Well he's just so funny he growls at the little boy and he's got his tail wagon the entire time and if he was really upset at the little boy and it was going to go after him the hair would be standing up on the back of his head there on his shoulders and that's not the case and his tails wagon the whole time he's growling at the little boy. @@cynthiafeng8439 Christine is right. Tail wagging and lowered ear in this case go along with the growl as a "calming signal" within the warning.
Translated: "Look, puppy, I don't mean harm (tail wag), but you're making me nervous (lowered ears, eye contact), you are not allowed (growl, protective stance, fangs bared) to come any closer to my food. Otherwise, I will snap. So be reasonable (again, tail wag) and go back to safe distance, but if you press this, I will fight "(again, growl).
Of course, it's part of teaching, but it's an important lesson that Shiro needs make sure his potats get - because dogs will protect their food, and to try and approach when eating could trigger an aggressive reaction. Daddo makes a big scary "show" so the pups will be intimidated from ever doing it again to other dogs.
To us, the concept of learning through punishment may seem cruel - but it's literally how nature ha taught animals all over the story of their existence. "Don't break the rules, or bad things happen"

Yeah, we found out the hard way when my sister & her Shiba got attacked by a Pitt Bull. Her ears were totally erect, & the tail wagging, & she went in for the attack. My sister ended up getting surgery on her knee from the Pitt knocking her down & she twisted to protect Jaida.
The screaming & the attack was very scary.
But that's how we found out about the tail wagging.
Sometimes they give mixed signals.
Instead of making him behave and respect the pups you are letting him run the show. Ridiculous
