I can relate to this soo much, my parents are immigrants. I am first generation and trying to find my place here and what I like. I feel pressured bc I know my parents have sacrificed a lot for me and my siblings to have a the life that we have now. My ultimate goal is to retire my parents in a couple years.
Keeping grounded in two worlds at the same time, it can be hard at times. Now that I’m older I realize how much of an asset it is. You’ll find your place, but remember you are American, and it’s your duty to your parents to show them how far you can go. Just remember they left their country thinking anything is an improvement and they were right. You’re on the ground floor and the only way is up 😀
We all have that same goal, us being the children of being immigrant parents. Keep grinding, achieving honor and being great for your family is worth the fight
As an immigrant myself I can relate to it. There is so much opportunities and climbing the ladder have cost me even being discriminated many times because some people are just jealous of the success of others specially those who come from a different country. But I don't care I just keep moving forward with hard work no matter what. I sometimes see people complaining about their lives but I just tell myself how easy they have it but they just can't see it because they were born with those privileges.
seeing people complaining about their life when they are clearly so privileged made me realize how I'm privileged myself even tho my life is harder and lonelier than most people around me.
It depends on where your parents come from. I have a friend whose parents are from Iceland. He's a straight up slacker. I'm not judging. He admits it. I'm using his example to make my point. Nobody tells blonde blue-eyed Icelandic people to go home.
Thank you for this. This was very inspiring and too close to home for me as I am a child of immigrants from Vietnam. All the love and thanks for sharing your story.
Thank you for sharing your story . It takes a lot of bravery and insight to do as you did . People who speak from their privileged corners may lack the empathy and intelligence to digest it but from someone who also had the lived experience : thank you for this video !
Lol they don't. They think they do but then there are international students who clearly take the competition to next level as they're more on the side of 'survival mode' as they plan not to go back to their country and have responsibilities like getting PR, making friends, cultural shock, loneliness, financial problems due to conversion rate (eg. India to the USA or Canada or UK!). The list is endless as they're really far away from their hometown. In cases like COVID international students are stuck and cannot even travel back to their families even in situations like someone's death
No, we are refugee-immigrants. It goes both ways. We are still considered immigrants, we migrated over here from another area. But yes we are refugees as well.
I was a little disappointed that she referred to the Hmong, who are displaced, forced to run for their lives, as immigrants. Immigrants had the choice to relocate to a foreign country. Refugees didn’t. I am proud to be a Hmong refugee, a person of no land, no country. And I am very grateful for the opportunity to have a second chance at life.
Mortar and Pestle Tshuaj Khib thiab Qws Txob The distinction isn’t as clear as some people put it. Not talking about this specific group, but Maybe people didn’t immigrate at that time but were forced to leave, maybe they would have because of poverty and better opportunities.
Immigrant parents have a short-term desperation because they are financially uncomfortable. This speaker is deluded if she thinks that children raised in 1st world comfort and different conditions will be the same
Wow this is so not true. Most people that are kids of immigrants work much less. I hate these videos where one persons experience leads them to make blanket statements.
May I ask how you came to that conclusion? Most children of immigrants work extremely hard. Whether you look at college, professional school, or higher echelons of business/medicine, despite being minorities in this country, Asians excel, and many of them thank their parents for the opportunity to do so. (The reason I only talk about Asians is because I am an Asian myself and can talk extensively about the family structure and culture that makes it so that kids feel obligated to work hard).
@@ImKyuSugardust Well from my experience the parents work harder than the kids. They had to because they came with nothing whereas the kids are more spoiled. Maybe depends on the group. Maybe what you’re describing is a cultural trait rather than an immigrant trait.
@@ImKyuSugardust In America Not really children of immigrants, parents are extremely strict about school cause they want them be better them that why most children dont work just school. I know in other country's children are hard workers cause of their economy very poor economy. Im a immigrant and i have to work cause its just my mom paying the bills. But if its children of immigrant mom & dad no need to work just school, College, good career. God bless to all immigrants hard working people
Failure is not an option for us.

Same here. I pray you have found You're place?Or better yet, made a place you're own! God bless
You’re second generation no first.
I hope you reach your goal. Keep on keeping on!!

Love your mindset, thank you for watching. I hope you keep challenging yourself and people.

Hi!
First generation American here, my parents are from Albania and I can relate. Thank you SO MUCH for talking about this.

As a 1.75 generation kid, I can relate to so much of this
Necessity driven individuals: “are those who have a why and bare any how.” As Nietzsche puts it. find your why and live with a purpose.
Thank you for this. This was very inspiring and too close to home for me as I am a child of immigrants from Vietnam. All the love and thanks for sharing your story.
Thank you for watching. Means so much.
Same, I'm also a child of a Vietnamese immigrant and also relate to a lot of this

Thank you so much Colleen! This was a very touching video...
You're such an inspiration!
Thank you so much for watching. I hope it resonates a little too.
Failure doesn't have to be an option.
Thanks for reminding me -- The "Immigrant Mindset"!!!
This just has me crying non-stop is a complete mirror or my life …
Completely different mindset than American children

Yeah. America is about to put an end to all that. 🤣🤣

This video is not true because I’m a child of immigrants and I don’t work hard I’m too lazy.
Ur Latino that's why
She wrote this whole speech because her kid is trying to quit oboe lessons
