    The only " negatives " to any film camera should be the ones that come with your prints 😋😉

    When I studied photography at college in the 1980's, the lecturers and professional opinions, were against the use of zoom lenses. Prime lenses give a sharper image than a zoom lens, however a decent zoom lens has it's place in photography, as it enables portability for the photographer, by lightning the load of the photographer. The zoom lenses today are an improvement, however, the prime and fixed focus lenses, remain the gold standard in photography.

    Interesting compact zoom camera, enjoyed your video.
    I have a couple of zoom models, an Olymous mju zoom 105 which is a 38-105mm zoom which has the zoom markings on the lens barrel.
    I also have a Samsung Fino 70 which is again a 38-70mm zoom lens and the zoom is shown on the LCD.

    Zooming with our feet is always the best way to go lol
    You could walk closer in the time it that zoom takes to extend 😂👍🏃
    Cool photos though. I have some shots of that church too from last year. It's an impressive building.
    I'll have to dig out my old cameras and give them a spin. My old Sony handicam is great for doing old school videos.
    Fun and informative post Ade.
    I'm in London tomorrow if you're around?

    Love the image at 7:05. The viewfinder on the Sure Shot Owl is amazing in comparison to these Olympus zoom cameras. I gave away an Olympus Accura View 80 after uploading a cheap plastic camera challenge video featuring that model. I also prefer primes, but I agree that not all zooms are bad.

      The weakness of many compact zoom cameras is that their range runs approximately between a natural view and short telephoto rather than being balanced between wide and long, with about 45 mm in the middle, which would cover the most useful focal lengths.

  • @MichaelRusso

    You should look at the Pentax pc35 af. No zoom. Fixed 35mm f/2.8 lens. I think Olympus might have something similar.

    I bought a Samsung Slim Zoom 290 WS, which is basically the same camera as the Rollei Prego 90, just with the samsung branding...It has a wider lens 28 - 90mm which I prefer to the usual 38mm that most point and shoot zoom cameras have. Just the battery is a bummer = two CR123, which are a lot more expensive than AAs or AAAs...

    Yeah, the zooms using motors, especially in those old compact cameras, are a bit slow. I have a Olympus superzoom 120 or something like that, and it is just as noisy and slow as your camera there... and the pictures it takes also are good, in good conditions anyway. Focusing is a bit hit and miss with no manual control.

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  4 года назад

      I agree with focusing with no manual control. I was lucky with this one I think - probably because I had good light and it was mainly at f8 and up.

    A long time ago, when Modern and Popular Photography magazines were battling for the hearts and minds of (film) photographers, Canon announced that they would market more zoom lenses to answer popular demand. I was a prime lens user back then, with only an 80-200mm Nikkor in Ye Olde Tenba gadget bag, and didn't think much of that development. Short zoom lenses (35-105 or 28-80mm) were NOT built by camera manufacturers, which allowed Vivitar, Soligor, Tamron, etc. a slice of the 35mm SLR market. Eventually, Vivitar Series One and Tamron SP lens quality made "the dinosaurs" take notice, and soon Nikkor, Rokkor, and Pentax short/medium lenses proliferated in Canon's wake. Then came Autofocus 35 cameras and things got very interesting.

    I was mooching around my local market today on my lunch break and saw an Olympus film camera (I should’ve made a note of the model)..I was quite taken with the look of it and came with a lens (again dont know if it’s a fixed lens or interchangeable).. I cocked the shutter and it sounded fine, unfortunately I know next to nothing of film cameras so any advice on what to look for (film type etc)? Cheers, subbed 😊👍
    (Ps, sorry for the lack of info 🙄

    • @OldCameras

      Lol it’s fine :)
      What I usually tell people is to see if you already have access to a free camera - relatives, friends etc. If not, get the cheapest possible option and just give it a go. You’ll probably learn a lot more shooting your first roll than any other way.

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras  3 года назад

      It could be a number of things. Maybe the film is too slow so the camera is picking slow shutter speeds. Also make sure you’re not too close to the subject such that the camera is unable to focus.

    Oh days gone by when electronics in a camera were crap as was the plastic they made them of! Dark times my friend, lots of not fantastic plastic about and terrible sounding autofocus and zoom.... I think I need to lay down in a dark, empty room.

  • @vince1000

    are zoom lens inherently worse than prime lens in terms of sharpness or build? or were you just speaking from personal preference

    • @WhitehornMichael
      @WhitehornMichael 5 лет назад

      It's a lot harder to build a good zoom than a good prime, and a lot more expensive.
      Modern zooms are incredible, older zooms not so much, especially in cameras not designed for professionals, but for the general public.
