Thank you so much for the valuable information and your willingness to share your experience. Just did my belts this morning using your video and I was surprised how simple it actually is. Saved me hundreds and hundreds of pounds. Thank you 😊
just changed the belts on my 98 900ss it was really easy. The only thing I did differently was to remove the clutch cover and rotate the engine by turning the clutch with the spark plugs out (mine is a dry clutch model so I took the opportunity to blow the dust out of the clutch) Great video, really helpful, especially the tip on using the hex keys to check belt tension. Thanks.
Thank you so much for putting these videos out!! I have saved so much money in keeping my Monster 620 tuned up on my own, and avoided expensive bills at the bike shops.
@Keiron while at TDCf, the camshaft is not trying to open any valves. While not at TDC, when the cam is trying to open a valve, the helper springs put a bit of force on the belt, which will alter the frequency reading.
How did you get the top pulley to stay still? Mine kept wanting to turn back against the springs. Also, if you move the horizontal pulley on accident, can you just simply move it back in alignment? Thanks Chris!
Thank you! Just did my multi 620. What a sense of accomplishment. Had to change tension rollers as well they were seized. And the tension was very very low. But surprisingly she ran pretty good. Tension method. Was easy and felt very comfortable doing it that way. Would like to try a four valve. But would need a few more tools. Thanks again.
I used this video to learn how to change my cam belts on my 1997 Monster. It was all I needed. Finished the job with great success. The only thing I was wondering about is what torque setting should the tensioner securing bolts be tightened to?
@Snagglbeast : When the dots align, the horizontal / lower / front cylinder is at TDC. Vertical cylinder TDC is 90 degrees of crank rotation back from this.
Thank you for this video. It’s not a very technically challenging job but it sure gets the heart pounding at the moment of truth. I was scared as hell in a good way but now it feels amazing to have done it myself.
Check your throttle idle toggle on the left handgrip. My 02 750 has one for warming up, it will stall at idle until it is warmed up, so I can adjust the idle RPM with this
Chris I somehow knocked the crankshaft off the mark. Prolly it was in gear when I moved it. Do I just rotate the rear wheel to line it back up? As long as the marks line up,is it good to go,or is it every two revolutions?
Nice video. btw how are you cranking the engine on he left side of the case? Did you have to remove the case cover and manually rotate the flywheel or are you turning the front sprocket some how?
Ive heard the newer DS engines have tighter belt tension. Instaed of a 5-6mm allen used for tension a 3-4mm should be used.... Does this sound right? Thanks
From your replies 8mm thread (not hex key) into aluminium would be 8 ft/ lbs. Into steel obviously you can torque them higher, but interesting that on the engine you are working on ( I don't know if this is all 2V engines) there are helicoils. Obviously this engine has either had its threads stripped or helicoils are standard. Many thanks for your reply.
I think it would be useful if you could also zoom on the part measuring the tension with the 5mm allen, to see where to slide it precisely. Anyway, great series. Thank you very much.
Hello Chris. How much is easier is it to service a Street Triple compared to a Monster 796? My concerns on the Duc are the desmodromic valve adjustment, the timing belt maintenance/replacement and the air-cooling shortcomes. The Street Triple (at least the first ones) suffered from a malfunctioning cam chain tensioner and it seems some leaked from the cylinder head. Any tips? Much appreciated.
Cool, I've just come across your videos, will be considering doing this myself. I have some research to do before I try it, but you do give me confidence
Just had a question that may have been answered already. How do you rotate the gears to align them with the notches on the case? I had my bike on a stand and put it in first to rotate the rear wheel but it wouldn't budge.
Great Video - I have just done mine :). Bike is running well... just a thought though... If I did get it one tooth out, would i know about it? (What would the side effects be... Im assuming pretty drastic and the bike would not start etc)?
Do all 2v engines have their tensioner bolt holes helicoiled? My vertical tensioner bolt hole threads (single hole bolt, not the bolt that runs on the tensioner track) are stripped really bad and I'm wondering if I can timesert the hole, but I'm not sure if they have already been factory helicoiled. Thanks! FYI my bike is '00 M750
Hello! How much is torque to tighten timing belt tensioner bolts ? I have Haynes manual, but there is not specs on that. My Ducati's have 6mm bolts. Thnk x)
