They cannot force or intimidate people to go through red lights. They have to turn their sirens off and wait, blue light drivers know this and so this person should be reprimanded. If you drove through the red light causing an accident, you would not be covered and you couldn't claim from the police either.
As a Canadian, That’s insane to hear you aren’t supposed to go through red lights when blocking an emergency vehicle in the UK. Here, people do whatever means necessary to move out of the way (most of the time)
It’s also crazy how nobody moved to one side to make room (in Canada it’s typically you pull over to the right but idk if it’s the same in other places) tbf though I’ve seen Toronto drivers also block them though :/
In germany you get two points, 240 euro fine and lose your drivers license for one month if you dont make room for emergency services. And that includes going over a red light to do so.
Unless directed by officer in uniform, ie they need to get off their ass and out of car to direct you, beeping doesn't count, but someone above said the law has changed recently, I haven't heard of it, so I'm dubious.
As a former blue light driver while i don't want to criticise, it really isn't good driving, its yr job to find a clear path, not push through regardless, two tones are all over the place, and probably very confusing for the public
Was the donut shop closing? A police driver on blues and twos killed a motorcyclist by travelling against traffic for a non emergancy ie he was near end of shift and I've watch 2 motorcycle cops travel over 60 mph on a 40 mph road just to pull into aston police station not on a call no blues/ twos
Councils could make combined bike/bus/taxi and emergency service lanes, but prefer to pave over lanes and introduce restrictions to hamper emergency vehicles.
That may be the law in the UK. In Germany it is perfectly acceptable and even taught in driving schools that you should proceed over a red light if that's needed to make way for an emergency vehicle.
Just to clarify some points for you all.... Nobody FORCED anyone to do anything in this clip. When most people see or hear the emergency services they don't react, they panic and they leave it until the last second to make a decision, but that says more about their driving than the emergency services. In this clip, the emergency response driver COULD have cut his siren, but chose not to. This isn't necessarily bad practice. The fact that he chose not to cut his siren wouldn't have caused a problem for his colleagues, mentors or assessors that actually understand the job. Emergency response drivers (ambulance, fire or police) have to justify all use of the emergency mode. We cannot put the "blues and twos" on without good reason. The comments left by @blueskies666 regarding "an imaginary person dying" or the "fake person that doesn't exist" is really disturbing. Not all emergencies are life threatening or time critical but that's for the emergency services to decide, not Joe Public. If we're honest, all of us could look at the last time we drove and say there were things we could have done differently in hindsight because we're all human and nobody's perfect. Emergency response drivers have to make difficult decisions on the spot and under pressure, whereas the people commenting here have had the privilege of seeing the clip more than once and thinking about their opinion before they respond. We don't have that option in an emergency. Ambulance services do not want people to go ahead of a red light but we are grateful when you help us out and let us through. You might like to know that it's actually an offence to purposely obstruct the emergency services. If they've got time to make a note of your registration number, you could get reported and fined anyway, so it's best to do the right thing and move if you can. Either way, some people are easily triggered and have large egos and they find it very easy to criticise emergency response drivers who are trying to do a difficult job that these people wouldn't even have the stomach for.
Never break the law ova Emergancy!.. As a nurse once said to me "If someone is dying, dont run, dont panic, because if you do, then someone can get injured and make you liable..

