The Mitford books left an incredibly warm impression on my heart & always will. I loved stepping into Mitford & getting to know all those characters. Every book isn’t for everyone, no shame in that at all. ❤
Hi! This was your first video I've encountered (thanks, algorithm), and I was drawn in because I absolutely loved this book! 😄 I'm not even a person who has a religion (never been to a church), but I discovered this series at a lonely time in my life, and I just found it so comforting to get lost in this little town where everyone cared about each other. I only made it through the first four or so books, though, and then it all started to feel the same... And I feel about Dooley the way that you feel about Barnabas! Not that he's gross, but I'm just not a fan of children in books, generally. Good video! : )
Hello and welcome! I'm so glad the YT algorithm led you to my channel. I am so glad you found Mitford at just the right time and that it was a comfort to you. I can totally see that. I did think the characters were lovely and the book had such a wholesome vibe to it. I may revisit the series at some point, but right now I just need a bit more of a cohesive storyline that compels me to keep reading. That's funny comparing Dooley to how I felt about Barnabas. haha. I love kids though so Dooley was a highlight for me. Hope you stick around and watch more videos!
Ive read most of these. Looked then up, there are 13 or 14 now! Even tho this wasnt the series for you, now i habe to pick up the rest! Im so surprised you didnt particularly like this, you had so mich good to say about it lol.
Holy moly! I only have 6 and thought I had them all. Now I'm even more glad to not be continuing! haha. Yeah, I loved the characters, but wanted more story.
The Mitford series are my Mom's favorite book series and I remember those cozy covers on her bedside table for YEARS of my childhood. She absolutely loved them and spoke about the characters like they were real - and they were absolutely real to her! I read books 1-2 and they were fine, lovely slice of life, and I think you have to be in the right mood for them. And I LOVED Miss Sadie!
This was my beloved grandmother's favorite series in the late 80s. I was very much a Gen X cynical teenager at the time, but I read the first one because she loved it so much and wanted to share, and I loved her. I thought it was the hokiest book I had ever read and couldn't pick up another one, but now...I wish I could go back and read more and have more to share with her.
Haha. I have said the word hokey, but never seen it in print. Too funny. I can see how that was your reaction as a teen. But also how your grandma just loved it. Love that you read it though because she did love it.
I grew up in East Tennessee fairly close to Blowing Rock, NC which is where Jan Karon began The Mitford series. The thing I love the most is that I actually knew people like her characters in the book. This series is not for everyone and that’s okay but if you love the Mitford crowd they are like family.
Here’s my feelings on the Mitford series. There are so many books these days, highly hyped, that are full of sex, violence, crime, etc. This series is light, Christian based, much needed. You’ve said before that you’re not an animal lover and it seems you put a lot of critique based on the dog. Perhaps consider hanging onto them for awhile and pick one up as a break between the heavier books.
I hear what you're saying and I did appreciate that there was no language or graphic scenes of any kind in this one. I really did like that. But I just needed more story to keep me interested in continuing. I liked the characters, but was a bit bored too.
Mitford has a special place in my heart, and maybe this is just one of those book series that is a 'take it or leave it' I love the characters and after 7 books they feel like distant family. I will say that if you ever decide to pick the series back up I would recommend "out to Canaan " the 4th book, it has more moving parts and plot that the first few which are more like a world building book would be in a fantasy series. Also the dog becomes less of a character and more of a side note in the later books. thank you for at least giving it a chance.
I would definitely have a hard time just jumping to book 4. But I know if I ever get the urge to return to these characters I can grab the next on audio or the library. I'm glad I finally read it so I know.
I have zero interest in Mitford but I love hearing your thoughts on it! I've been told by several people that Jan Karon lived in Blowing Rock NC and based Mitford on it, which is so cool because we go there all the time. It's 30 min from my house! In answer to your question at the end, I really was surprised that you didn't love it! It seemed like a book that's perfect for you bc you enjoy cozier books than i do, but now that i think of it you do like your cozy books to have some heft to them. Dealing with grief, loss, moral dilemmas etc.
