You cycled past my house on one of the old farm roads that turned into a walking and cycling path. I take the same route from there to the university at the far east end of the city. The ride is so nice!
How awesome would it be if this was your commute to work everyday instead of the car infested streets and highways we have here in the US. The sun on your face, the wind in your hair and the happy sounds of children playing in the neighborhoods and parks instead of being stuck in one traffic jam after another.
@@lws7394 Yep! Having access to a safe and inviting active mobility network makes those "shorter" commutes and other trips much more attractive and enjoyable for all ages and abilities.
@@lws7394 The US has space but spills it. Our houses are a bit smaller and row houses are energy efficient compared to free standing houses. Also, in the US you won't find stores in the suburbs, wich we do in The Netherlands. To do groceries you need to drive a car in the US because it's located in a shopping district.
It's awesome in the summer! Of course there's also autumn, with headwind (it's always headwind, regardless of where you are going), supercooled rain, roads that are not slippery until they are, and... ok, that's as bad as it gets, and there's no bad weather, just bad clothing, and this channel has a thing about how using a car like a metal coat is silly. And many workplaces have showers for cyclists with a long commute. But still, there is also a reality behind this picture perfect video ;-)
That's quite a commute from Vleuten to the city center of Utrecht. I remember, from my younger days, kids from Houten riding their bikes to and from school in Utrecht every day -- and that was in grade school.
Yeah, I've done that ride several times, and it always lifts my spirits to see the kids riding between Houten and Utrecht. Thank you so much for watching and for this contribution to the conversation. Cheers! John
11:34 John loves the lines of trees. That lane stretches 4 km/ 2.5 miles and under the lanes are big diameter water mains. Delivering water to the Zandvoort's Dunes. Where the water is filtered by the sand and then is pumped to Amsterdam, for water tap supply.
Yes, Josine has wanted to show it to me since my visit in 2022. I am so glad we were able to fit it into our schedules this year. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Cheers! John
I came specially to thin park, because of the garden of Piet Oudolf, Vlinderhof. Little paradise. And somewhere there was a flat boathing, vlot in Dutch, dont know the english word. By pulling a chain you came over the water. Children would love that.
So many children out and about in the video!!! You would never see that many kids on the street in my neighborhood outside of Halloween trick or treat, and then, of course, that only happens with adult "supervision".
I've seen people do videos about this bridge and talk about it, but they never talk about who Daphne Schipper is and why the bridge was named after her.. I've been watching her for years and I wonder what she thinks about that.
You see... that is where "we" come in, the comment section. Here we can give additional information, something I do regular on videos about Utrecht. In my case it is often about the historical aspects of Utrecht like the history of the Domchruch and tower, the significance of Utrecht for the formation of the Netherlands and such and you could have told about Daphne. Often if it is interesting information, the uploader might pin such comments for others to read. I am not a sports guy, my knowledge of Daphne is going as far as that she was born in Oog in Al and has (or had, I am not sure.. again.. not a sports guy) world records, olympic championships and is one of Utrechts sports heroes. (together with Anton Geesink, Jochem Uytedhaage, Marco van Basten, to name a few). You can't blame Active towns for not researching this, it is not what their video is about. Thank you for once again shining a light on my beloved Utrecht. Always good to see you here.

The Netherlands is quite famous for the independence of the children. A lot has been written about it.
In the '70s children were a lot more independent in North-America. Somewhere along the line this changed for the worse sadly.
