This is one of my favorite movies i just love it. Gena was good but Kathleen was great a lot of people agree. She should gave won an oscar for this movie. Also the sountrack is magic. Thanks.
She really got hosed. I'm not sure how Geena Davis got a supporting Actress nomination when her role was pretty much a starring role. Davis should've received a Best Actress nomination and Turner Best Supporting Actress. It may have had something to do with the billing but still!
@bj wood Absolutely she did. The line between supporting and starring is really blurred sometimes. Don't get me wrong, Davis was certainly outstanding but Turner was equally wonderful. She's absolutely mesmerizing in these scenes and I think having given birth four weeks prior to filming really saw this hitting home for her. There are some real amazing scenes in the deleted scenes which further delve into Sarah's turmoil. This discussion was actually divided into two scenes; with part happening later in the film with Sarah meeting Macon after he injures himself and her wanting to know why he didn't call her. Also, with Sarah expressing her grief more deeply, desiring to go to the prison, meet her son's killer and shooting him.
@bj wood I will post it here if I find. Truly an under appreciated movie. Turner has constantly expressed surprise that despite all the awards and accolades, it's not cited more often as a deep exploration of grief, multi-layered performances and brilliant character exploration.
@@lilchicklets I would gladly have paid to to see this exact same movie with Geena Davis playing strait laced Sarah and Kathleen Turner playing off beat, optimistic Muriel. They both are wonderful and at the top of their games when this movie was made.
@UCLuQjatFBHaMiGdelwoLwOA Absolutely. Kathleen Turner proved she could play any kind of woman well going from Matty Walker to Delores Benedict to Joan Wilder to Irene Walker to Peggy Sue Bodel. Both women would've played either role extremely well. Funny enough if you youtube Bobby Wygant 1988 Kathleen Turner Accidental Tourist interview, she indicates she initially wanted the role of Muriel but Larry insisted she play Sarah.
It's amazing to see the layers of complex dialogue and great acting. She basically admitted that she had suicidal thoughts and his response, "....it's true what you say about human beings." Wow. So powerful and so sad how they grieved at the same time yet so differently. His was buried as her grief consumed her.
Anyone who reads the book knows that Sarah completely misunderstood Macon. His almost obsessive connection to Edward (the dog) is his way of holding onto something of Ethan's. Sarah may understand how she feels but she also projects how she thinks Macon feels and then blames him for what she thinks are his feelings. FWIW The armchair logo WASN'T Macon's; it was Julian's design.
Looking at Kathleen Turner during her most productive Hollywood years I am still convinced she's the ONE who can play Lauren Bacall should they ever decide to do a biopic on her. Kathleen has the sophistication and that incredible VOICE who can do Bacall justice. But Kathleen now is about 50 pounds overweight, but with some determination and exercise there's nothing that a treadmill won't do. If I were Kathleen, I'd pitch myself as a candidate to bring Lauren Bacall's story to the Hollywood screen. It'll also be a career capper for Kathleen as well.
Nah! Their son dying broke her. That's my interpretation anyway. Things were not perfect before but it was ok to good. That event tipped the scales to the scene we see.
