Every time I watch Fires of Pompeii I think of Capaldi's speech. Really liked the bridge between two great eras of Who.
"Immortality isn't living forever... It's everybody else dying..."
Another of my favorite lines from a Series full of favorite lines!
I read this in Capaldi’s voice
I feel like 12's entire arc is about him coming to terms with loss and grief. When you look at his run, the Doctor had lost so much before he regenerated as 12. He took his face to remind himself to save people. He took his voice as a tribute to Amy. He lost so much, and during 12's run he lost so much more. He just wanted to save someone, so he saved Ashildr, and because of that, spoilers.
Fun fact about one of the cards in episode 3: If you notice, one of the cards said "It was my fault, I should have known you didn't live in Aberdeen". This was because in Classic Who, on Sara Jane Smith's last story with the Fourth Doctor in 1976's "The Hand of Fear", he dropped her off at what he thought was her home town but was actually Aberdeen, Scotland.
They also bring it up in School Reunion
That scene where he realises why he chose that face just gives me chills every time. Going all the way back to The Fires of Pompeii in series 4 was so so clever.... just amazing storytelling as usual with this show. Just seeing Donna and TENnant again hit me so hard the first time I saw this... especially Donna😢😢😭😭
@SpankMeSanta What I took that to mean is that he can only subconsciously choose his face. Consciously it seems like a face lottery, but his subconscious thoughts seem to have an influence on his regenerations. That would explain #12 and also #13 very well. As far as I know, the only time he consciously chose his own face was when the Time Lords forced #2 to regenerate, but let him choose #3's face.
One wonders if #12 might have had a different face, had #11 not called future-Clara from Trenzalore and learned he had regenerated into someone "old."
@@firefly24601 Yeah, that's how I've always thought of it in my head, that he can only subconsciously control it..I think other time lords may be able to control it better but he just doesn't have the ability, or the want, to control it fully and instead lets fate decide his next form.
Na how many times has the doctor said stuff like I might have two heads I might never make sense again ect
@@ppem1988 Yeah, but he also Gallifrey before his first regeneration, so it's possible he may have never learned some of the tricks of regeneration..I mean, if there are potions that could influence a regeneration I think it stands to reason that a Timelord may be able to influence their own regeneration somewhat, even if the Doctor doesn't know or doesn't care how.
@@markfuston2714 I agree with the potion because that's basically how the war doctor came into it
The fact that Capaldi is already at least your second favourite Doctor... I'm pretty sure he's going to become your favourite.
:)
When I think about Ashildr being immortal, it makes me think about how many seconds there are in eternity.
I just watched Endgame a few hours ago and thought my day couldn’t get any better…
and the NFL draft! (sports nerd here)
I literally watched both today (watching draft now). I'm struggling to find friends who've seen endgame so I can explode my emotions. I won't here to avoid spoilers.
Watched it last night. My face was aching really bad from crying, laughing and smiling
@@VenoRPG well that's reassuring
3:22 "I love Vikings!"........five seconds later, for good measure, let's throw in Maisee Williams into the mix!
I was so incredibly happy they addressed the past Capaldi acting when I saw this. I also forgot that shayla would recognize Arya, wooo! She's so good in this too xD
The tears were already welling up in my eyes when you said, 'We're moving on because I will start crying if I think about that."
Yeah, Maisie Williams is in Doctor Who! Who saw that coming? Certainly not Me! Geddit? 'Certainly not Me?'.....I'll get my coat.
That "I'm the doctor and I save people" speech.. with that music... Omg so powerful. Gets me every time!
I love the scene where the Doctor realises why he chose his face. It’s perfect
I'm glad you reacted to this episode. I put it in my recommend list for two reasons, 13:00 Asheilda , is a great name. But obviously couldn't tell you ahead of time. That would have ruined it. And the 2nd reason was "why did I choose this face"
Which is important because now we know that on some level the doctor can choose traits in his future self. It's also important because now we understand more why we got Capaldi's doctor after having Smith's and why they are so opposite. A. He got tired of getting his heart broken and caring too much about his companions but B. He's still the doctor and he choose that face because he saves people
I hope you also realize that we, your fans, enjoy watching your reactions and get excited just as you get excited while watching these episodes. Thank you for not skipping this one! It was a treat :)
This is another case of the doctor saving someone where... the consequences are iffy. This episode always reminds me of "Waters of Mars" -- his "saving people" and "if anybody has a problem with that" reminds me so much of "Time Lord Triumphant".
