Beautiful! I'm amazed how the warped blanks compressed without splitting or breaking free of a glued joint, something new for this beginner to take on board. Thank you for a great video, regards, Tony.
tony toomey Thank you. I wouldn't of had to compress it like that if I owned a planer. Sometimes, you have to make do with what you have. Thanks again.
Great job! After 38 years of furniture making, I finally started turning bowls. I lucked out and found quite a bit of Black Walnut in my neighbors firewood pile. All I can say is.....MORE videos please!! Keep on turning. J W
This is an AMAZING TURN! As you know from post on The Woodturner's Journal, I love cross-grain glue ups. Once again, your turn is BEAUTIFUL. SAFE TURNING, John
Absolutely gorgeous Bowl! The only negative thing I can say about this video is that I am desperately craving a hot dog now and that is way too far me living on the East Coast. Great piece!
Well... it takes time. Start small and look on Craig's list. You can usually find great deals. Get just the basics and gradually expand through time. That's my best advice to get started.
When glueing something and you don't want it to move or slide around due to glue slippage. Sprinkle a bit of salt. Between your glued objects. The salt will eventually dissolve. And to stops things from moving.
Questions, would it be more or less work to cut the board pieces into circles on a band saw before gluing them up? Seems like it would make the initial turning much easier. Time wise, though, I don't know what would be better.
Eddie Jeffries It definitely would make turning much easier and possibly save material and time. I do not own a band saw (until Monday), though. I also really like turning. So it's good practice to hollow it out yourself. Just my opinion.
Jimmie at Stuart Arts Not sure what warpage is. I believe it's auto correct and you meant tennon? If so, I'm always worked and careful. That's why I had the tail stock and you're right. Once it's rounded,it's balanced and much safer.
And also the movement of the wood afterward with changes in Humidity since he is gluing it up sort of like plywood comes. With it hollowed and then finished it should be okay but could possibly crack after a few years. Only time will tell. If he had segmented it when constructing the bowl blank then that should have taken care of this issue. Either way it surely turned out beautiful!!
Pamela Lyons Ohhh. Lol. Sorry. Yeah that worried me too when I went to glue it up. I busted one of my clamps and I thought for a moment the project wasn't going to happen. Thank you.
I used OB shine juice. It's equal parts Denatured Alcohol, Shellac, and Boiled Linseed Oil. Really easy to put on. Remember, it's a friction finish though. You have to apply it with the machine running. You can't try to rub it on by hand with your project off the lathe. It will gum up on you. I learned that the hard way. :)
To keep the boards from sliding about when you clamp them, put a few grains of coarse (kosher) salt down between them. The salt compresses and dissolves, but creates enough bite to keep them from sliding.
Hi, Just found your channel. Nice work indeed! This bowl has a very nice fluid curved shape. If I may, what is your Shine Juice formulation/brand? Thank you for sharing!
bryan mandrawa That's a tough question. I do not typically sell any of my pieces, but for each individual, they would have to decide what it's worth to them. Think about time, material, and know how. I always go back to my wooden mugs I occasionally make. I would charge at least $100 per mug because for me, that is the price of not really wanting to sell it. I'm not sure if that helps or answers the question, but thank you for watching.
Woodturners Journal you're absolutely right. how do you value art. where I come from that bowl would probably be very expensive. anyway im a fan. keep it coming so I can learn more
You're not the first to ask me that and I agree it would make it easier. At the time I did not own a bandsaw, which would make it easier to cut, but also I do not mind starting with it square. I like to turn, so it gives me more for me to turn off and work with. No other reason though.
when boars have a twist, try put them in the sink under waster for 30 minutes, dry them with a towel and glue they will come flat much ez and will not crack.
I wear a mask to shield getting hit in the face. I probably should were a dust mask more then I do, but I have to speak on camera a lot. It makes it difficult to talk while I'm working on something. I really should though.
Keith Spencer Sr. I don't know about more safe, but I don't usual cut the corners off first. That seems more boring to me. I like turning and using my chisels to take off materiel. Just my personal preference.
Nice work!! But man you ramble endlessly about petty stuff! SHORT AND SWEET! At the end of your vid you cut off your face entirely while talking.. that's terrible!! We don't care about freaking hot dogs! lol
This is so good looking. The simple turning the boards gives a stunning effect. The flat top with no lop is really elegant.
Thank you. This is one of my favorite pieces and even I cannot believe how great it came out. Thanks again.
That bowl is stunning bloodwood is awesome. I love the colors the grain makes.
Kobie Kaasjager Thank you. I too, love this bowl.

