Thats 2 things I need to do more, is one find a reason to use my plane, and 2 have more compartments for small items rather then just have them dumped in a drawer. Toolbox looks so far so good.
One possible improvement could be to make the pencil pocket shallower so you can fish it as you sharpen it shorter. Since you glued it already, you might need to drop in a filler stick or a pull up pocket on a string.
Cody, wonderful and inspiring job on the wood-working tool-box. It reminds me of when I made a wooden box (with integral lid) for my Spouse’s car, so that she could keep an emergency kit in the trunk of her car. I made the box out of one-inch thick furniture-grade plywood (this was back about 1988, so I can’t remember the type of wood used ... except that it was made of a “Hard-wood”). My box was made slightly differently in that instead of dove-tail joinery on the corners, I used a power router to make a 1/4 inch inside rabbet joints along all of the insides of the emergency tool-box panels. It was very difficult because at that time I was just beginning to learn wood-working. Although it turned-out very well (i.e., my Spouse still has it in the trunk of her car), if I were to do it all over again today, I would most certainly use dove-tail joinery. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experiences in wood-working. All the best to you and to yours. Semper Fi.
This very question occurred to me too... I sharpen my pencil all the time, reckon I would just put in a prop... or keep my pencil somewhere else perhaps.
I can't express how gratifying it is to watch your channel. In short, watching your earlier videos, I wasn't quite sure how I would enjoy watching a mans attempts at "trying" new things. Whether succeeding or failing, I have to admit I admire your commitment. I find that very thing is the reason I watch every video you put out. You not only show your commitment to your abilities, winning or less winning lol in woodworking but you show that same practice into your family. I love your Manly Manners as well as your common thoughts. Your channel is quite thought provoking and I love that it is done in a non-perfect way. Life isn't perfect, at least not mine. Lol. But having the will to prove to others that no matter how good you are, there is always room to be humble and respect things for what they are and will become. I do hate that you've been challenged by RUclips. I sincerely hope that you and your wonderful family will be able to weather the storm. I look forward to more videos and new thoughts. Hang in there and thank you for the time you spend on and for us.
Love watching this build. Reminds me so much of both my Grandfather and my Dad as they both were Woodworkers (among other things). My dad still likes to work even though he is 83, and still has his knack at making the wood talk...
Our whole family (my husband and I plus our two sons 2yrs. and 4 yrs.) watches your channel and we love it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and just for being so real and authentic. It’s not an easy thing to put your life on display and to share your faith in such a public way. But you, Mrs. W, and Jack do it in such a delightful way that it is something that I want to expose my children to, even at such a young age. I really can’t say enough good things so I’ll stop here. (Also, I love your book. It’s been a great encourage as we transition to our goal of homesteading full time.) And, I would love to be gifted the common man’s toolbox. Ok. 😊 I’m really done now. Thanks again and God bless!
I really love this tool box, it really helps a ton of people who want to ask, and/or have asked the question of how to get started, and on a low budget! I haven't seen you use a card scraper, but it's a great tool for budget minded woodworking!
It's nice to see the toolbox taking shape. The organizer looks very sharp. I think I'll have to do this with my son and daughter when they are old enough. Sort of a right of passage for them. Great video Cody!!
I started with your video on making the Top Bar Hive, and have been buzzing around the channel ever since. Attempting to soak up all the knowledge I can. You've truly inspired me.
Cody, I love your channel and I'm amazed how much better you've gotten at woodworking in the past few years. I'm currently building a workbench very similar to yours. 2x6 southern yellow pine. Beautiful tool tote!
This series has been a pleasure to watch. Everyone enjoys high quality items, but there is an extra special pleasure in seeing tools that punch above their weight class, and are affordable for the common man. I'd love to see a part 2 where you cover more tools for a general shop that are a great value for budget conscious tinkerers, woodworkers, DIY-ers, etc...
I love the workmanship of real craftsman and the old tools of the trade. This reminds me of my granddads old carpentry box.Cant wait to see the finished product. Thanks for sharing so much with us. Happy belated birthday sir
I've learnt so much even just watching how you clamp the box in order to plane it, thank you. I didn't have either granddad alive to teach me their skills, your teaching is making up for it. God bless.
