 summer and it's so said to see its dying in the spring.
    Any idea why it's happening?

Luke, is it safe to plant fig trees (and mulberry trees) close to a house? I've heard of invasive roots damaging foundations and sewage pipes.

Hi. I did receive my fig tree and have planted it about three weeks ago. The leafs have started getting brown spots on them. I know it had one or two spots when I got it but thought this may be because it was shipped in a dark box for awhile. What do you recommend for my fig friend?

In NYC, my grandparents would cover up their fig trees with burlap or old carpet to protect them from the cold winters we use to have.
I have a.fig tree in my garden,I never cover it up.
Maybe you should do a follow up on growing s tree from a cutting.

A raised bed is not the best place in the winter time. The frost can hit the roots even better.
