As a 3d artist I noticed a cycle in entertainment. When things get bigger and more and more bombastic, people start craving smaller more personal things. I expect that we'll go through a phase of digital art gluttony, but my hope is that there will also be a big branch of art that people love because it's real & personal. The indie-games movement was a good example for this
So true I am an indi game dev making 16bit games like in the 80s you know Mario with a friend of mine it's so cool to make old school stuff with low tec
I agree. Im 21 now and me and my Friends really just reject a lot of modern things yes we use smartphones, yes we use social media but man there is no better feeling than using old tools to craft something or listen to music on vinyl and just drive old cars (maximum early 90s but mostly way earlier). Real live is so much more fulfilling than this stupid fantasy world most people these days are escaping into.
A philosopher (I don’t remember whom) once said, “reality exists only among interactions with other humans or nature; all other interactions are man made, and thus, artificial.”
Those of us who love photography are still going to take pictures. I spend hours at a time wandering around with my macro lens photographing things almost no one else notices. So keep sharing your wisdom, I’ll keep watching and taking pictures.
Hehee its another way around. AI has made itself boring and obsolete. I have not seen anything amazing and must have stuff that AI has done or cgi images. They look all the same. wery few movies are good by it selfs and cgi only is prop to make story possible to show. But saddly theres sooo many movies done only to wow ppl with cgi. Like avatar. Dummest movie ever but ppl cheer it. Story wise its crap. And comparing to like alien or 2001 or original star wars it is wery possible to make good looking movies without cgi. So if you dont appresiate natures normal beauty maybe then this is for you.
Technology advances faster than we can adapt to it and regulate it. I enjoy your content here on RUclips, but I don't use any other forms of social media, so I miss out on the photos you post of the flowers. Don't lose heart, there are those who share your passion and interest, that's why we are here. I grew up surrounded by nature and prefer to be out in the wilderness than in a city filled with people. Life was so much simpler growing up on the side of a mountain in Alaska.
This is one of the most thoughtful and concise dives into the ramifications of abandoning Reality. I appreciate it!! KEEP CREATING EVERYONE. IT MATTERS MORE THAN EVER!!!
Last weekend I took pictures of the little birds behind our house, trying to get them short before landing or starting to fly. It have been amazing 2 hours for me and I got very nice pictures even there are no extraordinary birds. People were fascinated by these pictures, because you normally can‘t see these very short moments .. I love to show normal things but special moments and perspectives.. and knowing, that was real! Yes, KI will change a lot, but the more they are flooding the world with unreal fantastic pictures, the more they will be becoming worthless..
Always remember; there’s a reason people watch you…..you are genuine. AI can fake “genuine,” but it cannot *be* genuine. I’m here because you are genuine, and as a “specist,” because you are human. That’s not going to change. Cheers.
I’ve been a content creator on RUclips for 17 years. I’ve seen a ton of changes. Folks are overwhelmed with to much content and it’s effected view count and engagement. I’ve thought about quiting many times. But I always think about why I started a channel and it was because I love content creating and helping people. I believe because of that it’s allowed me the freedom to create what I want to create and not worry about views likes and comments. There are folks that will always complain but there are also folks that still need and want the personal connection.
I think the reason he got bored is because it's not challenging him enough. and its been an inconvenience vs photography. and ofc his appreciation for reality vs an interpretation of reality.
First off, i paused this video and went to your Instagram and clicked "like" on as many nature photos as i could find! I'm so with you in that thinking....no one looks up anymore and sees whats around them let alone appreciates it... everyone is stuck in their little 4" world in their hands. That's it, thats their world, that's their life, whatever is on that little screen is more important than anything going on around them. Just try and distract them from it... it's impossible, no matter what it is, they will finish that before looking up and responding to what you want to tell them, show them etc amd they've then missed it. Life and the world is passing by and they don't care because something on social media is more interesting. Another good comparison for where this world and its people are going is the movie Wall-E. See that one? People in the future are fat, stuck in floating chairs with screens in their face, and everything is brought to them. Truly that's where we're going. I make sure to leave my phone behind sometimes....i make sure to go for a bike ride, a walk, and just look up.. look around...ignore all the idiots stuck in their 4" worlds, and i see so much... Like you i disappear to nature when i can. I'm in Airdrie, Alberta Canada, just 40mins from the rocky mountains and when im out there, lost in nature, is when i feel the most alive...the most grounded...the most human. I appreciate your perspective Markus. Would love to just sit and talk with you someday...out in nature of course!
Creating art is an attempt to understand yourself, but in order to truly do so you have to share it with another consciousness. You sort of live by their response, even if you pretend not to, because it tells you something about yourself from the outside. If the population has become truly, deeply apathetic, then art no longer can inform the artist as to who they are, which is a deep, serious, emotional and psychological problem.
@@robertadams3925 Well stated. Its spiritual, if I may. We take matter and create, and that matter speaks to the population and they indeed give feedback. We need that kind of communication! We need that kind of community. What community does AI have? (Only to feed off of us batteries...our energy.)
I believe it will be the other way around, people of the future will be shocked we spent all our life in this dull lame reality rather than living out in cyberspace. It also make a lot of sense to transform our civilization into a digital one, better for our environment, less resources required, more energy efficient and you can do whatever you'd like in those places, you can live in a copy of reality if that is what you want. There is this theory that the reason we have not found any highly advanced civilizations is because rather than expanding outwards they instead went inwards and live in virtual worlds.
Markus, you are a sincere and incredibly skillfull person. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on so many topics. It is truly amazing to see how versatile you are in different art forms! Keep up the good work!
I relate to all of this that you’re saying. I lived in the dessert and unused to hike for hours by myself. I want to disappear Into the forest or away from everyone and unplug. I think we’re going to have a lot of depression and anxiety. People aren’t ready for this AI stuff.
You said it all. The older generations will find balance because we can appreciate reality but the younger generations will probably plug themselves into the matrix.
The fact we can build computers and virtual worlds in the first place is proof the Universe intended for this to occur, technology steer humanity forward and we simply adapt to whatever it make possible.
