It was intended for scouting and skirmishing with pill boxes being about the biggest things they could handle. It sort of harked back to the idea of the cavalry tank but it did good infantry support work.
It was the best light tank of the war by a considerable distance & could take on any other tank of similar size. Unlike rivals, its main gun could fire smoke, buckshot, HE & AP ammo plus it had 3 very reliable machine guns. It had an excellent radio, was also highly manouverable, easy to drive & maintain, & spares were plentiful. My uncle fought in tanks through North Africa up into Italy & the M3 was his favourite by far. I agree it was not designed to take on a tiger but the fact Ingram even tried shows the faith he & his crew had in their machine.
And he survived to tell the tale. That’s the point of the Sherman. I find this unlikely, however, as the majority of Tigers on the western front were destroyed by bombardment by air and land. There are only four confirmed Sherman run-ins with Tigers until the Battle of the Bulge. Your grandfather would have either run into an extremely lucky Panzer 4 or a concealed Panther, unless he ran into a Tiger 2 in the Battle of the Bulge. Even then, it’s likely it was a Panther or a Panzer, due to how frequent breakdowns and fuel draining was.
@@fidelski2019 unfortunately i don't know much about my great grandfathers, they were british indians & were born due to some affair which ended in disowning. They died semi young after war & much of their past has been suppressed & forgotten to save face of some influential family or something. One thing i can say for sure that it was quiet easy to mistake german tanks & the tank that attacked them was concealed very well & was likely damaged or was being used as a rear guard.
A little fun fact: the USMC ordered the M3 before the start of the Pacific campaign but wasn't able to get them on time so they used the M2A4 at Guadalcanal. This would be the one and only time the M2 light tank would see combat.
Great video as always Also i want to say Thank you for getting me 100+ on History class thanks for teaching us about the technology, weapons, life in the trenches and history on wars
The British named the M3 "General Stuart" upon receipt of the tank under the Lend-Lease program in June of 1941 (Alongside with other vehicles such as a year later the Sherman). The tank's ability to "shoot and scoot" as well as keeping the crew safe from small fire arms fire, earned an affectionae nickname of "Honey" by its operators. Swift and powerful like a bee. What do bees make? Honey
First combat for the M3 Stuart was December 1941 in tank vs tank battles against the Japanese, long before the British used them in North Africa. the original M3 had 5 machineguns, as seen in the image at 0:19.
I love how there are so many little accurate details, such as the correct rifles for different nationalities, in the animation. your animator/animators must really know their stuff!
The stuart and the sherman were actually pretty good tanks for their roles, and they were well made. Both were fast, had good armor, good guns, and were very reliable. They just couldn't keep up with the german monstrosities. The Italians and the Japanese though were pretty behind on armored warfare, so these tanks were great on those fronts.
This. Germans focused on armor and firepower. Problem was, this made them heavy and fuel hungry, which actually exacerbated their resource problems, forcing them to do something stupid like take on Russia for their oil fields. Also, they had to rely on railroads to transport those heavy tanks too, which made them prime targets for the pockets of resistance that sprung up in response to the German occupations. So while Germany enjoyed success on the battlefield due to their heavier tanks, it quickly drained their supplies to even do that. Yeah, King Tigers ruled whatever battlefield they were on but they were just so costly to make, and even costly to just deploy. And yet they wanted to go even bigger, like that pipe dream Ratte Mega Tank. Who knows the actual cost that would have had on Germany's resources to make and to even deploy. It would have been 1000 metric tons. Think about that. The fuel alone to even MOVE that would have Germany run out of gas even quicker.
Only M3's early production tanks had 3 Machine guns but the removed drivers browingn because it had so little to give in the battle field. The Machine gun hole was sealed but it was still regognicable in the latern m3's

you forgot to mention the extra machine guns that can be mounted in the hull facing forward but near the sides, you can see them in some of the images and on the front view you can see the circles where they would go. they removed the extra guns to make room for more crew, but a light tank having a maximum of 5 machine guns facing forward is something to note. and lets also not forget the M3 Satan tank.
DrodTM It generally was used as a SAW (Squad support weapon) but it just is a MMG (Medium machine gun), light machinegeuns are never belt fed based designs, it's a hint already
The M3 'Stuart' Light Tank was used by the Philippine Commonwealth Army & Philippine Scouts for the Filipino soldiers to fought against the Imperial Japanese troops during the Fall of Bataan & Corregidor on 1942 and still alive the Stuart Tanks for the ongoing local troops under the Commonwealth Army including the Philippine Constabulary and the recognized guerrilla units on the height for the conflicts during the Japanese Occupation and added for the Allied Liberation to helping U.S. troops from 1942 to 1945 in the Second World War.
The Philippine Army did not use the Stuarts. Those tanks were two National Guard Tank Battalions sent to defend the Philippines before the war started (192d and 194th Tank Battalions). The Philippine Scouts were very valiant soldiers, and formed the US 45th and 57th Infantry Regiments, as well as the 26th Cavalry Regiment, but did not operate the tanks. Some may have escaped being captured when the US Army surrendered and may have been used by the guerillas.

Interesting to here that the Americans liked them in the Pacific. Australia didn't like them because they were not very good in jungle conditions. But in all fairness he survived everytime due to the ease of exiting the Sherman
Was he like fighting on a motor pool? He walked to a new tank multiple times in a day without actually using smoke or infantry on a "Tiger"?
And he survived to tell the tale. That’s the point of the Sherman.
I find this unlikely, however, as the majority of Tigers on the western front were destroyed by bombardment by air and land. There are only four confirmed Sherman run-ins with Tigers until the Battle of the Bulge.
