      The army shown was put together during 2nd ed... when company composition was more related to the 2nd ed Epic rules than anything else (due to 2nd ed epic army building using entire companies as the basic building block of army composition, bolstered with detachment and special choices).

    • @TheSmart-CasualGamer
      @TheSmart-CasualGamer 5 лет назад +14

      Fair point. I'm so used to the fourth edition Marine Codex's guide to a chapter's company composition, I just assume that's been standard since Second. I never played second or third, so I've never been 100% sure.

    • @Senbei01
      @Senbei01 5 лет назад +11

      @@TheSmart-CasualGamer All the company sizes used to come printed on cards for when you wanted to build your army. The company composition was different back then too (a Battle Company was 1 platoon of 30 Tactical Marines, 1 platoon of 30 assault marines, 1 platoon of 30 marines in Devastator squads and a command squad - all with accompanying Rhinos). Nowadays I think they may have made them go heavier on the Tactical squad complement.
      It did limit your options a bit, for larger games. I don't think you could make a Space Marine army big enough to face the old Epic Ork horde I have. You'd still have about 2/3 of your points left to spend even after you'd bought your 10 companies... and That horde is just a '1 or 2 of everything' army designed to sit in a cabinet.... if I ever finish it.

    • @abeljames3660
      @abeljames3660 3 года назад +4

      Perhaps they are just in a normal squad formation, tactical squads are the basic squad formation. No point being in a battle organisation for a single photo.

    • @auretioustaak6579
      @auretioustaak6579 Год назад +2

      @@Senbei01 the 3rd edition Space Marine literally spelt out exactly what was in each company in the codex itself. They didn't just display the whole chapter without other context. Your Battle Companies had 6 units of 10 Tactical Marines, 2 units of 10 Assault marines and 2 units of 10 devastator Marines, plus company command and supporting transports and vehicles listed.
      Whilst there are indeed 1,000 space marines in the Chapter GW painted at the time, it also was not perfect because it was painted in the generalised a battle company has 60 tactical 20 assault 20 devastator units, a reserve company had x units in x ratios etc, but was also lacking enough command models/units. Contrary to this, the page in the 3rd ed Space Marine Codex that detailed the data on what the Ultramarines Chapter comprised of, many of the units listed are under strengthed or in varying numbers and sizes not strictly to what the companies are defined as elsewhere for the time. E.g The 9th Reserve Company did have 10 devastator units but these were 6 units of 10, 1 unit of 9, 2 units of 6 and 1 unit of 5, and then on top of that, there were only 8 rhinos assigned to the company, as opposed to other listings at the time where a rhino was present for every 10 marines on foot in the chapter. I like to look at it as the detailed break down of the Chapter showed that they were a normal military body with casualties affecting unit compositions till new recruits could fill their places, and not the pristine perfect exemplars of the Codex that they seems to be these days. Still, for the time, tha5t Chapter was amazing and that Thunderhawk Gunship, there were very few of them on the planet at this time so it was extra spicy especially if you were a kid during this era.

They make it clear that the vehicle crew are not from the regular squads, but that each vehicle has its own crew, so each rhino is +2, and each squad has its own rhino, and each company also have a set of other vehicles, most of which have 2 crew members, and then there are marines that are outside of the regular company structure. Also to run further salt into my heart salamander’s lost two more characters going into 9th edition however those character never had models but datasheets leaving us salamander’s with only 3 named characters and no unique units and 1 of them being a forge world exclusive (albeit a beast of a unit) salamander’s GW forgers us a lot and I hope I eat my words later down the line.

    I love all the stuffed animals in the background in your videos LOL :P I have some of them as well..those squishmellows are incredible when you need a cloud to sleep on :) Also, great videos! These bring back some serious memories for me as a child playing these games; I now own a local game store. Reminds me of the good ol' days..when turns took hours, and games took weekends...and you were terrified to turn your tanks and expose the weaker armour...and when you could shell your own men because of scatter...and...ah well..this old fart is off to bed. :) I also saw your recent video with Armorcast. I know the gentleman who owns that now, and stock some of his stuff. High quality miniatures, and great conversation every time he stops into the shop to paint (he's quite the painter as well). Ah well...now it's really time to go to bed LOL.

    I happen to have enjoyed a pralines & cream ice cream from a local company for many years, and I think it's a perfect space-wolves ice cream favor. Not only is it humorously dessert-y for a space wolf, it's also noticeably spiked with whiskey.
    Also, I had that codex when I was a kid, and I did in fact count them; there are 1000 marines in those pictures, excluding HQ and anyone inside a vehicle.

    I can confirm that yes, that is the entire Ultramarine chapter.
    Each tactical squad is made up of ten members, and there is 100 (or about) members of 1 company. Meaning, that all I had to do was count the Rhinos, and special characters.

      @@gerardmontgomery280 You apologize for that! The Taste The Rainbow codex was glorious! Shuriken catapults with the range of boltguns and better armor penetration! D-Cannons with gloriously fun and complicated rules! Eldar Dreadnaughts (wraithlords) and wraitguard with vehicle damage rules which could go boom when hit and take half your army along with them if unlucky! Lore, lore and more lore! SPACE ELVES RIDING SPACE DINOSAURS!!!

    Marine Veterans were the goat unit back then. 264 points for 8 of them with terminator honours, bolt pistol & CCW so they'd get 4 attacks on the charge, I'd chuck them in a rhino with a chaplain and if it was a big game, a hero with a lightning claw & storm bolter and they would absolutely blend anything with their ~10 pistol attacks, 2 storm bolter attacks then charging to get 32 assault attacks, then 4 chaplain crozius attacks & 4 force commander lightning claw attacks (with a re-roll for being master crafted then re-roll wounds for being a LC). If you really wanted to be That Guy you could also give the Chaplain a holy relic to add another attack to everyone within 2d6 inches of them on one turn. This whole setup would only cost about 500 points so most games you'd have another 1000 or 1500 points to spend on regular marines, vehicles etc.

    Interestingly, the Ultramarines lineup is based on them shortly before the battle of Macragge, with Saul Invictus and Ancient Helveticus still being alive, while we also have some fluff pieces of Tigurius talking to Calgar of the incoming battle.
    However, the Codex is itself set in 995M41, making it already outdated.