Oh, and do you have more information on that shine juice?
Wow, beautiful!! So helpful.
Beautiful Bowl
Thank you.

new to the channel and love it!!!
Ron JL White Thank you!!!
just joined your Facebook group too.
It's over a year now since you glued up those very warped boards, have any of the joints opened? Beautiful bowl.
Kevin Geaney No. It's still holding up and looking beautiful. Remember, hallowing it out helps relieve a lot of the pressure.
When glueing something and you don't want it to move or slide around due to glue slippage. Sprinkle a bit of salt. Between your glued objects. The salt will eventually dissolve. And to stops things from moving.
Is really so beautiful, I love it

muito bom ,eu fico admirando as máquinas que você tem ,parabéns
Outstanding
Thank you.
Beautiful bowl. Blood wood is amazing stuff.
Ps- by side grain I think you mean long grain.
Nice work buddy, wish you were in the U.K
James hunt Thank you and so do I. 😆
The warpage worried me a bit but I suppose that the forces in the wood reduce as the piece is formed and hollowed. Nice work!
Jimmie at Stuart Arts Not sure what warpage is. I believe it's auto correct and you meant tennon? If so, I'm always worked and careful. That's why I had the tail stock and you're right. Once it's rounded,it's balanced and much safer.
Hey Jared, he was talking about the warpage of the board before you did the glue up. It is a very nice bowl

hello. I love the finish. what finish did you use. I would like to try it on my items

You have to apply it with the machine running. You can't try to rub it on by hand with your project off the lathe. It will gum up on you. I learned that the hard way. :)
I have a modest question please. Can raw Linseed oil be used? Or it absolutely should be boiled?
beautiful .very nice.
marcos arndt Thank you.
What kind of glue is that you used, as i'v not seen that make in the UK

Wonderfull piece !!!
ArtStreet 52 Thank you!!!
its really interessting.

Dam Morgan That great. Thank you for the tip
Wa a beautiful bowl wtat the product you use to polishing?
William Torrales Watch my video on getting a perfect finish with shine juice. I go through all the steps you need to make your piece perfect.
Hi, Just found your channel. Nice work indeed! This bowl has a very nice fluid curved shape.
If I may, what is your Shine Juice formulation/brand? Thank you for sharing!
Étienne Rivest Shine juice is made from equal parts Linseed Oil, Shellac, and Denatured Good luck with it and thanks for watching.
Thank you for responding. Do you use commercial shellac or "brew" your own?
im a beginner and wish to make bowls this size. i wanted to know the size of the lathe you are using in this video.
Slim Bigginz I am using a Rikon 70-100. It is 12" x 16".

Luis Hidalgo Thank you
If you were to sell that bowl, how much would it be? Great job on this bowl. Truly awesome skill
bryan mandrawa That's a tough question. I do not typically sell any of my pieces, but for each individual, they would have to decide what it's worth to them. Think about time, material, and know how. Why not cut off the corners first, like on a bandsaw?
You're not the first to ask me that and I agree it would make it easier. At the time I did not own a bandsaw, which would make it easier to cut, but also I do not mind starting with it square. I like to turn, so it gives me more for me to turn off and work with. No other reason though.
Looks like a small lathe for that big a block of wood but it seems to be stable.
It held :)
when boars have a twist, try put them in the sink under waster for 30 minutes, dry them with a towel and glue they will come flat much ez and will not crack.
That's awesome advise. I'll definitely try that in the future.
Que líquido você utilizou?
I would have trued each face before I glued, but this is definitely better than the bowls I have made.
Well thank you. Keep with it, though. The whole purpose of my videos are to give others ideas that they can use for their own projects.
Very nice 👍
Tomas Arguinzoni I appreciate it. Thanks.
what is O B shine juice and were can i get it
thomas carey Check out my video on getting a perfect finish. Shine Juice is something you make and in the video, I show you how.

hai finito il pezzo con il bafing?

grazie...buon lavoro
Moc pěkný
Děkuju.
What brand is that small lathe ?
Eric G It is a Rikon 70-100.
It says Rikon on it.
Bellissimo
Rita Riccitell Thank you. :)
Great job! Great idea! Why don't you wear a mask?
I wear a mask to shield getting hit in the face. I probably should were a dust mask more then I do, but I have to speak on camera a lot. It makes it difficult to talk while I'm working on something. I really should though.
He doesn't want to!!
Way not make this simple cut the corner seem more safe to me
Keith Spencer Sr. I don't know about more safe, but I don't usual cut the corners off first. That seems more boring to me. I like turning and using my chisels to take off materiel. Just my personal preference.
i said it before i'll say it again not enough bloodwood used
Lezly Young I agree. It's such a beautiful wood
