Are you someone who has reconnected or attempted to reconnect with your Indigenous heritage? What is the greatest piece of advice someone could have offered you that might help others?

@Matt Vieau We're so happy for you! Reaching out to the band office of your reserve is one of the best ways to reconnect. Thank you for sharing this advice. 😊

Thank you for this video. I'm Mohawk by ancestry but I've found it hard to connect with my tribe. No one wants to answer my questions. I'm grateful you are open to teaching us.

Right on sister, I can’t describe how timely and how much this video helped me with those exact feelings you were describing. I don’t always have the opportunity to watch your videos right as they come out, but it always seems something draws me to them eventually when the moment is right. Thank you very much

2 generations ago, my family relocated from the east coast of Canada. In-depth research found our many indigenous connections - my heritage. But it's been several generations and for many decades we have desired to connect with this culture (Mi'kmaq). In Ontario, how can we connect to a local tribe? Would they accept us? We desire to learn and respect the ways of our Elders and community. The question of importance is, HOW do we help create a connection with a tribe? We can start by proving our heritage... but what comes next now that we have the 'proof'?

Thank you so much for reaching out! It all starts with the drive and desire to connect for the right reasons. If you wish to connect directly with a specific tribe or nation there are ways of reaching out. You can try to see if a tribe has a website and then navigating that site to see if there is an email address for general inquiries. Hope this helps. 😊

“My” community only accepts status Indians. We’ve never lived on a reserve, have no status, but know our ancestry, culture, and I have learned our traditional language to the extent of my abilities. I was treated like I didn’t belong and publicly shamed, even though my father is a residential school survivor. I live my culture for myself, and belong to no community since I’m non-status. To me, this means that the White government has succeeded in breaking us, WITH the cooperation of the band council! The only reconciliation I’m seeing is with White people. As long as we are married to the Indian Act, that is not reconciliation.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Nathan. Connecting with your community can really get challenging. Closing yourself off from other communities is one of the mistakes discussed in this video. There are so many communities out there that would love to embrace YOU for YOU. If your journey doesn’t lead you to reconnecting with your original community, that’s okay. Be open to whatever community comes your way! We hope that this will help you be open to find a NEW community that accepts you. 😊

@@MalloryRoseCo Tiawenhk, Mígwetch! I hope that I do find a community where I will feel welcome. Right now, I don’t see how this can happen. I hope I do, one day, fell welcome in one of our communities. It really hurts my soul to not be able to connect with my own people. Blood should be thicker than colonization.

What exactly does that mean connecting with other Indigenous communities? I've seen high blood quantum natives mixed from multiple tribes that don't qualify for Tribal enrollment in any specific Nation. Or Tribal Nations that only accept members through their mothers so that "Half Natives" are ineligible. I don't mean to come off as rude at all. It's a frustrating topic to tackle regardless of Status.