Markus, I understand your concerns. I am of a similar vintage to you, I grew up in a world when things were great, fun, we all enjoyed each others company and friends were real friends. We all perfected skills in music, art, sports and intellect and everybody respected each other and were happy for others achievements. Nobody really compared material things. In time family members would purchase new homes, cars etc and everyone congratulated them and were happy for them. There was none of the jealousy and envy we see today. One thing I have noticed since social media platforms came about, more and more people have become jealous, greedy, distrusting and riddled with envy. Not all friends are friends anymore as people are just competing against each other in so many ways. 'ayy eye', yes I wont even give it the satisfaction of typing it, is just a carry on effect of what social media has been grooming. De-socialising the planet, not for all but for those who are addicted to these cyber drugs. You and possibly many readers on this channel do see the right path to follow and feel saddened by what the world appears to be evolving into. It is a phase that people will endure, many will succumb to the saturation it will cause but the key is to be true to yourself, family and friends. The world will re-adjust, people will wake from this insidious moment in time and once again realise what life is about but unfortunately there will be many who will be forever lost in this changing world. Don't despair, don't worry about what you can't fix......let things move as they do but always understand who You are and what you have and will achieve as these are what it is in being human, understanding your place in society and your mark on humanity be it big or small.
As an experimental filmmaker, I feel your pain. So what I do is create for myself, for my own satisfaction and if some else appreciates my work that's fine, but it is not the reason that motives my creativity.
It may be that future art is not about the result, but seeing the artist work through the creative process. In fact you show the creative process in your videos, and people watch.
That probably is true - but it also means that the artist is never an artist anymore, but always an "artfluencer". I'm not sure I like that development...
You said it perfectly Creative Process. I watch his videos because I want to learn the steps through a real person explaining it like he is right here next to me. Ai can make things easier in some areas but human touch can never be replaced plus it adds more value to art in any form.
@@tsbrownie sure, but either way, that devolves into an attention economy. I.e., that means I buy a painting/t-shirt/whatever not because it's a good product, but because I want to support a creator. Which is fine I guess, but also precarious for artists: 1) one sh*tstorm because of whatever, and you lose all your revenue. 2) constant pressure to keep the viewership numbers (together with 1) ) results in total conformity. And ultimately, that makes it boring for me as a consumer, no? So to combat this, I'm sure there will be a niche of ever louder and more controversial people who take it further and further to get at least some reaction from a totally numbed public. I'm not sure I want to be a part of this, neither as a consumer nor as a creator. Maybe Markus has the right idea, and it's time to find a nice and cozy rock in the desert, or a wife with a garden...
@@derrick072 They don't care man, the audience doesn't care. He actually hit this pretty well when he mentioned private art, that you make a movie to show your friends and that's the extent of it, because that's the limit of it. If you wrote the most important story ever written, would the audience care? Is captain marvel in it? The plagarist ai that we have now is just an extension of corporate media, and it's been given to the masses. Paint by numbers as a form of control, not that it's necessarily intentional, but this is absolutely destroying artists. It's not destroying them financially, it's destroying their spirit, that no one any longer appreciates art. F*ck
Just found your channel literally an hour ago and was so inspired by the video where you showed how you made all those movies and movie props. Like literally wow! Regarding the AI thing, even though you seem super terrified of it, it think you aren't terrified enough. The AI is the most terrifying thing - there is nothing like it. It doesn't only have the potential to make fake everything, but it also has the potential to make real everything. Like it can literally take people's real world jobs and do them without anyone needing to pay it a thing, and on top of that it keeps getting better with the speed of light. The most teffiying thing about this is the actualization of what a human life is worth. When the AI which is actually smater than any human rolls out what is the value of human intellect and work at that point? Are the people who run this world going to keep the people who aren't able to be useful to the society around? This happens with the speed of light and ones we take a step forward that step can never be made undone. Soon AI will not only be able to take all our hoppies and make us useless in those, but it can also take all our jobs and make us useless in those too. The most terrifying thing is to now see how society treats those who fall out side of the society by not being able to get a job and hence have money. These people become homeness and society treats them like they would be cancer. People don't seem to understand that this is literally what is going to happen in 5 years for 80 % of all humans who now have a job in this world. AI will make them homeless and seen as cancer by the part of the cosiety which still has money and can do things. They will be seen as the zombies of the old world and they will be gotten rid of. Some people naively think they will soon roll out a universal income to tackle this issue, but knowing what I know about the human nature, I think instead of universal income they will give us the hunger games in which those deebed undesirable will be eliminated just like happened in the COVID pandemic.
No it isn't. What sort of entertainment do you consume? What movies, TV programs, magazines or books are Real? Everything has been FX laden or fantastical for decades.
Currently i would argue that AI art is instantly recognizable because the more you look at it the worse it gets. With real art, the more you look at it, the better.
The arguments for or against ai art basically don't matter. It's happening. The thing people need to do is adapt and figure out how to win in the midst of an AI powered world. Artists can still win unless they give up. Figure out how to create something better - and like any other technological leap, many will find out how to win by leveraging the new technology.
I have been watching the videos you made and make on a regular basis. I’m here to stay brother. The video you made call, “Your Effect on History” really touched my girlfriend’s and my heart. We just fell in love with your RUclips channel with the kind words you said. I have been a photographer/videographer since I was sixteen years old (now 51) and I feel the beauty in the world the way you do. I want to capture as much of the beauty as I can right now in the moment. I raised my children to see it too. My oldest, he is now a videographer and captures as much beautiful moments he can for people in their weddings. He loves doing this because it’s an art. I just see AI structures taking true balance of beauty and destroying the real images, the perfectly good images of a camera and ruining it for what is truly real. Realism is starting fly out the window and we don’t know what to believe is reality anymore. I purchased an AI powered program for my very highly capable computer. The images of me looking so clean and free of imperfections it’s just scary. I can only think the many thousands of dollars I have invested into having a studio in my home has been a waste of money. Smartphones are doing the job that I have done for years in less time and without having the third party with the knowledge how to create a beautiful image from experiencing the tricks passed down to me, from learning from my mistakes. AI is scaring me to death. I just hope I can still photograph people and save their memories for them. I hope these people can still see the value in having a physical photograph to hang on the walls is beyond amazing having been done using the lighting and shadows and still seeing the artwork and the beauty of that photograph.
