To be clear, Cagliostro was Miyazaki's first _theatrical_ directorial debut. He had done directorial work in TV series prior to Cagliostro, and had actually been in the TV animation industry for maybe 15 or so years before working on the film, including directing some of the Lupin TV series. The reason Lupin's character is slightly different from his Monkey Punch incarnation is because the production's goal was to portray an older, world-wary Lupin who had matured a bit from his younger, wilder days.
To be fair, most of animated Lupin III is kinda different to the Monkey Punch incarnation. It's not only Miyazaki thing. Most of animated Lupin is more on the lighter and softer side of things (but not exclusively).
@@FlauFly And even then. There's an excuse as to why the characters have been softened up, and it's in the form of Clarisse. In Lupin's case, he may be a thief but he isn't a cradle robber. Fujiko knew that playing up her sexual side wouldn't benefit her since the Count is no fool and infiltrating the Castle as a Governess would actually take suspicion off of her in the long term, Jigen is there out of loyalty to Lupin and hears why Lupin won't go after Clarisse, and Goemon is just kinda there beside his own Loyalty to Lupin. Zenigata would have acted the exact same regardless of how the others acted.
This is one big circle. Castle of Cagliostro might inspired Indiana Jones. And Indiana Jones inspired Ducktales. And Ducktales was sometimes animated by TMS Entertainment. And TMS Entertainment did the animation of the newer Lupin the Third series.
LarsEMou99 and also, Indiana Jones inspired Spanish animator Enrique gato to make his adventurous animated films, specially and mainly the parody character Tadeo Jones
This and Porco Rosso are the last movies before I have officially watched all the movies Hayao Miyazaki has directed. Can't wait to see this though, since even if its his directorial debut, it definitely showed how talented Miyazaki was.
Great review! I love Castle of Cagliostro, its up there with Raiders for me as one of my favorite adventure films. Clamouring for the day the Animat gets to review Don Hertzfeldt's "It's Such a Beautiful Day" though. THAT is going to be an interesting review. Underrated, I wish more people had seen it.
I did came up an idea of making my own animated Robin Hood film and it is influence and inspiration of The Castle of Cagliostro. And it is so influence and inspired by other films like Shrek, Tangled and The Road to El Dorado. It will be mix of comedy and drama and both Robin Hood and Little John are likable con artists. Both are stealing gold and money from rich to give the poor people. It will be 2d hand drawn animation like Disney, DreamWorks and Studio Ghibli and to have British and American actors to fit the voices of the characters. So what do you think?
Fun fact: The name of Cagliostro comes from the original Maurice Leblanc novel "Arsene Lupin and the Countess de Cagliostro", though pretty much the only similarity in plot is that both stories involve a legendary treasure and there is a love interest named Clarisse.
And don't forget that this was adapted into a videogame console in the 80's using a laserdisc player similar to Dragon's Lair. I can still see and hear the cues from the game in my head prompting either a button mash or joystick toggle up/down/left or right. When you see him running across the rooftops of the castle, that's where I remember it the most.
Yeah! The Castle of Cagliostro! My most favorite animated movie! Thank you reviewing it! This is why I want to become a filmmaker one day. Thank you for the Seal of Approval!
This movie was my first introduction to the world of Lupin and I love it every time I watch it! Knowing that this is the launching point of Mitazaki’s career makes it better. True the characters are different than their usual portrayals it’s not unwelcome. In fact these characters have had such personalities in the cannon shows. This movie is definitely worth rewatching and I never get tired of it.
I like this movie as it’s a good example of how an act of kindness can come back around. The princess helped out Lupin long ago and he in return saved her from that horrible man.
i never heard of this movie before intil i watched the bonus features for nussuca and the valley of the wind. they talk about it for a min before talking about nussuca's production and a few months later .my library had it and i didn't know it was a lupin the lll movie (and i wondered about him) so i rented it and i loved it
This looks awesome and I need to rent it. I'm not very familiar with Lupin III and his adventures, but I love crime, heist, and detective stories, so this would be right up my alley. I also love Miyazaki's work. I think my sister, too, who loves anime and especially Miyazaki, would like this. Your review just sold me on a potential new favorite film!
Interesting fact, which may have contributed to its popularity, is that this movie was also used as a base for a video game. Back when Dragon's Lair was popular and several similar games came out, this was the video portion of a game called cliffhanger (several years before the Stallone movie). Didn't even know it was a movie until I saw the box for it at a video store and recognized the main character as being from the game.
I was pretty aware of Lupin the 3rd from Toonami. I fell in love with the anime from it. But I was never aware of this film until one day, years ago, when I was walking through the movie section of Walmart. In passing, I saw the DVD cover of this (the front cover was with Lupin holding Clarisse while on the end of a rope) and looked at it for a second until I realized that was Lupin on the cover. I knew I had to buy it and I am glad I did because it is my all-time favorite anime movie I have seen. If you want the definitive version of this movie, go out and buy the Discotek Collector's Edition Blu-Ray. It has both dub versions on it, several cast and crew interviews (including Bob Bergen and David Hayter, the two Lupins). It is everything that a collector's home video release should be.
I Don't Know, I Was Hoping That He'll Do A Animat Commentary On The Rugrats All Growed Up TV Special!! (It Could Happen If He's Reading This Comment And That Last One From Yesterday, Brendan Geier)!!
I dont usually watch or enjoy animes or mangas or animated movies in general but the castle of caliostro is one that i remember from my childhood that i really loved. Ive just rediscovered it and i cant wait to watch it many more times from now on
Miyazaki made Lupin into a lovable rogue which is a huge departure from his overall depiction as a lecherous fellow and Fujiko got a major character overhaul which turned her into a saint unlike her original depiction as a sultry vixen
Hmm, first ever animated film based on an animated series huh? Hmm I really don't know that one. Also, for this film there's actually another english dub with David Hayter, aka Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, voicing Lupin.
I remember watching this movie on vhs as a kid with no subs and it was in Japanese, i didn't know wtf they were saying but i understood it all and was entertained the whole time. Watched it many times.
Hey There, It's Yogi Bear! is next, yesss! I remember when Mat gave it a Honorable Mention in Top 10 Worst Movies Based On A Cartoon Part 2. Also Nut Job 2 is out today, hope you can go through after what The Emoji Movie did to you.
I just watched this movie on Netflix. I don't really know anything about the anime or manga, but I still greatly enjoyed this movie. The animation and character designs are beautiful and the plot is just so interesting the whole way through. Great review animat!
I know I'm not sending this request via Email or Patreon, but I have something you might what to put in the animation hat. It is: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
I have never watched this film yet and I'm hoping to watch it sooner or later to get into Lupin but what English dub are you watching? The Streamline one or the recent one?
Full Voice Actor List Bob Bergen: Lujpin 3 - JC Henning: Lady Clarisse - Michael McConnohie: Count Cagliostro - David Povall: Inspector Zenigata - Steve Bulen: Daisuke Jigen - Edie Mirman: Fujiko Mine - Jeff Winkles: Jodot - Steve Kramer: Goemon Ishikawa - Mike Reynolds: Walter the Gardener - Kirk Thornton: Gustav, The Archbishop - Jeff Winkless: The Interpol Chairman - Kerrigan Mahan: Captain Sam - Juliana Donald: The Waitress
I enjoyed this film. But the introduction into the main plot could have used some work. They stole a ton of counterfeit money. Then he decided to get rid of it for being fake, even though the money was good enough to fool the government. That part made absolutely no sense.
Licensing reason's, lupin himself is supposed to be a descendant of a character in literature. The name was used without permission but there was no copyright protection of it in japan but when it was brought outside of japan this was not the case, so he was always called rupan, wolf or boss by jigen to avoid the the copyright

