- The BB Micro Leech takes advantage of the smaller 60 degree jig hooks that are now available. These smaller jig hooks now all tyers to easily tie a wide range of small balanced flies. Micro Leeches are a season long pattern but are especially popular early and late in the season.
So happy I found your channel! I’m going to try tying some up!!
Thank you I’m so happy I found your channel!!
Thanks so much Phil. Just discovered your balanced leech today. I have many boxes of 555 jig hooks in various sizes from 16 up to 10 that gonna get used now.
Thanks Robert, glad you enjoyed the video.
Cheers, Phil
Thanks for the tutorial, I started tying these this week and had to double check my method, bang on! I've also added a couple double eye patterns to suspend a chironomid or balanced under, hope to try them soon! Cheers!
I have the 60 degree hooks and was waiting to get some 90 degree because I saw some of your balanced flies were on 90 degree hooks. Now I don't have to wait. I bought some sequin pins and I am off. I like lake fishing much better than river fishing because I have a handicap and I can't stand in the water. I have a boat and it is old and broad beam so it is easy to walk around in and I have seating suitable for fishing. Can't wait to get onto the water again. Lord willing. Sean
+Sean Mooney Hi Sean, now that I use Daiichi hooks the 90 degree hooks come in size 8 or larger. The 60 degree hooks come in size 10 and smaller. That is now the deciding factor for me as to when I use a 60 or 90 degree hook. Glad to hear that you are off and running +Sean Mooney.
Thanks, Phil
Hi Phil, do you have any preference between the Daiichi 4640 vs 4647? Does the darker colour of the 4647 affect the effectiveness of the fly?
Hi, I use the 4640 most often simply because it's the style I have the most of. You could use the 4647 in place of it. I am not always convinced the fish see or care about the hook. Otherwise, we wouldn't have much of a sport in regards to catching a few fish. 😀
Cheers, Phil
After watching you use this fly effectively as a backswimmer pattern on the Tigers I've used this in several situations where I wouldn't have thought to use it before. Here in the East it's a brilliant Paraleps imitation in size 14-16 and hung under an indicator.
Best of the season David. That is the great thing about fly patterns. Often they perform in situations you don't always think of.
Cheers, Phil
Hi Phil: Stew here. Seems like yesterday I meet you and the San Mateo Show. For the Micro Leech What is the size/number/shaft of the Sequin Pins? Thanks for your help. You have a great site. Tight Threads, R. L. "Stew" Stewart
Hi Stew, great to hear from you. I get my sequin pins from Michael's in the stitchery section. They come in gold and silver. Here is a link to Michael's site. www.michaels.com/loops-and-threads-applique-sequin-pins/M10340868.html?dwvar_M10340868_count=800
Excellent Phil. I guess you answered my question, you can cast and retrieve the balanced patterns, but do they work the same in a stream compared to a bead on a 60° hook with out the pin application? Thanks Phil, hope you had an excellent Christmas and have a fantastic New Year! 👍
Hi Joe, they do work equally well in streams. If you weren't going to use them in a balanced application you could easily use a jig hook coupled with a slotted bead and omit the pin extension. I do this myself for a number of my river and lake patterns that are going be used in cast and retrieve or dead drift presentations. I will be featuring a jig Wooly Bugger up on my channel shortly that illustrates this.
Thanks, Phil
Hi Phil, great looking fly and you did a great job explaining how to tie it. Where can a person get the body material Brill Straggle? Thanks.
+George Brill Hi George, glad to hear you enjoyed the tying video. I get my Brill from Canadian Llama, an online fly tying materials company. Here is the direct link to their Brill page, www.canadianllama.com/brill-straggle-regualr-and-uv?zenid=0piatd46qpcqerah74mntor4t2.
Thanks, Phil
Hi Phil... This is a nice mini leech pattern, I really appreciate the way you explain the tutorials. May I ask where you get the sequin pins?.. Thanks for your videos, I look forward to them!
+Stryker 2 Hi thanks for the kind words on the video. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed it. I get the sequin pins at Michael's. They can be found in the stitchery section in either gold or silver. I use both colors depending on the tungsten bead I am using.
Thanks, Phil
+Philip Rowley Thanks Phil! :))
...cast and retrieve with a full sink line...????
Hi, you can fish this fly a couple of ways. Cast and retrieved using a strip retrieve with pauses or suspended under an indicator. For the cast and retrieve method, you can use a variety of lines including floating right through a type III or greater sink rate line. We often fish them under indicators in early spring and late fall when fish cruise the shallows.
Thanks, Phil