I've really enjoyed this whole series of videos. It shows all of us that you can be a craftsman without spending a lot of money. Building the dovetail tool box with these tools really solidifies that point.
A project me and my brother have been eyeing for years has been to build us a small sail skiff to take out on the lake and do a bit of fishing from or just sailing. I have enough carpentry skills from general construction to build it but the man who taught me those skills was a craftsman. He learned from some old wood worker and he had a similar "grip" he called it with all his old tools in it. He taught me to rework some old doors on an old church that had not a single nail in it. Those doors must have been 200 pounds a piece and it took me a week to get all the old paint and glue off. When I was done restoring them and rehung the doors it was one of the proudest moments in my life. Very different from the usual house remodel we usually worked on. Sunday morning he woke me up early as the chicken crows and we grabbed coffee and parked the work truck across the street from that church. As people arrived they were used to the old draggy doors and almost killed themselves when they swung those big doors open so easily. A deacon came out and opened them for people after a moment. I'll never forget that morning. When my brother hit me up about the boat that memory popped back up and has been nagging me. I have always been a tinkerer but after seeing this budget box coming together I told my wife I'm going to build it and perhaps apply some of that knowledge passed down to me instead of the power tool carpenter I am. Maybe the patience I lack with woodworking can be learned as I work towards the day me and my brother start that boat. I hope after you finish this project Cody you find something similar because this has been a very inspiring series!
Very nice job on the dovetails! And I love those clamps! The project is coming along nicely. One idea is to put a spacer block down in the pencil hole, so it won't drop in too far when it has been sharpened and is shorter. Thanks for the video.
greatly enjoy watching you work, helps to relax. Best therapy a man or woman can get is working with their hands and building. watching another's creation process is a close second. I hope we get to see more of them
I'd never though much of using chisels in the past. Always thought they would be easily replaced by a router or table saw. But this really shows the versatility and flexibility of using a chisel.
Nice work highlighting the clamps and helping the maker get the word out. I'd purchase some of those clamps if their was a way. Great work on those dovetails, your skills are improving tremendously.
Incredible work on that Cody. Your patience and persistence to get things perfect has always amazed me. One word comes to mind, after all the years of your videos, and that is "proper". Thanks so much Cody and God bless.
this toolbox and set of tools would be a blessing to anyone who wanted to start wood working. I would be very proud of it and would be honored to use it. I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!
Been watching for a long time, great work. This channel has really has been the reason why I have decided to start woodworking :) Wranglestar and Paul Sellers have been my inspiration. This would be a great small starter project, now to start picking up these tools and getting to work
What a great series of videos so far Cody, this is exactly the type of thing I was looking for when i started looking up wood working videos, your channel and your own personality are excellent as well as your projects are very much appreciated, looking forward to many more series' and learning more along with all the other viewers!
love those clamps!!!! I like the chisles holders as well. I didn't realize the tools were gonna stick up above the sides like that but I really like where this is going.
Mesmerizing and calming to watch Wranglerstar at work in the woodshop. Awesome! And maybe I might get the tools! LOL! Thanks for all your great videos and work, Wranglerstar! Keep it up!
Wow! I didn't get notified of this video and missed seeing the conclusion of the making of the common man's tool Kit. So glad I found it. that's such a great idea to hold the chisels. Looks so good.
Can't believe how well that "cheap" plane works. Once you placed the chisel butcher block holder up against the tool box one could see how this thing was starting to come together. It really looks good man. The craftsmanship of just that one holder plus the planing on the dovetails is so good. BTW those clamps are beautiful.
Cody, God has given you such a gift, you are patient teacher of your skills, from wood working, to family values. I just love watching your videos, you are such an inspiration. Your tool box is amazing and anyone would love to have it. God bless you and your family.
The entire concept of this tool box is fantastic. From the tool reviews to the box build videos. A lot of work on your part. Can't wait to see the finished product!
The project is coming together. You are doing a great job. Agree that you need to rethink the pencil holder. Once sharpened it will be difficult to get it out. Stick a hatpin in the end of the woodgrain of the pencil to fish it out. By the time the pencil is too short to fish it out with the hatpin, the pencil is unusable. Cant wait for updates. Interesting seeing how lifestyle is in the North. I am in Cape Town South Africa and have yet to experience a snowfall.