They should have waited for the light to turn green before getting out the way. Emergency vehicles shouldn’t be putting pressure on drivers to break the law.
I went through a red light a few years ago in London to let an ambulance through and got a fine in the post. I ignored the letter and never opened any of the following ones.
Its crazy that for all of you it is normal that the police car has to turn off the sirens and wait for the green light. Here in germany you don't get a fine for running the red light, you will get a fine if you don't run it because you are blocking an emergency vehicle.
Nones running a red light for you officer.. Why not? Because you put cameras on them and I pay a fecking fine if I go forward. The council don’t care if your trying to get through so you go when I go.
That 999 driver broke the law by pushing throu cars at a red light with sirens on. If you are the cars at the red lights never go throu the red lights to allow the 999 driver throu else you get points and a fine
Can I use this video as a demonstration of not how to drive while using blue lights. Firstly at the start of the video the driver starts to move into lane 2, which the silver van saw by indicating left and then started to move over, when the silver van had started to move the emergency vehicle changed their mind and went back into lane 1 which may have led to confusion for the grey van. Secondly the emergency driver should have held back at the lights and muted his tones, what they did there was dangerous as they pressured members of the public to contravene a red ATC.
As I’ve read the comments I stumbled across some who for me as German EMS worker are hard to understand: Is it correct that in the UK a driver isn’t allowed to pass a red light to make way for emergency vehicles who are using lights and siren?!
Yes, you can get ticketed for going through a red light. The car should have turned the siren off as if not people end up going through, as shown in the video. You can probably get the ticket revoked in this case as the police sat with the sirens on, so it might have been a really urgent call.
@@Matty27 Thank you for your response. So, the normal procedure would be: Turn of the siren, wait until the light is green and then turn back on the sirens and continue? Does that apply for all emergency response vehicles like ambulances as well? I am so confused because time is of the essence when responding. Here in Germany, when I approach an intersection the cars slowly and carefully drive over the red light and make way. Without having the risk of getting a ticket.
@freddymorel9076 Rule 219 of the British Highway Code isn't legally binding in and of itself. However, all rules of the Highway Code do have support from existing legislation.
In my country no one EVER open the road for emergencies. We have been assured by the government many times that we won't be fined but we don't trust the government.
Never drive through red lights, onto kerbs/pavements/central reservations, bus lanes, cycle lanes, hard shoulders, or other driving offences to make way for emergency vehicles. Only ever do so when directly instructed by a police officer. Drivers always lose court cases when claiming they were getting out of the way. Further to comments from op, proper emergency vehicles procedure for the first red traffic lights is for the emergency driver to continue with the blue lights but to cut the siren and definitely NOT use the horn. Emergency drivers can choose to drive through bus lanes etc but regular road users must not.
Those motorists can still be ticketed and penalised for jumping a red light. I would not and if PLOD has to wait then they need to change the law first. Eff 'em.
My husband is a PC and he's just done his blue lights, you are not allowed to forge anyone through a red light, you have to stop the sirens until light changes
This is how not to drive on a blue call. If cars are stuck at red lights. You turn your sirens off until they can move. Bullying them into driving through a red is abhorrent
Why? If there is an emergency that's more important. Here in Germany you would get fined 240 euros and get two points and lose your driver's license for a month if you don't move out of the way, and this includes going through red.

If you do cross the stop line at the junction whilst the lights are on red, you will commit the offence of contravening a red traffic light. It's important to remember that in committing the offence (crossing the stop line) the onus will be on you to provide evidence that you did so to allow an emergency vehicle through. That may be considered as mitigation, but there is no guarantee that it will be. If the police decide to prosecute you for the offence and you choose to challenge that decision, it will ultimately be a matter for a court to decide. Its interesting how people or laws put "running" a red light over potentially saving lives. Here in germany you can legally move forward on red lights to make space for emergency vehicles. I thought this was common sense but apparently its not
Emergency services know that they cant force traffic through a red light and are supposed to turn the siren off if theyre stationary for a while, keep the lights on but turn the twos off as its illegal for traffic to run a red light. In fact theres a growing theory that our cash orientated police may be instigating such circumstances to create a bit of extra revenue, much like when they get upset about people informing others of speed cameras, we're helping reduce the speed of traffic, theyre just pissed coz they dont hear the ka-ching sound. Obviously if u dont move and one of the officers gets out and asks u to move, get them to repeat it into the voice recorder on ur mobile with their name and number.
One question, if the police or an ambulance is flashing their lights and or using their siren, am i allowed to break the law to make room for them? Like drive to somewhere i shouldnt? I dont have my drivers license yet so forgive me if its a stupid question 😅
Because the emergency services car is poorly trained, and pressured them to go through the light when they’re not supposed to. There was nowhere to go so nobody was going
The law for red lights should be changed: either an exemption for emergencies, or, my preference is, unless other indicated, drivers should be allowed to pass a red after coming to a compete stop if safe to do so.
When you drive in Europe, we stay to the left or right of lanes when stuck in traffic or at traffic lights for such reasons as this. But when I return to England, you get this malarkey. People are ignorant and clueless.
Under any circumstances a vehicle stopped at the red light may not legally go beyond that red light, the emergency has to wait. If a stopped vehicle does go past the red light because of the emergency vehicle, the driver is liable to prosecution
See, if both lanes just moved to the side without actually going through the red the ambulance can pass without anyone getting a ticket. "But i had to go through" no, you had to move to the side.
In the UK you get a nasty fine and possibly some points for moving on a red light, regardless if it is an emergency vehicle. .. In Germany you are supposed to run over red lights to make space for police and other emergencies.
Why does that make these comments wild?
@@josephbenson606cause people are assuming all systems are stupid like the american one and would fine people for running the red light but that wouldn't happen in Germany
@@ent.8979Wdym "american one"? Nobody is talking about america here
This is NOT Germany, this is the UK. We have different Laws, we use English Law in England and Wales.
They cannot force or intimidate people to go through red lights. They have to turn their sirens off and wait, blue light drivers know this and so this person should be reprimanded. If you drove through the red light causing an accident, you would not be covered and you couldn't claim from the police either.
Unfortunately your talking out of your backside
As a Canadian, That’s insane to hear you aren’t supposed to go through red lights when blocking an emergency vehicle in the UK. Here, people do whatever means necessary to move out of the way (most of the time)
Most of us do, but Brampton drivers unfortunately dont understand that
With our narrow and congested roads there is usually nowhere to go without breaking the law.
IMO, the emergency vehicle should have seen or anticipated traffic at the lights and used the other side of the road
It’s also crazy how nobody moved to one side to make room (in Canada it’s typically you pull over to the right but idk if it’s the same in other places) tbf though I’ve seen Toronto drivers also block them though :/
The opposite side of the road was clear. Thats where the blue lights should be.

