“I think that 2016 makeup was more about how the makeup looked, and 2020 makeup is more about how the makeup makes your face look.” That’s SO accurate.
I wish people did their makeup to suit their own personal features rather than copy whatever's trending. Like, some people look STUNNING with their big, round doe eyes but feel the need to have "snatched" "fox eyes". Some people even feel the need to get surgery to meet the temporary standard. Trends can be toxic sometimes.
exactly like some ppl w close set eyes do the inner corner eyeliner thing like yes u can do what u like, but its j gonna make ur eyes look EVEN CLOSER TOGETHER. my eyes are kinda close set so youll only see me doing highlight in the inner corners even tho its not "trending" anymore. and my eyes are already long which i dont like as much so i try to make them look rounder cause it suits my face more. so like for me its not abt doing trends, its abt what looks better on my face
So true! It's also like that with eyebrows. Eyebrows are such a personal thing, there isn't any shape/thickness that will suit everyone's face. When thin eyebrows were a thing, everyone was plucking the heck out of their eyebrows, even the people that looked better with fuller brows. Now that fuller brows are trendy, even people that look better with thinner brows have full brows. Nina Dobrev is a great example of a person who just doesn't suit the big brows as much as the thinner ones. By following trends and not going for what looks best on us, we just end up not looking like the best version of ourselves. It's perfectly fine to try new things. Of course, we can't know if something suits us if we don't try it. But imo, you should always go back to the thing that you felt looked best on you, regardless of what's trending.
@@nuggetpie8711 i agree since my eyebrows have always been on the thicker side i try not to make them too thin cause i already know it wouldn't look good. even if thin eyebrows were trending i wouldnt change them.
it was mostly kim tbh. the « 2016 makeup » is actually the 2012-2017 makeup, and it was inspired by kim. heavy contouring, huge dark brows, matte lips, nude colors. kylie just kinda started the big lips obsession.
I love how you didn’t purposely over exaggerate the 2016 /“what not to do” side like other people do. It was realistic and reminded me exactly of how we did our makeup in 2016!
Cary Dolly I think she’s saying that over time and practice you notice the little things that sometimes make a big difference when you want it to look really nice lol
Am I the only one who doesn’t see that big of a difference? Also, I think your 2020 lashes contradict the foxy lifted face, it makes that side lowered down and not as lifted
Same. I think false lashes can do that. That’s why when I wear them, I only put them on the edge and outer corner of my eye so they give a lift instead of bringing my eye down.
Pretty Rat Oh I don’t think they were saying it looks bad or anything. Just that it’s not a fox eye look when the lashes are making the eye look droopy.
The thing with this makeups is that the left side (2016) heavy ass makeup looked great in camera bc it was made for it, but 2020 makeup looks really cute in person too. 2016 was like a mask
I love how you can see the difference in her eye shape based on her makeup. the 2016 side had a very round eye shape while 2020 had a very sharp, almond shape. It's brilliant.
Its so funny you think the left is so bad now. But I’m about 5 years older and my teen makeup was pretty tragic. Gen z is so lucky, you got to skip the awkward stage of everything.
I think both look equally nice except for the cut crease which I have never liked. I would probably just wear different ones for different days lol. of course it helps that Leah is gorgeous

I really like the comparison. As someone that still loves cut crease, I agree 100% that right now the makeup is more about enhancing features. Rather than 2015, that was a bit of copying everybody else. I mean, now we know better about skin makeup, more natural products and doing what suits you best, not mimicking whatever the trendiest beauty guru is applying and doing skin that only looks good on camera. I can recall back in the day, that the cut crease was used for almost everything and going everywhere super glammed up. Now I know how to use different makeups for different ocassions. Love the video! It had been a long way.
I think 2016 was pushed by those of us who were 17-19 on Instagram, now we’re in our early 20s and grown into adults so the makeup is more sophisticated lol
I actually like both sides lol...but the biggest difference for me (besides the gorgeous blush on the 2020 side) is that your eye looks so much bigger and open on the 2016 side. You look beautiful both ways in my opinion!!
almost no difference. In 5 years everyone would be like "how could I use a brush for this?" and "that looked not natural. Look, I'm a clown!". My feels.
Maybe the next trend should be learning to do makeup to best suit each of our individual faces and colouring! I remember when palettes used to have different eye look examples for different eye shapes, etc. maybe I’m just that old haha. I’d love that for 2021!! Bring back facial placement cards !!
All the insta baddies I watch on RUclips still do their makeup exactly like “ 2016” and I like the look a lot I feel like the “2020” look is more for girls that just like doing natural looks in general

honestly seeing them next to each other, the fox eye look is actually way more noticeable than when you look at a fox eye look.. you can actually see the difference it makes for once in this video!
no-one in the advertising/fashion industry did makeup like the 2016 side. that was strictly just beauty social media influencers. Now in 2020 the advertising industry and social media have become much more integrated which I think is another reason why the makeup now is more natural and also why the fashion industry has adopted 'instagram makeup' whereas they always looked their nose down at it before. I personally love the 2020 look but I NEVER used to do the cut creases, the tape eyeliner or those blocky brows and no professional makeup artists i ever worked with on shoots did either. the contouring and highlighting of 2016 though, I am grateful for that cos it's been a game changer. We never did that before instagram.
I’d say that the 2016 side looks more lifted because taping to put eyeshadow on really enhances the lifted eye look, and the 2020 side is more of a “natural” look, either way both sides are beautiful imo!

I think it’s also because of the way she put on her blush and contour on the 2020 side. It makes the top of her cheek look bigger and more droopy, compared to the space underneath her cheekbone. That space is “too small” compared to the rest of her face.