Apparently things will have to get horribly destructive in order for some of us to push back against it and vow to never again allow things to get so bad. And then it will likely repeat again in the future because many of us are able to forget the lessons of life.
I feel the same way! I am good at a lot of things and art and photography are a couple things. I stopped doing art, even though I had done that most of my life. I was not passionate about it. Then everyone got into digital photography and I quit that too. Just because you bought a camera doesn't mean you have the eye for it or know how to shoot images. I get so bored with stuff. I do music now and am slowly getting fed up with the business now too. It's all a stupid competition anymore. The other problem with AI is it's generating images using STOLEN artwork!! UGH!
You’re not rambling. You’re thinking out loud for the concerns of the future. I like these videos. Gives us time to stop and smell the roses and look around to notice the changes in life.
I truly believe we will enter a two earth system, I am a massage therapist and I have been saying to my clients “you have 2 roads in front of you, it’s time to make a choice, do you choose the unhealthy, live in the “follow others” road, or the other road is stay in nature, eat from nature, breath nature, talk to the animals, hug a tree”? I have already chosen the later, just today saved a Dragon Fly who accidentally got into my pool cage, following it around with a pool scoop/net saying “let me help you out”, I finally got him out. We leave this rattan chair (not the greatest shape) in the pool area, it’s home of the lizards Harold and Lucy , can’t get rid of their home🥰 Lots of Love to you, Marcus and Cara… I believe we are entering the Age of Aquarius and it’s an Age of Love and Technology…I will stick with mostly Love/Nature and a bit of tech. I bought your artbook years ago and still look at it from time to time. I love it and think it's a great portfolio of your previous work. I like drawing myself and I totally get it. I can spend a day on a drawing and it gets 15 likes on Instagram and then there are people that "make" AI Art and it gets 5,000 likes. Honestly, AI Art doesn't really impress me much. It all looks the same to me and while it does look superficially nice it just doesn't do much for me. I prefer looking at art made by real artists (yes I said it.) Real art has all sorts of details and nuance that I just don't see in AI Art. I've always been sensitive to spiritual energy and such and I feel a lot of Spiritual Energy radiating off of your artwork in particularly. Many of you paintings feel as if they are "light coded." I personally enjoy all your posts weather they have you and/or Cara in them and I like posts about nature and such too. I like variety myself. I like both this channel and your other channel because it's real and authentic and that's what I love. :)
I rang the alarm bell back in 1992 when we saw the first digital T-Rex from ILM at Stan Winston's studio. This is the beginning, I said to a group of fellow artists that told me that I was being pessimistic. Here we are 31 years later and everyone is about to become obsolete and irrelevant due to digital technology. Here is the thing: use it sparingly. Leave social media. Learn to spend time with people face to face. And don't watch or subscribe to channels ballyhooing AI. Create on your terms, with your techniques, for YOU. Leave a legacy behind for people to discover after the grid finally collapses.
You have a great point! AI is scary in this regard. My thought is that this situation will only force you to be more creative, and do something AI cannot.
I care and I love the real stuff....I find beauty everywhere I look. I think a heart filled with appreciation and gratitude helps with that. I have all of your amazing books (and products), including your paintings which are breath-taking. You are authentic, talented, wise and aware and very much appreciated. Grateful hugs to you and Cara, who I consider as two of my precious Earth Angels. 💖🌱🐦🌷😇🥗😇🌷🐦🌱💖
Honestly if we’re watching your channel, we’re probably not going to be the type to only crave the newest and best/most expensive, etc, we are after the real life, make it work, do what you have to do. There’s always going to be a group that craves the vinyl record, the film photograph, the real behind the ai
Wow. I just found you because I was trying to figure out something photography related, then I watched your “who I am” video and this “Ai” video… Wow. I love your HEART so much! Nothing delights me more in this world than seeing someone follow their own interests, joy, and alignment and COMPLETELY succeed and excel as a result of that. You are a gift! By simply being yourself, you show others that it is not necessary to try to “fit in” or do what society tells us we’re “supposed” to do. (In fact, those things often keep us from joy and alignment, but are still important teachers and part of our learning to align and trust ourselves.) Alignment, joy, love, and LEARNING is what this life is about and you are living it! I’m really just so happy to know you exist, that you have been living an extraordinary life by simply being yourself and letting Life guide and unfold in a way that was the most interesting to you. Thanks for trusting and listening to yourself… and for being willing to share videos of you just being yourself. That’s a bold and much needed move. Many blessings to you and thank you for being an inspiring example of self love and alignment to me and the world. ❤
I think people will eventually get tired of "perfect" art that came with no human effort, and they'll want to revert and pay more for imperfections and human work. I, for one, have no ambition to go towards AI. I like to keep things simple and humanized. I appreciate all that you do, Markus, and I appreciate you bringing up this discussion! 💚
Then AI will make less perfect art. There will be no room for human art. AI art will be everywhere and so much of it that there won't be any room for human made art.
@@moodyswings9812 I know there's a good possibility that you're right, but I hope not. There's something unique about humanization, and I hope we never lose that.
With all these considerations and worries, I can guarantee you one thing: No virtuality, no matter how well made, including the use of the aforementioned artificial intelligence in all possible situations, will ever replace the unsurpassably exciting, physical life. Nothing replaces natural, real life with all its physical and mental constellations. Otherwise the power of creation would have created something else. And only the rather small-minded, superficial, shallow people with little to no creativity find lasting pleasure in your "sterile virtuality" described in the video. So it's only a temporary thrill because it's too artificial, too virtual, too fake, too sterilely mathematical. Anyone with any depth will analyze this accordingly and at some point look behind the scenes that are never truly profoundly fulfilling. This is how and how it is with the decisive nature of life. And if the brain is not enough for many to recognize it, the heart always will in the end. You can be too sure of that. And oh yes, haha, I know only too well what I'm talking about. Straight any kind regards -.
