Never Give Up

  • Sometimes you get lucky, most times you don’t. My mantra is “the difference between failure and success can often be just one more try.” I’m faced with an unexpected challenge in this video, but I plan to not only overcome it, but I’m also taking the opportunity to make it better than it was in the first place. Some say, “project vehicles are never done”. To that I say, believe them.
No matter what challenges you face in life, keep going. Those challenges help shape you into something stronger and better in the end.
This will be the last video I post to ETCG1 in 2020. I’m also taking a break from my EricTheCarGuy channel until 2021. Have a great holiday and Happy New Year everyone!

Brother you are the reason i escaped out of the tire bay and into an apprenticeship, you were a huge part of the reason I was able to learn to hold my own on my own and become levels above the other potentials. I went on go graduate tech school in canada with honors and get my red seal. Now I am the head technician at that same workplace, and I love my job. I am a tech today because of Etcg1 back then. That is worth more than any amount of people calling you any kind of insults. Keep it up and stay dirty.

It’s crazy how much I needed this video.
I’ve rebuilt my Z31 300zx two times this year and am still finding new issues. Deep down I want this car to run perfect because it’s my first project car but lately I’ve felt super unmotivated to work on it because of the constant failures. I’m only 22 and Eric has many years of experience on me so to hear him going through a similar situation with his dads truck really makes me feel better. Eric if you see this comment I just want to say thanks for putting out videos like this.

  • @maingun07

Totally agree. I did the same thing with the Quadrajet in my Buick. I shot maybe a half dozen rebuild kits through it and combed every boneyard in the Kansas City area. It took more than a year of tinkering and the carb is a Frankenstein's monster, but it finally works the way I want it to. Sometimes good enough is good enough, but perfection never is.

Anyone who would rake you over coals for rebuilding the engine for the third time is nothing but a recliner quarterback, all talk and no real knowledge. Your persistence is something we can all aspire to develop in getting things done right, and I applaud your effort and your strong will. Happy Holidays and all the best with the rebuild. I can’t wait to see the end result.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We all should have goals in life. If we don't set goals for ourselves we are simply stumbling through life without a purpose. Most of us live in a throw-away society. If it doesn't work, replace it. My Grandfather was pretty good with his hands, his father was a blacksmith. He made a sign that said, "Eaglin's It'll Do Rancho." Now, to see such a sign one might think that he lived in a run-down shack and that would be wrong. He kept what he had immaculate and always worked toward making things better. Nothing will 'do' unless we make it 'do'. I applaud your efforts to make Dad's Truck the best it can be. Someday, there won't be a 'Dad's Trucks' out there that isn't in a museum where people walk buy and say, "Wow, people really had to spend their time working on those things," as if maintenance was an unnecessary task.
Anyway, you just keep on keepin' on. This show isn't about what the 'average Joe or Jo-Ellen would do. I love it when things get a little bit better each day. Don't give up! That's a great logo.

Engine building is tough. It's even harder when you're building for high power.
Very interesting seeing you go through this and highlight the importance of knowing where you want to go with an engine build and how engines built for na vs turbo are different.

Why isn't there a breather hose going up to the air cleaner, coupled
with a PCV valve and maybe a catch can? Old School air cleaners always
had a valve cover breather hose, with that rectangular filter pad.
I remember the days of periodically pouring some gas in the wire mesh
breather cap, and burning out the gunk between mesh changes.
Maybe try a dry sump pan? A remote oil tank means more oil,
longer change interval, cleaner oil, cooler oil. 5 gallon diamond plate
tank in the bed would look sweet.

Have a built small block dodge magnum engine waiting in my garage to swap into my ram come February when I have time, it’s a 4.030 bore and the initial plan was to turbo it. Well one little bit important detail was missed in the build process and now it’s a full point higher in compression at 11:1. My daily coyote f150 is a blast to drive with Boltons so I decided for safety sake, cost and ease I’m holding off on the turbo. Part of planning for it was putting 22 thousand ring gap in it.... so I’m very interested in how this turns out lol

Im having a similar experience with my clutch. Installed a new twin plate in my falcon a few months back, drove great for about 5 or 6 weeks then started having issues not disengaging. Found it had air getting into the system but strangely no fluid leak. Replaced both the master and slave (csc) cylinders and I STILL have air getting in. Got to re-bleed every 2 days. The only thing i have yet to replace is the lines.
If this don't work I might have to hand my man card in and go auto :(

I hit a snag on my timing belt job on my Honda Suv...I didn't pay attention to your video, but I inserted the woodruff key upside down when putting the pulley back on....now it's stuck and I can't risk it snapping off down the road.... locking pliers haven't worked. It's been two days, going on a third tomorrow....any suggestions? Thanks. Thanks ETCG for all the helpful info. I wouldn't have mustered the courage to do this and this small but critical mistake won't deter me from working on my own stuff. Happy Holidays and take some time off.
I know I've had to step away when I hit a roadblock and regroup... eating tamales and Mexican hot Cocoa... it's cold to keep working outside. No garage...
Just to clarify, this job in total would have taken me 1 day. But not much daylight as it gets past 4pm and I don't have a garage, it's a roofed driveway, but it gets cold at 30° F and I don't like working with poor lighting outdoors....I never have worked on a timing belt, so I was inexperienced in how that key goes back. Not too many videos mention it. But I still feel it's my fault for not double checking...

  • @jobeppe
    @jobeppe 3 года назад

So, there is too much blow-by because you gapped those piston rings wider to "accomodate" for Nos or a supercharger. Technically it is not a failure, it was a choice for future plans. Now you decided to leave it NA so the gap is incorrect for the application. Can solve it with an additional crankcase breather or new and regapped piston rings. I would choose your same choice, I'm a perfectionist too 😂✌️ Have some nice holidays Eric!

SA Design publishing has a book written by David Vizard (spelling??) Called how to port and polish cylinder heads.
It's a good read. He teaches you how to build a rudimentary flow bench for about a thousand bucks.
Also, I recommend AFR, Trick Flow, and Brodix heads.
Every time somebody says they're going to try their hand at porting and polishing heads, well, they uhm...well, they end up buying new heads.
Depending on your cam, you might be able to run 202s. Although as I say that, I realize you're most likely running 194s and doing just fine right now so...
Look up Pat Topolinski on here. His most recent video, he says Precision Is A Decision.
Dude used to work on NHRA crews, taught at SAM Tech, and now builds engines on television. He knows his shit inside and out.

The pursuit of perfection is more often than not the pursuit of knowledge and experience. And that is always a good thing, regardless if you have to do something once, twice or a hundred times. The concept of good enough is the descent into mediocrity and never leads to anywhere good. I would be disappointed in you if you didn't rebuild this engine because it would mean you are no longer moving forward towards being better.

I have the same problem right now with my F100 351w. I gapped it for nitrous and Now the rear main is leaking oil.

Eric if you want to rebuild the engine its your truck your choice. Would a crankcase breather help?

Sorry I didn't watch the build but wouldn't and oil catch catch prevent the issue? Not sure if you have one already installed.

No one expects you to know everything eric.
Look at how many experts it takes to design/manufacturer cars in a car company.
And they still make mistakes!, ( Recalls for all sorts of unforseen and fatal faults. )
You are still tinkering to get the truck debugged, there will be the odd small problem.
Happy tinkering over the xmas period :-D