Clara having much the same effect on him at this point as Donna. Clara's "duty of care" that she mentions multiple times (when taking the kids to the amusement park for example) rubs off on him the same way as Donna's "You don't have to save everyone, just save someone". Same thing happened with Pertwee to a degree as well. Whenever post regeneration the doctor is unsure of who he even is -- "I DoNt KnOw!!!" -- he goes through this cycle of self doubt, wrath, arrogance, and then acceptance. A cycle that gets quite emotional and often disastrous when you mix loss into the equation... and as many have commented and as the Doctor has said many times, that long life is riddled with loss and grief. Even from the beginning:
"Believe me, my dear, your future lies with David, and not with a silly old buffer like me."
Part of why I like Capaldi so much, knocking Pertwee out of my #1 spot. Even gave Moffat a chance to write some of the best monologues in sci-fi as Capaldi was able to deliver them.
Oh crud, you're coming up on 9x07 and 9x08 aren't you? 48 year old man here letting out a "squee" like a little fangirl...
The device the Doctor used to bring her back was Alien. It was to heal their injuries. The Doctor had to alter it for Human, He thinks he changed it too much and it has made her immortal. All of Series 9 are good stories. The problem with not seeing all your Reactions is, there is a hint in each story, we won't see when you get it.
According to Maisey Williams she wanted to go on to the show for a long time and once she got on to game of thrones she just asked to be on doctor who and they just said yes
One of my favorite lines in a Series full of favorite lines: "Do not believe this foolish trickery!!!"
"It's Arya!" Fantastic that you didn't know that going in! Her presence was very well advertised when this came out. This is gonna be fun!
IMO Series 10 is capaldis best series, then series 9 then 8. Also the next companion is one of my favourite.
Heresy!
:^)
PringleSauce I like series 10 and it’s probably Capaldi’s best series. Nardole was also a good companion. Bill Potts was meh. The finale was nice and definitely better than series 9
Series 9 is better for individual episodes, but Series 10 is better for the characterization of Capaldi and storytelling.
As a single unit, Series 10 is possibly the best representation of what modern Doctor Who is. Despite the often gratuitous references to the tokenism.
Nardole is the best, Bill is meh
If you are wondering about the yo yo, the 4th Doctor had it quite a bit...that and jelly babies. ❤❤
The Doctor is really careful with his possessions. Same yo yo, the (now) two thousand years diary...
One of my favorite episodes of S9. I love the humor of the Doctor trying to make warriors out of the farmer folk, the introduction of Ashildr, and the emotional reveal behind the Doctor's chosen face. Seeing 10 and Donna again meant a lot to me.
The moment when 12 decides he has to help and Clara knows it, is one of the most underrated scenes in all of Who, in my opinion it was "perfect" on all accounts.
Yes I freakin loved that part.
This freaking show is just something else, love how much you love it
I think the Doctor sees immortality as a curse as much as a blessing. Granting a companion immortality also means condemning them to see everyone they know wither and die, and he knows how much that hurts. As much as he hates leaving companions behind, he doesn't want to make them live with the loss he has had to live with.
Capaldi became my fav Dr in his 1st season and just cemented more as his Dr went along.
Hey Shayla. Great call back to Fires of Pompeii, 10th Doctor Tenant. Also, that girl Ashildr is in New Mutants.
Quick trivia note: Originally Capaldi was gonna be the 11th Doctor, but Moffat ultimately went with Smith instead. While I do love both Smith and Capaldi, I am actually glad that Smith was 11 and Capaldi was 12. And that was a great callback to Season 4!
Endgame and a Shayla Doctor Who reaction. Today's been a very good day. :)
I was so excited for this reaction because of both Maisie Williams and the scene where the Doctor remembers Pompeii. I enjoyed your reactions to both. :) I was so nervous you wouldn't show your amazing set-up at the end! It's awesome. Sunlight must be such a pain for RUclipsrs.
Thank you! Sunlight really is a painnn hah.
Who frowned me this face? I love that scene and Peter's Doctor speech so much. Great reaction as always Shayla.
In episode 4, I loved the opening with the Doctor and bootstrap paradox. I was hoping you'ld react to this episode because Maisie Williams was in it.
16:00 Why did seeing more of your room make me so happy😂
it's like if we only got to see the tardis from the outside :p Finally something more than the green wall ha ha ha. You know, next we're going to want more like the hallway and eventually an IRL walking around, a day in the life of Shayla. Like that angry Sun/God you can't satiate our appetite for Shayla content. Feed us!
