      @Hyun Ahn Hi there. Thanks for watching and for your question.
      It sounds like you may be considering working psych at bedside? If so, you will likely find this experience to be invaluable if you are pursuing the route of PMHNP.
      I would give the advice of learning to improve skills of active listening and patience and to treat all with dignity and respect. This will help with therapeutic communication, and in my opinion, helped to de-escalate many situations while working on the unit.
      You may find it helpful to watch the video I did on "Good Skills to Have as a PMHNP." This can really apply to anyone working in the psych field.
      Please let me know if you have any other questions along the way! I don't have all of the answers, but I am definitely willing to share my perspective.

    I have my BSN, and currently work on a cardiac telemetry unit. Sometimes I work with patients who have mental health diagnosis like PTSD, GAD, alcohol or substance abuse withdrawals, schizophrenia, bipolar etc.
    I’m considering going to school for PMHNP. Do you think I should work in BHU first?

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP  3 года назад +2

      Hi. Thank you for your question. It sounds like you have some valuable mental health experience. While I believe there are some positives to working in BHU prior to applying, it is ultimately a personal decision. I have worked and attended program with some who never worked BHU. I personally found it helpful to work BHU to be more competitive for program (although not formally required at time of application), and to have hands-on experience with working with the population. My time on BHU also affirmed my decision to pursue PMHNP route. I hope this helps? Please let me know if there are any other questions I may be able to answer for you. I wish you the best on your journey in the near future!

      I am a new graduate RN who was let go from a Med Teli PCU unit for not progressing quickly enough. It was not the position for me. I had to change many briefs, on top of passing meds, charting, managing cardiac drips, contacting providers about status changes, and prepping patients for their treatments and diagnostic tests. I was literally pulled in many directions at once. I am still a new grad and I am hoping to get into a smaller hospital in the ER setting in another new grad program. I am also very good at school so getting my master’s degrees is something that I will be pursing after a year of experience so I am trying to decide on an NP specialty. I’m so torn because I don’t want to get snuck in one specific specialty if I decide to switch later on. That’s why I may want to do FNP.

      This sounds like there was a lot to manage for anyone! I hope you haven’t gotten too discouraged this early on, since there are so many options!
      If you think you may want to switch later, I would recommend FNP (if you go the NP route). While I love my role as a PMHNP and there are so many opportunities, it is a bit more limited compared to an FNP. My sister has been an FNP for 5 years, and she loves it. Opportunities are also endless. Many FNPs also practice in psychiatry.
      My hope is that you find your niche and go after what you’re passionate about.

      @@CamelliaDThePsychNP I am not discouraged I am actually relieved because I signed a 2 year contract with this company but since I was let go I don’t own them any money as opposed to if I quit I would have to owe them 10k and be potentially put on a do not hire list for this organization. Today I already spoke with a new recruiter and was sent some places that could be a better fit for me.
      I am also a liscenced esthetician with laser experience and other skin care treatment experience who is looking to get better with cosmetic injectables so that is why FNP may be a better fit for me especially if I ever decide to leave healthcare and just do skincare instead.
      Definitely lots of choices to consider as a new grad RN. In a way I am glad that I found out early that Med Surge in a large hospital organization is not the right fit for me and the mangers on my unit even stated that even experienced nurses have a hard time on this particular unit.

    Thanks for the video Camelia. I have a BA in Psychology and am in a BSN program and hope to get experience in the ER before pursuing a PMHNP.
    Quick question about the reality of day to day work as a PMHNP.
    Is it mainly medication titration, or can you also provide therapy? I've heard that most have their days filled with 30 minute med checks but wasn't sure if this was true across the board.
    Also, is the market saturated in more desirable locations?
    Thanks again!

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP
      @CamelliaDThePsychNP  3 года назад +4

      Hi Greg. Thank you for your comment and questions.
      Congratulations on your achievements thus far! Welcome to nursing!
      The PMHNP role can include medication management and psychotherapy, but it really depends on preparation from program and individual preference. Some PMHNP programs do not emphasize psychotherapy and some don't feel equipped to do so after graduation. That's when it becomes an individual decision on what you are comfortable with. Some facilities do look for PMHNPs to do med management only.
      As of now, I have not found saturation with this role. There has always been a demand, regardless of setting in my area. This may also depend on geographical location.
      I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any additional questions/concerns that I may be able to answer.

      @FutureRN Singh
      First, congratulations on what you have achieved on your nursing journey thus far!
      Thanks for your question. While I understand your concerns around safety, the propensity for safety issues actually occurring are usually much lower in reality.
      However, you can work with patients with various diagnoses on any platform. If you desire to work with such diagnoses of depression and anxiety only, private practice and/or telepsych will likely give you such opportunities. In most instances, psychosis is a condition that is not treated by telespsych. In private practice, you have much more autonomy with the patient population you work with.
      I hope this helps and I wish you the best. Feel free to stay engaged here.

      @Heather Bieber
      Thanks for your comment and question.
      Yes, you can absolutely get additional training for psychotherapy and there are many avenues for this. Some PMHNP programs put more focus here than others.
      The PMHNP job role can be inclusive of both med management and psychotherapy, but this relies heavily on each job organization.

    Hi I'm an ED nurse at a hospital that has heavy psychiatric patient volume. I've got into some scary situations with aggressive and violent patients and have felt that our security was simply not enough in these instances. I have a desire to become a PMHNP but one thing that keeps playing over in my mind before applying to school is the fear for my own safety as a PMHNP. I want to help people in a more meaningful way by becoming a PMHNP but I also don't want to get hurt. Any thoughts?

    • @CamelliaDThePsychNP

      Hi Ashley.
      First, thank you for the work you do in the ED!
      I currently work in the BH ED as a PMHNP and know the nature of escalation that can occur in that setting. This also held some truth with my time in inpatient behavioral health. Therefore, I did have a similar concern based on my perspective and experience in those settings. However, this has not been as much of a concern as I initially imagined. Your role as a PMHNP would be slightly different than working "at the bedside," as an RN. Things can also look much different in the outpatient setting. Everyone has to travel their own road and make decisions based on many individual factors, but I would encourage you to continue considering if this is the only thing that would deter you. There are so many options!
      I hope this helps and I wish you the best on your journey. Please let me know if I may answer any other questions that you may have along the way.

Although not applicable to all patients when patient condition warrants in-person care, it is being used in the mental health field across all settings. This includes acute care/ED/inpatient, outpatient, etc. You are also correct in that you can work with different hospitals and provide care across fair distances, including in another city (if patient resides in clinician's licensed state).
