  • John Corvino explains the fallacy of false dilemma, in which an argument forces a conclusion while leaving key options off the table.
    Dr. John Corvino is a speaker, writer, philosophy professor, and Dean of the Irvin D. Reid Honors College at Wayne State University in Detroit. Read more at JohnCorvino.com.
    John Corvino's Better Argument series was filmed at Wayne State University by James Wright and Mayabeth Jagosz, with funding from the American Philosophical Association.

    Thank you for this short series. I've sometimes considered myself as a bit of a philosopher without understanding how philosophy might be taught in a course which I have never had. While I realize this series is pointing out what I assume is some of the structure of good philosophical arguments, it gives me a touch of insight of what is involved. Thank you again, and for your "What's morally wrong with homosexuality" lecture. Your arguments in that lecture have helped me to turn quite a few religious relatives into more accepting people.

    I just got blocked from commenting on a discussion by a woman who was a "pro-life" Catholic. Simply put, she created the false dilemma by stating that all Democrats were abortionists and "baby killers" which is absurd. I merely challenged her to provide factual information while I produced stuff from actual Catholic pro-life material to refute her assertions. It's wonderful when they try to shut you up simply for trying to draw out the truth....

    Would either of the following examples of two certain Disney all-animal movies (okay, so one debuted on the big screen, and one on the small one)?
    A. Zootopia (Zootropolis in most of Europe) (the big-screen one): Mr. and Mrs. Hopps try to persuade their then-9-year-old daughter Judy to give up on her dream of becoming a police officer, as had they given up their (unspecified) dreams and settled hard, and because "There's never been a bunny cop." "No!" "Bunnies don't do that!"
    B. The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar (the small-screen one, and the pilot movie to a TV series): Simba disapproves of Kion choosing his friends as his titular knights because "the Lion Guard has *always* been made of lions," and none of said friends are lions themselves.

    • @rahbaraldin.8461
      @rahbaraldin.8461 3 года назад

      @Nishant Verma Have you read the Quran or those scriptures that are considered highest in your present religion? Do you have clear understanding of Islam?

    • @rahbaraldin.8461
      @rahbaraldin.8461 3 года назад

      @Nishant Verma I assumed that you are a Hindu from your name. But you wrote that you were born Catholic. I don't know what your belief is. However, if you read the Quran with open mind and justice , you will find the truth. You complained that it doesn't change anything about one's sexuality. What do you mean by that?. Institution of marriage is important to continue human civilization. But unlawful sexual relations are prohibited in Quran. Do you want people to not get married. It is your own logic. sexuality is a natural trait of human being given by Allah and it is controlled through marriage. The Quran tells the believers to guard their private parts from illegal relations like fornication, adultery, homosexuality, incest etc. In order to keep the society clean and continue human race, marriage is really important. You cannot deny that. If you think that people cannot marry then it is impractical.
      And you think it is a religion of brutality. But it is not. The Quran condemns killing innocent people. According to the Quran:
      "whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely."
      (QS. Al-Maaida 5: Verse 32)
      So you can't say it is a brutal religion. Yes there are brutal statements in the Bible. But the Quran is not like it. you may think some verses of the Quran promote violence if you read without context. Just read previous verses or next few verses. You will find that Quran doesn't talk about violence without reason. For example, many haters of islam misquote from Surah(chapter) 9 ,
      "kill them wherever you find them"(verse 6)
      They will never give you the previous verses. If you really seek truth, start from previous verses.
      Then you will know that there was a peace treaty between muslims and polytheists of mecca during the prophet and the polytheists unilaterally broke that treaty. So they are given an ultimatum to put things straight within four months time otherwise there will be declaration of war. And in that war Allah commands muslims to kill the enemy in the battlefield. Now, any army general will command his soldiers to kill the enemy. Muslims must defend themselves in the battle. But many haters of islam jumps to verse 7 . Do you know why? Because verse 6 contains something beautiful. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala said:
      "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know."
      (QS. At-Tawba 9: Verse 6)
      So assylum must be given if they want. Think about any kind army general. The best that he can say is to let the enemy go if he doesn't want to fight. But Allah commands muslims to deliver the enemy guy to a place of safety if he does not want to fight. That is the beauty of Islam. So this types of misquotations are often used by islamophobes.
      Islam has the solution for all kinds of problems in this world. In Islam, we only worship one true God(Allah). You cannot worship anything or anyone except Allah(creator, sustainer, owner of all). To accept Islam, you have to believe that Allah is the only one worthy of worship and idolatry is prohibited. You should also believe that prophet Muhammad(pbuh) is the last massenger of Allah. Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.
      Therefore, I invite you to accept Islam.
