    This is wisdom because modern golf course design uses postage stamp size greens on the top of a hill to thwart the golfer. Odds of keeping a ball on the green do down with distance of the approach shot so the better overall scoring strategy on many holes is to lay up short of the green then hit a high lofted lob shot close to the pin for a one-put par or birdie if a long hitter off the tee.
    Before the game changed to Grip It, Rip It then lob out of the rough on par 4s in the late 90s when large volume carbon shaft drivers and lower spin Pro V1 ball increased Driver distances by 50+ yards golf holes were designed with angled greens that rewarded shaped approach shots with mid-irons (back when a 7 iron went 150yards) and penalize the golfer who could only hit straight by always leaving them ‘short sided’ to a green and pin position that angles right to left \ which ‘favors’ a high draw approach ) shot or left to right / which gives a high fade ( a better chance of STAYING ON THE GREEN AFTER LANDING AND ROLLING TOWARDS THE PIN.
    I learned golf in the 1980s from Nicklaus in “How I Play Golf” and that’s how he explained course management via shaping mid-iron approach shots to control ball direction on the green after landing and how I still try to play in my 70s off the “member’s” tees instead of the ‘senior’ tees. Unless I really nail my Drive with my PING G425 Driver I don’t try for green in regulation I just lay up to the flattest lie in front of the green with the longest straight line distance between edge of green and the pin for that day’s pin placement and the try to land the approach shot close and them one-put for par or if the golf gods are smiling hold the chip/pitch for a Birdie.
    Few recreational golfers never try to learn to shape shots because it takes a lot of practice on the course with real golf balls not the rocks on the range. I never was able to shape shots consistently until my late 50s when I retired and took a job as a starter which allowed me to practice on the range and play every day for free, mostly solo practice rounds a luxury pros have but amateurs don’t. I played daily, weather permitting, for ten years and could shape shots at will. Now playing weekly, the clubs are no longer like Jedi light sabers but it still fun playing like they are while fighting the ‘Evil Empire’ (Punitive course designs) and being rewarded when a shaped shot visualized beforehand gets executed as planned and rewarded by par or better.

      @hlf_coder6272 Месяц назад

      If you can't hit the par 4s with 2 decent shots, you're probably playing tees that are too long. I was a club pro for several years, and I'd estimate 90% of golfers are playing at least 1 set of tees too difficult for their playing level.
      It's no wonder they're constantly frustrated. Their ego makes the game almost impossible before they even start.

    The par 5’s where I golf are fairly short. They play like a long par 4. It’s kinda easy to get on in two I eagled one of

    I think it's the opposite. Go for eagles. Because if it is like poker tournaments where aggro play and big stacks lead to more 1st place. Less aggro and less risk leads to more cashes.
    So if you are playing for first, go for eagles and when you get that lead, can back off the aggressive risk and enjoy the lead. To play for birdies.
