Sounds great!
Last year Barbie was nominated as an “adapted” screenplay when all it was adapted from was a toy and Maestro was nominated as an original screenplay when it was about a real person, so the definition has been blurred.
So sad I wasn’t able to catch this one at TIFF but I’m so glad you were able to see it and glad to hear that Jason Reitman is BACK
This movie would go for Original Screenplay, since movies based on real people go for Original Screenplay unless they have a specific source material (i.e.: _Oppenheimer_ went Adapted because it's based on the Oppenheimer biography _American Prometheus,_ whereas _Maestro_ went for Original because, while it's a Leonard Bernstein biopic, it doesn't have any one particular basis). I disagree with the Academy's standards for what's Original and what's Adapted in many ways, but that's how it is.
It's a movie about Hollywood, the academy LOVES movies like this.
Best screenplay oscar nomination is in the bag
Best picture
Best editing
Best lead actor
Best supporting actor
They must nominate atleast 1 cast member.
I really hope it makes it big at the Oscars. But who would be in Supporting Actor? I think Rachel Sennot has a chance at Supporting Actress.
Happy Saturday Night!
I want this to win sag ensemble
Woah, I heard the Toronto screening was sold out. Glad you got to see it, can’t wait for it in theatres
Some of my favorite 'lesser known' actors are all in one movie and I can't wait to see it.
- Andrew Barth Feldman, who plays Neil Levy (most recently starred in No Hard Feelings with Jennifer Lawrence)
- Finn Wolfhard, who plays an NBC page (mostly known for his role in Stranger Things)
- Cory Michael Smith, plays Chevy Chase (known for his role in the Gotham series and more recently May December)
- And of course, Gabriel LaBelle who I agree is an underrated talent... glad to finally see him getting some attention
I've been rooting for this movie since it was announced. I love the run Reitman had early in his career and have been hoping for a comeback. I can't wait to see it
Hi Brian what are your thoughts about Toronto I live about 3 hours away from there
I was excited to see previews of this movie recently, and now I am super-excited to know even more about it as a result of your excellent review. Thank you, Brian!😊😍🤩💖💖💖💖
I must say the casting is incredible! All the actors look so much like their characters. Looking forward to seeing this!
I truly think this will win SAG ensemble
Looking forward to seeing this movie. Thanks, Brian, for another excellent review.
i only heard about this film a few days ago and i’ve watched quite a bit about it - everything is 100% positive. i very rarely see movies in the theater these days but i might make an exception for this.
Looking forward to seeing this one!
Hey Brian can you do a review on K-Pops?
Any shot at “minor” categories.. Best makeup/hair? Best costume?
Love your channel! Long time subscriber, but this is my first comment. You should tell us what you thought of Toronto, and the festival experience as a whole. As a resident here, I’d love to know. And so looking forward to seeing Saturday Night! Best and cheers. JPE
I think Screenplay, Editing, Score (Jon Baptiste) and Picture
Editing might be a tough one to crack, but I agree with the rest.
It wasn't a "live recording." It was a live broadcast. Not taped, not filmed, not kinescoped. Live, as in Saturday Night Live. Get it?
I want to see this movie so badly but it doesn't have a release date in Argentina yet. I think the local distributor is waiting to see how much splash it makes come awards season. Hope it does well in Golden Globes and Critics Choice so it's added to the summer (southern hemisphere January/February) schedule
I actually love a good Jason Reitman movie, Juno and Up in the Air are so good.
SATURDAY NIGHT is looking like one of the best ensemble films in years
I was 11 when I watched the first episode of "Saturday Night" when it aired live. I continued to watch it over the next five years. I got to see the first episode again when NBC aired it the week before the Fall 1980 cast started. I was 16 and had a better understanding of television production and had seen several episodes that had live gaffes and glitches. I was surprised to see how slick that first episode was. It was like it was put together by people who had done television for years. It's stunning to find out how much chaos was going on behind the scenes prior to airtime. (However, it is possible I missed the gaffes and glitches on the first show and they were edited out of the repeat.)
SNL is not telecast in most countries, but I'm looking forward to this movie. Love the retro-looking poster. When it comes to Oscar noms, I think Hair & Make-up and Costumes could be long-listed.
Complete waste of time. Boring film! Should have been a documentary!
Would love to see Jason Reitman get a Best Director nomination!
Great analysis!
Willem too for Supporting Actor!
I’m still waiting for a movie similar to this but based on the story of the creation of Sesame Street in 1969
LIVE FROM NEW YORK ITS SATURDAY NIGHT
Not sure if Brian has talked about this before so sorry if I’m repeating something…
Hermione Baddeley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Room at the Top (1958) - she was onscreen for 2:19… 2minutes 19seconds! That’s basically a cameo!
Maybe they’re more rigid now but then again Judi Dench WON in 1999 and she was only onscreen for 5:52! So, one or more of the supporting cast COULD be nominated even if they were onscreen for only 5minutes.
Thank you for this review. So excited to watch this.
Could you do a walk-through of your experience with the Toronto Film Festival on the whole? Maybe, how you got interested in it, how you signed up for it, what were your expectations with the festival, and how your experience met or fell short of that experience, and any pointers or insider tips on how to have the best time there?
What about Oscar consideration for costume or makeup/hair?
And Production Design
So glad this looks like it will live up to the HYPE😂❤
I can't wait to see this!
BEST WORKOUT SESSION EVER
When you said, "Almost no missteps." I got emotional during a specific scene. Can you guess which one?
Thank you brian about sutrday night review❤❤💛
Miss your room of videa❤
I'm completely stoked to see this movie! I think the dawn of this show deserves cultural preservation.
Awww I’m happy to hear you liked it!!!
I think it’s going to be a shoe in for the SAG award for best ensemble
Really enjoy your Toronto reviews, Brian! So great to see Jason Reitman back on his A-game. This, The Substance, and Anora are the three I’m the most excited to see this awards season.
We talking about Nicholas's TT allegations?
When last was SNL funny?
Last season was up and down. A few good sketches, but only 2 or 3 episodes that were strong from start to finish.
2 seasons ago, season 48, was fantastic.
I am so OLD I was in HS when it debuted. TBH, I did NOT become a fan until the EDDIE MURPHY cast (1982) . Shh, don’t tell, NEVER LIKED Chevy, to this day. Just not my cup of tea, but to each his own. Best Cast , IMO, KATE MCKINNON & Aidy Bryant.