***** , hey Chris, I am ordering some stuff and doing my belts again. Just a quick reminder. Remove plugs, put the engine on TDC of the compression stroke (all the marks line up) and then remove belts and put new ones.. am I correct?
Hi There I have a 1993 Monster and the Vertical and horizontal pulleys have a lip on them which would stop the belt from slipping off . It also hampers putting a new belts on . It has been suggested online that I prise the lip off the pulley and then the belts will slip on . I have tried this an I am wondering what amount of force would you suggest to remove this lip or Disc as some people call it . Great Video by the way!!!!!
Have you got a "How To" video to do the same thing on the 999 Testestretta engine ? And I live in Australia, so it's always warm here and good riding weather, so you're welcome to live in my garage! :)
I read that the vertical timing belt can be 1mm looser. So you should be able to slide a 6mm through but not a 7. You did just the 5mm on both. Do you know which way it should be?
what tensions the belt? Is the Hex that is the lock down the tension-er? I have the covers off but I am unsure on how I will get the belt tight. I have a 2002 Monster 750. Thank you, jusride7.
I have done exactly as he says, but now my engine stalls when it's on idle. First I thought that I did something wrong, and therefore I removed the belts and installed them again, but i experiencing the same problem with the idle. Does any one have a guess what could be wrong? I have a Monster 750 -99
Thank you for the video. Question though. I have a monster 695 (just for FYI) but I accidentally removed the belts without marking them, so as long as I line up all 3 of these marks, I can slide the belts back on and run with no issues correct?
Hey do you have a video on the timing belt change on a Ducati 1098, if you do can you please post the link, I couldn't find it. You do have great videos thank you. I own a 1098 so if you could please post more videos on 1098, thank you.
I'm sorry we don't have one for the 1098 as we don't own that bike to do a vid on. The 749/999 video we have is comparable just a little different in body work.
@piszker123 For standard fasteners, Ducati books reference standard engineering values for metric screws into aluminum. General rule is 5 ft-lb for 5mm screws and 6 ft-lb for 6mm screws. See the corresponding column in the table on this page engineershandbook [dot] com/Tables/torque1.htm
i just pulled the belt covers off of my 13' 1100 monster. the belts seem fairly loose to me, is there a difference between it and the older ones, is this because the belt is "broken in" i can literally slide the belt half way off of the cam pulley. it has 3800 miles on it and runs great no trouble ever
thanks for the reply long time motorcycle mechanic, first experience with ducati. it is a bit different than i am accustomed to.... a few things that i'm not familiar with but, i am learning your videos have been very helpful for me i'll be sure to order my belts from you when i they are due to be replaced. do you also stock valve shims? according to your video i could be looking at some adjustments there in the near future as well.
jason bartley it's best to email us for support at orders@ca-cycleworks.com as conversations are hard to keep up with on youtube comments. We refer shim purchases to shop at our friend emsduc.com
I used this guide for my early 900ss injection three years ago. I changed my belts again yesterday and the old belts still looked excellent, so this method of tensioning belts works well.
+Alex Kirby BTW, to add: the 696, 796, 1000, and 1100 engines have ability to lock the cams in position. This isn't for the valve adjustment but instead for the ensuing timing belt reinstall. There is a bolt cap on the left side of the head (opposite the belts) and then a pin can be threaded into the cam to index it in proper position for alignment when installing belts.
@RicardoSS85 : You're asking a Ducati lunatic this question? Of course the 796 is my answer. ;) Actually, the latest monsters are great handling bikes and the air cooled engine with the belts are super reliable. Desmo valves bed in by 10000~15000 miles and if you're not on the rev limiter all the time, the valves won't need adjusting again.
sh*t, setting the belts on this thing looks easy as hell, i'm lookin for a m900 right now. if you wanna talk PITA, look at a ford 4.6 dohc timing, or even sohc for that matter.. lol.
It could be a bent valve. Give us a call 619-501-2466 to talk with Chris if you still need help with this. Sorry we didn't get to this sooner, but RUclips comments are on the back burner while we work through the summer time rush at our shop.
When was this video made? Sorry, it was one of the earlier ones. I could have not made it and waited a decade or two until the average smart phone does better HD than AV equipment did 480p.
Thank you so much for the valuable information and your willingness to share your experience. Just did my belts this morning using your video and I was surprised how simple it actually is. Saved me hundreds and hundreds of pounds. Thank you 😊

