QUESTIONS COMMENT THREAD: What questions do you have? Need clarification about anything at all? Reply to this comment so I can see it better! I'll make edits to this comment if I remember anything else. Say hi to Hunter everyone!!
Apologies. I have a bad habit of writing rambling comments at 3 in the morning. I'm hoping there's some sort of through line for the point I meant to make. This is less of a question and more of a rumination of studio meddling and the art that arises as a result. Also, hi Hunter! From what I've heard, Moana 2 feels very close to Agents of Shield. In the same way that the rest of the MCU just happened and AOS just had to contort their storyline to fit with each new release, with no heads up about story developments. At least AOS evolved past the need to fit in with the rest of the MCU and they took every curve ball in stride, crafting genuinely incredible and compelling tv that could stand on its own. Having such a truncated timeline to work with, especially forcing it to exist in a medium it was clearly not designed for feels like they let it simmer for five minutes, before tossing it out the front door and expecting it to fly. Like Nintendo bringing back old Mario Kart tracks, forgetting the item implementation, unique obstacles, and core elements that made them special in the first place, it feels like they were trying to hit the same highs of the original without understanding why the first one was so successful in what it set out to achieve and how they used compelling character struggles to parellel the message of the movie. I'm afraid my thumbs went a bit wild there. Apologies. Final parting thought, I love the pink hair, it looks great!
Can you please do a breakdown of the song "Legendary" from Epic: the Musical and why it gives Telemachus Disney princess vibes? I think I already have an idea about why this is (it feels like a typical Disney princess "I want" song, like Belle's Reprise and Part of Your World), but I just want to hear you talk about it. Also, I wanted to see if there was anything in the song itself that I didn't pick up on.
Not exactly a question but I gotta see you do a follow-up vid or short about the songwriter's recent comments about the movie's soundtrack. I gotta hear your thoughts on it because what they said was crazy 😭
YEAH I SAW THAT AND RETWEETED A FEW THINGS ON TWITTER CAUSE I WAS LIKE… Girls just say you’re proud of your work and are always trying to learn and grow… smile and nod, don’t say these things to interviewers, it’s a little nuts 😭😭😭
Don’t do Lin Manuel Miranda if you’re not Lin Manuel Miranda… People srsly hated on him like he had done some horrendous crime and will say stuff they’d never have the guts to say to his face while he’s just…doing his job…
If people are gonna hate him for being 'everywhere', then they better be prepared to hate Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Stephen Schwartz, Hans Zimmer.....they're composers who are also 'everywhere' and have made your favorite theme songs, film scores, showtunes.....
Based on several articles released today, Lin got the wcript for Mufasa in early 2022, but by then they already had B&B working on the tv show. If I had to guess, Disney probably would've asked him to return if they had planned it as a film from the get-go, but they kinda went the cheap route for a show.
I mean you also have raised eyebrows it originally was going to be a show and the animation was not done in house but done in Canada and they may have been extra crunched time to get the animation to be good enough for a theatrical release
He may not be everyone's cup of tea but just knowing he wrote _You're Welcome_ to work with The Rock's vocal range made me feel like he was the man for the job. He's used to doing that sort of thing cos of how distinct the voices of each of the OG singers of _Hamilton_ were
15:00 okay but tbh I disagree! Tiana's problem throughout the movie is that she cared so much about her restaurant at the expense of other important things. She allowed no room for friends and they verbally complained that all she does is work, her mom complained that she allowed no room for love in her life, and she didn't really let anyone help her. She was extremely one-track minded. This is why Mama Odie was talking about the importance of what you need versus what you want. At the end of her song when they ask if Tiana understands, but Tiana instead doubles down with "needing to work even harder to get my restaurant", everyone is visibly disappointed because she still doesn't get it. She definitely had an arc imo!
I'd suggest watching the songless video where this came from* because it's more in-depth than this was, but the problem is that this is not treated as an equal flaw to Naveen. Like even though Tiana being hardworking to the point where she ignores her friends and her personal life, this is not equal to Naveen being a lazy womanizer who wants to marry a woman just for her money. I agree with you that that SHOULD be her arc, but a way to show that flaw would have been to make Tiana also go to Facilier for help. Instead, she's super unbalanced compared to Naveen. She just needs to lighten up a little bit, whereas Naveen needs to go through an entire personal transformation of his beliefs and his values.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Oh I completely agree! her faults were definitely more subtle, but that's also because they weren't really THAT bad. Yeah Tiana had her faults, but it's a huge difference from being a lazy womanizer looking for a sugar momma. It felt like he was the one driving the story and Tiana was wrangled along for the ride.
YES!! You worded it perfectly. Tiana’s flaws are extremely realistic and require close analysis and interpretation of the viewer. She was pushing herself too hard for her dream, refusing to have new experiences and meet other people, even exhausting herself in the process. She was basically blinded by her dream, not because she wanted to, but because she loved her father so much. I would even argue that she is stubborn at times, refusing advice from people that tried to help her and saying she was pushing herself too hard. But when she discovered Naveen’s love and Ray, Louis, and Lottie’s friendship, she discovered what truly mattered, and found the balance between work and life she previously didn’t have.
Tiana's friends suck. Instead of being remotely invested in her lifelong dream, they complain openly at her, while Lottie is nothing but supportive and pays her for catering so she can accomplish her goal faster. Tiana tells her mom about marriage, "that's just going to have to wait a while", which is far from an unreasonable statement to make. The film doesn't do enough to frame Tiana as truly miserable, it's obvious that the restaurant comes first in her mind and there isn't anything wrong with being career-oriented. Lottie and Naveen (later on) do what is ACTUALLY best for Tiana by working alongside her and their company along gives her the socialization she needs, while still working towards her goals. And tbh the idea that she would give ALLL that up and BE A FROG forever just to get with Naveen who, while he cleans up a little later, doesn't even really do anything to attract her besides be a man baby and the one dance thing, to complete Tiana as a character, is pretty mysoginist. It's Ariel's "I sold my soul for a man" all over again, except it's an actually legitimate criticism this time.
