    Another key point of the episode, to me, is that you can't really know someone based on how they seem online. At the beginning, the real Ash posts a childhood picture of himself online because he thinks the internet will find it funny. But he tells his wife the real story, that it was a miserable family trip after his brother died. Later, the robot Ash picks up the same photo and calls it "funny" because his responses are based on what Ash said publicly, but not what he really thought.
    (Also, robot Ash being stored in the attic is a parallel to what was said in that conversation, as others pointed out.)

    • @roomijsjeeee
      @roomijsjeeee 4 года назад +7

      well she also uploaded a lot of private videos but the point is. The robot Ash doesn’t grow with you, it doesn’t have a past and she can’t learn new stuff about him. Since he’s just a surface of the limited information it has. she also stated to the robot “Ur not enough of him” since he’s just a snapshot of him.

  • @SonOfEire3
    @SonOfEire3 5 лет назад +108

    The parallels in this story are GENIUS. In the beginning Ash is addicted to social media and doesn't really pay attention to the real world, then she begins to use the Ash simulation the same way he did. Also Ash mentioning all the painful pictures of lost loved ones got moved to the attic and then that's what she does with the Ash copy...

    I just wanted to say your channel means a lot to me. I don't really have any friends or close family in my life, and I have a really hard time interacting with people due to severe depression and social anxiety. kurtrussell , I see you are a Tool fan and you love music(me too). I’ve made amazing friends at concerts and festivals. Not best friends or people you necessarily keep in touch with, but people you have a moment with. And sometimes thats enough. I was an only child so being alone was all I knew. That made me feel different and odd. Always an outsider. I made my first real best friend at 35. Everyone travels through life at a different pace. You have yours. It doesn’t have to be like anyone else’s. If you have peace with yourself, you are never alone.

      Normals shit anyway man, don't crave being normal, the majority of people who are just drones following what society tells them, rushing home from a 9 to 5 office job to watch Kardashian take selfies is literally all that wrong with society.
      Go against the grain n fuck being normal.
      Also I read someone mention your into TOOL? Anyone who has TOOL in their repertoire obviously has the right idea and must be doing something right....

    This episode broke me, dude. Just...ugh. I have an anxiety disorder so whenever somebody I care about is late getting home or getting somewhere, my mind almost always convinces me they're hurt or dead. So this entire scenario is just...a lot. Plus, the acting is fucking fantastic which made it all that much more difficult to watch. That being said, this is still one of my favorite episodes. Top 5, for sure.

    My husband and I were together for 40 years when he passed a few years ago. You loose a very large part of yourself with him. I know I could not bear to have a replica of him walking around the house. It would be a constant reminder of what I lost. I think memories are more healing than a replacement .

    This episode really speaks to how we grieve as human beings. It also deals with our digital lives and our imprint of "highlights" that lives on well after we do die. I've had people die...and now their Facebook pages are immortalized and we can return to them to remember them if we like. Ultimately, it's not healthy, because you can never fully move on from it.

    • @victorsixtythree
      @victorsixtythree 5 лет назад +4

      I like that - she put him up in the attic with all the other old photos. So, he's kind of like a living photo that she kept around, at least in part to show her daughter what her dad was like, I guess. I also noticed at the very end it looks like Martha is looking at the door jamb where they kept track of Ash's height as he was growing up - in contrast to "Ash" now, who doesn't grow or change anymore?

    Artificial Ash is a representation of our happy memories with someone who we truly love. And when that person is gone, those memories become very painful but we still hold on to them even if we don’t want to - because the pain reminds us that what we’ve had with that person was real.

    Such a good episode and it really is scary because this would appeal to many people who have lost someone so suddenly. I agree with Nikki, if we haven't seen something with our own eyes sometimes its hard to believe. This would be ok to get closure and say the things you haven't been able to say but it would and could never be a replacement for the love one you have lost. It really make you think and we can all put ourself in her shoes. Man this shows amazing!