Thanks for speaking up with style, Markus! You really do this well and as a fellow artist, naturalist, engineer with a penchant for the “truth”, I share your concerns and am looking for collaborators with solutions to fill the voids when people realize what they’re missing. All the best! - Mark
I actually also fearing what for me - as a creator (voice over) this means...if we are out of the job..but to be really honest I fear the destruction of human kind through that thing the most....and it was agreat video - Bitte mach mehr dieser VIdeos!!! It is so real!!!!
Markus, this is one of your best segments (not that others are great as well). As an artist, I learned the airbrush (Iwata has been my favorite). I still have it unused for the last 20 years because Photoshop made it obsolete. I started to paint more abstractly. But even that is now replaced by AI. Luckily, I went to art schools and learned the craft of jewelry manufacturing in Switzerland. The takeaway is that we need to reinvent ourselves to stay ahead.
You nailed it, Mahalo. I see a transition from the “outer” to the “inner world “. When we start to focus on what’s good for us, personally without caring what other think about us, we gonna shift. Experience the nature by ourself without the need to tell anyone what we do. Our soul has chosen our body to experience this life for a specific purpose. We’re witnessing a transition like never before. It’s a wake-up call. Aloha
I know a lot of people are talking about going back and appreciating the imperfections of the "old" way, and I just want to say that I recently experienced the same thing with my personal photography. I have been taking photos for years now, but recently it got to the point where anyone with a phone could achieve the same photos as me with my fancy camera and hours of editing. I noticed that all photos were getting so "perfect" and just getting a good photo of whatever was in front of me was no longer enough. I started to play around more with the feel of the images I took, and began to appreciate the actual process of photography. After my grandmother gave me her father's old film camera, I started using that, and realized that it takes both of those things to a new level. I no longer take photos to get the perfect picture of what's in front of me, but more for the fun of taking photos and capturing my mood and feelings through an image. Yes, I _could_ get a perfect representation of real life, but it's way more fun to put work into the art of photography, and truly capture a photo that holds a feel and emotion in the imperfections. There's no saying how AI art will progress, but I know nothing is going to stop me from enjoying the picture taking process and ending up with a real photo that I can appreciate.
Take photos is like to go fishing. Maybe you won’t get any fish, but the ride is fun! I do almost delete 90% of pictures I take. But is fun to be there and make click.
I think you nailed this. Most people don’t care and will just go with whatever the universe feeds them, “That’s cool, I want more of that. They say (who are they?) this is the best and I must have it.” We are in the middle of a sea change and not for the better. You’ve presented a lot to unpack, and most people just leave that stuff in the boxes. We are living in interesting times. You should note the four or five people on Instagram that like the flower and sunset photos and follow them back.
I think you are right to a point. I DO think that AI will iterate and feed on itself and go off in very extreme directions which will differentiate it from more realistic work. Remember, painters who saw the first photograph did NOT feel really great!
You made our family think deep at all levels. Keep doing you, forget those who don't care the beauty of what you do the way you like to create. I remember when I told someone who had many tattoos I wanted one. She said, you don't have any? I said no, she told me, be the one who never got one, now you are different because everyone 3lse does. Take this story and analyze it. You are now doing and creating the way other's aren't. Blessings 😊
Totally agree with you and I relate to the ‘frustration’. I came from film days as and assistant to a commercial photographer where boss is strict and serious, I would beg for a piece of info or advice to learn. What I’ve received till date is the process and memory that is very precious and personal to me, nothing to prove. Today people are not interested in the joy and process of learning and only interested in getting the result to show and bring attention to themselves, the hits the likes and so forth. What I pity them is that they are rob of the wonderful experience and memory of the learning process. Just imagine a baby is born and without the process of growing and learning, he is brought to adulthood in a min in a special machine. He thought its acceleration but actual fact he is rob of the process of learning n joy of growing tat makes who we are and our character. It’s going to be a cold and selfish world we are going into. Sad but true !
Hey Markus, Bravo. This was surreal for me as I've literally been in the exact same situation as you and as I looked over your channel realized the similarities are extraordinary. We've been living in parallel Universes! It kind of looks like my wife and I (Tabitha Stevens) are a weird mirror of you and Cara even down to having survived Hollywood and now living in Vegas (Summerlin). At any rate we 100% feel the same thing you are in this evolving AI epoch. Strange times indeed and quite unsettling. I've spent 30 years as a producer, director, cinematographer, fine art photographer and having hard earned skill sets devolve to the push of a button is wildly horrifying. Also... super psyched to hear you two are hitting Death Valley area. We've been doing that for ages and I've been something of a filming adventure madman all over the Southwest my entire life. If you are ever in need some off-grid locations which are truly mesmerizing near Las Vegas where you won't see another human let me know... my Google Earth has about 2,000 location pins in it! Good Thoughts to you and Cara! Tabitha says hello! G
These are all interesting points Markus. true this is a weird time to be an artist or a content creator but the thing I think you are missing is.. yes there are a lot of content creators that want to be acknowledged and be followed by millions but let's not forget that there are simple people who just enjoy the process and thinking of sharing their experiences
Being blessed with artistic ability is a quality that must be appreciated. Look at architecture, art music etc… Without art life is boring and unfulfilled. Picasso is a great example of making art that is not mathematically harmonious. There is beauty in imperfection because that is life.
People will need to carry on creating art, it may not be hyper realistic stuff, but it's the effort they put into it, and feeling some satisfaction in the journey, as they say.