I seen people having this big flaw in real life. Look up people that have even worked themselves to death and than sadly have none thing to show behind it.
The way you described the grandmother just arbitrarily appearing reminded me of how in The Lion King, Mufasa talks to Simba once after he died. But then in the Lion Guard, he's just there all the freakin time to ignore Simba and guide Kion instead. Truly peak Disney spin off treatment for a ghost.
LOL THANK YOU!!!! Ya know, no shade to any other RUclipsrs or anything but it really bothers me when it’s just a guy with a monotone voice being like “the actors were good, the singing was good, the animation was nice” (or alternatively, for Moana, that all this was bad lol). Like for Wicked I saw so many surface level takes and I’m like y’all I need you to have some GUSTO and discuss more than things I could find out for myself 😂 so part of making this channel was my desire for some unhinged-ness.
it is OK to not like the songs…but making social media reviews with having less talent than toddlers..is a bit problematic…if some without an ounce of talent in basketball would rate NBA players..everyone would call this out..these two would not even get a gig in an elementary school p,ay
@@tillm2481lol what are you talking about 😂🤣 you know how in the first 5 seconds I say I’m a professional musical theatre performer and songwriter? It means that I went to a triple threat specialized college for singing, acting, and dance. I had to audition to get in and be accepted. Bold of you to say we have no talent when you not only don’t listen but can barely type 😭😭😭
@@starsneptunexx Fair. Rapunzel is 18 (at some point in the film), and Elsa is 21 in her first film, so I don't really see it as weird from an age standpoint, but I can see why it's alarming for some.
@@TheUnmitigatedDawn For all of its flaws, Hazbin Hotel not only does its job, but it does it so well that you don't notice the flaws unless you're actively looking for it. I heard _one line_ of This Is The Thanks I Get, and I was like "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph..."
@@TheUnmitigatedDawn This definitely seems a corporate issue over a creative one; Julia was given little to go on for "Wish," and Barlow and Bear had to deal with a quicker schedule due to it's transition from a show to a film.
@@TheUnmitigatedDawn Disney used to give their songwriters a lot more freedom; makes me question how they're treating the Anderson-Lopez team as they work on "Frozen 3."
I can't even imagine the pressure of being told "hey you know that tv followup to one of our big hits recently by the guy that basically defined our last 7 or so years of music we asked you to compose for? Yeah, were actually converting it to a theatrical sequel good luck!"
1:17:30 in the brazillian dub maui said "why didnt you send them an email? this joke will make sense in 2000 years" and i was completely shocked, they used so much gen z slang like, trolling, discord slang like "maui is online!", mentioned christ the redeemer by name, it was awful, at least it wasnt only us 😭
Yeah exactly. And I can at least remember the song from Cinderella 2 where she goes “whose to say the rules must be the same forever more” and she’s changing up the Royal ball LOL
I know animators, modelers and lighters who worked on this movie. They are very proud of it. Its a shame that the script and songs didn't live up to their wonderful work done visually.
It was beautiful and i enjoyed the visuals immensely, but ibwas so disappointed in everything else. Those that worked on the visuals should get all the props. Double thumbs up. I stared at the hair and water for a good chunk of the movie because i wasn't as interested in the story itself.
Yeah I can only imagine how difficult it was to make something like this in what was originally a TV show context. Even though obviously as we said I have some issues with the visuals, if this has been a TV show it would have been next level. The Tangled series was 2d because it would have cost so much, whereas this would have been the first modern show that matched the art style of the original. It’s just too bad that they decided to release this as a movie instead of being able to grow as a TV show with 8-24 episodes 😔
all disney cares about is the animation. they definitely do not care about the writing and want scripts pumped out in like a month so they can start animating quickly. They used to care about the songs but i guess not considering theyre hiring tiktokers.
I'm surprised you thought Tiana was supposed to be a Mary Sue. They didn't say it so specifically but people around her criticized her for her one major flaw -- being so focused on achieving her dad's dream of owning a restaurant that she forgets to live her life. Naveen being a childish man who never knew hardship was able to learn how to be self-sufficient and responsible because of her. And he, being so lighthearted and playful, was able to teach her how to have fun and not take everything so seriously. She taught him how to be an adult and he taught her how to be a kid again. They were an enemies-to-lovers relationship who balanced each other out and I will not stand for this injustice.
It’s a bit clearer in the video that I referenced where this discussion happened but the issue is that Tiana’s flaw is not treated equally to Naveen’s. Tiana works too hard. Naveen is a selfish, shallow, lazy, womanizing, spoiled Prince. These two things are so far apart from each other that Tiana has this moral high ground over Naveen the entire movie, whereas if Tiana had gone to Facilier it would have reinforced the idea that they both messed up. People have criticized the writing of the movie for them being frogs the whole time but also for Tiana’s lack of agency, where she wouldn’t even be in the conflict if it wasn’t for Naveen. I know what they wanted to do but I think showing some actual consequences for Tiana would have made it clearer that her overworking is just as harmful.
