Yankees lost all three to open the season . Rickey Henderson was hurt in ST and didn’t play in all three games of the opening series. I watched this broadcast live
The difference in the Yankees not winning the division in 1985 was their record vs. Detroit they went 3-9 while the Blue Jays went 7-6 a difference of 4 wins.
The Yanks got swept by the Red Sox at Fenway to start the season, which was one of the reasons Yogi Berra got fired and started his self-imposed exile.
Bill Buckner was a very good defensiven firstbaseman. It is a shame he is only known for Game 6 in 86 when McNamara should have replaced him due to bad ankles.
The Red Sox swept this series and took two of three in the next series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees won the last seven games, sweeping a three and four game series later in year. That Yankee team was their best of the 80s, but Toronto was a tad better.
Yeah Rickey Henderson, Dave Winfield, Willie Randolph, and Don Baylor were “stiffs”. The team you’re watching here won 97 games. They weren’t stiffs. Under today’s playoff system they might have even won it in October.
Love the 1980's Yankees and the never ending tinkering and rotating cast of characters. Even with the Best overall MLB Win/Loss record in the 1980's, they just could not get over the top...
*The 1985 New York Yankees could've easily won it all. They were really good. Second best record in all of baseball that year. Unfortunately for them, the best record that year was in their division (Blue Jays), and only the 4 division winners (2 in each league) went to the playoffs back then. No Central Divisions, and no Wild Cards. Oh well. It just wasn't meant to be. It is what it is.*
And yet the Royals beat Toronto in a seven game series coming back from 3-1 in the ALCS and the WS. Having a great reg season record doesn't guarentee a championship.
@@ButlerFam *Who knows what would've happened in the World Series, but it would've been an upset if the Royals had won the ALCS against the Yankees that year, because the Yankees were something like 7-5 against the Royals in 1985. It took the 1993 Giants finishing 103-59 before baseball finally expanded the playoffs.*
@@superbrownbrown The Yankees got screwed out of postseason several times in the 80s because of the tough competition in the AL East, whereas the AL West was so weak you could steal a championship like the Twins in 1987 with a record that would have been good for fifth place in the AL East. That was the reason why the wildcard format was necessary IMO and I don't miss the days of geography impacting your ability to win a title or not.
@@epaddon *True, but the final nail in the coffin for those who argued against playoff expansion was the 1993 San Francisco Giants, who finished the regular season at 103-59 and had to go home because tbe Braves were 104-58, meanwhile the Philadelphia Phillies won their division with a 97-65 record. To be fair, the Phillies did knock off the Braves, but the Giants didn't even get a chance to compete.*

This series got Yogi fired.
Remmber back in the days we woild cut school to watch opening day when baseball started those were the days
I know this is a Yankees channel but as a Sox fan, thank you for the upload. This was a year before I was born so I never got to see this game.
You are the man!!!! I’ve been dying to see more Yankee games from 1985!!
THANK YOU!!
Even though I think we got killed in this game lol
Nice to see this whole game put together! Thanks!
Except for the top of the 1st

The phone in Yogi's office was probably ringing before he got in the clubhouse.
wiedep Steinbrenner the Jerk makes the call as usual
Very uncomfortable moment at 1:09 mark. Bill White was not thrilled.
Oof that was cringe worthy. It’s at the 1:09:00 mark btw

I went to Fenway alot in the 80s and 90 s and I can honestly say Boggs was the greatest contact hitter I ve ever seen
I think Carew was the best I've seen followed by boggs and Gwynn. But their is not much separating them.
I grew up in the 80 s and 90;s a yankee fan upload more old Yankee games thanks
PBP: Spencer Ross and Phil Rizzuto

There's nothing wrong with you that a few taps to your dome with a Louisville Slugger wouldn't fix.

Oh Spencer! Woopsie
Great - I was at this game - it was so cold underneath the grandstand
i can smell the cigarettes and the beer even now!

0:18 Hoping for a remake of that ad featuring the Yankees of today (Hicks, LeMahieu, Torres, Cole, Paxton, Boone, Stanton, Judge)
Just imagine if don Mattingly had those guys instead of the stiffs he played with
Stanton still play for the Yankees???

Up load Yankee openers 1986 and 1987 or even 1988; if you have thanks

The never-ending carousel of managers probably did not help.

Why not let everyone in?
The winners, the whiners and the wieners?
Niekro looks 60 lol
Yogi didn’t last long as the manager in ‘85. Wouldn’t return for decades.
why wasnt rickey henderson playing?
He was injured when the season started.....which was the chief reason for the 6-10 start that unfortunately led to Yogi's firing.
@@epaddon the other players should have done better
Mattingly was there. that means Rickey should have been the MVP