This is a sobering conversation. This was actually what got me away from Photography, which I started with but had to move away from when I realized my wife was taking photos with her phone and using a couple of Instagram filters and it was looking great. Meanwhile I was spending so much time on photoshop and technical aspects of my photos. So, I moved to video. I spent so much time on learning that craft and now I realize AI is going to replace that as well! I don't know what's next... maybe VR or AR... but it seems like we're running away from a monster that will eventually catch up. :/
I'm still madly in love with the Mojave Desert, from my short year there in the 1980's! Knowing even what little I know about your amazing artistic talent and pure, creative genius, I understand why you would be upset. If it helps, I was thoroughly impressed with your city models and the sets you created. Yes, your paintings do look like photographs, which is incredible. To have all of that talent under-appreciated has to be frustrating. As I live alone and haven't a single friend in the world, I use my 3-foot-tall Belle, from Disney's 1991 "Beauty and the Beast" doll as my model for photography. She's helped improve my studio lighting, and I have lots of great photos of her. Lately, I've also been using her to create some fun AI pictures. In fact, I just picked up an 11"x14" print of one of those pictures from Walgreens, this morning. I put myself in that one, too. As I have no artistic talent, AI allows me to create some fun pictures. I did my brother's nice 1963 Ford Falcon convertible, where it was rusted out and up on blocks (not like real life). I also did his 1968 Corvette and 1939 Hudson with AI. He has several other cool cars and motorcycles, too.
It's about finding a balance between staying true when making art & using tools to help you on your passion journey. I've been enjoying all these AI tools so far, but I do it my own way (fo example, using stablediffusion for references for my oil paintings), if I was driven by money I would just sell prints instead. But that's boring & I don't care if my oil paintings sell for less than what they cost to make cus I do what I do. Be a passion machine and you'll stay human. Don't aspire to be like an AI... reduce entropy, stay humble, stay human. All the cool stuff around you is just cool stuff. Learn to tell the difference.
It would help for more people to practice or appreciate the act of creating as opposed to just consuming. In our saturated media-sphere, it would likely take challenging, nuanced introspection. There's always going to be a disparity, but fostering a population with an appreciation for the effort it takes to create the objects, images, and stories that fill our world would be a net positive.
The world is a strange place and seems to be getting stranger by the minute. You speak from your heart, which resonates with me and I suspect with your audience. It seems frightening what AI will be able to do in the future but even now AI understands our sensory reality and is impacting it in ways we don't understand. What I am really concerned about is what happens when AI understands how to manipulate our feelings in ways we may not ever understand ourselves...... The best advise which is repeated in the comments, continue to create because you can, and for fun. While I have never met you I value what you say but more importantly how you say and the purpose of what you do. Have faith we can get through the changes of the future! The best thing we can all do it vote with our time by unplugging more and for longer periods of time. Love what you do!
I think eventually the AI “art” will eventually make people come full circle and hunger for real human-created art but it could take a long time, maybe taking humanity to breaking point first.
We have been talking about all of this so much lately. As a musician, I feel like the mainstream is going to get hit the hardest with AI created songs etc. because that audience just doesn't care. The smaller niches like Metal and Jazz will at least be ok in the live sector. However, only if people still have jobs and make enough money to go see a show.
I seek out real music in real space. The best is when you have a group around a campfire and no electronics. I can see that being worth an expensive ticket.
Marcus thank you for making this video! You made some wonderful points and observations about this subject. Keep creating, learning and sharing. I will be checking in even when we find ourselves, surrounded by an abundance of artificial reality. I truly appreciate your positive voice. ✊🏽
Thank you Markus, I really enjoyed this very much. It brought me back down to Earth. We gotta remember the little things in life. This could be a good series of you being a kid and rambling on because it’s cool to see your view on life, experiences, and your wisdom. It was wonderful of you to share your passed painting life. That was an eye opener because I used to paint and you connected the dots for me on why I stopped painting as well. It really made sense now. Thank you again Brother and keep it up!
Absolutely all of this. The moment this was hitting from December/January (when it actually began sinking in), I was spewing the same thoughts to all my closer friends - reminding them of the dawn of Google Images as a graphic designer which was moving far too fast to chase people down over about copyright infringement, and the beginning of outsourcing to countries for cheaper work like the Philippines. I was immediately saying the ability to generate impressively-real impressive images / art would make the true scarcity of beauty totally moot in the experience of the beholder - not to mention the fact that having even an inkling of a second thought in your mind of 'is this real' already automatically diminishes the value of anything real. I mean, it's the human condition at scale. For all our advancements, for every inch we could possibly gain - none of it addresses the self. None of it addresses human nature. We so struggle to make it novel that we can't bear to sit with the reality of what's in us or be confronted with the boredom of our own ineptitude. Definitely makes me think of the film Being John Malkovich - all of this - but as you described, the avatars of people created through this removal; this semblance of experience. That was another point I've been not shutting up about already, from particularly 2012-2015 and onward as people began to invest more of their identity in their online experiences. And all the Copywriting courses or whoever shilling their courses that are already obsolete (and they're just in denial still)... People want to imagine there's this spark in what they do that AI won't replicate, but no. The compounding/exponential growth curve of these LLM's are essentially in-process of mirroring all expressed human reality ever recorded or accounted for.
Hopefully, if we all stick to our passions and set a good enough example, there will be more of the younger generation wanting to find that same joy in creating something on their own and just using AI as a useful tool when needed. Markus, thanks for being that down to earth "simple" person we can follow. Also, it was nice to meet you at HoDo last month 👍
markus, your timing is impeccable, a few hours ago A music artist put a warning out that if anyone used AI and his music or his voice or physical form he would sue the crap out of them. I have already heared AI freddy mercury singing a Michael jackson song and AI Ed sheran singing an Adel song and I hate it, I honestly have a visceral gut feeling that this is a very bad move. You correctly stated about it being impossible to police heck, we cant police the internet now so god knows how this will pan out. I have a feeling that lots of creative folk will be following your lead and finding their owndeath valley and rock to sit out the madness.
I’ve loved photography for my whole adult life. I tried to get into making video and was overwhelmed with color, sound, editing and all this. I realized that I didn’t like it. The best way for me to relax is to just carry my camera around and take pictures of anything that appears interesting to me. This causes me to go out and enjoy the world. Life is the blessing.
I think painters probably felt the same way when photography was invented, but AI is just a tool, a tool that can be used for the good and the bad. And there is one thing that makes photography different from AI, AI can't capture moments and memories 🙂
good point . a painter can instantly paint on any blank surface an ai image is limited to the screen or needing other tech to transfer it .human art will always be superior .