@xeroxoid: M6 gets 6 ft-lbs or 72 in-lbs. I recommend using an inch pound meter where 72 is not in the upper or lower 10% of the tool's range.
Check your throttle idle toggle on the left handgrip. My 02 750 has one for warming up, it will stall at idle until it is warmed up, so I can adjust the idle RPM with this
I own a 2012 Monster 795. Thank you for a clear explanation. Higher resolution video would help further.

Can you please explain to me why should someone choose a ducati. Instead of other bikes? Just curious, thanks
Is it possible to replace that belt with a chain? My father told me that its a lot more expensive than when you got a bike with a chain.
Ok...so what's the point of setting the top cylinder at TDC? The tension on the belts don't change.
Great Video - I have just done mine :). Bike is running well... just a thought though... If I did get it one tooth out, would i know about it? (What would the side effects be... Im assuming pretty drastic and the bike would not start etc)?
YAY for Chris! Explained most nicely & stuff.

Hello do you know when changing the timing belts on a 999 were the dot's on the cover's or do I just use the left side were the gasket is???

***** , hey Chris, I am ordering some stuff and doing my belts again. Just a quick reminder. Remove plugs, put the engine on TDC of the compression stroke (all the marks line up) and then remove belts and put new ones.. am I correct?
Marlon Argueta Yep that is correct!
The tensioner bolts are 8mm thread and there are steel helicoils installed in the cylinders.
For the belt tension, can I apply this allen key method also to a 95 750 engine?
Cheers, Chris

+Karla Poulton All technicians I talk to will use edge cutters to remove the lip. It is a thin ring of metal pressed onto edge of sprocket.
Have you got a "How To" video to do the same thing on the 999 Testestretta engine ? And I live in Australia, so it's always warm here and good riding weather, so you're welcome to live in my garage! :)
Is the 4v engine on the new hypermotard as great as everyone claims compared to the 2v?
In the video you use 20 ft/lbs torque, in your replies to comments you say 6 ft/lbs. can you inform us the correct setting please??
I read that the vertical timing belt can be 1mm looser. So you should be able to slide a 6mm through but not a 7. You did just the 5mm on both. Do you know which way it should be?
+timjr2500 I didn't read that, so I can't comment on the source. I share the practices I use when maintaining my own Ducatis.
Awesome vid, thinking about getting a hypermotard but changing the belts always put me off ducati, this doesn't look too difficult...
+Imperial Maniac Yes, also look at the cam locking tool, which makes the task really really easy on the newer 2v engines: 1100, 1000, 796, 696.
what tensions the belt? Is the Hex that is the lock down the tension-er? I have the covers off but I am unsure on how I will get the belt tight. I have a 2002 Monster 750. Thank you, jusride7.
+jusride7 is there a better video that I am missing?
I changed my belts for Ducati 750 sport (2002) last summer and damn it was easy!
I have done exactly as he says, but now my engine stalls when it's on idle.
First I thought that I did something wrong, and therefore I removed the belts and installed them again, but i experiencing the same problem with the idle. Does any one have a guess what could be wrong?
I have a Monster 750 -99
thanks. looks straight forward enough for me.
What size was the feeler gage ? Was it .5mm?
Thank you for the video. Question though. I have a monster 695 (just for FYI) but I accidentally removed the belts without marking them, so as long as I line up all 3 of these marks, I can slide the belts back on and run with no issues correct?
Yes.
hello! can you tell me what is the correct torque?
What do you mean by "bed in"? Thanks.
Hey do you have a video on the timing belt change on a Ducati 1098, if you do can you please post the link, I couldn't find it. You do have great videos thank you. I own a 1098 so if you could please post more videos on 1098, thank you.

New to the Ducati world. I recently got a 02' Monster 900 I.e. Does the video apply to my bike as well? Thanks in advance!
+ElevatedRider Yes quite similar.

Jason,
You will need to tighten them again. Do periodic checks on your belt tension to make sure something else isn't causing this.
thanks for the reply long time motorcycle mechanic, first experience with ducati. it is a bit different than i am accustomed to.... a few things that i'm not familiar with but, i am learning your videos have been very helpful for me i'll be sure to order my belts from you when i they are due to be replaced. do you also stock valve shims? according to your video i could be looking at some adjustments there in the near future as well.

would this work on a 749 as well?
No worries, as long as the marks line up.
Awesome Vid! Very helpful & informative.
@64mafiaRu Please consult your service manual for that information.
Anyone why piston needs to be at TDC to set belt tension ?
So this ducati has a belt and chain? What about the 750?
Belt instead of chain. Yes, 750 also. Ducati V4s and Panigale do not have belts.
@amdnovello: they make great sounds and are fun to ride. Same reason as to buy any other bike... ride one, if you like it, then great.
@RicardoSS85 "bed in" = work harden = break in = get done changing
Well thank you for your response! !!
This is a great video!!
Thank you!!
This video is also valid for ducati 900 ss 2001 ?
Yes!
I used this guide for my early 900ss injection three years ago. I changed my belts again yesterday and the old belts still looked excellent, so this method of tensioning belts works well.
thanks :)
Surely a spring balance or similar would be a much more accurate means of setting the actual tension.
Surely that is far more accurate than thousands of people consider an acceptable practice. Yes.
you are... a very great help thanks!
Will this method work for a Monster 696? Anyone know? I'm thinkig it would,
Alex Kirby Yep!
***** Thanks!
I hate to sound stu-pid, but can all this be done without removing the engine from the frame?
+VEHICROS yes! Easier to film on the workbench -- no one takes the heads off just for valve adjustment.
Suck, squeeze, bang, snap... Many thanks for the video, I'll try the 5&6mm key idea with my mates ST2...
nice video!!
@RicardoSS85 : You're asking a Ducati lunatic this question? No, this motor just happened to be apart from the bike when Chris made the video.
than you.
Thanks!

No.
That'll be £400 please
Hey will you marry me it's legal now and I live right up the 405.