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch She was in the conflict because of her main flaw; Overlooking everything for her dream, that was were she made the kinda messed up decision. By deciding to kiss a frog to get her dream. Her going to Facilier wouldn't have made sense tbh because she's grown up in this city, she knows exactly who he is and what he does, and she knows hes the "shadow man". I don't think you need to hammer down the whole idea that they "are both messed up" like that when you can already see the consequences of her actions throughout the movie, like people being disappointing she doesn't get it or complaining, and also getting herself into this mess in the first place. You don't have to show both of their flaws in the same way to make either less valid
The movie wasn't even animated in house because it was a secondary project, and they repurposed it into a movie in less than a year. The crunch must had been terrible. And if this is a success, then this is going to be the norm, mid slop made by subcontracted companies.
Another problem with the sequel as well is the VILLAIN itself... the song indicates that the villain Matangi is "dangerous," but I don't see her as a "dangerous" villain... Disney is definitely going downhill with they're villain arc! 😭
Yeah exactly! Like she was helpful! She wants Moana and Maui to succeed. They should have had a villain duet with her and the Ocean God maybe, and that way we could have seen him earlier while getting an understanding of what they both want, and the idea she's just pretending.
What was really sad is that you have Moana and her sister using the Ocean to send messages to each other in a really "blink and you miss it" moment, but then it was just... that was it. And why does the god of the ocean only have control of the ocean in the weird spirit realm? It would have been way more interesting if the entire ocean was sort of held hostage and Moana had to "save it", and it couldn't help her at any point of the movie. Like they could have done a "I want to save the ocean like how the ocean saved me". It's just so sad 😭😭😭😭
I think the problem with Disney now is that they’re terrified of having any negative female archetypes, because they think for some reason it’s blasphemous against women. 😑 When in actuality some of their best women are villains! Let them be bad, show off their power darn it!
37:30 Sorry, I heard “Engineer with a bleached strip of hair” and was hit so hard with an image of Varian from Tangled The Series that I immediately dropped what I was doing to google the character. It’s not uncanny, but I have to wonder if there was any cross influence there - Varian is the most popular TTS character by far. Even if not, there’s a joke I could make here about nickels.
Haven’t finished the video just yet, but can I just voice my disappointment with how Disney has completely used Auli’i Cravalho??? They did her so dirty when they pulled her show off their channel and their streaming service, and they were more than happy to keep her away from any Moana projects they were getting to work on until they got real scared this year and brought her back…for this? The bar was ALREADY low you guys, no need to outdo yourselves now 🤦♀️
Honestly speaking, I don’t dislike Nareen because at least he does kind of make a change to be better and actually work hard at the end. He’s not perfect, but he’s pretty decent. I get why you don’t like Maui either, for me personally it’s for a completely different reason. I don’t like Maui because he seems like a bit of a Dwayne Johnson insert, and I feel like after the failure of some of his other movies, he goes back to this role as a way to gain something. That’s why I don’t like him. I feel like he’s kind of there to fuel someone’s ego a bit. I don’t hate Dwayne or anything like that, I just am really tired of him kind of playing the same character…
Oh don’t worry, we will talk about him being a Dwayne Johnson insert LOL. Because it was worse in this movie than the first one imo 😭 with Naveen it’s more like, if it happens ONCE in a while in Disney movies that’s fine, but you have Naveen, then you have Flynn who is like, thief Naveen, then you have Kristoff, who is Mountain Man Flynn… see what I’m saying haha
@ I kind of see what your saying. I’m just saying that while maven isn’t great, I’d rather have him then have a self insert character that’s there to fuel someone’s ego. Also thanks for the reply 👍☺️☺️
I love that your energy is "I'm gonna disassemble this piece of media because I'm baffled by what they have done with something I love, but aggressively."
I'm sure the new team dealt with corporate interference and a short deadline, but I definitely think the moment Disney elevated the show to a movie, they should've at least pushed out the release date and reached out to Musker, Clements, and Miranda to return and use the newer cast for an unrelated project, maybe another PI musical.
Yeah I agree with you. Announcing this only 9 months ago is insane. And that’s a great point about not having the original directors either. If Disney was smart and wanted to screw with Netflix, they’d have Barlow and Bear write a Bridgerton-like romance animated movie. But instead we got… this 😭😭😭😭
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Even without Musker and Clements, having THREE directors and making one of them a co-writer for the screenplay was a misfire for me, personally (though I do respect the representation). Disney has me so romance-starved, I started shipping Moana with the Melanesian (I'm assuming) wayfinder she locked eyes with at the end of the film. The art book has four wayfinders including Moana, and I kinda wish they were the main cast. Perhaps it could be like "Raya and the Last Dragon" where Moana goes to the different islands instead of the connecting island, and Nalo/Matangi tries to create distortion, conflict, and mistrust between them. At least then, the message of getting lost/finding another way to do things would be more relevant, rather than just going underwater to touch the island.
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Actually netflix was cool with bear and barlow making the bridgerton musical because they weren’t profiting off the IP, they gave the proceeds to charity. They even offered bear and barlow opportunity to make it canon and have them officially make a bridergton musical but bear and barlow declined it and then proceeded to stage a concert that would make money for themselves. netflix isnt cool with that because thats copyright infringement and sued the women. Those ladies were absolutely greedy hacks who declined the offer of a lifetime and now disney thinks theyre qualified to make music for a disney film. surprise, surprise the music sucks and everyone is complaining about it.
Sadly I do not think this movie will flop just because it’s a sequel to a very popular and beloved movie. Unlike Wish. it was a brand new movie that was just bad and that’s why it flopped
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuchi mean I really do hope it flops and look at movies like spellbound, and say “we can be doing that” I hope it encourages Disney to make great movies again
I'm glad I got my tickets to the LMM Renaissance tour. I didn't even realize how beloved the original Moana soundtrack was until I saw people having visceral reactions to this follow-up soundtrack. I don't know what happened, but it became cool to mean mug Lin ever since Hamilton's re-release and I think it's caused people to forget that he actually is pretty good at what he does.