@@meatman2024 AI images can be be printed on just about any blank surface. I agree that human art is superior but digital art is easier and quicker and will be pervasive
I feel the same as you. People don't care. In fact everyone I know only wants pictures of them looking good. They don't want reality, that's why people use makeup, and hair styles and hide their body in some "shaping" clothes. So it looks that "computers" are going to kill creatives instead of the boring tedious jobs. Like a certain company that in order to show diversity/inclusiveness in its marketing, decided to use AI created photos of people instead of hiring a diverse set of models.
i could totally relate to you. When I was younger I loved drawing, until I got older and I found filmmaking to be much more satisfying that I haven't drawn in years. Personally, I find AI Fascinating. The Geek child inside me still loves cool stuff. And I want to consume and create cool stuff. So if AI can make it easier for me while still giving me a sense of creativity, I'm all for it. You seem to be dissatisfied with where AI is headed based on this video.
I understand that you don't like to paint, but those are amazing! I would love to be able to paint even a percentage of that. I have played with AI. I also believe it could be an issue with pretending to be someone else.
Markus thank you for being there for everyone on RUclips platforms . We are simple general people of the world and we care ! You are special and you have something to tell and show the whole world . Keep it up.
Pausing the video 10 seconds in. Holy shit man, somehow the algo suggested one of your earlier videos where I saw the fx you did in the 80's/90's, then I decided to check your channel and found this video. The content of this video is exactly something I've been dealing with for several weeks now. AI isn't true AI, but a sort of plagarism shorthand that could expedite vfx, concept art, etc., and these are easily the cornerstones of cinema magic. I had to stop 10 seconds in to say this, eager to now watch the rest of the video. I hope we can all still feel inspired in this new world, but the shortcut that pseudo "ai" has presented developers with, circumventing artists and vfx designers, has seriously tested my inspiration to create lately. Thanks for sharing everything.
Holy shit man, "nobody cares." This is why games are removing their single player content and just making mulitplayer kill boxes. Why hire an extra 80 people to write and direct a script when the people will buy whatever's put in front of them, it all comes down to the publisher and marketing, not the product. "What's the step after that?" Good god man, I'm sorry. "People who are just trying to bring beauty and truth to the world are going to be just buried, with all this crazy, free for all of non reality..." man you're speaking for all of us right now. Thanks for sharing this.
I agree with a lot of this that AI poses huge problems and I’m glad you think that, I’m commenting half way through the video, but I just wanna say I do love your videos about all your practical effects and behind the scenes stuff from your old movies. That stuff is super cool and I think a lot of people care! Ok continuing the video now
Markus - I came over here from your health channel, since I am about to embark on a YT show-making process. I for one will be resisting the AI culture. I will continue to value you and other humans making human-created art. Perhaps a new movement will come from this. A movement of people who value and want to preserve human made art. We must! I am a voice teacher from the classical tradition. I resist auto-tune and I love the little mistakes we once heard in recordings. I still work on my voice the same way I did in the 90s. There are many benefits to doing things the classical way. We have to do our part to preserve this part of our culture! Keep going. We love you.
Spot on - and from a person like me that is focusing on creating 'as real as possible' experiences online, I can see where what I do could be replaced - in fact Google's latest venture into Immersive View is doing just that, combining lidar data and images with just a simple mobile phone. I think, like you, when I capture a scene, it's not just to be viewed and appreciated, it's to encourage people to go experience the real thing for themselves. Whether it be a business, a beach, a mountain view, I want people to say, hey I want to go there in person too and really feel what it's like to be there. Up till now, the best I have known to do that is 360° photos and virtual tours. But now... AI could 'fake' all that. Time for me to unplug again... and go bush!
Please keep making videos like this, your opinion is valuable and I share the same thoughts. People need to be reminded on what will happen and how the future will change to keep continuous about it.
When the TV is off, it is object number one. It is simply a box with a glass wall that we are free to look at or not. When a person's gaze falls on a dark screen, the movement of his eyes is controlled solely by internal nerve impulses or by a mental process going on in his mind. For example, a person may notice that the screen is full of flies. Or decide that it would be good to buy a TV set twice as big. Or think it would be good to move it to another corner. A TV that doesn't work is no different from the objects that people dealt with in the Buddha's time, whether it was a stone, a dew on a blade of grass or an arrow with a bifurcated tip--in short, all the things that the Buddha used to exemplify in his talks. But when the TV is turned on, it transforms from object number one to object number two. It becomes a phenomenon of an entirely different nature. And although the viewer does not notice the usual metamorphosis, it is tremendous. For the viewer, television disappears as a material object with weight, size, and other physical qualities. Instead, the viewer has the feeling of being in another space, familiar to all those gathered. When a person looked at a switched off television set, his eye movements and the flow of his attention were controlled by his own volitional impulses, even if chaotic. The dark screen without any image had no effect on them, or did, but only as a background. A switched on TV almost never transmits a static view from a single stationary camera, so the image on it is not the background. On the contrary, this image changes intensively. Every few seconds there is either a change of frame, or an overlap with some object, or a switch to another camera - the image is continuously modified by the operator and the director behind him. Such image modification is called techno-modification. As a result of various techno-modifications, the change of images on the screen can be matched with a conditional mental process, which would make the observer switch his attention from one event to another and single out the most interesting things from what is happening, that is, manage his attention the way the film crew does it for him. A virtual subject of this mental process emerges, who for the duration of the telecast exists instead of the person, entering his consciousness like a hand into a rubber glove. It is similar to the state of spirit possession; the difference is that this spirit does not exist, but only the symptoms of possession. This spirit is contingent, but the moment the viewer trusts the crew to arbitrarily redirect his attention from object to object, it is as if he becomes that spirit, and the spirit, which does not really exist, possesses him and millions of other viewers. It is appropriate to call what is happening an experience of collective non-existence, since the virtual subject that replaces the viewer's own consciousness does not exist at all - it is merely an effect resulting from the collective efforts of the editors, cameramen, and director. On the other hand, for the person watching television, there is nothing more real than this virtual subject..