Great video series. I love the clamps. I'm regularly checking for up dates. Keep up the great work. You have certainly inspired me to do a few projects and learn new skills. My axe of my grandads is the sharpest it's been for years. Cheers
I have just recently subscribed to your channel, but i can tell you i have spent hours going back and watching all of your videos! I love what you do, and believe wholeheartedly in it. Hard work and dedication, and doing the right thing it seems is something that is becoming a thing of the past. What a shame, what an embarrassment for our great country we all live in. The things you teach your son, Jack, are things i hope to teach my son(he is due to arrive in this word on the 4th of July!). My wife and i have just bought us a small 6 acre piece of land surrounded by a bicentennial farm, in Ida Michigan, we hope to turn into our little homestead! Cattle and hogs coming this fall! Anyways, you have become an inspiration for me, thank you for that, and i look forward to continuing to watch and learn and pass on the knowledge that you have given us all to the generations to come! God bless!
The toolkit is turning out great, can't wait to see the finished product! I'll be honest, I'm very impressed by how well that plane is working-and for $18 now that's perfect for the kit. Looking forward to seeing the controlled burn as well!
Coming along nicely. The "butcher block" for the tools I thought was quite clever. Hadn't heard yet that you also check out the samurai carpenter. That's awesome. He does amazing work.
Great video..... I really felt your enthusiasm in your work, it has inspired me to re-furbish all my old inherited tools and enjoy them as I never thought I would. I hope your videos stay on youtube long after I have gone so that my grand children can enjoy them and be inspired by them as I have. Who knows, they may even learn to look after, enjoy and use my tools when I'm gone. Your inspiration could go on living for generations to come. As you would say: - "Well would you look at that.... how beautiful is that".
I hope that whomever receives this blessing of a toolbox will use it to its fullest potential. I've been watching your channel for a couple weeks now and I got to tell you Cody, this is the best channel on youtube for homesteading in the US. This toolbox will be outstanding and I plan on watching it carefully and closely. Keep up the good work and you and your family will absolutely be in my prayers. God bless!
Looks like it is coming together nicely. I have been enjoying the nice mix of videos from the wood shop and the forest with some and a little tractor thrown in the mix...what more could we ask for? Keep up the good work!
Great to see more on the series, The Pencil holder needs a modification, once it gets smaller you won't be able to put it in the holder. How many more tools are you planning to add?
Looking great! I just gor the Stanley Mini Block Plane and so far I got to use it on one project and its great! But I never would have been willing to buy cheaper planes if it wasn't for this series! I plan to buy the Bench Plane and the regular Block Plane. Thanks!
My husband and I really enjoy your channel. He has learned a lot! We have our fingers crossed for this tool kit, or will just have to make one ourself.
Just want to wish you a hap pl y birthday! Started watching the common mans took kit series the other day a land I must say I am really enjoying it. I'm looking to get Into some wood working and your guidance is helping g me make some decisions and I love your channel. What a coincidence that I happened to watch this one on your birthday a year later...... well now you got me hooked over subscribed. Not sure if the giveaway is still going on but I'd love to entered if it is. Once again HAPPY BIRYHDAY WRANGLERSTAR! Enjoy your day
I can't express how delighted I would be to receive that wood working tools box complete with wranglerstar pencil. However, if somehow it does not find its way to me, I would still love to have a pencil. I will make the rest come to life. Outstanding video.
I'm really enjoying this project! It's great to see what can be accomplished without a huge amount of money, especially if you're just starting out. This toolkit shows that effort and hard work can make up for a lack of funds, and that you can still have tools and a box that you can be proud of.
I noticed you used some squeeze clamps, and found them wanting. I purchased a very similar item, I am sure it was rebranded, and I also found it does not clamp very tightly at all, Only good for light work I think, the screw clamps you used are a far better recommendation. - nice box!
Been following this common man's tool kit since you started it--what a great concept. Do you have a list of items you are using anywhere? Can't seem to find a complete list in the videos.
Those dovetails really turned out well for someone that hasn't done too many. I wish mine would be half as good. I love your workshop videos. Thank you.
It's turning out great. Do you have an old hand router plane? I found one the other day, I had to look it up to see what it was as it looked like a large spokeshave, but I wonder if it would have worked to make those cutouts as well.