Ironically, this looks like it was a decent little show I would have liked to give a watch. But now most of it will forever be lost and that'll definitely bother me if I ever watch this movie.
As a Polish dub actress I find it fascinating whenever English Native Speakers are shocked and appauled by the lip synch not beeing 100% perfect and the dub in general, because they are just SO USED to having all the animation made around their language. We don't notice that in other parts of the world unless it's REALLY jarring. It's kinda funny and seems sometimes like a neatpick, but when the animation is SUPPOSE to match 100% then I suppose it might be more distracting than when it's completly different...
I’m glad I made a double feature of Wicked and Spellbound and not this after hearing about it. Thank god Alan and Stephen are saving the musical theatre community in terms of movies
YUP! Like for everyone else reading this comment too, please go watch Wicked and Spellbound. You do not need this!!! The songs in Spellbound are SO much better in terms of how they are written and more emotional 😭
@ Honestly it sucks how much flack Spellbound it’s getting, sure it’s not perfect, but I still really liked it and the songs were great. I hate how everyone immediately calls it a Disney ripoff just because it’s an animated musical about a princess
@@cartoonfangirl1847to be honest the movies that feel like ripoffs are the recent Disney films like this one☠️like they are ripping off themselves at this point
OMG YES!! I was so excited for your video on Moana 2. When I was watching the movie in theaters and heard the songs, I remembered exactly what you said in your first video, about Moana's "I want" song. IT'S ALL POP MUSIC!! I didn't feel like I was watching a musical movie, it was a random story with pop segments and videoclip breaks. You're 100% right!!
I had such high hopes that the movie versions would be better but they were not 😭😭😭😭 I’m glad someone else noticed because it was genuinely so awful. Also we mention this at some point but it was like a karaoke track playing behind the singers. It was barely intertwined with each other volume wise. It was just so hollow and empty and weird???
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Exactly!! Plus, no personality in their performances whatsoever! In the songs, I feel like most of the VA's were more interested in showing their singing habilities/vocal range than giving a character filled performance!! 🥲 Like, the songs don't feel exclusive to the characters. Any character could've sung that. That's why I think it felt empty and lifeless 😢 And the vague lyrics don't help either!! I really wish we got the TV series instead :(
YUP. Here's the thing about that: I watched a very interesting video about how now with Jennifer Lee gone, they need what is basically a filler movie so Disney animation can recover under new leadership and of course, make some money. On top of that, film critics (or like... film... study people? Not critics but the people who study film history as well) are saying that Hollywood is going to shift from movies that are more progressive with their messaging to safe things that are completely inoffensive. And that's the sad part: Disney has always been, on some level, "offensive" to the parent who just wants to sit their child in front of the TV. The Little Mermaid is about the flaws of a parent and Ariel's independence (which parents even now still don't like). Beauty and the Beast deals with an underdog, outcast narrative. Howard Ashman also worked on both those movies, and he was a gay man who was dying from AIDS and interjected queerness into the work. Hunchback of Notre Dame is super dark in every regard with it's religious corruption, disability intertwined issues, and in a more literal way than Beauty and the Beast, about discrimination. It may be popular now to make something so shallow that it appeals to the lowest common denominator, but that is not what made good art. It is not what made Disney.
this video saved me, I was almost asleep while working today, trying my best to stay awake (and failing) but then this video popped on my feed and hearing you smashing this movie made my sleep run away XD AND NOW HUNTER IS HERE TOO!!!
The worst offense a movie, or any media, can commit is being forgettable. Terrible movies are enjoyable in their own way, whether they're funny with how bad they are or they make you upset enough to rewrite them, they have their place (I learned a lot about musicals purely to spite Wish and now want to write my own). Good ones are obvious, they make you feel, learn something, and inspire you. But forgettable movies, where you don't learn anything, grow attached to the characters, or alleviate boredom especially, are a complete waste of time, money, and any real talents that may have worked on them.
Gosh I love hearing Calxiyn complain and I'm not even being sarcastic, my attention span is awful so I need to be constantly listening to something while working, you're saving me here Calxiyn lmao
It probably makes sense that their brigerton music was popular cause they had genuine time to work on something that was based off a long running tv show, one that they probably really loved and rewatched and knew intimately
I remember listening to Beyond for the first time, and I was thrown off when I heard "call" and "reply" because it sounds very cellphone, but I was like "hey, it makes sense in context, maybe I'm just trippin." Glad to see that wasn't a dud, but apparently just the tone of this whole show
OH NOOOOOOOOOOO IS IT REALLY BAD!?!??! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I can't watch this my heart is broken 22:30 oh god so we've finally hit the digital version of the "Return Of Jafar" era....
Welcome back Disney Direct-to-Video sequels 💀. It's not even as fun as Cinderella 3 where at least Prince Charming is hilarious or Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch which made me cry. This was like...Return of Jafar bad 😭
This is just like the direct to DVD beauty and the beast sequel "Belle's magical world" It instantly became a "movie" after the supposed tv show got cancelled after only 3 episodes! (Just like Moana 2)
It’s literally so bad. I can’t believe the Disney executives thought in good faith this “deserved” to be a movie, it’s so completely hollow and you can CLEARLY see it’s a TV show. It has the cuts of the TV show cuts 😭
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch The second I saw your short about the first song they previewed from the movie, I was like "Oh God, I know where _this_ film is going".
