- Formerly a summer resort of the British Raj, the city of Darjeeling is a confluence of cultures. It is a gorgeous hill station with breathtaking natural beauty, magnificent colonial architecture and joyful way of life. This episode brings you an immersive food tour from this place that we had undertaken with our hosts Nikhil and Ujjawal. Nikhil is a licensed tour leader and adventure enthusiast while Ujjawal is a painter, musician and entrepreneur.
The first stop of the tour was Kunga restaurant. It is a favourite of those who prefer Tibetan and Nepali cuisines. The place was jam packed when we reached there and that is a testimony of its huge popularity. Here we polished off a comforting bowl of chicken thenthuk and a plate of steamed chicken momo.
Next we went to Bhola Aalu dum to try one of the most quintessential Darjeeling street food that is aalu dum. Bhola is believed to be the pioneer of this bright orangish red potato curry that is served with a wide range of munchies. We opted for the finger chips and aalu dum combo. For Nikhil is not just any food but an emotion because he has grown up loving it and has so many memories attached to it. We too loved this aalu mimi which had fried noodles in it as well.
The third stop was Walis Bakery from where we picked up some wheel pop and puffs to be enjoyed with tea. It is an old bakery cum confectionery frequented by the locals for their snacks stocks.
The fourth stop was Narayan Das, a renowned sweet shop where we had a refreshing cup of Darjeeling tea along with the puffs. Over this energizing cup, we got to know a slice of Darjeeling's history from Nikhil, who had all the anecdotes on his fingertips.
After this we went to Kapil Chaat whose aalu chaat is a hot favourite with the locals. It is a potpourri of ketchup based aalu dum, chips, sev, peanuts, chutney, yogurt etc. The result was a zesty, sweet and sour dish that brings smiles on people's faces.
Next we had a paan and then reached Ismail restaurant to savour some Mughali dishes. The homestyle chicken keema that we tried was mild on spices and delicious.
After this Nikhil exited the tour and we continued it with Ujjawal. First he took us to Beni's cafe which is an old favourite. The place still radiates an old world vibe. Here we just had some tea and a kala jamun each because we had few more places to visit.
Next we reached Santosh Aalu dum stall to enjoy a plate of aalu bhunja. It was once associated with Beni's cafe. The dish was somewhat similar to the chaat we had at Kapil minus the ketchup and chutney things. We really liked its warm, spicy and crunchy taste. Santosh ji was very genial and patient.
From there we went to Joey's Pub to unwind over some beer. We really enjoyed the less noisy and laid back ambience of this place.
Finally we ended the tour with some dal roti based dinner at Hotel Lunnar because it being late in the night, there weren't much options available. Overall we had a great time that day.

Nikhil has very good knowledge of Darjeeling history. It seemed as if he was giving a UPSC interview when he fluently told all the names of personalities and dates.

Anubhav जी, Darjeeling for me is not just a hill station --- it is an emotion, it is history, it is bliss , it is unique and it is a new experience every time I go there ( I have lost count of how many times I've been). Some observations:- 1. It was really lovely to see places like Bhola , Narayan Das , Walis, Islamia, Beni's , Santosh etc being featured. 2. Kunga is iconic -- small , cramped but such good authentic food.👍 The lady owner Chimme's mother used to cook herself a few years earlier .....her preparations were pure magic !! Apart from the Tibetian food , their Ginger Honey Lemon Tea is fantastic. 2. Joeys Pub in which you went has been rebuilt and modernised to suit the current demand. Earlier it had an old world charm when Puran ji was alive. I have not stepped into the new Joeys after the sad passing of Puran ji about 5-6 yrs ago -- he was not only the owner of the pub but a musician too -- a fantastic guitarist. 3. Waiting for the next episode which would probably be on DHR, Keventers, probably Penang , lots of Street food including the Phuchka walas near the Mahakal Market etc...4. Lunar Restaurant in the Hotel Dekeling building in my opinion is the best pure veg restaurant in Darjeeling...good you had dinner there. 5. Both your hosts were brilliant, it is people like Nikhil and Ujjwal who bring alive that unique character of Darjeeling....thanks to them. 👍👍👏👏 6. And in the end आपको भी तो हमको बहुत athi देना पड़ेगा....मतलब धन्यवाद!! 😀😀🤣
From jalpaiguri to kalimpong to Darjeeling, what a wonderful journey with scenic beauty and tasty dishes of the region. Thank you once again Anubhavji and team 😊🙏
Lots of love for all my brothers and sisters across Siliguri, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. Not to forget our brothers from UP and Bihar, who brave all odds and set up their lovely street food stalls all across the country! And Anubhav Bhai ke kya kehne👌👌

Kunga made me so emotional. Nothing beats Kunga as far as Tibetan food in India is concerned. I would love to see you step in Glenary's at least once. The ambience is truly awesome.
Coming from Bengal, I love how he passionately talks about Darjeeling. Indeed it has a special place in Modern history of India.

90 percent of biharis stay outside of bihar but if u say anything bad about bihar they get angry and they would tell bad about westbengal... where they are thriving their business
That's how you connect with people and know about their not just food about their culture , History is my favourite part.
I have studied in Darjeeling during my schooling days. Basically I was in a boarding school there(2005-2007). It was really a stroll down the memory lane and nostalgic for me to watch and cherish all those sweet memories and especially the food. Thanks Anubhav bhai, waise mai muzaffarpur se hi hun. You are doing a great job! Keep it up.

One thing is more notable that you must try tribal cuisines basically in deferent location in NE states. Our NE region is basically under Main race is Mongolian, as per linguistic variation people groups of here were divided as Tibeto Burman, Mon Khemer, Tai, Kuki chin etc....several tribes under each linguistic groups. Example: Great Tai groups has their 6 groups concentrating under NE as well as Assam as they called Tai Ahom, Tai khamti, Tai khakiyal, Tai khamiyang, Tai Torung, Tai Aiton...
Actually Bhola is the inventor of aludum which is world famous in Darjeeling.
