thank you. Very clear. I do have a question... I have a small amount of Cernit, some Fimo, some Premo, and a lot of Sculpey III. Is Fimo generally best for canes? I've been using Sculpey III for practice, and even days later, can't cut a slice off the cane without it smooshing. I'm not even interested in making complex canes. I just wanted to add some basic canes to what I do now yet all I seem to do is add to my scrap clay bin.

That's a good question. I'd say Kato or Fimo professional are the best for canes and will definitely be easier to use that Cernit, fimo soft, fimo effect, premo and sculpey 3. I'm not sure which Fimo you're using, but if it's not Fimo Professional then I'd keep it away from canes. I'd say that Premo would be the third best clay after Kato and Fimo Professional.
(As far as Sculpey 3 goes, I haven't heard great things about it and not many people recommend it as a professional artist clay. I've heard it can be brittle and too soft. This might be why you're running into problems.)
As far as working with Premo for canes, there are a few things you can do to make you're life easier.
      1. If you're working in a warm environment you're going to have to let your canes sit in a freezer for a few minutes before slicing. Even Kato can be hard to cut in warm weather.
      2. Make sure you're blade is clean and sharp. Wiping it with a little alcohol or a wet-wipe will help with this.
I hope this helps. If you're still having problems please let me know. I'll be glad to help.
PS. Keep all that scrap clay without mixing it into one color. You can make some really pretty stuff with that. Keep an eye out for upcoming videos as I'll be sharing a range of left over techniques.
