🇫🇷 3 Steps to Finally Understand Spoken French 🗣️
Are you struggling to understand spoken French? Then you are in the right spot! In this video, I've outlined three essential steps that will help you understand spoken French, and it's easier than you think! These steps apply not just to French but to any language-be it English, Spanish, or more.
🎙️ Step 1: Master French Sounds
One common oversight in language learning, especially in French, is not learning French pronunciation. Spoken and written French are like two different languages. In this video, I emphasize the importance of learning French sounds and pronunciation rules.
Check out my French pronunciation playlist if you need to learn French pronunciation: • French Pronunciation C...
📖 Step 2: Read and Listen Simultaneously
After mastering pronunciation, many attempt to understand spoken French directly from movies, but it's not that simple. Sponsored by Lingopie, this step explains the importance of reading and listening simultaneously.
💡 Why Read and Listen Together?
The goal is to sync sounds and spelling in your brain. Try the experiment-first, listen without subtitles, then read and listen simultaneously, and listen again without subtitles. Notice the improvement? Reading along enhances your understanding of spoken French.
📚 Step 3: Grasp French Sentence Structure
While grammar might not be everyone's favorite, understanding basic French sentence structure is crucial. You don't need perfect grammar; just understand how French works.

Merci Dylane, les conseils excellentes comme toujours. The only other tip I would suggest is repetition, repetition & repetition. I have found that when listening to a piece of fast spoken French a second or third time it almost sounds slowed down despite it being the exact same audio.

Skipping learning sounds (or not paying too much attention) was my big mistake I made one year ago, when I started learn french. I am still fixing this now, but thanks to Dylane's Pronuncation course I believe I am closing this gap. Thank you!

Thanks for another informative lesson. Your pronunciation course helped me tremendously. Very helpful. I keep watching your French chitchats to try to improve my listening skills. I'll follow your advice in Step 2. And your 30 day French challenge has challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. Thanks for all you do. Karen.

    Bonjour Dylane!
I have been using Duolingo and your videos to learn French for the past month, and I want to buy your books, but I will need to buy them one at a time. Could you please tell me in what order I should get them? I just finished the pronunciation videos, but I didn’t retain most of it, so I’m wanting to add hard copy education to help me learn long term.
Thank you for your videos and time! ~Marisha

I'm only three months into my journey and find I really need to spend time with grammer. I believe the idea that hammer is near bottom of priorities comes from the scenario where you are speaking to a native speaker. Sure they will be able to decided and correct what you are saying because they are experts in the language they can intuitively follow what you are trying to say. BUT if you want to understand them (or read) they are going to use your broken version of the language and you translating your vocabulary into the rules of English will confuse the help out of you
