The contrast in Tim's notes is mostly due to technique. In the Sing Off, Tim uses growl to hit the note but in the Album version he uses chest fry. Chest fry sounds much closer to your usual low singing voice so even though its the same pitch (I'm pretty sure) it sounds less supernatural, the latter of which would better appeal to a crowd and TV audience. Because he uses chest fry in the album version and he has more backing vocals with him, it sounds more integrated into the song rather than just 'look how low our bass can sing!' (mostly because at this point we all already know how low Tim can sing 😂)

There was one main goal in their performance of this on the Sing-Off. In her comments on their previous performance, Jewel complimented Austin on his high notes, but said she thought he "shied away from them." Then she said that she really wanted to see him go for them. So that's what it was all about. Austin hitting as many high notes as possible and that made it sort of frenetic.

I do agree that Home Free played to their strengths, as well as playing to the audience while on the Sing-Off. HF was the only group capitalizing on the skills of their bass singer (especially since they had Tim), plus you get boyish enthusiasm and great singing from Austin. Love the new version as well, Rob is great in the lead. It does feel less frantic but just as upbeat as their first one. Don't think we've seen Rob without his glasses since What We Ain't Got. Congrats on the 10k, btw!

Thanks for doing both versions. This is such a fun remake of this song. Rob & Austin were great as the leads & of course the other guys added their special touches in the background. The guys all had such funny grumpy faces, especially Tim. Like how it started in black & white & then shifted to color when they put on the glasses. I noticed they had the same girl & guy who were the fire dancers in "Playing With Fire" in the background as extras.

The Sing Off was good, but I like the new version better.
I want crazy? I don't need glasses for that, just Home Free is enough. This sounds great again!! How nice is that it has become a completely different version than the Sing Off, with Rob (and Austin) in the lead. The video was so much fun too. The first somewhat grumpy faces that completely brighten up. And how beautiful that red suit looks on Rob and later without glasses. 😍What a handsome cuddly bear 🥰. And hey, we don't really need to talk about the background vocals, harmony, bass and beatboxing because they are, as always, so incredibly good. Yes, again the biggest compliments to Home Free. Excellent💖

Something to remember about the show, they had to choose, arrange, and learn at least three new songs each week. They were also assigned a “theme” for each week which limited their choices (also songs that were copyright approved). Honestly, I loved the show version because of the heart and passion in the delivery. But, as you know, they are always awesome!

I can hardly wait for the new version of I'm Alright to come out. The collab they did with Filharmonic on The Sing-Off was so much fun it carrier both groups through to the next round, when the intention was to winnow out one of the groups. They again collaborated with Filharmonic and with the upgrades they have been doing, it should be epic. If you have not seen it, I recommend you see the movie Caddyshack before watching the performances (the song was part of the soundtrack, but let's just say there is more reason than just that to watch the movie first).

This competition was ten years ago, so they're bound to sound at least a bit different; plus in the new version Rob takes over some of the sections that Tim and Austin did for the Sing Off. I can't remember for certain, but I'm pretty sure that they had a time limit for their Sing Off performances, but I can't remember what it was.

The show also wanted them to do another country song (they weren't exclusively country until the sing off producers asked them to be) so they picked a popish country song they had a day to arrange it. Also, it's a fast song anyway.
Hunter Hayes is a frantic guy. Always hyper. It shows in this song. He wrote the song, played all the instruments, produce it all by himself. He was maybe 21 or 22 at the time.

Agree with your assessment, in hearing them again their Sing Off versions all seemed somewhat rushed. I love the more mature versions of each (so far) of their 10th anniversary renditions/upgrades. I also like that the runs aren’t nearly so frequent/forced - the show versions seemed to be focused on “get in as many runs and super-low notes as possible to “wow” the audience” - likely something the producers may have pushed vs. we can do it but we don’t have to do it at every possible opportunity.

You have a good ear. They did slow it down just a little bit. I don't think it was much, but it was enough to make the difference. Tim is, I believe, hitting the same note. He is just hitting it in a more "normal" way so that it "blends" and sounds like it firs instead of sounding like he is "showing off" to get the crowd cheering for them. They knew what the people wanted, and they gave it to them. They still do. They are just that good. Another banger!!!!!

Austin had lost his voice that last week from the pressure the producers were putting them under. It wasn't just the competition songs, but they wanted Austin front and center in the ensemble songs and that week they also had to do a duet with Jewel. He was whistling during rehearsals to try to protect his voice. I can't imagine the pressure he was under that night to get those notes out.
I would have said that the Sing Off one was faster - it certainly seemed more frenetic, but I finally got out a BPM meter and discovered that they were virtually the same, maybe 1 - 1 1/2 beats slower in the new version (104 vs 105/106).

I find all of the Sing-off versions too frenetic. Obviously because of the time constraints. I do love this version. Such a bop. Must be really the mixing or maybe Austin was more nervous back then. Often times if you are confident in what you are doing and also pronounce very clearly, the lyrics can be understood way better that if you are a bit nervous and stumble your words a bit.

I've been noticing when I let RUclips go on it's merry little algorithmic way after I choose a Home Free or a Voice Play or a Bass Gang or a Pentatonix song that there are certain numbers, mostly the live recordings, where the sound becomes too hectic for the vibe my family, especially with new and shy turtles. The second number, possibly due to the studio mixing, is so much more enjoyable.

I think at this point in the competition the producers realized they underestimated just how good Voiceplay really was & made some bad decisions on how they wanted Home Free do the songs they chose . I honestly yjong that if HF didn't take Ben Brams suggestion to just be yourself & do the song the way you feel is best they might have lost the competition to Voiceplay. ( who came in 2nd place)

Voiceplay did not come in second. The group Ten did. Voiceplay got voted off when each of the final six had to do a battle with another group (HF vs Filharmonic - neither group went home). Voiceplay was one of the 2 groups that went home that night, which left the final four of HF, Vocal Rush, Ten and Filharmonic.