That is cool that it's based on a real place. I would like that connection too. It did have elements that I love, but I needed just a bit more story to keep me interested.
I had very similar feelings when I finished the first book a few years ago. I thought it was enjoyable but didn’t feel the need to continue the series. However, a few months after reading the first book, I realized I wanted to be back in the Mitford world with these characters. So I’ve been reading the next book in the series whenever I feel like picking it up and these books have become very comforting to me!
Maybe that will happen to me too. We'll see. If it does I can easily grab the next one on audio or from the library. I'm in the "clear off the shelves" stage of life right now. haha.
Glad you enjoyed it and now you know. No more dreading. I think I get attached to characters and that's what keeps me going through series. Thanks for the video.
It's been almost a year since you began, and I am SO sorry you have this opinion of At Home In Mitford, when I realized that I NEVER read the book myself! I would like to share how I was introduced to the series and make a suggestion. Focus on the Family has produced At Home In Mitford as an AUDIODRAMA! It should be in local libraries, and I listen to it EVERY year during the first fireplace lifhting of the season! Thank you SO much for sharing your perspective. I did continue reading the entire series and accompanying books. Wish you well!
I feel you! Lol I finished Catching Christmas. Did a whole vlog. Was loving it and then hit the halfway point and it lowered to a 3.75 rating. Didn't like or agree with some of the in between the line messages, didn't love the characters or romance. I gotta stop falling for the hype with these books!😂I always get my expectations up too high
Hahaha! You crack me up! The dog and the licking! I read the first few Mitford books many years ago. I liked the characters and seeing what happened with them, but it’s pretty slow. I’d probably find it boring these days, as I’m in my thriller phase. If you ever miss the characters, you can always listen to the audiobooks.
It's definitely a very character driven & slow paced series. I read them so long ago, I doubt I'd be able to get into them today! But the characters have stayed with me!
Mitford is a cozy read. Similar to the series "Doc Martin." It's a place you visit when you want to hang with the characters. But not meant to be compelling. It is a series you can pick up once a year and continue or revisit. But perhaps not a "Krista" book/series. I have read the 1st. And hope to squeeze in #2 for Series September.
I agree it is cozy and comforting. I just need a bit more to compel me in my reading. I may someday want to read more in the series, but the library will have it ready for me. They don't need to wait on my shelves.
My mother in law loved the Mitford series! I read the first two or three and liked them ok but the cozy read is not my fave. I think I enjoyed them mainly because it was a fun connection with Lillian (MIL). Sadly she has passed away.
I don't mind a cozy read, but I want a little bit more driving action. This was a bit too slow for me. I love that it was a way you could connect with your MIL.
I found your channel because I just finished At Home in Mitford and was looking for reviews. I loved it -- but it took numerous tries over the past 30 years for it to finally click with me. I think it's because I am now Father Tim's age?!?!?!? 😆😆🤣🤣 Thanks for the review and I look forward to checking out more of your videos!
I agree💯% My mom loves it and has the entire series. She asked me to read them, so I read the first one and don't plan to continue. It's been awhile, but I think I gave it three stars.
So glad you finally got to it! Your thoughts are what I felt when I first read it but my Nana loved the series and when I got older and needed a cozy bedtime read I enjoyed them for that much better....translation....they were good to get me to sleep. :) I do love many of the characters though.
I read a few of books in the series years ago, I have been wondering if I would enjoy them if I read them now. Did the licking dog have sound effects in the audiobook? I didn't remember there was even a dog in the books :P
Like you, everyone kept telling me I would LOVE this series, so I finally read it earlier this year. I think I gave it 4 stars because I did love all of the characters and the sense of community, but nothing really happens, so I have a suspicion that this is more of a setup for the rest of the series because people who keep with it love it so much. I'm going to try the next one, but I must say, I have it on my Series September list and I'm not that excited to pick it up lol.
