At long last, Winners & Losers has returned! Finally it's time for CITIES, after many years of comments suggesting it as a topic. This one was surprisingly difficult, given how loose the definition of a city can be, and the inconsistencies that this causes.

I think one thing was wrong though. In Safest cities, he didn't go by crime rate but by some Safe Cities Index including "digital security, environmental security" etc. Etc. Most people when talking about safety mean "Am I going to get shot robbed or beat up?"
I believe cities in the Gulf are the safest by this criteria, like Dubai, Riyadh, etc. Since basically every citizen is wealthy and every non-citizen gets deported upon suspicion of a crime so the crime rate is really low

Im so sad as an American that we cant even have infrastructure in big cities as advanced as Japan, Korea and China. Proper structuring, effective crime reduction, effective cleaning programs and public transportation that links smaller areas to larger hubs, takes years to get even a fraction of any of that over here

There are laws and criteria for how a municipality should become a city, this includes the balance of: Land, Population, and Economy, likewise this criteria also suits for the creation of Provinces, Municipalities, Barangays (barrios), and other formal and informal divisions. I just feel like Pateros falls on the economy part though. It is also the smallest in terms of land, somewhere in between 1-2 km2.

    • @reeces.pieces3

Chicago really is nowhere near as bad as people say. The city got the reputation of being dangerous in the 1930's, and it never went away even after it became safer. We do have crime, especially in the south, but we aren't even in the top 30 most dangerous in the US.

I was surprised to see it at 2nd as well, but what you thought about it relative to Canada is a misconception that so many Canadians have. Toronto is nowhere close to being the most dangerous or least safe city in Canada in terms of crime or murder specifically, whether it's all towns and cities or just major cities. Most of those places are out west. And for Ontario, it's up north.

Russian, from Moscow here. The "top 5 safest cities" is particularly funny in omitting mine. A Canadian here, in the comments to a urban cycling related video, once admitted he only had 5 bicycles stolen in his life, which he consideres lucky and safe. Just to let you know: i got no bicycle stolen whatsoever. I'm constantly doing crazy things like forgetting to strap on my bike to a pole for couple hours, leaving my gopro just hanging in the wardrobe, leaving the car unlocked and sometimes running (i.e. with they key in) unattended. Never once got anything stolen*.
The covid delivery boys on those chinese e-bikes - even they let them unchained for 5 minutes they need to go inside and get the order to the appartment door.
Just to give you an idea of what a safe city is like.
    * - Almost fergot. Ok, 20 years ago my mom got her car hijacked, and 10 years ago another unsuccessfull attempt.