I've been so happy with this series, I've bought the Chinese pullsaw but that's all I've been able to afford at this point. I would be so happy and honor this toolbox and use it often
This has been a great project and I have enjoyed following along. I wish I had more of your patience to truly enjoy woodworking more. I have a tendency to race to get things done. A wise man once said it should be more about the journey than the destination. Need to heed that more. Thanks for sharing your life.
My first plane was the SB4, It's fussy to set the depth, but it works. I like the dedicated pockets for the chisels, though I might have added a stop to contact the bevel instead of the edge bottoming out, and my luck I'd sharpen the pencil too may times and have to turn the box over to get it out. :)
THE STANLEY BENCH PLANE I USED IN THIS VIDEO IS ON SALE - ONLY $18 - Get Yours Now goo.gl/phzgEA
Wranglerstar happy late birthday !
Wranglerstar I second the fizz
nice tool set and tool box for sure and happy late birthay
Wranglerstar nice work! I want
awsome job on the tool box coming along great! I'd love those tools.
Thats 2 things I need to do more, is one find a reason to use my plane, and 2 have more compartments for small items rather then just have them dumped in a drawer. Toolbox looks so far so good.
dwoodog thinking the same thing...
You need a "stop" built in for the pencil, since it will get shorter over time. Happy belated birthday!
Daniel Kephart yea thats true
Drilling a lanyard (or crosspeg) hole in the pencil would be easier...
lol, I should have read comments before commenting
maybe figure a spring loaded deal?
Fine point you have there
One possible improvement could be to make the pencil pocket shallower so you can fish it as you sharpen it shorter. Since you glued it already, you might need to drop in a filler stick or a pull up pocket on a string.
Miguel Ángel Simón Fernández great idea
I like the pull up string idea.
lanyard on the pencil, pocket knife style
Miguel Ángel Simón Fernández. You could use a rubberband around the pencil to act as a stopper.
i was thinking the same thing... a pencil is going to get shorter, perhaps drop a piece of foam in that can be removed if needed.
Those clamps are a work of art!
vern johnson my thoughts exactly
what happens when the pencil gets smaller you should have it not cut the slot all the way down
Then the box becomes a time capsule
LOL Cody
This very question occurred to me too... I sharpen my pencil all the time, reckon I would just put in a prop... or keep my pencil somewhere else perhaps.
Gayle McArthur has the solution for that. see his comment
Little piece of dowel rod
on the clamps, to get the square holes he used a square drill bit of course!😎
I can't express how gratifying it is to watch your channel. In short, watching your earlier videos, I wasn't quite sure how I would enjoy watching a mans attempts at "trying" new things. Whether succeeding or failing, I have to admit I admire your commitment. I find that very thing is the reason I watch every video you put out. If I were to win, I'd just like a few of the pencils! Give the box and tools to a young guy!
all i hope is the winner uses them and it turns into a craft hobie maybe even a profession. got to start somewhere
*edit ...or gal...
+South Efrikan Yeah sure...
Love watching this build. Reminds me so much of both my Grandfather and my Dad as they both were Woodworkers (among other things). My dad still likes to work even though he is 83, and still has his knack at making the wood talk...

I'd love to see a part 2 where you cover more tools for a general shop that are a great value for budget conscious tinkerers, woodworkers, DIY-ers, etc...

I love seeing how much you appreciate the old fashioned art of woodworking!
Mesmerizing and calming to watch Wranglerstar at work in the woodshop. Awesome! And maybe I might get the tools! LOL!
Thanks for all your great videos and work, Wranglerstar! Keep it up!
Love this series. The contrast of woods on the joints really adds to it. Great Job!!
Wow! I didn't get notified of this video and missed seeing the conclusion of the making of the common man's tool Kit. So glad I found it. that's such a great idea to hold the chisels. Looks so good.
Love everything you do. Also love the clamps a true work of art.

That chisel block was such a good idea. That toolbox is beautiful! I love the contrast that the end grain gives you.
Great video series. I love the clamps. I'm regularly checking for up dates.
Keep up the great work. You have certainly inspired me to do a few projects and learn new skills. My axe of my grandads is the sharpest it's been for years.
Cheers
I love that you got your glue up table all set up and then did most of the glue process on your workbench, definitely something I would do :)
I appreciate your craftsmanship. Your attention to detail is wonderful. I'm really enjoying watching you build the tool box.
