    Thank you for doing this. It’s good to hear your opinions about this stuff. I have the British army modular system and the same bivvy bag, but I only have a couple of mats and have been wanting a blow up mat for extra comfort and I’ve been bewildered by the options online. I’ve used two inflatable mats and both had multiple punctures and I ended up sleeping on bare ground. So now I’m always going to take some sort of foam mat as a back up. I was wondering about the British Army self inflating mat and I will go ahead and get one now. Thanks for your help. I enjoyed your no nonsense reviews. I just looked at when you posted this … ‘’oh s**t!’ … you’ve probably emigrated by now, but I subscribed anyway. It must be weird getting a response to something you probably forgot about!

      Thanks for watching, shame the army kit is so heavy but for me its always muscle memory having used so many times I just know where everything is and how it works & ore often than not how to fix it. cheers

    Those quilted blankets are a real surprise, bought one for a punt and it's surprisingly warm. I've Dragged it out the cupboard a few times and threw it over my bed at home on a cold night too.

      Yep I have done the same thing myself, keep it in the car during winter as a just in case measure as well, cheers

    I have the Highlander Ranger Ultra Compact Light sleeping bag and i like it for the warmer parts of the year you can close it up really tight and it takes almost no space in the pack.Sometimes in the winter i combine it with my winter sleeping bag since it takes no space and i have a really warm bag(s).

      Agree with you layers are the way to go as it gets colder, some of those shown have now gone, hoping to get a military type layer system sometime. cheers

    I can recommend the Arctic bag (new if pos) and the 3/4 length sim - bot excellent. Good selection bud

      @LFH02  8 лет назад

      Thanks. Darren. good 2nd hand may be achievable, new are silly money and you can get some of the climbing/mountain bags for the same sort of price.
      My issue is the length always check as spent to many cold nights early in career haha

    Great video Oz I believe it will help those who are just starting out.
    You can't beat military surplus.
    The downside is the bulk of the winter bags.
    But I'm the same as you, got plenty of bags but they all have different uses.
    Defence 4 great bag, usgi-mss bag is great very versatile.
    I also have a Force 10 down winter bag great bit of kit but wouldn't want to use it wild camping as I don't believe it is very robust.
    Great alternative use of the paint brush what should we expect next time?
    Thanks for taking the time to put this Video together.

      Thinned out a lot since the vid but still use what I know works as expensive does not always means best !!
      Still use the snugpak most as it does most weather especially with a bivi bag. cheers

    An old one I know Oz but I remember them 58 pattern bags in the family and in Aldershot. They acquired a nice smell over time...ha ha. ATB Mark.

      Yes you are right and because of the size of the bag cleaning is always a issue with something this big. I am lucky I have a local launderette that does the cleaning but they are getting fewer and further now. Thanks for the comment, hope you are doing well.

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer 8 лет назад

      ***** I suspect the fewer launderettes is as a result of people becoming so self reliant via home washing. You could always try that or is it specialist? I'm doing alright thank you Oz. Still out hiking and exploring...ATB.

      @LFH02  8 лет назад +1

      Yep been watching your vids like the bridge over the wye. I have washed a issue bag myself (In the bath) but drying was the issue especially if you hand it the filling drops to the lowest point causing cold spots that takes a bit of working back. cheers

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer 8 лет назад

      ***** Yes a reasonable video Oz and a good hike. Covered about 28 K on that one. The wash sounds a lot of bother at home. Using professionals is probably the best bet for them bags. Impressive array of bags mind. ATB.

    Hello, So is there a significant difference between the Arctic and the CQC 1981 58 pattern bag?

    • @LFH02
      @LFH02  7 лет назад +2

      Price ha-ha.
      The Brit issue artic is a little bit better in every department & I was around as they changed them over, if you can get a newish one then grab it. Check that the quilted sections all have stuffing in otherwise you will feel a cold spot, I would say you need to use with a bivi bag as the underside is not waterproof. Check the zip "LOTS" as replacements are expensive and more money to have replaced. I always used the stuff sack although they are fairly cheap to get (Car boot sales). I would not use without a bivi bag or at least a pad underneath. Large even when in the stuff sack and heavy. Don't get it wet. Once you have a good one it wont break very often.
      On the 58 patt check the waterproof base is still intact and not falling apart as they are old now, the filling has none of the quilted bits unfilled as they will have been washed lots now. They can be very thin now as they were made a long time ago. again use a under pad or bivi bag as when wet a real nightmare.
      Check both of them have stuffing in now they are all pretty long in the tooth. Bivi bag adds a lot of warm and the ability to be out in the rain but they still need checking.
      The Snugpak Antarctica is a excellent bag for me at over 6ft and broad, but 58 pattern if you can get in the right size does the job.
      At the moment British issue surplus is getting hard to get as it all been sold. The shops are really having a hard time getting surplus at the moment.
      Top Tip from me would be if buying 2nd hand either surplus shops or car boot get it our of the bag and really have a look over.
      Hope this helps Cheers.

      Thanks for answer. The 58 I'm looking at is 1981 and in good condition, and has the liner. So I think I'm going to go for it. Thanks.

    • @LFH02
      @LFH02  7 лет назад

      No probs. The liner is a good shout and really takes away the wear for the inside of the bag. Fairly easily replaced as well. good luck let me know what its like. cheers

    Found the official MOD site for selling ex British military gear. They have the Arctic bag for £20. The bivi is £30 but I'm sleeping in a hammock so no issues of bag getting wet but should I still get it for adding warmth or is bag very good itself ? Great video thank you for sharing buddy

    • @krisdouglas6536
      @krisdouglas6536 9 лет назад

      Just to add, the weight of bag worries me, is the bivi heavy ?

    • @LFH02
      @LFH02  9 лет назад

      The bag is great, but as I said its bulky and a bit heavy, I didn't have an issue sleeping in a hammock although most people say an under blanket as the cold can get underneath you. Bit or trail and error. Its a real cost effective way to get out and be able to sleep in the wilds.

    • @LFH02
      @LFH02  9 лет назад +1

      I am middle aged now and still carry my Snugpak Artic bag as I know it keeps me warm and means you are ready to go the following day with the decent nights sleep. Also adds padding to the underside providing insulation from the ground. Cheers.

      +LFH02 I'm a bit confused now, I was under the impression there was just the Arctic and jungle bags. Barring the 58. Just saw this one eBay and asked if Arctic and they said it only says sleeping bag and its year 1993. They said would take £50 for that and bivi. What do you think if this ? pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=322010219657&globalID=EBAY-GB

    • @LFH02
      @LFH02  9 лет назад

      Its not the jungle bag as that had the side zip, It does look like the artic bag and you would expect to pay about £40 from a shop for just the bivi bag www.forestarmysurplus.co.uk/product/british-army-gore-tex-olive-green-bivvy-bag/
      It looks and sounds like it is good order. I don't know of other sleep systems other than what I have been used to.
      Sleeping bag and bivi bag used together are warm so it does sound good.
      Hope this helps.
