I can't imagine being a Catholic there. I've been to Britain several times and my Latin surname bought on more than a few insults and extra "attention" I've never experienced before, not home in the U.S nor anywhere else, for that matter (I've not been Catholic since I was a child).

Please be assured that the overwhelming majority of British people would not behave in this way. MmeDefarge (Expose NYC Meth Labs) On a personal note I have received great kindness in my two visits to the U S (plus - I have to say - the enormous experience of Yosemite and other beautiful places). On one occasion we lost a car key and an American couple could not do enough to persuade the locksmith to grind a spare when we looked to be struggling on account of our lack of documentary proof. The couple came to visit us in London and I was able to contact an English girl on behalf of the locksmith so it was good to do that in return. Good luck, anyway. Andy
+MmeDefarge (Expose NYC Meth Labs) Well. If you look in your history books you will recognise athe name Cromwell and what he (the english) did to the catholics. Especially in Ireland (now Erie and Northern Ireland). If so, you will understand the climat between catholics and protestants.
KaiWK 1234 Oh, I'm quite aware of the history. Brits colonized the States too but didn't bring Britain's rabid anti-Catholicism with them here, for the most part. I most encountered it there and also from people from some former British colonies who have come to the States (and I'm not even Catholic any more.( I can't imagine how bad it would be if I still were.) Britain has a long history of excesses on both sides, Protestants and Catholics but of course the Catholics get the brunt of it being in the minority.

I've been a Catholic my whole life and I still feel exactly like Charles when he makes that weird face having to listen to Cordelia. Religion sure was a weird matter back when Waugh wrote this book. Wish it had just been a whole novel about Charles and Sebastian instead.
I do wonder how Cordelia would have dealt with a situation where Charles looked at her and said you do realize that you are supporting a religion that burned people at the stake because they had the nerve to worship in a different way. I guess I’m getting old and getting cranky, but I really would’ve wanted to lay some facts on that self-righteous little twit.
I don't like bridey. he quickly made his youngest sister upset enough that she was crying and sebastian was highly annoyed at him. I think jeremy didn't know what to think of him. bridey sure knows how to put a damper on a dinner.
+yootuba in fact Catholicism hasn't changed . it is just that you don't know what Catholicism is even though you call yourself Catholic. if one can't be different(or 'weird' as you say ) enough to hold out against rather unsubstantiated 'common sense ' notions in modern secular western society, one shouldn't be Catholic

that would be absolutely missing the point, Waugh's point for the book. It's very deep.