@@Novaximus "FEEEEED MEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!" -The Wire
Doctor Who meets Game Of Thrones is the perfect way to describe this episode. The scene where remembers why he has his face is a epic scene.
He had another “waters of mars” moment. He never learns. He knows he shouldn’t have done it...it was rash. But the device he gave her was just a medical device to heal...but it will heal her forever. I really really like Capaldis take on the doctor, especially this season on
Did you like the opening titles of 9x04? Under The Lake and Before the Flood is one of my favourite Capaldi stories and probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite story this season after episodes 10 and 11! I hope you enjoyed this season too (I'm not sure how far you've gotten so far). Another great reaction!!!
Two of my favs too! But then most of the eps in this Series are my favs. (Except one. You know which.) ;)
Thank you! And I loved it!
Decent episode imo ( I think I like the second part better.). I enjoyed Ashidlr aswell as the plot of the episode.
The best moment is definitely The Doctor realizing why he has this specific face , it’s such a cool payoff imo .
well, it was an ok episode, but a needed one for her to appear and to set up future episodes. As for the plot, not one of the better ones, but she needed to see Her this first episode.
Thanks for making me remember that Karen Gillan was in season 4, when you said she was in that episode it triggered a weird flash of a memory in my mind of her that kinda weird and kinda creepy face paint, that was weird
"He's not going to stop until he gets her back".... It's amazing how much fear that sentiment projects with that mindset and The Doctor when it has previously come to saving companions throughout the years. Gives me chills thinking about that.
12 giving nicknames to the Vikings is the best. xD xD xD
Got in bed an hour ago then remembered it was Thursday so couldn't sleep until I'd watched this
Ian Martin I did that too during the holidays but this week I have exams everyday so I can't. The video got released right after I went to bed 😣
@Ian Martin Ha same!!!
Thank you!
Great reaction really enjoyed when Donna appeared you held it together well.
Wait, you film these in a _room?_ I always figured you were just in some sort of formless green void.
It's bigger on the inside.
"A good death is the best anyone can hope for."
Not one of the more popular lines, but there's so much truth in it. Everyone dies eventually. Not everyone dies well.
I found the Dr's interpretation of the baby crying very tear-jerking at the time.
I've very glad you reacted to this one.
It also matches up with Matt Smith talking to the baby in season..uh..7? 6? I think it was 6.
Hearing your love for Peter is amazing
The immatoral thing was a devise from the mire (the monsters in this episode)
Ding ding ding... the doctor face. More dots connecting. Lol
BTW..what did you think of the Metal Version of the Doctor Who theme in 9x04??
A-mazing.
The Doctor played the god once more.
Wow, you pretty much nailed Ashilda’s problem.
That flashback got me so emotional when I first watched it I love Ten way to much
everything you said about the doctor is so on point and so relevant where the story goes in series 9. loved the reaction!
quick question who is area stark (if im saying that right) 16:03 also I want that bedroom
"She might meet someone she can't bear to lose ... " and it's so clear that Clara knows he's talking about her.
And so it came to pass that the players took their final places, making ready the events that were to come.
Another great, thoughtful and insightful reaction - l love these soooo much and it's so great that you hit it on the nail with each one! Thanks Shayla! 😎
"A Girl has no name..."
Season 9 is by far my fav series
9:55 Great great speech!!
Some faces are just meant to be the Doctor
I was like "Did i just sit here for like 15 minutes only for you to forget about the window?! I wanna see it!!!" and then you remembered, thank god :D
The delivery of the line "That happens.....I believe," is soul shattering.
Yeah, the diary is a kind of "easter egg", it used to be a 400 or 500 year old diary back when Patrick Troughton played the Doctor.
500 years @D Ayres :)
it was so weird seeing another part of shaylas room apart from the green wall
Capaldi is the Doctor...!
There's a reason the Doctor doesn't go around granting immortality to everybody, and the next episode does a good job of showing us why.
I love the Pompeii flashback and the Doctor realizing why he has this specific face now. (On a side note, it was established in Classic Who that Time Lords can model their appearance on people that they've seen in the past. We saw it happen once with the Doctor and once with another character.)
peter was also on torchwood
So glad you reacted to the first episodes with Maisie in, she's good in anything.
So excited by your reaction to the this, and why he choose this face 😊 👏 and your setup 😂 - now that's dedication, thank you
“It’s Arya Stark!” These is why I wanted to see you react to this episode 😬
We’re having the favorite Doctor discussion? Haha.