Seeing it having the biggest thanksgiving opening ever on record, I guess the rest of Disney’s films are gonna be low effort sequels with unpolished animation and songwriting. And I thought Encanto was gonna be the spark for a new era
i TOTALLY agree with the lack of agency in disney princess protagonists lately its so... annoying. And difficult to talk abt with ppl bc im surrounded irl by "cinderella is antifeminist" ppl (OBNOXIOUS 2 ME, AN ABUSE SURVIVOR) irl. But I really wish disney movies had better screenwriters, i love writing for animation and its SO frustrating to see bad animated movie scripts
I am so sad we dont get good music. Litterally I am allways listening to disney music nonstop, but the last couple of years nothing good, at least since encanto.... Well at least I have epic for the mean time, which is soooooooo awsome
I think the biggest problem with Moana 2 is that there are 3 distinct internal issues that Moana is dealing with, All fighting for screen time, and are largely incompatible with each other from a story perspective, issue number 1: Moana is worried about never making it back home, dying Etc, number 2: Moana is worried about living up peoples expectations and being a good leader, Issue Number 3: (that only appears during the songs) Moana is worried about losing herself and about how this journey will change her, The songs feel shoehorned in, and the conflict the songs introduce feels like a conflict for a different princess, it doesn't fit Moana, The songs don't reflect what Moana is dealing with during the text of the rest of the movie, confusing the messaging, plot, character conflicts, and actively taking away from the rest of the movie, I do not think that Wish is a better movie than Moana 2, But without a doubt Wish is a better *Musical*
No because the Bridgerton musical was BEAUTIFUL it was totally filled with potential, and Burn for You reminded me of so many broadway songs I grew up with. It just needed a little bit of polish. They did those two women dirty.
My favourite song is the one for the Queen personally. The fact that she uses the entertainment of Lady Whistledown (and everything else) to distract from how much pain she’s in about her husband was really interesting 😭 like that song had so much depth. Disney needs to mentor their songwriters properly 🥴
At least Wish was bad in a way that made people feel something. It had the potential to be a good movie with some tweaking and rewrites, inspiring creativity. Moana 2 just feels like a bad... bad. One that gives you no emotions. One that makes you feel like there's no passion in the movie and inspires no passion in you. Which is really sad, because I'm sure the people making the SHOW felt passionate about their work and wanted it to be good! However, because it was made to be a show and repurposed into a movie for a cash grab, it makes their passionate work feel passionless because you know the higher-ups at Disney screwed over their work...
We didn’t forget but I think we thought Maui was born that way from a sort of Greek god like love affair or a prophecy Vs “made” after the fact. Do you know what I mean? So if Moana is now a Demi-god I need some explanations lol

I know this isn't exactly about Moana but I just wanna say that I disagree with the assessment of Naveen because the movie is about the both of them being flawed and learning from eachother to better themselves. Like, Tiana has to learn how to have fun and that love is most important, while Naveen has to learn about responsibility and hard work. Idk I just love Naveen man he's my favourite Disney himbo😭 Also the Rapunzel x Jackfrost AMV's analogy was so real
With Naveen, I explain it more in the video that I'm referencing. It's not that Naveen's character is bad, but more like that with Tiana they were too afraid to give her flaws. Like Naveen is a womanizer who parties every night and wants to marry a woman he barely knows for her money. Tiana just works a little too hard and needs to have fun. The movie never presents them as equally flawed, with Tiana always having this moral superiority over him, when for the sake of Tiana's character and her agency, it may have been a better option to have her also make a deal with Facilier. That way it could have been "I wanted this thing so badly I was willing to put my own values aside to do it" instead of Naveen just dragging her into the plot. I also think that he should have gotten his own song, because that's what really turns the tide with characters like Flynn imo. I like Naveen, he's only the start of the questionable tropes with the Princes, he's not the most egregious offender by any stretch.
I was honestly really excited I wanted to go see this movie but I decided to listen to your take instead and now I'm more leaning to go see wicked.... I was planning on seeing gladiator 2 but now I'm not so sure either lmao
Pleeeease go see Wicked! With Gladiator I’m not the target demographic so I’ve just heard it was kinda mid but I can’t be sure - with Wicked though I am ABSOLUTELY SURE. PLEASE GO SEE WICKED IF YOU LIKE MUSICALS 😭😭😭😭 I want to go see it again so bad, I wish I spent my $40 ($20 each ticket) on that honestly.

