One of the roots of the Greek word apostasia in 2 Thes. 2:3 is aphistemi. It can mean to disappear withdraw, depart, or remove, in addition to falling away. Before the King James was published, departure was the accepted translation for apostasia. Another related word is apostasion. It’s the masculine form of apostasia, and is the Greek word for divorce. Since all three of these words convey the idea of a change of mind, it appears that falling away is the more appropriate translation. Also Understanding of 2 Thes. 2:3, you don’t need it to show that Paul taught the Thessalonians a pre-trib rapture. Paul said that before the Day of the Lord can come, there has to be a falling away(disappearance)and then the anti-Christ has to be revealed. Then in verse 7 he said that before the anti- Christ can be revealed the restrainer has to be taken out of the way (literally taken from among). This restrainer is widely accepted to be the Holy Spirit resident in the Church. If so Paul was telling them that the church will have to be gone before the anti-Christ can be revealed??
2 Thessalonians 2:3 - ...let no man beguile you in any wise: for it will not be, except the FALLING AWAY come first, and the man of lawlessness be revealed, the son of perdition... Paul assures the Thessalonians that they have not missed His coming, but rather that TWO things MUST take place BEFORE "the day of the Lord" (His coming) takes place... 1.) "the falling away"... and 2.) the man of lawlessness be revealed. When we consider the Greek word = “apostasia”, this word can refer to: APOSTASY = defection from religion... -OR- REBELLION = defection from authority. What does Paul say to provide context? Paul tells us about a "lawless" man that will be in complete rebellion to all law and authority of Jehovah God & things related - and this seemingly, taking place from outside of the Lord's church! It seems to me that in this verse Paul speaks of "rebellion" from ALL religious authority - not necessarily that there will be a major "apostasy" of disciples out of His church. (The idea of apostasy is brought up by Paul in other references - ex: 1Tim 4:1-5, 2Tim 4:3-4). (It is encouraging to see this video delving into the Greek language for a better and clearer meaning of the words Paul uses here!!. Let's use all the "tools" God has provided to better understand His Word!!)
The day of a Christ and the Day of the Lord are the same thing in the sense that context determines the meaning not the title. So the day of Christ and day of the Lord are the second coming and the rapture. If I remember correctly
Pastor David Reid ! If there are members of the Body of Christ do fall away i.e. commit apostasy, as mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 2:3, written by the Apostle Paul, will that mean they still won't loose their salvation, in reference to 2 Timothy 2 :13 respectively ? For your information, my name is Leon here, with warm greetings from MALAYSIA, located in Southeast Asia.
@LeonLKC During the dispensation of grace, a believer who has believed the gospel does not lose their faith by departing or abandoning the faith (2Tim 2:13). Obviously, there would be consequences in their earthly life and at the judgment seat of Christ, but there would not be loss of salvation. Hope this helps. Grace.
If paul isn't writing romans 11 to the body of christ or saved people, why would he write to unsaved gentiles who won't care to read something they don't know about or are not interested in because they are not saved? How can gentiles continue in his goodness if they have not received salvation and become part of the body of Christ? Paul is definitely talking to saved gentiles.
Hi David, If the Gentiles today refuse to stand in faith surely they are in the Body already. Can you please clarify this for me? In addition, Romans 11:22 if the Gentiles are grafted in then they can lose their salvation as this verse works for Armenians, covenantalists, Pentecostals and others who failed to Rightly Divide the word of Truth. The Lord Jesus according to the gospel of the grace of God bore the severity of God in my place. 2 Cor 5:21. God is no longer imputing trespasses upon us so I am battling with the Gentiles who refuse to stand in faith regarding the apostasy. Please clarify the end section when you mention either the apostasy is the Body or those Gentiles who don't stand in faith. Thank you. I do believe it is the Body of Christ as I have already begun to see many in the Body go over to the teachings of "Salvation for All". No need to mention names.
@vanessaG275 In Romans 11, the subject is Gentiles not the body of Christ (11:13). No one during the dispensation of grace loses their salvation. What does happen at the end of the DOG is that the direct Gentile access to God that exists during the DOG is cut off. It is cut off because Gentiles as a whole (not the body of Christ) refuses to stand by faith (11:20, 11:22). Hope this helps. Grace.
