Should we have kept this fish? (Yes it was LEGAL) Swordfish Catch/Clean/Cook

- In this episode we head out for a daytime swordfish trip aboard the Broad Minded with Niles and his family and friends. On the second drift we hook up to a double header. The big one gets away but we tag and release a juvenile swordfish. A couple hours later we hook up to another double header and keep the first legal size fish for dinner and then are faced with a dilemma. Our third swordfish of the day was foul hooked and floating, so we had to make a decision whether to let it float for dead or bring it home (yes it was legal size). We make the more ethical decision and bring it back to the marina for dinner. Back on land we cook some fresh swordfish on the flattop grill while swimming in the pool!

Today they passed me by, I think I was going to 409 I am your number 1 fan someday there will be a video just like yours God bless you
It’s good to see you back on the water captain, hopefully your health continues to improve. I’m 37 and just had hip replaced and am binge watching your videos as I’m in my hospital room starting my recovery process.
Good luck with recovery! This video was shot in May, so before my most recent operation, but I’m hoping to be there very soon
dang can I ask what caused your hip to be replaced so young?
That’s a badass load up of fish… you are so calm about the trip lol I’d be fired up
👊🏻
Capt. Nick, Good to see you out on the big boat again 😊. You can alway tell when it a arm chair fisherman questioning why you didn’t let the legal fish go. They don’t have any idea about making the boat payment, paying for gas, bait, reels, rods, safety equipment, docking fees, maintenance and also the need try to let the paying customers not only have a good time but to go home with meat for the freezer so they will want to come back again. Good Job, good video keep them coming😊
You definitely made the right choice in keeping the floating fish. At least it was treated with respect and not discarded. There is far too much food wasted on this planet, so you are setting an excellent example in looking after it even in a small way. Well done Nick.
Thanks 👍
You’ve released 100’s if not 1000’s of legal fish you could have kept. Although it wouldn’t have gone to “waste” either way there’s no shame in keeping legal fish no matter what the situation is….
🙌🏻👊🏻
Releases are just fine we all have an overwhelming advantage and besides the catch was fun
Love the awesome content. Hope to have a commercial fishing charter as big as yours. Keep up the awesome hard work!!!!!!!
Thanks! Good luck 👊🏻
If it’s legal there’s no shame in keeping it. I’ve seen you tag and release a lot more legal fish than I can remember. You do your part for the health of the oceans so keeping a smaller legal fish has been more than earned in your case my brother. Just keep on doing what you do and we’ll keep in watching and wishing we was on that trip.
Just finished watching the cooking part of the video. I would eat up a whole steak. LOL. That pool looks real nice!!! Go Stanz fam!!! 😊🍻🍺
Hey Nick, another great show. Here’s a tip for you when you’re deep trough why natural rubber cushion over the area where the wait is coming up see you don’t have to worry about scratching or damaging your boat mechanics do it when they work on cars? I’m just saying.
Great tip!
The lighting and video quality is unlike anything I've seen before. Is National Geographic on your boat filming? This is beautiful! Wow!❤❤
Thanks for watching
😲👍🗡️ 🐟 Been a lil minute since I've seen a Stanz 🌊 🎥
Well done ,,,, good haul and great cook up, always like a basic salt n pepper cook, that way you are tasting the natural fish, without accompanying flavours
Thanks 👍
Can't wait to get back down there and go out again
🙌🏻
crazy that the two fish rapped up and it chaffed off the wind on. if there's any way to escape the swords will figure it out! buddy at the end is that guy at the party that had one to many and wont stfu!
I'm 60 years old and have been fishing off of the coast of SC all my life. At one time it was prohibited to keep swords at all. They've made a come back but still have a way to go. I believe the size limit is too low. Now having said that, if you have a paying customer and a legal fish, it's a tough call.
Agreed. It wouldn’t bother me at all if the minimum size was raised
@@StanzFam would a maximum size be a management tool? Or would this mean releasing/wasting dead fish?
Nick, if I’ve realized anything over the years, watching you and living vicariously through you, you are an ethical fisherman and I firmly believe that’s the case OFF camera as well(and Sarah would probably hurt you if you weren’t! 😬) 😂 Your dad raised you the right way! 👍
Legal swordfish are that small? A reg needs changing.
my name is Gerardo like your video nick god bless you my friend
Great feller's !! Be safe .
Thanks, will do!
Nick, looking better all the time! Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
GREAT VIDEO, ALWAYS ENTERTAINING, THIS WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT, I LIKED IT‼️🐠🐟 Vinny 🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it
Which is the best tide for swordfishing? High tide, low tide, rising tide or falling tide?
I don’t see a problem. If anyone complains then pin their comment to the top and let your other commenters have at it
What lake you fishing at? Lol
Nick, who was your best mate? Bean or Matt? Be honest. And don't consider harpooning skills because that wouldn't be fair to Bean. 🤣
Awesome video I know it was good getting out again
Thanks. This was back in May (pre early June surgery) , but it was a nice day for sure
Love the vids keep
It up man
If anything the more ethical path is to take smaller fish and leave the successful larger breeders to make more delicious eating size small ones so both those fish are a great option to keep (also the mercury levels in the smaller ones are going to be a lot lower). I'm not saying don't keep the larger fish as you have a business to run and nothing is wasted but certainly don't feel bad about boating small boys.
Pumpkin sword would be sweet 😊
👊🏻
If there is a limit of one per boat and it’s early, let it go. Late in the day, eat it. If you can take two or more per day. Coin toss or clients choice if legal.
It’s 1 per person up to 6 per boat on charters, but we rarely keep more than 2 . We try to self regulate a little, but if a second fish is dead or in bad shape that’s usually a determining factor
@@StanzFam I have noticed that the injured/ dead are kept. I like your philosophy
I would say if in doubt, let it go for another day, even though it was a legal fish.
I would keep a Wahoo for sushi, sushi, sushi!!! 🐟🍣🍣🍣
The fish looks Delicious!
So good
17:29 ... Trini for sure
Nick you’re the best
Hey Kevin ✌🏻
Great video Stanz!!!
Thanks for watching
Great video. Mahi and Sword 😋
Glad you enjoyed!
sardine fish tasty for me Sir
They need to change the size limit drastically it's criminal to keep them small fish like that I know that one died but there are people keep a little tiny fish they didn't even have a chance to breed yet
I’d like to see the minimum size increase too
I use avocado oil almost exclusively because it’s got such a mild flavor that it doesn’t influence whatever I’m cooking with it and it’s got a higher smoke point than olive oil. I was hooked immediately! Great vid!!
Good to know! Thanks for watching
@@StanzFam thanks for the vids! I’ve been trying to plan a vacay to stay in one of Bud & Mary’s houseboats but things keep getting in the way. Lol, you know..life happens. Anyway, thanks for putting out great content!
What the trips cost! If it’s legal is going home!!
Great video 👍🏼
Thanks 👍
Ethically you take the fish instead of it possibly suffering more than necessary.
🔥🔥
do you still sell boats? whats your thoughts on the 28 freeman?
I still sell boats. The 28 Freeman is an awesome boat for its size. More of a hybrid than an actual bay boat
If you don’t need it releasing is always a good thing.
100%
How do I get one of those sword fish pictures
Hey
The link is in the video description
let it GO.
Always love the but what’s the deal with the camera guy .
👍🙏👊,,love the video..
Thanks 👍
I would have released Nick and a BAD BOYZ filet and released taught by Charlie Scoble