I'll be looking for your review of the next one then. I just don't feel any need to continue. It was a lovely group of characters in this community, but there wasn't enough story to make me care much at all.
Read that book& others awhile ago & liked it but looming @ that series now as I've picked up a book more recently & don't think I'd want to re-read series again☺📚
I am a big fan of the series (despite not loving dogs at all), and I just finished book 11 as my first read from my Series September TBR. I am someone who doesn't care whether a book has much plot, so for me just hanging out with the characters for 400 pages in this first book was a five-star experience, but I know not every reader likes that. I think it's good that you tried it, but it also makes sense to me that you wouldn't want to continue.
I didn't realize there were so many! I only have 6 of them. You are the perfect kind of reader for these books then. The characters are definitely the best part.
I read the first books in this series years ago and fell in love with them. But with that, after awhile I got away from them and the last few books in the series I never read. I have fond memories of the books I read and my time reading them and may one day reread them. I laughed at your description of the dog😂. I’m not surprised though at your reaction to them. 💕
I read most of the series over 15 years ago. Loved them at the time but I don't think I would enjoy them now. I think I would be bored with the slow, slice of life that the series is. I have considered unhauling al the books l have (Goodreads says there are 14! primary works and 23 😳 in the series. I appreciate hearing a recent review to help with my decision.
All I can say is that I am sending you my thoughts and prayers and wishing you all the best hopefully you get better soon love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
I read most books on audio these days but this one I couldn’t stand the audiobook… you have to read the actual book. I cherish this series… it’s one of my favs
I really liked the idea of the Mitford series and I really wanted to like it. I knew it would be sweet, cozy with lovely people and, best of all, I didn't have to worry about how clean it would be. But, for some reason, it really didn't click with me and I don't even think I finished the first book....which is very unusual for me. I think it was just too slow for me. Perhaps in further books more would happen and if I kept reading perhaps I would get more invested in the characters' lives...but it was taking too long for me to get there for me to believe it would happen.
I think that's what happens. As the series goes on the reader cares more and more about the characters. They are lovely characters, but I'm with you. I need a bit more to keep me reading than a lovely character. It was nice to not have to worry about language or other graphic content.
I agree with you 100%! I finished it but I was so bored. I kept waiting for something to happen! While listening to your thoughts about the characters I couldn’t even remember any details! Totally forgettable IMO 😄
I was hoping it would be building up to something, but nope. Just more of the same at the end. I don't feel bad about just reading this first one and passing along the rest of the ones I have.
I found the book kind of boring too. I didn't mind the dog parts, it was just a slow read. I stopped and started reading it three times before the fourth time when I stuck with it. I went on to read more books in the series and I can say this, the characters grew in my heart and I cared more and more about them as I continued. I don't know if that would be true for you but maybe it could be.
It probably would happen, but at this point I have way too many other books that I am more interested in reading. This was nice, but not something I'll hold on to.
Glad you read Mitford. Sorry you didn’t love it. I’m going to reread the series. I have book 1 and will be picking up the rest of the series. Pango here I come😂😂
I loved it twenty years ago (or so) and now I wonder if I'd still love it or not. Hmmm... And I kind of suspected it might not be an amazing book for you. It didn't scream "Krista!" to me, but I didn't think you'd hate it. And ugh. Licking dogs. We have a dog that will lick all day long if you'll let him, and I HATE that, too. I'd forgotten about the dog in this one completely.
I don't think the dog is that intregal to the story, but it was enough that it stood out to me. I think the characters are definitely the highlight of this book, but there wasn't enough story to make me want to keep going with the series.
Haven't read it yet, but thank you for identifying the licking dog. I can't stand that, I think it is grossly gross and it really turns me off in real life, and I sure don't want it in my book. So I think I will pick up another nondog cosy. Thank You
The dog isn't really a major part of the book, but the licking happened so close to the beginning that it immediately soured me to reading it. Not fun. There are other reasons to give this one a try though. The characters are really lovely. The main character is a gem. It was quirky and cozy.