Thank you Robert.
I'm digging the kit, I've even began restoring my grandpa's old bench plane. Thanks for inspiring on so many projects.
I cant wait to see this project finished. Im just getting started in woodworking and may have to add this to my project list.
I have just recently subscribed to your channel, but i can tell you i have spent hours going back and watching all of your videos! I love what you do, and believe wholeheartedly in it. Looking forward to seeing the controlled burn as well!
The workmanship on those clamps is just phenomenal. Absolutely stunning
Coming along nicely. The "butcher block" for the tools I thought was quite clever. Hadn't heard yet that you also check out the samurai carpenter. That's awesome. He does amazing work.
Beautiful toolbox Cody. I especially like how well the chisel holder fit the tools.
Very nice work Cody, I also really enjoyed the forest planting videos! Keep em coming!!
I really love the idea of the butcher block for the chisels!! Thanks for all your hard work!!
The box is really looking good. And those handmade clamps are absolutely awesome!
You've done a great job on this box so far! It will make a great addition to anyone's bench!
Keep up the good work. It has been really neat seeing this kit come together.
I'm glad you went with the "knife block" style of layout tool storage. I mentioned it in a past video and I'm glad you saw it!
Nice progress on the toolbox! I like how you're organizing the tools!
The hand made clamps are amazing! Nice work on the box.
We enjoy watching your videos as a family and learn much from this family friendly channel. THANKS
Really enjoying this build. Thanks Cody!
Pretty impressed with that plane. Nice project and thanks.
Great video..... I really felt your enthusiasm in your work, it has inspired me to re-furbish all my old inherited tools and enjoy them as I never thought I would.

Beautiful! Loveing this series.
Are the clamps included in the kit? If not, what clamps would you suggest for the beginner?
Those clamps are incredible! Serious craftsmanship there!
this tool box is turning out great! Thank you for giving us all a way to get into wood working!
Looks like it is coming together nicely. I have been enjoying the nice mix of videos from the wood shop and the forest with some and a little tractor thrown in the mix...what more could we ask for? Keep up the good work!
Great to see more on the series,
The Pencil holder needs a modification, once it gets smaller you won't be able to put it in the holder.
How many more tools are you planning to add?
I love your chisel holder in the box, they look like they're held so well!
really enjoyed watching the toolbox come together!
Really great stuff. Cool idea on the butcher block. Also, those clamps are gorgeous!
The joints are beautiful!
Enjoy your day
Cant wait to see the finished product! You do such detailed work🌻
I can't express how delighted I would be to receive that wood working tools box complete with wranglerstar pencil. However, if somehow it does not find its way to me, I would still love to have a pencil. I will make the rest come to life. Outstanding video.
Really like the chisel storage idea! and those clamps are works of art.
I'm really enjoying this project! It's great to see what can be accomplished without a huge amount of money, especially if you're just starting out. This toolkit shows that effort and hard work can make up for a lack of funds, and that you can still have tools and a box that you can be proud of.
Congrats on the plane! Awesome birthday gift.
The project is coming along nicely and those wooden clamps give me the fizz they are Gorgeous.
Those dovetails really turned out well for someone that hasn't done too many. I wish mine would be half as good. I love your workshop videos. Thank you.
What an outstanding kit. Someone will be very pleased. I've enjoyed watching you build it.
It's turning out great. Do you have an old hand router plane? I found one the other day, I had to look it up to see what it was as it looked like a large spokeshave, but I wonder if it would have worked to make those cutouts as well.
Really enjoying this build. Looking forward to the end result.
Every time I watch your videos, it inspires me to go out into the shop and work with my hands. Keep the videos coming!
Looking really nice. Can't wait to see it completed.
Great craftsmanship! Keep up the good work.
I've been so happy with this series, I've bought the Chinese pullsaw but that's all I've been able to afford at this point. I would be so happy and honor this toolbox and use it often
What a great looking toolbox! I'd love a chance to use those tools and start my woodworking journey!
This has been a great project and I have enjoyed following along. I wish I had more of your patience to truly enjoy woodworking more. I have a tendency to race to get things done. A wise man once said it should be more about the journey than the destination. Need to heed that more. Thanks for sharing your life.
I really like how you demonstrate the use of a plane to finish up your corner joints.