37:35 I might be wrong but I think the engineer girl has the blonde streak because she’s meant to be Melanesian, and multiple Melanesian countries are known to have black people with natural blonde hair due to a gene mutation
I just subbed you’re too funny and bold!! 😂😂Also what’s your opinion on Mufasa: The Lion King that’s coming out next month?? My whole family does not want to see that at all 💀
Ahaha thank you! So with Mufasa, this is crazy for me to say but I am actually curious. Because here's the thing: I don't like the way the animation has gone, but unlike Lion King as "remake", this is an original story at LEAST. I had no idea it was coming out next month though, even though I saw the trailer for it twice in the theatre (in front of Wicked and Moana 2 I think LOL). Lin Manuel Miranda is doing the music and so there's at least that. I'm not too big on the Lion King lore but I know some people are upset because this goes against some pre-established lore in the novels and other shows. But yeah, TLDR: this may surprise you but I am intrigued. I think it's going to be a solid 7/10 but anything that is a musical automatically gets my curiosity, if it was not a musical I would probably not be interested in going to see it. But please go with your family to see Wicked first LOL
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Ofc!! Also that’s a well thought out reasoning and I can see that lol. IF you’re recommending me Wicked then it must be good. I’ll see if I can, I’m going to Disney World next week tho. But those are solid points and I can see that. For me I don’t plan on watching it cause A) they couldn’t even get James Earls Jones for the adult Mufasa, may he R.I.P., B) as soon as I saw Donald Glover, Beyoncé, and Blue Ivy Carter in there I’m like /_\ because respectfully Beyoncé can’t voice act that well. Now can she sing amazingly yes but voice acting nah and plus they’re gonna make it all about her and her daughter, similar to what they did in the remake they ruined so many songs, and C) it’s just not gonna be the same without James. He made Mufasa and Darth Vader too iconic. Now I’m more excited for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 that’s coming out December 20, 2024, what’s about your opinion on that? And yes Shadow is my all time favorite Sonic character ever since Sonic X and Sonic Adventures 2. Oh both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King both release on December 20 so theaters are gonna be packed 😅
I went to go see it tursday (my movie theater had an early release for it) and im not gonna lie. I went into it high asf off some edibles. Even though i didnt go into it with a sober mind, it made me see it from a different persepctive. I swear to you, when i walked out of that movie theater i was like "was i too high? or was this movie genuinely all over the place??" It was so bad, i could tell it needed more depth. there was so much missing information wise, it all felt rushed. from her learning of the past to all the way to the end of the movie (dont wanna give spoilers in case some people want to go see it) that should have been spread out more in my opinion. This movie was a children cashgrab. even the parents in that movie theater were looking around like they wanted the torture to end and i dont blame them Only W song was "Beyond"
@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Thank you! Wicked honestly looked super appealing after your review and other snippets I have seen. Tbh, I had hope that Moana 2 would be something good. I wanted a spectacular movie (as I think we all did), but I restrained myself from believing it would be based on Disney’s recent history. This really upset me to see Moana 2 being on the same bar and/or even lower than Wish. Moana was a childhood favorite of mine (first saw it in theaters when I was ten), and to see such a regression in every aspect seven-ish years later is such a disappointment. The biggest red flag I’ve held since my hearing of Moana 2 is that the bar that you need to pass in order for you to be considered a “Good TV Show” is much, MUCH lower than the bar that you need to pass in order to be a “Good Movie.” I fear that the directors, despite knowing the change, still compared the quality to how good of a TV show this newly-turned-movie could be, which caused a lot of misjudgment in how good the quality actually was… It could also be possible that I’m giving these people waaaay too much slack and they just wanted a money-making merchandise opportunity. 😭💀
I honestly didn’t feel the absence of Lin Manuel Miranda. The movie was so painfully mid, even its forgettable but serviceable songs were too good for it.
I’m genuinely curious do you think that Disney animation needs to die a little in order to be like “reborn”? I only ask this because when the renaissance started Disney animation was also at an all time low and the department was like out in warehouses off campus. The problem is if this were to happen again we would have to pray that an Ashman and Menkin appear to help pull Disney animation together again. As more of the sequels come out I just feel like Disney is repeating its own history. When Eisner was putting out all of those sequels and openly hating on animation. Michael Eisner - “We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only objective.”
Why do you think everyone that doesn’t like the movie is part of some conspiracy when we’re just normal people just like you 🥴🥴 and we thought it was very bad for a Disney movie, as opposed to a TV show. Which this would have been just fine.
I literally could not believe it. As soon as Moana did not fit into the background and the lips were not syncing with the voice acting I knew it was over
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch (Haven't finished watching the review so not sure if you said this) But That's because the original cast didn't join until after the animation was done. They had a different (cheaper) cast when it was supposed to be a tv show and because most shots were already finished the original actors had to basically dub over the already created shots like they would do for anime.
1:23:55 this is an excellent analysis however all I can think of when you say that is EPIC lmao. Which I have no doubt is because hunchback seems to be a big inspiration for Jorge because of his love for hellfire (can’t remember if he’d said it was his first time watching it in that short but I doubt it, I’m just giving myself the opportunity to be wrong)
Calxiyn, i love your videos and the energy you bring to them, you're really good at what you do- but for the longest time i've felt something was off about your mic audio and for the life of me could not place what it was. the only thing i could really tell for sure is your mic seems to be peaking, but because it otherwise sounded like you were talking normally i assumed maybe it was a mic quality issue. now that i've heard Hunter's voice through your mic (disproving that it's a mic quality issue), i think i finally know what it is....... _Cal are you stage projecting into your mic by chance??_
Well I can tell you at least the mic isn’t peaking 😂🤣 all our audio sits around -8 to -12db (whereas clipping/peaking is like, 0). I naturally talk loud but what I honestly think it is, is just the pitch of my voice. I’ve noticed on some devices it’s more ass than others, like my phone and my AirPods because Apple has its own volume control, whereas on my PC with my headphones it sounds super different. Unfortunately I bought this microphone because of my boyfriend and I didn’t really take into account the fact that a lot of reviewers and himself obviously would have a lot of bass in their voices while I don’t 😭 I try to apply some lower range richness in post-editing but I’ve been wondering for a long time if there’s a microphone out there that may be more well-suited for a higher pitch, instead of being thin when there’s no bass 🥴 I appreciate any advice though if anyone wants to jump onto the thread!
Well I’m not exaggerating lol, and also “there are movies that are worse than Wish” doesn’t matter ??? I’m talking about what I’ve seen. And we’re talking about Disney movie musicals, not the movie that auto plays on Amazon Prime that you are convinced no one else has ever seen ya know 😂
QUESTIONS COMMENT THREAD: What questions do you have?
Hey Cal is the spellbound review coming out today?
