Years of online feuding over the look of a lightsaber comes to life as NateCow and VaporTrail finally meet in person to settle their differences. Vapes' Channel: / vaportrailfilms
this was a great laugh, and honestly, I have so much respect for you guys as vfx artists, because this was four different styles of animation on lightsabers all present in one video. Plus, the reflection in the glasses was really good, mad props!
My favorite gag is somehow the sad trombone "womp womp" of the saber sound when Vapes shrugs. 3 years on and I still love this. May the Fourth be with you, everybody.
The lightsabers look the same but the guy that said LETS DO THIS, had a lightsaber that didn't look the same. But do the other three lightsabers look different?
+med plays Games One had one with a very sharply defined core, one had one where the core and glow kinda blur together. The third guy (me) had the pointy tip from Episode III that a lot of people didn't like.
The pointy tip in EpIII was such a departure from how sabers had looked through all the rest of the movies and to many people (especially those in VFX circles) was very distracting.
I found myself laughing the whole time.., the delivery was great lolz I dunno about the pacing / inclusion of the last part but yeah this is the joy of the Art of the Saber~!
Drunken Iron Rabbit Productions This entire thing is definitely a lot of inside jokes. If you check out my channel, you'll recognize the location from Duel of the Dorks, as well as Tim, who is the one who shows up a the end :)
Guess I'm not nerdy enough to be in this mix, but then again, that's probably not what this video was about. Nevertheless, when the day comes that you want to throw a teleporter into the mix, lemme know. :)
This year a few of my friends and I are looking to make our very first lightsaber fight and hopefully enter the LCC. None of us have EVER done any VFX work, ive had a tinker with after effects before but nothing major. Anything you recommend? Good tutorials? Step by steps? Your effects are on point!
I've just stumbled across this channel, can someone please give me an explanation of what exactly they prefer their lightsaber to look like? I see a small difference, I think, but I'm not sure what it is.
+Fritzel Media The final shot where we're back to back is a good reference point. Mine (left) has a sharper edge to the white core and very large, gradual fall-off of the glow that even goes over my face. Vapes's preference is a softer look overall, so the glow is more intense right by the core, and it doesn't expand as far out.
+Fritzel Media No problem! It's definitely one of those things that is more apparent to people who have spent many years refining their own lightsaber effects, or do VFX on a regular basis.
+Fritzel Media I don't like the pointed tip but it's not something that bugs me too much. It looks like they're doing that in Episode 7, but it looks more justified. The glows look fantastic though, from what I've seen in the trailers. 7 1/2 hours to go! :D
We decided to use the same color to better demonstrate the difference in the glow on each saber. It was really meant for people who do lightsaber duels and understand the nuances of the process... and people who know that Vapes and I have long disputed each other's choice in saber glows :P
Nathaniel Caauwe As i said i did not quite understand the rotoscoping process or the reasoning behind the use of similar colors, my judgement was based purely on assumption, the mother of all fuck ups.
question,, I'm doing some slow motion lightsaber shots. Would you recommend slowing down the footage and then adding the lightsaber effect? Or Add the LIghtsaber effect, and then slow down the footage?
It's tough to say. If you're talking about slowing down something in post, slowing down the footage and then rotoing it would leave you doing more frames. But if you finish the effect and then slow it down, your effect might not look as nice since it'll be doing frame-blending and you'll end up with portions of the saber that are no longer solid looking. Ultimately I'd say go with the option that's a little more work but will look nicer. Slow it down and use that as your plate, and where you see the prop blending between frames, just make sure to roto over all of it. If you're shooting with a DSLR or anything that has the capability to shoot higher frame-rates, I highly suggest doing your slow-mo that way. That's how we've done it as far back as Alex vs Nate 1. You'll get true slow-mo since you're not trying to inject non-existent frames, and it looks great :)
I don't have a DSLR so I'm stuck slowing it down in post. that does help though,.. I'll slow it down and then add the effects... I might to a test video to see what happens when I add the effects and then slow it down. For another option you mean to say ad the effect, slow it down, then ad the effect again over any frames that don't look good?
Nah, we did this as an inside joke amongst some of us who have been doing lightsaber videos since we were teenagers. Many years spent debating how a saber should look, it was only fitting that we have an actual battle over it when we finally met in person :P
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, Vapes and I have always disputed about how a lightsaber should look, so it seemed fitting that if we were to have a duel, that's what it would be about. But we both agree that the Episode III sabers look terrible, hence why we team up against Boter when he shows up. Tim's is basically an MS Paint style one because we thought it'd be funny.
HA.
This is now one of my favorite internet lightsaber duels. I was not expecting a good laugh.
Hehe, thanks! It was super fun to put together.