@char23c In John 17:12, the son of perdition refers to Judas. In 2Thess 2:3, the son of perdition refers to the Beast. So, the son of perdition refers to different people in the two verses although they have obvious similarities. Hope this helps.
You exegesis of Romans 11 doesn't make sense. Why would unsaved gentiles care about reading what Paul says if they weren't saved to begin with? They were spiritually blinded to understand what Paul wrote. How can unsaved gentiles continue in his goodness when they are not even saved? This chapter is clearly talking to saved gentiles.
...except that falling away "from the faith" is nowhere in the context of what is being said. A Departure is in perfect context with "our gathering together unto Him," and it happens before the man of sin is revealed. Someone is taken out of the way before the wicked is revealed, is also perfect context with "our gathering together unto Him." The reason it must stay with context of what is being said right there, right then, is because of verse 6, "AND NOW YOU KNOW..." How do they NOW KNOW? He just told them. It can't be from something he wrote in another letter to someone else. In 2nd Thessalonians 2:1-2, Paul is referring to two different "comings" of the Lord." One is our gathering together unto Him, and the other is the Day of the Lord (when He returns to earth). Paul is beseeching them by one of those comings that they be not shaken about the other coming. One of those comings, he is looking forward to (1 Thessalonians 1:10, Philippians 3:20, 4:5). The other coming he is not looking forward to (that day shall not come...) Just how I see it.
@ColumbusBibleChurch it also means Departure. ...and a literal leaving of a place. KJB was the first ever English translation to use "falling away." Most (not all) prior English translations used Departure. I don't really trust the Greek. What are they on, the 25th? 26th revision? Those so called Greek Scholars can't even agree amongst themselves. Wasn't it the Greeks who thought the preaching of the cross was foolishness? Wasn't it the Greeks who were constantly looking for some new teaching? However, the Greek also shows its a specific falling away: THE falling away or Departure that they now know.
The "falling away" is not a departure from faith. This is about the Jewish remnant that will flee into the wilderness at the time of the abomination of desolation. The departure of the Jewish remnant happens right at the time the man of sin is revealed. This has nothing to do with a rapture or people falling away from faith.
It’s taken this pre-Trib Rapture adherent since childhood some careful, honest study, but I am forced by the Word of God itself to challenge my long-held assumptions and lean toward agreement with you. I had long troubled my own belief with acknowledgment that the revelation of Antichrist (2 Thess 2:3-4) perfectly describes the mid-point Trib event that reveals Antichrist’s true identity--up to that point, he is not “revealed,” but masquerades as a peace-making hero to the world and a messiah to Israel. Additionally, it’s clear both by reading Acts 17 and by paying careful attention to key verses in both Thessalonian letters, that Paul’s audience is predominantly Jewish (proselytes included). It’s also clear that Paul considered the Dispensation of Grace would end in a short time and that the Jews he brought forward into the One Body, individual soul salvation, Grace Message would in no wise forfeit their Kingdom position, nationally speaking. My last remaining stronghold on a pre-Trib rapture is 1 Thess 4. But even there, there are problems--especially as it relates to the verses that immediately follow in chapter 5. That snatching away could also be describing a mid-Trib rescue (Rev 13:6,14). And clearly, he is still addressing Jewish believers (Ye are the children of light-5:5-is very much a Little Flock title.) Still though, there is evidence Paul describes a new, distinct Body of Christ event --Twice in chapter 4 he says that what he is telling them is “by the Word of the Lord,” a term, I believe, is reserved by Paul to describe revelation given directly to him by the risen Lord. In any case, If a rescue from the Wrath is in the works for Jewish Believers of that day, I do not think any member of the Body of Christ is appointed to the wrath of the Great Tribulation, so I don’t fret over how and when the Lord will take the entire Body of Christ.
I don't have an hour. It doesn't say "falling away". It says "departure". It is the departure of the church, sometimes wrongly called "rapture" a favorite buzzword of worker bees that don't divide and think they will earn a trip before tribulation.