I have a funny way of looking at which Doctor is my favorite- I look at which actor and which writer gelled to create the best Doctor. I’d have to say Tennant written by Moffat (ie Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library) is my favorite incarnation of the Doctor. But Capaldi, for character growth and consistent quality. And I think that growth is possible Because Moffat was head writer, So he could develop Capaldi’s Dr. over a longer-term
I may be the only one, but i would say this is my favorite episode in possibly the best season of new Who. The emotional power, the humor, Capaldi's acting, the answer to his question from back in 8x01, then seeing what that realization does to him...just a tour de force all around.
Your comments on immortality were right on point BTW...you could see at the end he realized he went too far.
You would think that about seeing the same face before, but it's happened before with the Colin Baker (6th Doctor actually trying to kill the 5th Doctor in classic Who story Arc of Infinity!
HERE. WE. GO!
Geronimoooo!
Great episode reaction this episode is one of my favorites in DW season 9 because it has Maisie Williams in it she's such a great actress I was so pleased to learn that as well as being in Game Of Thrones that she decided to do Doctor Who season 9 as well.
😉👍👌💖
I knew you'd love it when Masie showed up. Didn't you love the last two episodes?
THANK GOD YOU DIDN'T SKIP THESE! I knew Maisie would make you smile!
The Benny Hill Theme! Classic!
Shayla: "He might be my favorite Doctor!" Tennant: "Lemme just remind this girl real quick..."
Ashildr turning Immortal... That's ominousness if ever there was any.
Love your Reactions! Waiting for "The Woman Who Lived"! -"Ren".
"Just save someone"
Capaldi is definitely my favourite Doctor and he is almost undeniably the best actor to take the role. He makes the worst written episodes good just through acting.
The Doctors arrogance doing that to her, leads to him makeing his suffering to come worse.
Yes :D peter capaldi is my favourite doctor, mainly because the seasons 8 and 9 they were awesome
9:59 always gives me goosebumps!
Aaahh yay, I've waited for this reaction!! So glad you liked the episode, I love this two parter and I'm already excited for the next video!!
Maisie Williams and Peter Capaldi...what else could you ask for?
I've been waiting for this reaction!!!!!
So Glad you did a reaction to EP 5 and are going to do Ep 6! You would've kicked yourself in the Butt if you didn't and missed out on Masie's Doctor Who Appearance!
When Masie was first announced for this series, everyone lost their WHOVIAN minds. Then when the first trailer came out and it had her in the trailer, Everyone's mind started racing. Who could it be! Everyone thought for sure she was gonna SUSAN. or maybe even Jenny! But her character is a really good one!
Is it a MyPillow😆? Well, at least no one is sleeping at 1 pm, so you don’t have to be quite.
We make our room as dark as possible when sleeping. We purchased those blackout curtains, and sewed Velcro to them. Then we put lines of Velcro around the window, and other than clocks, the room is pitch black at night. Admittedly we didn't get the best blackout curtains, and now light does show through during the day, but even that isn't very much.
The Doctor don't gives immortality to the companions because he don't like to travel with immortals
you need to watch all of this year if you can . they all lead to something beautiful .
I've always thought that you were sitting on the floor with your back against a wall in the corner 😅
Yup, and there's good reasons to not give people immortality - if you've not already read it, check out The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - specifically the story of Wowbagger the infinitely prolonged - man accidentally made immortal, which shows just how badly immortality can affect someone who wasn't born to be immortal..
Why Not Torchwood?
I'm glad you're enjoying this season! Doctor Who is a fascinating fandom, most fandoms are pretty much on the same page about most things. But, with DW, everyone has a different fav doctor, fav season, fav companion, etc. No one can seem to wholly agree on the quality of a season. For me, when I first watched this season I thought it was one of the weakest, and I thought everyone agreed, but these comments tell me otherwise! It's cool to read why people like it so much and to hear your reasons as well.
Holy TARDIS of Gallifrey! Tennant in thumbnail spoiler much? [ShakesFist] Why I Oughta! Lol. Great reaction. Sorry your edit didn't also include the recall from 11 that he speaks baby and the fire in the water speech. But understood there was a lot in this episode to include.
Love your videos Shayla x
I'm the doctor and I save people.😣
I’ve been curious about Shayla’s setup. And now I know.
Remember the sun is your friend.
I actually missed this when this season first came out; that turned out to make a bait line much more shocking for me.
I completely forgot its Thursday today ahhh