I'm so ashamed that I just figured out what this video was about. CORE differences... How did I miss that?
I found that ending way funnier than I had any right to. Great stuff.
My favorite gag is somehow the sad trombone "womp womp" of the saber sound when Vapes shrugs.

Srsly.
This might be the work that defines my career, lol.
**9 years, my dude.
I only noticed the differences in the rotoscoping techniques when the MSpaint guy showed up. Well done! And congrats on winning LCC 2015!
What are the differences?
"Let's do this". (saber shorts out) He will lose. Heheh jk
great but is alex vs nate / Ryan part 3 coming out soon?
The lightsabers look the same but the guy that said LETS DO THIS, had a lightsaber that didn't look the same. But do the other three lightsabers look different?

+Boter Bug why didn't they like the pointy tip?
The pointy tip in EpIII was such a departure from how sabers had looked through all the rest of the movies and to many people (especially those in VFX circles) was very distracting.
Loved this too much.

I figured as much it all seemed really cool and natural like i twas personal ;p
This is funny, nice work.
Guess I'm not nerdy enough to be in this mix, but then again, that's probably not what this video was about. Nevertheless, when the day comes that you want to throw a teleporter into the mix, lemme know. :)
The most fun thing I want to do!;)
"the best day of my life" :D made me LOL :)
It's a hard one to top. :)
Best. thing. ever.
Haha, thanks Ricky! We were just going for "silly", I think.
Забавно. Ждём-с новые видео.
Hahahaha, I got it at the end, that's hilarious.
These saber blades was from the star wars media.

I definitely see it now, thanks!

What is your thoughts on the tip of the lightsaber?

I loved the end
I was done at 1:43!! Hahaha!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this, especially that ending!
God this video is perfection, y’all are the best. 😄😄
I really can't stand when all the sabers are the same color, granted i don't understand the rotoscoping process so i really should not judge.

Cool video!
Why did you make that last guys light saber look so stupid?
It's part of the joke.
+Nathaniel Caauwe Where you downloaded the sound effects of the lightsaber?

Super awesome!
Awesome stuff.
There all blue
REALLY?????? WOW SO INFORMATIVE
Awesome!!
Is it bad that it took me watching this like 10 different times to get what was going on? All the lightsabers are animated slightly differently.
Nah, we did this as an inside joke amongst some of us who have been doing lightsaber videos since we were teenagers. Many years spent debating how a saber should look, it was only fitting that we have an actual battle over it when we finally met in person :P
Nathaniel Caauwe I figured it was something like that. It's funny how inside jokes can make for good content
The real trick is just how much you explain to your audience. We trusted ours to figure it out. ;-)
Vaportrail If that wasn't the case, then I would find your lack of faith disturbing xD
i feel like every lightsaber looks different.
That's the point ;)
i know, but ive always thought it was the last one.
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, Vapes and I have always disputed about how a lightsaber should look, so it seemed fitting that if we were to have a duel, that's what it would be about. ahh, yeah i dont like episode lll sabers, but still my fav movie.
i happen to like the ep. III sabers, its the ep I sabers i dont like, too thin and the core is colored a bit. not my cup of saber tea
