    This is fantastic instruction. I have practiced hard to make the correct forehand swing 'shape' , but often get a blocked feeling when playing an actual game. I realize now, that I should be letting the shoulder relax at impact - rather than try and 'muscle' it through. I haven't been able to pin-point the exact problem and solution on my own. So thank you !

    Great vid. I think it has to start with external rotation of the shoulder when relaxed. When I’m tight I stay internally rotated and end up pushing and spraying. This vid made me think of the Sampras FH. His shoulder seemed so tight and pulled up by his ear a lot and almost forced. But somehow had one of the best FH’s of all time. Best tennis channel always highly technical specific topics that little or no others post about.

    Hats off , hats off Tom!! 👏👏👏, Did you know that I´ve watched this very video of Djokovic dozens + dozens of times in the last, Idk 3,4 years? (apart that Nole is my only favorite player basically bc of his forehand ☺) plus other ones in the same side view just to try to discover and ask myself like an anatomist, What does this guy do so beautifully and fluidlywell that others don´t ?(obviously different than the others or that looks different to me at least) that happens so inadvertently that I couldn´t figure out exactly what, couldn´t name one thing only... and you came here TODAY to point it out finally ha ha.
    I wasn´t born with clinical eyes for tennis for sure.
    I'm not unaware that the overrotation on the forehand is an issue that is so common and you even see in some top100s but in the case of Djokovic's motion, Do you also opine that to not overrotate (because in tennis it´s not a question of wishing given that the forehand comes like a wave o momentum) is mandatory that the non dominant arm & hand should be kind of tucked in at pec-height to act as "brake"? like it´s told by one coach out there ("dynamic brake" he says) or perhaps first of all it has to do with having the contact point very well set because if too in front or late then this shoulder stopping would fall apart.
    What do you say?
    And I guess I've attested to it every time 🤣!!

    Since you are comparing shoulder movement between the 2, there's one difference there nobody notices or ever talks about. I'm a beginner and I've struggled with this for a long time and didn't know how to fix it. Luckily I'm an engineer and figured it out. On the forehand, people who hit it well, drop the hitting arm shoulder where both shoulders form a line that is at an angle to the ground. That lets you mechanically hit the ball. Your student keeps his shoulders parallel to the ground all the way through the stroke. Check other pros, look at your own forehand, you'll see it.

    The wrist should be in the neutral position before the forward swing (lag). Also its important to remember to fire the hip before the shoulder swing.

    • @TomAllsopp
      @TomAllsopp  Год назад +2

      The hips don’t always need to be fired to achieve this shoulder rotation. They can’t always be fired.
