I’ve got a 9000 Powerhorse generator that will not crank. I think the timing gears have jumped a tooth or two.
Great video. Thanks. I have had piston rings stick so that they are not pressing against the cylinder wall and once I got the unit to run, they freed themselves. I would put a little oil into the cylinder to temporarily improve compression and see if it'll start. Worth a shot maybe. Thanks for sharing

Great diagnosis of a problem created by improper small engine storage. Recently watched some of your original videos and just wanted to say you have come a long way in both editing and speaking on your tutorial videos. I have viewed many of the other small engine repair videos on RUclips and must say yours is over the top and i would expect your channel to see significant growth in the future. Just bought a brand new one of these. It’s an incredible engine when it’s running, getting it started is the issue. It’s just doesn’t like starting at all. Hope I didn’t waste my money!
I have one on my bandsaw mill and starts perfect with choke no matter cold or hot needs choke on and fast turn it off when she catches.
Yes, put in a couple of squirts of oil into the combustion chamber. it will rise the compression so you can start it. run it and the rings will loosen up. I often do this for new assemblies, as it raises the compression to the highest it can be and is much easier to start.

I always add a couple of teaspoons of 2 stroke engine oil to the gas, for my small 4 stroke engines for piston ring and upper cylinder wall and valve stem protection, it keeps everything well protected year round.
Good video but I disagree with the Honda clone engines being garbage. I mean yes they are not Honda quality but for 1/2 or even 1/3 of the price they get the job done. I have seen plenty of them last just as long as some B&S and Kohlor engines.
I have a couple of A-ipower (Chongquing Am Pride) Honda clone engines, and they seem to be of decent quality. I also have a couple of Chinese gasoline engine gensets and they run relatively well as well as a Cub snow blower with a beefy 420cc engine brand new this year and they all are made similarly to Honda engines. If I was going to use them commercially I would invest in Honda GX as the engines are warrantied for three years, commercial or consumer. Actually, I have three Honda GXV engines on a couple of lawn mowers and one small snow blower. The Honda engines are 25-35 years old while the rest are within the 10 year mark. I agree with you that the clones aren't necessarily garbage, in fact I would think that they could outlast some of the Briggs engines on the market today, even the American made Vanguard engines.

Guy uses a $400 powerwasher once and it's broke. I do not understand why they even sell it to you as a powerwasher. It is a soon to be paperweight.
so i picked up a garden tractor that had that motor retrofitted... it ran started running rough and backfiring but now it turns over but won't start at all... every once in a while it will backfire... through the exhaust as well as the carb... weirdness. any thoughts before I trash this thing?
Lease engines are going to let a lot of people down , before they realize they should avoid them .

I have a very similar engine on a skid steer. Recently it died on me, is now hard to start, shakes violently for a few seconds, then dies again. Any ideas what could cause this?

Where did you put the carb cleaner? Directly into the spark plug hole?
And through the carb, wouldn't start due to low compression.
@@EliminatorPerformance very useful video - helped get mine running after 2 years. However it is leaking gas out of the float bowl because the gasket is split. Figured I might as well replace the whole bowl. Any idea what bowl I'm looking for?

I am building a go cart with this engine, 420cc powerfist. Does anyone know what torque converter would work?
Tell your customer to take it back to Princess Auto they have a very good return policy, and get a replaced engine.
lol I'm guessing you're paid by the hour? I know you're trying to "cover all the bases" but I could have told you right off the bat that the problem was likely the rings based on what the customer said. From there, check spark, check carb with spray. If still no fire, shove a camera down the spark plug hole. Could have had it all done in like fifteen minutes or less. That being said, you did cover all your bases and your conclusion is the same as mine would have been and your suggestion to the customer is the same. If it was a name brand engine, sure. Since it's not, might be better off replacing it to save a lot of hassle in the future. If the customer gave zero information, your process to check would have been spot on. When you know nothing about why the engine is as it is, you have to cover everything to reach a conclusion. When the engine is "new" and the customer tells you, like in this example, that the engine has sat for years and was seized, and he brute forced it to be free, yeah, it's probably going to be a ring problem. Of course, it could be a valve problem, but the better chance is rings.
Yes I am paid by the hour, to repair. Not to diagnose. Diagnostic is $35 and that fee is waived if I end up doing the repair. I quoted the customer and he said he didn't want to put money into it. Like you said, after the customer told me he "broke it loose with a Johnny bar" I Basically knew the rings were probably cracked, and it wasn't making compresion because of that. this was just filmed for the sake a video.

I sold this engine to a friend, he tore it down and the piston rings were cracked due to them rusting to the cylinder and the guy freed it up with a breaker bar. He bored and honed the cylinder, oversized the piston and rings and he said it's the most powerful pressure washer he's ever used
