Exploring A Creepy Abandoned Resort High in the Arizona Mountains - Seneca Lake

  • Off the 60 highway in the tree-laden mountains of northeastern Arizona are the remains of a once-promising resort.
Seneca lake had big plans, cabins, riding stables, a golf course, fishing, camping, hiking and outdoor enthusiasts playground. However it never really took off and defaulting on payments cemented the fate of this roadside retreat.
The main headquarters building, as well as a petrol station and four cabins, remain. Empty shells of their former glory, but still very interesting to have a peek through.
The overgrown campgrounds look forlorn and tired, void of laughter and joy. The lake’s waters ripple gently in the wind causing the empty docks to undulate and sway solemnly.
Behind it, all a large dry waterfall resides quietly over the vast canyon clear of visitors.
This place is very unique and well worth the little explore, we hope you enjoy the video.

As a child, I remember it opening and closing up. You could still get a permit from the tribe to camp and fish at the little lake. The area is known for lots of bear. Was a nice little escape from the desert heat.

I think it's illegal to leave the gas tanks buried after a station is permanently closed, the tanks will eventually rust and and remaining gasoline can end up in the drinking water supply in the area (wells, rivers, etc.). The broken concrete slabs you saw could be from when the tanks were removed.

Moved to AZ in '73. I still remember getting gas here at Seneca Lake. Before the place became too run down, people would camp here after the tribe no longer maintained the site. A shame as it was a nice spot. The gas station at the bottom of Salt River Canyon was always a mixed bag. High gas prices when it was available, good for cokes n ice cream. You could buy day use permits for picnicking / fishing /rafting in the canyon or hiking to Cibecue Falls. There were a couple trailer hook ups too. Quite the views of the canyon from the bottom and throughout the drive down & up coming from Show Low or Globe. Riding a motorcycle through this canyon was sweet.
Building this road in the canyon must have been an adventure.

The original bridge was so narrow that when a semi came across you better stop and wait because they would use both lanes and did not care about cars . @@PinInTheAtlas Hello to you both, I have been really enjoying your exploration series of vids; to elaborate on Ron, you do go well together and that chemistry reflects into the vids; two people interested in where they are and being together. That makes for a certain sweetness or charm and makes the viewer smile.
Just looked up Chaco to see what it is, and it seems very interesting. Given that a lot of knowledge exists about the place, it will be intriguing whether you will have to adapt your exploration to cope with that; i.e. would you still be walking around assessing and guessing the age/use of buildings, or maybe more structured, perhaps accompanied by a person knowledgeable about the place who could confirm or not your assessments on screen.

I’m guessing a little more than half but I remember that the snowballs packed hard and hurt if you were hit. The Apache trail out past Roosevelt dam with the insane switchbacks was incredible. I only spent 2 years out there but it left a lasting impression. I hiked in the 4 peaks and tubed down the Verde river. I was only 24 and ready for adventure. On the way back home to New England I stopped at the Grand Canyon for 3 days with my friends who had come out to rescue me. I took the Bright Angel Trail to the river and back solo and then went right back down the next day with my friends. Your video was awesome and I will be looking for more.

This was once just an idea in somebody’s mind. Who knows who they had to convince, what money they had to borrow, contractors they had to find, materials that had to be brought in. Supposedly there came the last day when the last construction worker left, and someone… some person with their dreams of what was to come, stood back to take the whole thing in, everything brand new and pristine, thinking this day would never come, excited but a little bit scared because opening day was upon them, and the first customers would be walking through the door … maybe they were worried they had forgotten something… but their dream had finally become a reality. That’s the reason these are always so sad to me. Abandoned things almost always started out as someone’s pride and joy. What would they think if they could peer into the future, like they could watch this video, and take a tour of their dream in the state shown here? That THIS is the reality the dream would actually become. Would they lose all their ambition and optimism if they knew what the future held? Would we all do this? ‘Don’t hang on …. Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky. It slips away; and all your money won’t another MINUTE buy. Dust in the wind… all we are is dust in the wind … dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.’

Used to hit Seneca on a regular basis years ago and if I remember correctly, the building with the stone work was a steakhouse when the resort was opened. Fishing was always good, but access to the water has gone to hell with the unchecked proliferation of the cattails and brush. The reason the camp sites and camping at the lake has pretty much ceased is it's a popular night time party spot for the indians. We camped there many years ago and the party crowd came in and got out of control and set our tent on fire to run us out. Well it worked and we haven't been back since. The gas station/store building was used for a while by an outfit that ran whitewater rafting in the canyon.

I got a kick out of all ya'll talking about steel workboots. I have the same hobby as you, started back in 1969 when I discovered an old town next to a river. I've stepped on such nails, and they were hard to get out, generally still attached to an old board. I've fallen into basement rooms in abandoned homes, luckily I was always able to get out. I've had more tetnus shots than I can recall. This was all before cell phones were even a word. I am so happy that I found other folks with the same hobby as I have.
I, here in Kentucky, have to deal with ticks, chiggers, rattle snakes and super aggressive wasps, who will attack you around a foot or two before you even get to a door. It's a hobby most folks do not understand. But, I see history, like time travel, I see an old swingsets and tires on old rope, and I "see" kids playing on it, happily. Most often, there are old, faded, tattered, yellow curtains in the kitchen, I do not know why, but yellow seems to be the old school color.
With the price of wood and tin roofing now-a-days tho almost all of them (houses, businesses, etc) have been dismantled. But, entire small towns still exist, but you'd have to know the owner to even explore such. I do not blame them for wanting no traffic, as they do not want any vandalism.
"Private Ghost Towns" if you may. Plus, people toss out their trash on the way to such, so the neighbors are spared getting pissed off. Often had a "meeting room" ie the city hall for the holler.
ie where the locals would decide on whether or not to spend the money for a pipe to bring in water from a spring up a hill.
    Keep on trucking from ed.jablonowski@gmail.com

It is such an amazing feeling stepping back in time and for a brief moment looking through the eyes of those dearly departed. We have yet to venture into Kentucky but it is on our Atlas for sure hopefully we get there soon. So happy you have found our channel Ed, hope you enjoy more of our adventures.