In germany you get two points, 240 euro fine and lose your drivers license for one month if you dont make room for emergency services. And that includes going over a red light to do so.
In the UK, for some reason you will indeed be ticketed for passing the stop line to save somebodies life.
Nice to see people trying to give as much space as possible.
I’d become a cop if it weren’t for the stupid amount of red tape they have to endure.
You are not allowed to go through a red light, even if there is a blue light behind you, if you have or cause an accident you are at fault.
Unless directed by officer in uniform, ie they need to get off their ass and out of car to direct you, beeping doesn't count, but someone above said the law has changed recently, I haven't heard of it, so I'm dubious.
In Canada you are allowed to, but it only if it safe to do so.
On his way to an edgy facebook post.
They really should make lanes on the road that’s for emergency personnel only.
They did - called hard shoulders. The government decided it would be smart to turn them into live lanes.
Councils could make combined bike/bus/taxi and emergency service lanes, but prefer to pave over lanes and introduce restrictions to hamper emergency vehicles.
Never go through a red light.. no matter what.
That may be the law in the UK. In Germany it is perfectly acceptable and even taught in driving schools that you should proceed over a red light if that's needed to make way for an emergency vehicle.
@Lucas-zg1vz uk its a no, get a fine it's that simple.
What's your explanation for the horn being sounded?
@@dennisbundy3042 the horn changes the siren tone
One of the major causes of law-enforcement demise is car accidents when they’re not wearing a seatbelt.
Never break the law ova Emergancy!.. As a nurse once said to me "If someone is dying, dont run, dont panic, because if you do, then someone can get injured and make you liable..
Here in Canada the cars break check emergency responders who ride too close.
& this is why I always pull as far to the right/left (left lane, to the left, etc) as possible in traffic, it’s annoying it isn’t more common practice in the UK
They should have waited for the light to turn green before getting out the way.
Emergency vehicles shouldn’t be putting pressure on drivers to break the law.
They must really want their Big Macs that day...
Traffic cop earning his bonus by making 4 cars go through a red to receive a ticket 😂
I went through a red light a few years ago in London to let an ambulance through and got a fine in the post. I ignored the letter and never opened any of the following ones.
I dont care how important your emergency is, im not running a red light and getting fined for anyone
Sirens are meant to be off at red lights and the driver should hang back. Basic emergency response raining.
100% police had to go for donuts.

One law that needs to be changed. You have to be legally allowed to move through red lights to make room for emergency vehicles.
When you have to get to McDonalds before the 11am breakfast cut off time.
Never go thru a red light cause you get a ticket
More importantly is that you will be liable and at fault if a crash occurs. Might not even get anything from your insurance, since it was your fault..