Don’t do Lin Manuel Miranda if you’re not Lin Manuel Miranda…
People srsly hated on him like he had done some horrendous crime and will say stuff they’d never have the guts to say to his face while he’s just…doing his job…
If people are gonna hate him for being 'everywhere', then they better be prepared to hate Alan Menken, Randy Newman, Stephen Schwartz, Hans Zimmer.....they're composers who are also 'everywhere' and have made your favorite theme songs, film scores, showtunes.....
I think the hate was mostly a joke and a meme, I doubt anyone actually hated him, right?
Based on several articles released today, Lin got the wcript for Mufasa in early 2022, but by then they already had B&B working on the tv show. If I had to guess, Disney probably would've asked him to return if they had planned it as a film from the get-go, but they kinda went the cheap route for a show.
The moment I saw that Lin Manuel Miranda was not doing the music I knew it was going to be bad
The internet owes him an apology 😭😂
Exactly my thoughts
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Hamilton (and In the Heights) became popular for a reason. It just suffered from "Let it Go" syndrome.
Truly peak Disney spin off treatment for a ghost.
let me tell you I LOVE when a reviewer has SO MUCH PASSION like yes girl the movie is so bad I'm gonna do a backflip into a woodchipper YOU GO GIRLLLL

It really sucks because there are so many Polynesian Gods that could’ve been introduced in this film, but Matangi and Nalo were sort of disappointing.
The fact Matangi's only redeeming feature was her character design saddens me.

Hazbin Hotel 🤝 Trolls Band Together: Flawed musicals that still outshone Disney in terms of making a musical. Also outshone Joker 2.
Bahahaha oh god. I mean I have my complaints about Hazbin Hotel but… man. It is better than this.

@@CalxiynCaresTooMuchso it’s not really the set up that you don’t like, it’s the execution? Unless I’m understanding that incorrectly
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuchThat is a greats idea. But did you noticed that the ocean friend was BARELY in the movie? That saddens me so much 😩
What was really sad is that you have Moana and her sister using the Ocean to send messages to each other in a really "blink and you miss it" moment, but then it was just... that was it.

That's why I think it felt empty and lifeless 😢
And the vague lyrics don't help either!! I really wish we got the TV series instead :(
Sad to report but it looks like this movie is a gold mine for disney. No lessons shall be learned and more of this will be crapped out

Lmaooo, now when people ask why we’re yelling all the time I can tell them it’s because we need to wake y’all up 😂🤣 I’m glad you’re enjoying it!!!
Thank YOU Furina!!
It probably makes sense that their brigerton music was popular cause they had genuine time to work on something that was based off a long running tv show, one that they probably really loved and rewatched and knew intimately
we are being FED this Thanksgiving
Disney didn’t feed us so I have to!
The whirlpool is Charybdis, which is also a giant monster beneath the waves.
I remember listening to Beyond for the first time, and I was thrown off when I heard "call" and "reply" because it sounds very cellphone, but I was like "hey, it makes sense in context, maybe I'm just trippin."
Glad to see that wasn't a dud, but apparently just the tone of this whole show
This is why Disney sequels used to be straight to video.
OH NOOOOOOOOOOO IS IT REALLY BAD!?!??! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I can't watch this my heart is broken
22:30 oh god so we've finally hit the digital version of the "Return Of Jafar" era....
This as chaotic as I expected. Thank you for your passion in this review.
Ahhhh thank you so much!!! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Okay, what the Hell happened to the Disney _I_ know and love?! Have they just stopped trying?!?!
And people gaslit me and told me the movie version would be better too or be a duet and explain the weird arc 😭 and it wasn’t even a duet!!!
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch People will do _anything_ to cling onto hope that Disney will be good again.

There is literally a Sesame Street movie, Elmo in Grouchland, that does musical better than this.
46:20 this little tangent about Scylla and Charybdis made me wanna listen to their respective songs in EPIC the musical lol
You absolutely should. The Scylla song especially is top tier (though it's got a major plot spoiler from Act I)
@maryammuhib oh don't worry, I've already listened to every song, and I love both sea monsters' songs so much
12:48 OMG Hunter’s hypotheticals are hilarious 😂
I am so sad we dont get good music. Litterally I am allways listening to disney music nonstop, but the last couple of years nothing good, at least since encanto....
Well at least I have epic for the mean time, which is soooooooo awsome
I think the biggest problem with Moana 2 is that there are 3 distinct internal issues that Moana is dealing with,
All fighting for screen time, and are largely incompatible with each other from a story perspective,
issue number 1: Moana is worried about never making it back home, dying Etc,
number 2: Moana is worried about living up peoples expectations and being a good leader,
Issue Number 3: (that only appears during the songs) Moana is worried about losing herself and about how this journey will change her,
The songs feel shoehorned in,
and the conflict the songs introduce feels like a conflict for a different princess, it doesn't fit Moana,
The songs don't reflect what Moana is dealing with during the text of the rest of the movie, confusing the messaging, plot, character conflicts, and actively taking away from the rest of the movie,
I do not think that Wish is a better movie than Moana 2,
But without a doubt Wish is a better *Musical*
Also yay Hunter’s début on the channel
So what I’m hearing is, we should just rewatch Centaurworld
YES!!!
It may not be your cup of tea but it's a 100% worth giving it a try
I guess you guys forgot, but in the first movie Maui also became a Demi-god despite originally being human. Just wanted to clarify.
We didn’t forget but I think we thought Maui was born that way from a sort of Greek god like love affair or a prophecy Vs “made” after the fact. Do you know what I mean? So if Moana is now a Demi-god I need some explanations lol
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch Oh no, I totally get it, cause I made the same mistake too.