Now he’s got the yellow fin shirt on after the hundred thousand dollars was set free but I got to give it to him nice Kitch if y’all don’t know what I’m talking about go to the next video before this one pretty bad ass bitch tuna 😢🇺🇸💯🙏🏼
I'd be embarrassed bringing in a swordfish that big to keep.
😂 it's a legal fish!!
If it's a keeper and it can't swim away by it self keep it eat it and appreciate
Wahoo 🐟 sushi 🍣🍣🍣 with 🥢 and some 🍻🍺
How many fish have you caught that already tagged? Does anyone report to you when a fish you have tagged is caught?
I have never caught a tagged one. I’ve probably had 20-25 recaptures reported of fish we have tagged previously
@@StanzFam that is pretty cool. I bet it is interesting to see where the recaptures happen. The closest thing I know of here on the Oregon coast is the albacore. A research group will pay anglers for the tags. I have never heard of anyone catching one though
cocanie was good today...yeah
I got my volume up high and I can't even hear you
Hmmm
MF Conehead. Tell him it's all the beer he drinks.
No
I think you should have kept it if it is legal a shark would eat that fish anyway
Love your videos but you talk so fast we can’t understand you
Sorry about that
He doesn't make any effort to make himself understood...
Why not what else would you do with it don't give it to the sharks
Keep talking and shot your face...dont show us the fish
I don’t like your attitude. Better check your tone 😎
Very cool video as always. Btw I went to Palmetto High with @kevin dodge
Thanks. Too funny! Small world
Today they passed me by, I think I was going to 409 I am your number 1 fan someday there will be a video just like yours God bless you
Capt Mike is out there today. Hope it was good fishing for everyone
I grew up in a time where if you caught it, you ate it. I’m getting up in age now and I see the strings of government tightening your freedom to catch fish and feed your family and neighbors. Something we did weekly.
Yeh, but in many places y'all decimated the fishery! Don't be greedy. Always practice conservation, especially if you love and respect the ocean.
@@chiphill4856 The sad part is the government has people believing fish populations are being decimated by a man with a pole and a hook. if there was any way a fishery was decimated it wasn’t from a man with a fishing pole. That’s not possible. The ocean is so vast it’s amazing. Then add the depth of that water and just think of the cubic feet. It’s mind boggling. Speckle trout lay 100,000 to 500,000 eggs every few days during spawning. That’s just an average. The larger ones release in the millions per week.
outstanding video nick im Waring the yellowfin shirt right now ahahaha
🙌🏻
Good eaten size