It is illegal to go through a red light regardless of police, fire or ambulance!
DO NOT JUMP A RED LIGHT!
Those reduced Krispy Kreams aren’t going to eat themselves
Ok after some research I found the Highway Code Rule 219, which has answered all my questions 😅👍🏻
@freddymorel9076 Rule 219 of the British Highway Code isn't legally binding in and of itself. However, all rules of the Highway Code do have support from existing legislation.
Someone’s late for their lunch break 🤔😂
Never ever run a red light. Emergency vehicle should have gone into opposite lane if they was in such a rush.
As an American this is WILD
Turns the corner just stop oil are waiting….
In my country no one EVER open the road for emergencies. We have been assured by the government many times that we won't be fined but we don't trust the government.
Why did you force them through the red lights that isn't allowed! I never move through reds even with pressure I only move after the lights change.
Eff 'em.
You're gay
No they can't.
If you go through a red light or speed due to an emergency vehicle do you get fined
My husband is a PC and he's just done his blue lights, you are not allowed to forge anyone through a red light, you have to stop the sirens until light changes
Thats the most urgent driving ive ever seen
Ummm, not how i was trained. Should not force traffic to move at red lights
@@Leon78536 because your opinion in the UK is irrelevant. Because you can get fined for driving through a red light even to move out the way for emergency services. Because it’s stated they shouldn’t sit there with sirens on when it’s not possible for them to move.
The law that you can't go through a red for an emergency vehicle responding in the UK has always annoyed me, as I'm pretty sure in the US you can go through a red for an emergency vehicle

Never go through a red light. You will be done. They're suppose to turn off the sirens when stopped at lights so they DON'T force drivers to go through them.

@drcl7429 Doesn't matter, no mitigating circumstances, if you go through on red as the driver it is seen as your responsibility. That is why emergency vehicle drivers are to turn off sirens and wait (no matter what the emergency). THAT IS FACT.
@@bartbishop4460I managed to successfully appeal in magistrates court (without representation) after being caught by a camera going through a red to allow an unmarked Police BMW to get through using section 35 as my defence. “Police riders exercising the exemption to pass a red traffic light must avoid causing a member of the public to contravene the red light” from Motorcycle Roadcraft, chapter 12 p263 , though I see it happening far too often
Good use of the horn except when he needed it most was at the green set of traffic lights where the car just stopped instead of moving
Needs reprimanding for bullying traffic at red lights
Going through a red light is an absolute offence but can be argued in mitigation. The best outcome would be an absolute discharge.
The Police should be prosecuted as they intimidated the car drivers by not turning their siren off.
Shut up 🤡
…what?
Ah yes the police should of turnd the emergency off called up the house and said "Hey could you not stab the guy, we're stuck in traffic"
Brilliant mind you have there.
I wonder why no one else thought of that.
Soit is ILLEGAL to allow the police thro uf you have to pass a red light.
@@200doubleyou5the dangerous actions of the response driver could have caused the run to be cancelled as they could have caused an accident whilst on route to the first call out. The standard of driving shown in this video is shocking and if they drive like this while knowing they are on camera I worry as to their standard of driving while not being filmed. If this was someone that I was supervising I wouldn't hesitate to pull their driving ticket.
Its interesting how people or laws put "running" a red light over potentially saving lives. Here in germany you can legally move forward on red lights to make space for emergency vehicles. I thought this was common sense but apparently its not
Thank god I don't live in the UK and we can use common sence such as partially crawling through a red to give way to an emergency vehicle

In the UK you get a nasty fine and possibly some points for moving on a red light, regardless if it is an emergency vehicle. .. Unfortunately, there will be more people that will not move and rightly so, shame for the emergency services that need to rush 😢 I do not move at all. No one will pay my fine and the hustle to contest it is not worth it

This is how emergency response drivers are taught in the UK. Try not to criticise people that are trying to do a tough job the best they can. Most people haven't got the stomach for it.) Sorry Steve I will be critical of poor driving standards regardless of if they are from a responding emergency service vehicle or not. Service are being trained to in fact kill the sirens when there is no clear way to proceed to prevent the public being bullied into making illegal maneuvers. (Three of the cars in this video broke rule 219 in this video.) Also at least one Blue Light Driver has said such on this topic here.