Idk I just love Naveen man he's my favourite Disney himbo😭
Also the Rapunzel x Jackfrost AMV's analogy was so real
Yoooo that actually makes sense though thanks for elaborating :D
I was honestly really excited I wanted to go see this movie but I decided to listen to your take instead and now I'm more leaning to go see wicked.... I was planning on seeing gladiator 2 but now I'm not so sure either lmao
Pleeeease go see Wicked! With Gladiator I’m not the target demographic so I’ve just heard it was kinda mid but I can’t be sure - with Wicked though I am ABSOLUTELY SURE. This is my first vid from this channel. Loved it + subbed midway through bc the ENERGY is flawless. i sorta got jumpscared by the arcane mention at the end & i cant wait to hear you complain. I have been obsessed with season 1 for years. (I mean, you can see my pfp.) & it's WILD how S2 is only enjoyable when i dont think.
Anyway, time to go down the list & watch all your stuff.
37:35 I might be wrong but I think the engineer girl has the blonde streak because she’s meant to be Melanesian, and multiple Melanesian countries are known to have black people with natural blonde hair due to a gene mutation
Ohhhh that’s very interesting!
As a Yugioh girlie once upon a time, I understood the Exodia reference!
I swear to you, when i walked out of that movie theater i was like "was i too high? or was this movie genuinely all over the place??"
It was so bad, i could tell it needed more depth. there was so much missing information wise, it all felt rushed. from her learning of the past to all the way to the end of the movie (dont wanna give spoilers in case some people want to go see it) that should have been spread out more in my opinion.
This movie was a children cashgrab. even the parents in that movie theater were looking around like they wanted the torture to end and i dont blame them
Only W song was "Beyond"
Well that was disappointing 😬
P.S. Mulan II was awful mostly because of how Mushu was done so dirty and there are anime dubs that are hit or miss
I was almost wanting to see this movie for myself. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME AND MY CASH! I’m broke as is. 😭
PLEASE GO SEE WICKED IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY --- BUT OTHERWISE YES SAVE YOUR MONEY BESTIE!!!!
The biggest red flag I’ve held since my hearing of Moana 2 is that the bar that you need to pass in order for you to be considered a “Good TV Show” is much, MUCH lower than the bar that you need to pass in order to be a “Good Movie.” I fear that the directors, despite knowing the change, still compared the quality to how good of a TV show this newly-turned-movie could be, which caused a lot of misjudgment in how good the quality actually was…
It could also be possible that I’m giving these people waaaay too much slack and they just wanted a money-making merchandise opportunity. 😭💀
0:39 WHAT DO YOU MEAN " You put no effort into your looks" YOU LOOK LIKE THE BEFOR AND AFTER PICKS AND YOUR THE AFTER PICK
Awwww that’s so nice 🥺 I just said that because I have no makeup on LOL
I honestly didn’t feel the absence of Lin Manuel Miranda. The movie was so painfully mid, even its forgettable but serviceable songs were too good for it.
You're right... I couldnt believe it but I absolutely liked Wish better 😐 even world-class stereo 3D rendering can't save this movie...
God you and Hunter react to horrible content based on something you like, just like me and my friends do. Love to see that familiar energy!
Ahhhhhh I’m so glad to hear that! And I’m glad it’s not just us who are crazy LOL 😂😂😂
WHAT!!! Nooo
FINALLY back from my trip, time to see my hero tear Moana 2 to atoms!
Oh wait its already out
Yup! Early screenings were on Tuesday but we went last night (Wednesday)
Christoff was such a sweetie though 😭
Moana 2 was a great movie yall just want to keep on finding reasons to diss on Disney because of Wish istg
Why do you think everyone that doesn’t like the movie is part of some conspiracy when we’re just normal people just like you 🥴🥴 and we thought it was very bad for a Disney movie, as opposed to a TV show. Which this would have been just fine.
Me and my sister started singing crypdis's song when the Giant Clam showed up lol
The songs ACTIVELY make the movie more confusing and hard to understand💀
Oh nooooo 😭😭😭😭 i had hopes that it wouldn't be as bad as it seemed 😢
I literally could not believe it. As soon as Moana did not fit into the background and the lips were not syncing with the voice acting I knew it was over
@@CalxiynCaresTooMuch (Haven't finished watching the review so not sure if you said this) But That's because the original cast didn't join until after the animation was done. They had a different (cheaper) cast when it was supposed to be a tv show and because most shots were already finished the original actors had to basically dub over the already created shots like they would do for anime.
Yeah we mention that a few minutes in (around 2-4 I think)

Hunter is HILARIOUS so I’m glad this is her Calxiyn Cares Too Much debut, I could not do it without her 😂🥺🥰
Calxiyn, i love your videos and the energy you bring to them, you're really good at what you do- but for the longest time i've felt something was off about your mic audio and for the life of me could not place what it was. the only thing i could really tell for sure is your mic seems to be peaking, but because it otherwise sounded like you were talking normally i assumed maybe it was a mic quality issue.
now that i've heard Hunter's voice through your mic (disproving that it's a mic quality issue), i think i finally know what it is.......
I think the worst thing is they would point it to the complete women composers/composer team, instead of their Management....
Sheldon Cooper!? BAZINGA!
The songs were so bad that I believe I disassociated until they were over. I don't remember a single song melody nor any of the lyrics.

That too! But I think what Hunter was talking about was specifically buildings that disappear into the skyline lol
There’s a lot of movies that are worse than Wish. People are exaggerating how they feel about it. That movie really isn’t that bad.
