Why can't all tutorial creators have this much of a joyful/enthusiastic personality on camera? It's very inspiring and makes it much easier to feel excited about what you're learning. I never feel excited to watch videos on mapping, but whenever I watch OMGcraft's videos I always feel very excited to get straight to it and work with what resources I need to.

Can you try the traditional way which works in Minecraft PC and PE? Make a map in a place you want to make a pixel art for it. The map will show a 128x128 area if it's not enlarged. Then, fill the area with blocks. The blocks can make the pixels in your map. Make sure to update the map so it can show your picture correctly. Your map will become an image after that. It should work if I remember things correctly. It's very time consuming because I need to place 16384 blocks for the image.

The same except you would have to ask your friend for access on whatever he is hosting it from
Or ask him for the world save, edit that save, and them ask him to put it back in the server and overwrite the old save with it

Its either a LOT of maps, or a texture pack, or plugins (prbably plugins)
They use maps because if you press F3+B to see entities and item frames are entities.
No, hypixel uses maps. I own a server there are not plugins that can do that.
There is a plugin called ImageOnMap or something like that
