Marvellous list, Michael. You took me by surprise a few times… Bauhaus, Autechre… Then the Mighty Fall at number one!!
Loved that you name checked the sadly missed John Peel… I was going to ask in the comments for your favourite tracks, how you came by the pretty much non-mainstream music. Here in the UK the daytime radio back in the 80s was terrible… prob still is… Nothing but manufactured easy listening pop… For goodness sake, I even recall one instance when Bowie’s Boys Keep Swinging was cut short because the DJ couldn’t stand the guitar at that time in the morning… Thankfully we had John Peel starting at 10 pm most weeknights, who despite the BBC bosses always trying to clip his wings stuck to his musical guns. The diversity of music he would play, I feel remains unsurpassed and I like many others was introduced to such great music both recorded and in studio sessions that he remains a national treasure to music lovers in the UK.
Thank you for the list… and laughed out loud at your thumbnail gag!

Good list man. I am not sure I could make such a list because there are so many great bands and the rankings would change depending on my mood and my feeling at a point of time. But I agree with you about most of the bands on your list that they are all important bands...I think the Kinks would be up there, I would probably put Nue! in there somewhere, and other bands I could include are Husker Du, Wilco, Joy Division, The who, The 13th floor elevators, Big Star, The clean, Kraftwerk, Can, La Dusselforf, Faust, Harmonia, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Ronnettes, the Beach Boys, The Beatles, Captain Beefheart, The Birthday Party/Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Stereolab, Hawkwind, Ramones, Pavement, The Silver Jews, Sigur Ros, Boredoms, Funkadelic/Parliament, Sonic Youth, Happy Mondays, Flying Lotus, The specials, The Chills, The Verlaines, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Roxy Music, Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Yellow Magic Orchestra, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Cocteau twins, CCR, MBV, The Who, Ride, and The Sonics. All these and more are my favorite bands, just cannot rank them...

What a fantastic list. I love all of your more left field choices and they are all really ‘important’ bands I think. Bauhaus are too often thrown in with the goth scene but their music is really top rate. I would have many similar ones, but maybe some more personal stuff like the Chameleons, Broadcast, Stereolab, Pram, and another from Dusseldorf - Mouse on Mars. Talk Talk and Japan as more mainstream choices. So tough!

What a list😳I know it's a matter of personal tastes but there are some iconic bands missing that would have made my list as well as many US lists. My #1 The Beatles of course for many reasons as well as the Solo Beatles (I'm partial). Some other artists that should be considered are Eric Clapton and his many different band configurations. Traffic, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, U2, CSNY, Neil Young. You get the idea. I could go on and on. But 1 I will add that a band I am into at the moment is Yello. Not many here knows this band and their records are super expensive but like other bands, this should be considered. Checking out bauhaus as I am interested why this was so high on your list.

Hi! This channel has evolved to beginning to compare against the first pressings of the album.
I have looked at some of them and it seams that general the first pressing is holding its own really good. Especially when the new pressed were trying to get the best from the master tape by half speed and other SQ improving technicalities.
And what I have picked up is that are both more or less equally good but with different reasons.
    My question this far...
Can we make any general conclusion that we with high probability can say that we can't get wrong SQ wise with a first pressing ?? 🤔
Thanks for all your videos! 👏

Throbbing Gristle cosmos, is a great way of putting it. Coil, Cosey Fanny Tutti, Psychic TV, C&C, etc. a beautiful world indeed. Have you ever been a SWANS or Einstürzende Neubauten?

Michael, I have loved your videos during lockdown. They have given me great enjoyment, so thank you. Wow the winner of this list took me by ( a nice ) surprise . Being of the generation that grew up listening to John Peel in the late 70s/80s, you cannot underestimate the wealth of music he turned us on to. Obviously the Mighty Fall he adored, so, some four decades later it is nice to see that you see the body of work's merit, even if it isn’t the obvious choice that everyone would have expected to see. Each to their own, people - it is subjective. With your love of electronica/repetitious beats - Can/TG/ Kraftwerk etc it is not such a surprise that you would appreciate The Fall after all. But as a proud mancunian, it is nice to see them get that spot in your list - I'd love to see you do a top 10 of the Fall, if you have the time - it would be good for you to continue this train of thought, as the vast majority will not have heard of MES, and your knowledge of music we respect, otherwise why would we be here. Well done showing the Bend Sinister cover too, it doesnt always have to be Hex ;-)

I find it interesting (ironic?) that most (all?) of the recordings of your #1 favorite band (mine too) The Fall were released in what is pretty much the opposite of audiophile sound quality.

I find these lists interesting, but I can't do one of my own. It's like I'm rediscovering music all over again and I don't want to (re)discover the same bands and same music again. Maybe a decade ago I could have in my Bauhaus, The Fall… but I don't listen to it now. I don't like to listen to this kind of music in a stellar system… I think The Fall was the band more played by John Peel.
Kraftwerk… that's the usual exception, I keep loving them and your suggestion to buy the german versions was spot on.

Michael, wie beurteilst Du das "Art Ensemble of Chicago"? Ganz klar einer meiner größten Favoriten, an Kreativität kaum zu übertreffen. Und die Klangqualität ihrer Aufnahmen, out of this universe.

Very nice list with a few artists I have not yet heard. I love Classic & Hard Rock, so we have a few overlaps. I guess I could give a top 15 by genre too! But the obvious all-around contenders are, on the hard Rock side: Van Halen, Def Leppard, KISS, Ghost, Iron Maiden, and Led Zeppelin. On the mainstream Rock side: Sting, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, Genesis. On the Latin Rock side: Soda Stereo. Prog Side: Marillion, Pink Floyd, and Porcupine Tree...

Interesting list. I agree with you about the Rolling Stones not being as strong from the 80's on. I would say the same is also true of The Who. I would rank the Rolling Stones above The Who though because I think their 60's and 70's output is so much better.