Lupin part 1 was his first ever direction credit he was show runner with Isao Takahata
Castle of Cagliostro is an excellent movie! I'm really satisfied with your review Ant.
Didn't this movie inspire Steven Spielberg when he was making Indiana Jones
Andrew Kuder
It's a rumor. It could be true.
This is one big circle. Castle of Cagliostro might inspired Indiana Jones. And Indiana Jones inspired Ducktales. And Ducktales was sometimes animated by TMS Entertainment. And TMS Entertainment did the animation of the newer Lupin the Third series.

Batman: The Animated Series has also been inspired by Castle of Cagliostro
This movie gives me vibes from Indiana Jones, The Rocketeer and The Score.
This movie was actually my introduction to anything anime related back when it used to be on Netflix
Well thats a helluva introduction!
This is what got me into Lupin the third when I was little. Surprising how mature some of the Lupin stuff are compared to this.
This and Porco Rosso are the last movies before I have officially watched all the movies Hayao Miyazaki has directed.
Can't wait to see this though, since even if its his directorial debut, it definitely showed how talented Miyazaki was.
funny enough these 2 are my first foray into miyazaki's work and both are my faves
Honestly two of the best, enjoy
It's not his directorial debut into anime in general though.
He did many tv shows and even some of the tv eipsodes of lupin
@@JacaboBlanco Lupin part 1 was his first direction credit he show ran with Isao Takahata so lupin as a franchise is very important to miazakis Carrer
Six years later and I am in the same exact position. That’s actually crazy lol

RPGFan Makes sense. This Lupin is supposed to be the descendant of the original Arsene Lupin.
I really like Lupin's recent series dub, their voices fit a lot.
Is that the one with Sonny Strait as Lupin?
Bob Bergen (Porky Pig) and David Hayter (Snake) will always be the best voices of Lupin III
Love this movie! This review was a great celebration of the 50th anniversary of Lupin III!
It's Like A Mystery Movie....................Minus The Team Up With Scooby & The Gang!
No Clue Why I Said It!
Yeah, That Too!
Do You Think That In Issue Number 32 Of Scooby Doo Team Up Might Feature Yogi Bear Someday!
Also minus the random splitting u- No wait they still split up.
AniMat sounds like the English voice actor for Lupin the III in the anime on toonami right now, at least to me.
been watching Lupin the III on Toonami and I'm glad to see you review this movie
Yes, awesomeness -- someone who gives well-deserved props to the infinitely superior Streamline version!
And don't forget that this was adapted into a videogame console in the 80's using a laserdisc player similar to Dragon's Lair. He's Good At Translating The Title Of This Movie!
Good work, Mr Myazaki. Good work
Dexter The Nostalgia Toonster Except he mispronounced both "Lupin" and "Cagliostro" right off the bat.
Don't Blame Him For Mispronouncing Those Words!
maybe He's Alittle Rusty At His Spelling, FreakinSweet1987 (And Cool Username By The Way)!
I like this movie as it’s a good example of how an act of kindness can come back around. The princess helped out Lupin long ago and he in return saved her from that horrible man.

you should review another Anime film like Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland!

was that season 4???