  • @brom00
    @brom00 5 лет назад +19

    It seems that we're not too far off from something like this. People have bots online that reply as they would, it's not that far of a stretch to do it with a deceased person's online footprint. We already connect with each other, more often than not, without having physical connection.

    • @eastcoastj
      @eastcoastj 5 лет назад +6

      Also keep in mind that people in the future will have lived the entire length of their lives on social media and the internet, not just the last few years like us. The amalgamation of online interactions left from future people might make for a much more honest picture of a person if someone was ever to be recreated. Creepy.

      This is one of the things this show does well IMO, brings to light things we should be thinking about now before the technology gets even more ahead of our laws/ethics. What happens if one person (say a brother) wants to do something like this but another (say a second brother) does not want it to exist. Who decides? I think people should be putting rights to their "digital afterlife" in their wills (and I am sure some are). Real life sort of example is from Steven's (and mine) beloved Star Wars where Governor Tarkin is "acted" by Peter Cushing after his Death which is not exactly the same as this but is IMO in the same arena.

    Another brilliant reaction. You two, your lives and experiences as a couple, bring so much to your reactions to this particular show. "Don't go to bed angry". I've always tried to live that way and I've taught my kids (who aren't kids anymore😊😊) that as a person who what's to have a life partner you need this rule in your relationship arsenal. Also, for the individual. If you're not with someone the rule still applies so basically it's sound advice all around.

I think the overall message is about humanity and how humanity abuses and manipulates the powers that technology grants us, not the other way around.

One minute I was close to tears and the next I was terrified the remade ash would harm Martha, then I was terrified she would jump and kill herself. This is one of my favorite episodes. By the way, the actress Hayley Atwell played as Marvel's Agent (Peggy) Carter. What I like about the episode is that it shows you to what extent technology can evolve into in order to compensate for human frailty. Just think. There are human sex dolls that costs thousands of dollars that you can customize for every conceivable thing (satisfaction). This is really about how human emotions, feelings, events (like pregnancy) can cause a person to take things one step further. It is a boundary that is crossed when life and death are literally at a person's doorstep or threshold. This is difficult to just react to. Your thought process and the ability to put yourself in the other person's shoes has to be involved.

    Having "SOMETHING" like that and that's a key word here would take everything from what was real about that actual person, eventually it would kill that person in your mind and that's the worst thing ever. We live and we die and that's a reality, not some substitute.

  • @Artiri
    @Artiri 5 лет назад +4

    Most of the time, the death of a person is unexpected, people have a desire to spend a little more time with the deceased person and this program gives them a little bit of that. This futuristic multimedia helps people cope with the situation, accept reality and then move on and in the end that's what happen to her.
    You have to look "him" as a combination and sophisticated content format. It's like watching a picture of a deceased person or video, in the past people didn't even have that, in the future it's very likely we will have this. This technology looks creepy to us, but I imagine our current technology would look creepy to people from the past.

I related to this episode because I could see myself falling down the rabbit hole of trying to cling on to whatever piece of a person I can get and it gradually escalating exactly how it did in this episode. It really hit home because most people ThINK or do know themselves enough to know they would be strong enough to move on but curiosity would get the best of me and I’d be addicted just like her. This is one of those instances where it sounds good on paper but in practice it isn't. When you are in an emotional state you aren't thinking about moving on. You want to be with the person that you love right then and there and you are willing to do anything to achieve that. But in time, you realize that moving on is an important part of the grieving process that we all have to go through as human beings. Anyway, I enjoyed this review from you guys because it gave us a little tidbit into you guys' relationship. It was sweet to watch it.

    1:18 Rule 36: "If you feel like you are being played, you probably are". - L. J. Gibbs
    Regarding the episode, I think this is one of the most creepy AND beautiful. I think the true "Black Mirror-y" part of this is the doll thing, but the chat application itself is something that I would both be afraid of and want to use in a situation like this, I believe. Of course, that only is if I knew of the existence of the app beforehand. IF this app existed and it was well known by people and rigidly controlled (like you can only chat 1h per week), I think it would be used: the user knows it isn't the real person, but it could still help or relieve some nostalgia once in a while.