Interesting points. I work mental health and I also believe people are chasing that dopamine fix for bigger and better, but eventually it'll all blend and people will be looking for your type of authentic skill and content. 🙌 On a side note, your hair is awesome! A time lapse over the years would be so cool.
We see what you see and have the same questions. I'm thankful for you putting out videos like this so we can have these conversations. The human race has a lot of choices to make.
I really feel this deep into my heart. I feel so sad, I have 2 small kids and I honestly don’t know if they’re gonna experience the “real” world. What I’ve always had challenges setting goals for the future and aim towards that, therefore I’ve often just drifted along in my life. But now it’s just like I don’t even believe in a future at all. Recently discovered you Markus and I’m happy that you exist and that you spread your thoughts and wisdom, some about the photography but mostly as a human. All the best and keep it coming. Human connection matters!
I am already tired of perfect. Not watching movies anymore. Nor tv shows or video games. I take pictures I do not share w many people and make music my way and do not share it around but listen to it w a close circle. It feels better. You are right about the trajectory.
AI=The loss of our humanity. I believe it all began with social media and has continued exponentially. Cameras, like anything else are just a tiny little part of this, but I do think it's kind of a great metaphor to look at some of the new cameras that will do everything for you, which for me, could not be more boring. I find myself not wanting to even use auto focus at all. But I agree with you, this is the way of the world, and it can't be stopped. I feel sorry for the youth of this world. But then again, maybe I just don't understand. Thanks for sharing such an insightful video as always, and maybe I'll see you in the desert, looking at some rocks. Keep making art. It matters more than anything now. Real, organic art. At least to me.
I recently heard someone say that AI is "the beast," as in the biblical description. It lures you in with all the amazing things it can do, but then you, as a human, are left feeling incapable or inadequate because AI can do stuff in seconds that takes you as a human hours and hours of creative expression. AI circumvents your own creative genius and love, which is a soul killer.
We see and feel passion, character, enthusiasm, and love from your work and it provides the pleasure we enjoy and appreciate. AI will never be able to produce those characteristics. You will always prevail Markus!
I think the most importnt thing and the last thing you can do is be yourself. You didn't have a backdrop or anything fancy behind you. Yet, your raw self is what captivated me and had me watching this entire video. There are alot of people who couldnt care less. But there are people watching behind a screen that would love to have a personal and physical conversation with you. Some people would enjoy your coffeetable paintings. They care about what youre passionate about and what knowledge you have to give. Thats what drew me to subscribe. You are a genuine person who loves filmmaking and that alone is reasdon enough to keep posting. Don't let AI discourage you. Nothing is better than whats real.
Hey Markus. I had a similar existential moment about this. We are headed into some weird times. Artists have a way of staying hungry and will find other ways of finding and filling the void. Part of my life is as a muso, I just play to small groups...it's enough, and that is the question...how much is enough. Stay strong mate (Australian term of endearment).
I agree 100% with you. On one hand its amazing, on the other its worrisome becauase the limits seem to be endless and so far without bounderies. Where this will go ? who knows but I for one will still practice traditional "digital" photography and will still enjoy watching your very informative videos. Keep up the great work! there are a lot of folks just like me that will keep watching them as long as you keep making them!
A perfect honest discussion from the edge of the abyss. Just like you I was an artist in Pratt in the late 80s and I’ve been riding the whole digital crazy thing witnessing all these technologies disappear: printing, photography, photolabs, print houses, moving on to experiencing digital manipulation and now 3-D printing. It’s wonderful. And now I’m mixing in AI …We should feel lucky to witness such a spectacular thing. This has been the beginning of “Peak Experience” from everyone all at once for the last 30 or so years. You can either be screaming and crying the whole roller coaster life or laughing and being in the moment for the whole ride. We both see the end of the ride is a twisted piece of rails just shooting us into the abyss, but hey, we’re not there yet. So stop screaming. Enjoy.
Maybe people are so used to presenting themselves- not being in the moment, experiencing. This is why I dropped IG- people selling products, themselves, politics, resending the works of others. There was no conversation, no considering of what they presented. They might show a problem that is causing outrage- but no talk of solutions, no asking why.
Thank you for expressing that. one example of truth being tweaked by special effects is the very popular 'Fast and Furious' series. The first couple you could dismiss and as overdone action, but after that it got ridiculous. I also am concerned about the AI influence. and how we are losing touch with the real. Maybe an EMP wouldn't be such a bad thing. Would make a great movie, Mr Movie Maker!
I started painting at 69. I do not care if anyone likes my paintings or is it the most professional painting out there. The point is that it is so calming and peaceful that if you like it great and if not does not matter. You probably got burnt out in people's reactions to your paintings and what you should do and not do that I do not blame you for quitting. Your talented in so many ways that you did what makes you happy. The point is that your energy is always there and whatever you do will be Awesome. I have been following you for years for your information and always appreciate it. Your green drinks and sea moss are the best and as times are evolving more people are going to gravitate towards you. As far as AI, it is a challenge and with anything it will take time to sort out for not just artist but all business.
You the only channel I watch for no reason at all, there's no agenda, I just like what you have to say and how you see the world. Firstly... I Care. In regards to Ai ... Humanity will endure. Cheers Markus
You are so echoing the feelings that I've been having. I had made comments as far back as 15 years ago, after the over "PhotoShopping" of images had already become so wide spread, that if I'd known that it was going to come to that I'd have learned 3D modelling software and really gotten into PhotoShop and would have just created my own Models (that were exclusive to me) and just created everything in the computer. I was still thinking along the lines of shooting real locations and props. I've said for a long time that "we knew that we were in trouble when PhotoShop became a verb." I enjoy your videos, you are entertaining and insightful and even introspective at times like in this video. I think that there will be a rebellion to this trend where at least some artists will want to actually create real world images but the Genie is definitely out of the bottle. I do find it ironic that this trend is blowing up at the same time that some are making a move back to actual film. The latter are definitely in the minority. Have a blessed week. BTW, I loved the Tiny Reflector video!
