  • Heather Whitestone 1995 Miss America talent. Very moving performance, all the more so because of her hearing impairment. Clearly Miss Whitestone never let that hold her back.

    I think that people may be missing the point. It isn't the fact that Heather Whitestone was the first deaf Miss America, or that there are better ballet dancers in professional ballet. The point is that she chose that particular song to display to the world her faith in God and her belief in what Jesus Christ did for all of us. If you notice her pose at the end of the song with her costume, you'll see that it represented Jesus on the cross. That's what people should remember!

    Obviously she had gone through so many obstacles just to get to the level in ballet she showed in this video. This is a pageant show and it's about all-rounded ladies, not professional ballerinas or singers or pianists. She might not be the best ballerina but definitely deserved the crown.

    This is the performance that won the title for my home state that year.. She was so amazing.. pageants in the 90's along with everything else were so much more emotional and thought out.. not like pageants of today and anything dealing with entertainment.. if a deaf woman can win a crown.. then it makes me feel that , me with all of my senses can make anything possible.. thank you Miss Whitestone,., and thank GOD I am a 90's child,,,

    She still had very, very vague hearing in her left ear. Just enough to be able to make out a noise from silence, really, is my understanding. Other than that, she just drilled the timing in all of her dance moves. Music can be played very loudly and felt through the floor. Her being able to pull it off so flawlessly at the pageant shows both her own perseverance and a remarkable dance instructor.

    OMG!! I remember watching this when it first aired. I loved it!!! I was so captivated by her performance. And I thought the song choice really made her performance
    even more amazing. Whoever said she won out of sympathy is diluted. She won cuz she was the best. It was truly an awe inspiring moment which is why she got such a lonf ovation. I remember so of the other performances and they were good but again she was the best .

    While some may dare to nitpick that she's not on par with the Bolshoi or the New York City Ballet (and I see some have), she sort of just has something here. A way that makes you just want to watch her move and waif in the wind... See, ballet isn't just about the steps, the technique. There's a heart and soul that's sort of there, that transcends mere execution. It is so beautiful, what she's doing. It doesn't need to be professional 'cause it's just so sweet...

    • @kristeniver1098
      @kristeniver1098 Год назад +1

      She actually really has excellent technique, but it’s just a different technique that’s not as popular anymore. This is 70s Cecchetti ballet technique, and the port de bras and epaulment looks really really different to Vaganova technique. For example, the fifth position for arms isn’t as extended, and the elbows are more bent. During chaine turns, the elbows are bent and the arms look almost floppy, but they are supposed to be delicate and demure. There is more fluidity and slightly different lines and turnout is far less important. This is starkly contrast to Russian technique or Balenchine technique where turnout became very popular and now a technical necessity.

    • @umbertlambert2113
      @umbertlambert2113 Год назад

      @@kristeniver1098 You are clearly an expert Kristen. But tell me, what do you mean by technique in this case? I know that she cannot listen to the music and that is causing problems. But when you consider the position of her hands and legs, her crude transitions, etc. Aren't they problematic?

    @mgblue From Listening with my Heaather Whitestone. pg 77 "someone told me Christian music wouldn't win the crown, I'd have to find another song. I thought alot about that. God is very powerful. He made the earth, grass, trees, everthing I love. If God wanted me to be Miss America, he could certainly lead the judges in their decision. So I decided to ignore that comment and use Christian music, first and foremost, I wanted to glorify God through dance." I'll put up a vid of the book if you like

    You are way off with that comparison. She cannot hear like someone with a head cold. I believe at this time she could only hear about 5% of the music played for her performance. You should google some sites that offer samples of what deaf people hear and then you can understand the amount of perseverance it takes for someone with this disability to memorize and synchronize to music.

Now, obviously, you don't care about that. But the original point is that you said she didn't have help, it was all her, but that is your OPINION, not a fact. It is only a fact when stated by the person it happened to.

    Of course we cannot ecpect Heather's ability to be that of dancers abilities today. Even dancers who could hear perfectly fine were not at par with todays dancers. Even though it hasn't been quite twenty years since, demands for technique and flexiblity have grown tremendously. In the 60's a good penchee would be considered around 100-110 degrees, today a good penchee is 180. I applaud Heather for overcoming her disablity and also on her dancing ability-- disabilty or none.