    I think at a low moment, recently after the loss, it would be very tempting to talk to the person. The whole, “let’s bring ‘em back” scenario...maybe not so much.

    I'm starting to watch your 'Black Mirror' reactions from here, long story short; I've yet to watch the first season of 'Black Mirror'.
    I'm so happy that you're reacting to this show, finally. Afer 'Westworld' it appeared to be the perfect fit to fill this time slot, which is why i voted for it. A devastating episode in many ways and a brilliant example of what Black Mirror does best, it makes you think.
    I love both actors in this particular episode, so that was a joy for me too.
    Thanks for the fantastic reaction, I really enjoy watching you guys react to these types of shows in particular. =)
    Keep up the great work and I hope it didn't make you too sad, Nikki?

    Hi guys, I love your channel. I think that the further you get with this show, the more you are going to find that you have lots to say after reflecting for a week. There is some stuff that sinks in pretty deep. Cheers!

    finally getting around to black mirror and see that my favorite reacting couple also watched it three years back. so i like to watch your reaction after the show. you guys never watched battlestar galactica but the spinoff show, caprica, uses this same idea: take the sum total of a person's electronic records and online postings to come up with an AI that looks, talks, and thinks just like they would.

    What makes BM so good is that it's almost real. It's like an exact replica of our reality but just slightly ahead. Normally when you see movies that are set in the future they show flying cars or jet packs maybe space craft visiting the new human colony on Mars.
    BM ignores that stuff. It explores things that are real and could be very well real in a few years.

    Morale of the story:
    People's online presence isn't a realistic approximation of who they really are...Great acting & intense drama, but a good episode, if not difficult to watch.
    See y'all on Tuesday! 😁💜

    By the way...(and this is not a spoiler for any episodes I promise)...but the song the girl song in episode 2 on Hot Shots...(the girl who turned into a poem girl).. That song turns up in a lot of the episodes throughout the series in different seasons...also some of the characters turn up in different episodes as different characters...as you go through the episodes see what you can spot from other episodes....

    This episode killed me. I could easily see myself doing what she did and trying to find some way of holding on to the parts of my partner that I could. But in the end, that would just leave me stuck and alone. She wouldn't be back but she wouldn't be gone, either.

    commenting before watching... very much looking forward to this, as per usual.
    i love that i love the disquiet Black Mirror makes us feel. makes us consider so many things we'd never even countenance in real life, yet so many *are* real life situations (amended by Brooker's mind to the scenario)
    i also love that i *hate* that it can make us feel that, *frequently* - Charlie Brooker is a bit of a genius imo.
    tv is *supposed* to make you *feel* or at least the good stuff is.
    this *is* the good stuff. 👍

    If you guys haven’t seen “Ex Machina” yet, I highly recommend it. It also stars Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux) along with fellow Star Wars star Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron). Very “Black Mirror”-ish and deals largely with AI while also exploring many other sci-fi/philosophical ideas and themes. Beautiful, brilliant, and terrifying.
    I think it’s on Netflix.
    If you end up liking it, also check out “Annihilation”, starring Natalie Portman. It’s by the same writer/director.

    The theme of the episode was, in the context of technology outpacing human behavior/emotions and us struggling with the consequences, about how something like that tech can FEEL like a cure for something as profound as grief. She did not make the call to 'bring him back' , even bit by bit, in her best state of mind. She was deep in extreme grief when she started talking to it, AFTER she just learned that she was pregnant. It's a hard thing to even comprehend, learning that you are about have a child, now alone, when your partner died so recently. Your mind will allow you to go to places like that, in that state. It's about addiction to the things technology can offer, in our most vulnerable states. And as the addiction, and our innate problem with facing reality or sadness as people come together, that scenario becomes possible. The real, actual now version of this hypothetical would be say... how someone suffering from extreme social anxiety or self esteem issues develops an unhealthy dependency on social media validation. You see that all the time, the lengths people will go to feel liked/loved/admired online. With something like grief... that can be a whole other thing.