Yea.. I wasn't a fan either.. it was fine and while I could enjoy my time w/ the characters I don't love how each chapter felt like a story and they weren't all that connected together other than time passing. I could see myself liking it more as a TV series since each one is more stand alone if that makes any sense. But truthfully just found it a bit boring. I am glad so many like the series though!
Love your vlogs but I felt bad for you in this one…DNF’d Mitford years ago. I was just totally bored. And I love dogs, but not even the pup could keep me engaged. Not a popular opinion…but I was right there with you 😟
Has Lacey showed up yet? Oh my Dooley’s siblings read like orphans. Please don’t stop!! There are some bad characters in subsequent books. Father Tim orchestrates the coming together of siblings. The rescue of one is such a good story. So sorry you didn’t love it. 💔
I don't think Lacey was one of the characters. I don't remember already. I didn't know Dooley had siblings. I may someday pick up another, but not anytime soon. And I'll have to get it from the library if I do because I'm for sure unhauling the ones I have. I love how much you love it though.
The Mitford books left an incredibly warm impression on my heart & always will. I loved stepping into Mitford & getting to know all those characters. Every book isn’t for everyone, no shame in that at all. ❤

Lol somehow I’m not surprised at your assessment.
Ha. Yeah, I wish it were different, but I feel about this one exactly how I feel about Cranford. They're very similar in my mind.
I tried to read the first one twice and DNF both times. I couldn't get past the dog 😂
Glad I'm not alone in that! It was so gross! haha.
Keep the Christmas in Mitford book and read it in November/ December then unhaul the books.
I don't have the Christmas one. But that is one I would be willing to read.
I think I told you that I never read any Series of books. I did this though.
ahhhh so there's one series you've read.
Glad you read Mitford. Sorry you didn’t love it. I’m going to reread the series. I have book 1 and will be picking up the rest of the series. Pango here I come😂😂
Yay for Pango. If you wait just a bit mine will all be on there! haha.
I love that series
So many people do.
Mitford series long time ago!
Fun!
The only one of series I didn't enjoy was the last one. But, it's a lovely series
Lovely is a good word for it.
I haven't read this one. I like cozy books IF they fall 300 pages or less. "Cozy" goes a long way in a book!
I think I may have liked this better or had more tolerance for it if it was shorter. It was much too long in my opinion.
I don't like licking dogs either. I still loved the books.
Right?! haha. Gross.
I don't feel any urge to keep reading, but I would also be interested in a tv series.
Not a dog fan in part because of the kicking thing.
I hear ya.
Love your vlogs but I felt bad for you in this one…DNF’d Mitford years ago. I was just totally bored. And I love dogs, but not even the pup could keep me engaged. Not a popular opinion…but I was right there with you 😟
Yeah, I had a feeling this would be my reaction. It was cozy and had good parts, but overall I just didn't care.
I read a few of these and was just bored with all of them
Yeah, I can appreciate how other people love them, but I am ok saying one and done.
I couldn’t ever get into it. There wasn’t enough to keep my attention.
I can see that. I did like some of the characters, but it was pretty slow.
Nothing wrong about love from a dog. I feel sorry for you that you don’t know the love and joy of dogs :(
There's nothing wrong with it at all. It's just not for me.
You're better than I. I have never even felt the need to pick up the Mitford series. And after your description of the dog, I have even less interest.
It's quaint and cozy, but slow and very character driven too. So...maybe it will be what you need some day.
The dog becomes a lesser part of the story
Even in the first one he becomes more minor, but it stood out to me because it was so gross at the beginning. Put a bad taste in my mouth right away.
It’s too bad you didn’t enjoy this series. Maybe it’s just an age thing lol.
Haha. Maybe?!?
