Back in the day, once we beat the game, my brother and I made it a mission to 'experimrnt' by defeating Bowser with different suits. The hammer, by far, was the most lethal in dispatching Bowser. Fireballs work as well, but it truly takes forever. We also didn't realize that if you stand right on top of Bowser's head, you don't die or take a hit; you merely 'bounce off' him.
I always found that path easier, actually. Once you learn to time the jumps, which isn't too bad, you only have one enemy to deal with - the one active laser firing thing in a room full of dummies - and some flames to jump over. Mostly just timing. You can take both paths if you like. Just before the door that leads to Bowser, there is a dummy laser thingie on a ledge, and above it is just enough space for a crouching Mario to fit. If you have the P-wing or can make the jump (I think you can, but it's been a while), you can exploit the same wall glitch that was used to avoid the annoying part at 0:28. This sends you into the other room.
Hammer suit was by far my favorite as a kid. I remember killing bowser so fast it was almost wrong. I didn't stand under him though, that was crazy quick

Oh, yeah, it's definitely my favourite way of getting past Bowser. One of the things I used to do when I was a kid was save one of the special power-ups so I could see which ones might be able to kill him faster, so I tried it with the fire flower, hammer suit, and Tanooki suit. The flower was faster than doing it the "right" way, stomping him with Tanooki Mario doesn't accomplish anything, and the hammer suit does it hella fast. The problem is getting there. Running under those lasers at the beginning only works 80% of the time. I don't know if the game occasionally slows down by a fraction of a second the other 20%, but, to be safe, I always jump over. The rest of the level is actually really easy if you take the route in this video. Avoiding the flames at the end is the only real effort, and it's not too bad.
The hardest part of this is to reach Bowser without losing the suit. You have to take the highest route to conserve the power up, because in the middle route you always get hit by one of Bowser's fireballs when you jump to a platform that is over the lava.
I loved that outfit so much, but it was so rare, there are like only 2 in the entire game I think, unless you win it in those mini-games and then can select it in your inventory. The hammers can destroy virtually anything, and you can also crouch and become immune to enemy fireballs because of the shell. I remember also being so sad when I got hit and lost it. Wish there was a way to cheat and always wear it permanently
I think they should nerf it and have it more or less similar to the Boomerang powerup's abilities, btw if you wanna play with the hammer bros suit, I suggest you play the Newer Super Mario Bros fan games
Nothing in that castle is harder than the two ghost head conveyor belt with oscillating fire balls and a huge bed of spikes that you must get a running leap across in the castle on World 6. I mean..................... wtf It's hilarious to me that small kids played this game.
I just got all the way to Bowser with a hammer Bros suit but got hit by a fireball right before the last room. I was so pissed and had to come here and see what would happen. Now I'm even more disappointed.

I believe the Hammer Suit and the Invincibility Star are the only items that can defeat that annoying sun that flies across the screen.