Weirdly as a fan of sci-fi I can take some satisfaction in the absolutely crazy time we're all entering into. Yes to all the concerns you mentioned. But also, it's mind blowing to get to live through this era when I can have an intelligent, nuanced conversation with a computer.
Don't worry Markus, nothing bad will happen... the human nature is the same as always and nothing really changed... Everything is a trend at a point. Think about renaissance and fresco, think about sculptures... People tend to criticize those who stay with their eyes in their smartphones, but before that people were stuck with their eyes on newspapers, it's just the same. Being gifted with the talent for painting, you were the right person, at the right spot at the right time... Someone who knows how to exploit AI is the right person, at the right spot at the right time... right now... Kids old days used to go out because they had nothing to do in their homes... later on, they were stuck on TV watching cartoons, now they're stuck on their consoles playing Fortnite, later on they will do what will be the trend at the time. Previously they didn't go out because they chose that, but because that was the time... Then they didn't stay on TV because they chose that, but because that was the time... but human nature was always the same and considering that... in fact, everything is the same...
I know im not the only artist that gets slightly un easy with this kind of thing. Because we take so much time and effort in our work. And an Ai will just make something from whatever it can get. Thats not fair in my opinion. But what needs to happen is the Ai needs to take a step back because its all up in our macaroni right now. We shouldn't accept this as art just yet. Because right now the Ai is stealing if anything.
As a musician I'm with you all the way!
Im glad fewer people are going to be out there in nature taking selfies and "look at me" photos. I can get back to enjoying photography
This made me laugh. I love game days because no one is on the hiking trails.
As a 3d artist I noticed a cycle in entertainment. When things get bigger and more and more bombastic, people start craving smaller more personal things. I expect that we'll go through a phase of digital art gluttony, but my hope is that there will also be a big branch of art that people love because it's real & personal. The indie-games movement was a good example for this
I'm already doing that with cameras... smaller simpler older ones
I sure hope you’re right
So true I am an indi game dev making 16bit games like in the 80s you know Mario with a friend of mine it's so cool to make old school stuff with low tec
Me too. Im a newbie, but most of my photographs are of the tiny things in nature.
You have 121k people that like to do the same stuff as you. We are not going anywhere. Keep it up
Hehee its another way around.
But it isnt abandoning reality it us our current reality. I agree just keep creating with modern tools.
AGREE!!!
Think you missed the point, it doesn't matter anymore, no one is buying reality. The future is Technology and Ai is the new frontier.
@@johnholland2825 So just embrace the Matrix?
Such a depressing world awaits us ahead.
Cheers.
Totally agree. Please do video's teaching us your painting technique, Mark. Your paintings are amazing and I would love to see how you pain.
I’m a small channel and I like it. I can get to know people over time.
this is crazy how your paintings are so freaking awesome Markus. wow.
Thank you
One thing I learned through this channel is to have fun and do things creatively for myself primarily AI won’t change that for me
Creating art is an attempt to understand yourself, but in order to truly do so you have to share it with another consciousness.
I think many people might gain a new appreciation for nature and reality, once they figure out how empty the digital world feels
Think again.

Correct loooooooool
Not entirely true. I'm 34 and I'd trade the worst day of reality over the best day of artificial dopamine rush... my reason is simple, its organic!
The fact we can build computers and virtual worlds in the first place is proof the Universe intended for this to occur, technology steer humanity forward and we simply adapt to whatever it make possible.
@@Danuxsy Not everything that evolves lasts. Evolution is the exception. Extinction is the norm.
That's why I have two dogs, they keep it real.
I hope you're ok, Markus. You're definitely not boring!

I.e., that means I buy a painting/t-shirt/whatever not because it's a good product, but because I want to support a creator.
Which is fine I guess, but also precarious for artists:
1) one sh*tstorm because of whatever, and you lose all your revenue.
Love the topic, wild times man
You’re absolutely right, AI is a danger for real creativity 🙁
This is why black and white film photography is making a comeback.
You're right, on Instagram I'm seeing all these AI generated models that could pass for real people. It's wild
Wow. I just found you because I was trying to figure out something photography related, then I watched your “who I am” video and this “Ai” video…
Wow.
Show a painting, you’ll get Maybe one like. Show how a painting is made, 1000 likes.
@@moodyswings9812 I know there's a good possibility that you're right, but I hope not. There's something unique about humanization, and I hope we never lose that.

An old hand sewn quilt is worth more than new. Some machines are programmed to make errors so it seems they were made by a person.
Great book example: "Who Stole my Cheese".
"Be a passion machine "... I like that!
I totally agree with you.
You can buy copies of Van Gogh s paintings but people still want the real thing. It will be interesting to watch what will happen.........
How beautiful "life is the blessing".
We have been accustomed to instant gratification now rather than appreciating the creativity that goes into art. Great video. Thank you!
I think painters probably felt the same way when photography was invented, but AI is just a tool, a tool that can be used for the good and the bad.
And there is one thing that makes photography different from AI, AI can't capture moments and memories 🙂
I was thinking that (about the painters)!

good point . a painter can instantly paint on any blank surface an ai image is limited to the screen or needing other tech to transfer it .human art will always be superior .
Are people trying to create memories? Or just content to be watched?
So glad I found your channel. You really have a valuable voice for the world. Love your energy.
Keep it up.
I think people would really enjoy watching you take the pictures from beginning to end, I think a lot of people enjoy the process and the learning.
I’ll have to check out your channel.
On a side note, your hair is awesome!
Hey Markus, thank you for your intriguing story. You would think that art would always stay on the surface. We will see what the future holds.
Enjoy.
It’s probably time to reflect why we feel like we need to WOW other people instead of just enjoy beautiful things alone
I've said for a long time that "we knew that we were in trouble when PhotoShop became a verb."
I enjoy your videos, you are entertaining and insightful and even introspective at times like in this video.
Dude your art is amazing. You are appreciated by those of us with a brain.
