- The white supremacist who killed 51 worshippers in an attack on two mosques in New Zealand was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without parole.
Christchurch High Court Justice Cameron Mander said Brenton Tarrant had shown no remorse, and that no amount of time in prison would be enough to hold him to account “for the harm you have done.”
It marks the first time a court in New Zealand has sentenced a person to a life sentence without parole.
On March 15, 2019, the 29-year-old opened fire at the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, NZ., armed with military-style semi-automatic guns. He killed 44 people at the mosque, including a three-year-old boy, before attacking a second mosque in the suburb of Linwood. Seven people were killed in that attack.
The attack led to a ban on firearms in New Zealand and a campaign against hate content by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
Survivors and victims’ families celebrated outside the court as Tarrant was sentenced on Thursday. One of those in attendance said though the “loss is really big,” the judgment would help to “make us move on.”

Depends if it was police or correction officers. In this it was the latter, which because of security, they get blurred by the media. For police it's different because in essence they are "public" figures. I imagine the first was police due to the nature and that he would have been in custody (and not prison) at the time. I assume as to why the guard on the left wasn't blurred because he is court security and not a corrections officer.
I was living in Christchurch at the time and my kids and wife were stuck at school locked down. it was a surreal experience.

I’m born and raised in New Zealand and I never thought this would ever happen in a country I call home he deserves a lifetime of complete silence in his cell with no one ever mentioning his name again justice served.

What gives a nation strength? And how does diversity increase that

social, political, religious and ethnic conflict. The United states is one of
the most diverse nations on Earth, and they are about an inch away from
tearing each other to pieces. Brazil with all its racial diversity is
completely fractured as a nation, where people cannot get along and
separate and self segregate whenever possible. South Africa with all its
“diversity” is turning into a bloody backwater as its diversity increases,
black on other black, black on white, white on black, black on Indian,
doesn’t not matter, its ethnicity vs ethnicity. They all turn on each other
in the end.
Why is it that what gives Western nations strength(diversity)is not what
gives Eastern nations(China, Japan, Taiwan,South Korea)their strength?
How are they so strong, China set to be the worlds most dominant nation
in this century, whilst lacking diversity? Why is that their non diverse
nations do so much better than our own, and on so many different

I watched the shooting. A part of my humanity died that day.
I also read his manifesto. He claims it wasn't any kind of hatred or emotions that caused him to do it. It was preserving white people in NZ due to the high birth rates of foreigners, and low birth rates of white NZ people. Maybe he should have just found a white girl to have babies with instead of killing 50 plus people.

At 0:57 when the judge said "you shot people in the back" - mind how everyone looks at him, even that lady doesn't mind fully turning behind just to look at him. Because it's an act of cowardice? @@kchabwa For me its almost not even about the punishment. Think of it like this if he is in prison for the next 50+ years or until he dies. That costs a lot each year. Prison should be a deterrent so a place you dont want to go but it should also be about reform. Some people make mistakes and awful ones but you can reform them. You cant reform a monster.
Frankly I would prefer if the money needed to be spent. Put this man down and the money that would have been spent on him be spent on the families of the victims or the living victims. Maybe counseling and other extra support for them. Maybe they cant work and need assistance.
Death sentence is too easy for a punishment for him. He deserves to be locked in a box for eternity. That's a harder punishment.
I don't know why people advocate for the death penalty so readily. Being locked, bored, in a box for his entire life is far far worse. Let him be a living death, always knowing that he put himself in that box. Keep him alive via feeding and oxygen tubes when his body fails for as long as possible. In his case, death would be a release.

My grandma was living in New Zealand at the time of this incident, a lot of her friends was killed in the mosque. Thanks for a non Muslim who helped my grandma to hide from the terrorist, I still fear this day and pray for the people who has been killed in and outside of the mosque.
