I NEED this tableless format to become a permanent thing from now on. It works SO well for Candela!
This is a really cool way to do RPG; taking it off the table and making it feel more Interactive.
Seemed like it took a bit for everyone to acclimate to utilizing the stage for their role play, but Khary did a great job of owning it &, seemingly, inspiring the others to jump in. I hope you guys do more of these “Performance RPG” types of things.
The theatrical approach like this works really well for more... Gothic-dramatic games like Candella Obscura, Call of Cthulhu, and Vampire: the Masquerade. They were really made for the theater kids.
They currently have a survey out where they are clearly testing the waters to see what kind of reception this format would have, so do let them know!
Well we all know liam is the theatrical one. The others gotta catch up lolol
Very nice of Taliesin to let us into his home.
This will never get old, and I'm here for it.
@@impofstpete727neither does he 😂
Adding an element of LARP is such a smart move for Candela!! It definitely fells like it was made for it instead of traditional tabletop settings
This staged setting works SO well for Candela! I hope that this is something that could be replicated on a smaller scale in-studio for future Circles.
Agreed. I think Candela works better as an armchair game than a tabletop game. Using a cozy setup with chairs around a fireplace I think would work great for the regular games.
@@Dfarrey exactly!
@@Dfarreyagreed!! like similar to the 4sd/fireside chat stages, a setting that allows them to explore the space!
Hell yes.
The occasional moments where they all get up and physically act out what’s going on were so awesome to see, 100% this should be done going forward
Wow Taliesin invited so many people to his dimension!
That was awesome - especially the more acting-focussed play style and the inclusion of the audience! And: the meta-humor was on point. Actors playing actors and making fun of actor behavior was pure satire. Really a nice blend of a lot of new components for public RPG.
Candela is designed for Live Shows !!! It just shine so much as a system on stage
My favorite line is when Evelyn is made to stand in for the camera shot and she just casually goes "scooch her" regarding Idella's dead body on the floor LOL!! That had me laughing so hard.
Really hoping we see this circle another time - or maybe one or two, Evelyn was hilarious and Chey came in understanding the assignment.
1:42:32 "It's a fun device" with the curtsy is one of my favorite things that Matthew Mercer has ever done!!
Can I just say: having this much trust in your players and, for the players - each other, that you can just let them completely run with a thread, then seamlessly pull everyone back on track? I am in awe and appreciate and adore these incredible performers. BRAVO!
Marisha and Laura looked so gorgeous in this!
They always do. 😍 Everyone looked amazing.
When don’t they? In fact, why is the entire cast of Critical Role so unreasonably attractive? 😑
Are they ever not gorgeous?
@@Neurodivergent-j1f It's a symptom of playing DnD, it makes everyone who plays it incredibly hot
The stage presence for this performance was stunning! Candela truly shines when the players can do space work. More of this, please, audience or no.
Not going to lie, Spencer wasn't my favourite when it came to the GM's for the different CO chapters, and CO itself is not usually my kind of genre. But live like this, way more engaging and fun! They totally fed off the audience energy without it being crazy (like the way some of the CR lives end up feeling). I really hope they do more live sessions like this.
Same
Please, more live Candela!! This is so good!!
I already loved Candela on set, but this is another level.
Spencer's use of audience participation to help drive the players' suspense is incredible! What isn't showed here is that during the break, before the folks come back out on stage, Spencer askes the audience to make "whispers and electric static" noises whenever he waves his hands like the force. That's what's happening in part two of the show after the break.
Spoiler for the ending
.
.
.
Evelyn: “I’m going to temporarily kill myself to trap the monster in my body.”
Jackie: “NO! Let’s kill you for real!”
Chey: “NO! Let’s trap the monster in my much stronger and more dangerous body!”
Lester holding the figurative toaster over the bathtub: “Guys wtf.”
Laura and Marisha are so funny in this as per usual 🤭
It must feel SO GOOD, to ask Matthew Mercer, "How do you want to do this?"
When was this?
@@DomFalance try 3:37:35
@@PhilBoswell Thank you for making the timestamp for us. :)
To everyone responsible for the costumes, make up and stage: Bravo, you nailed it! This looks absolutely amazing.
You mean Taliesin right ? 😉
right?! do we know who was responsible for the stage dressing? and I'm guessing they were each responsible for their own costume but i could very well be wrong and either wait I'm in awe
1:41:20 that scene with all of them getting up and amping up the actiong was great and you can see how much potential this kind of format has. They have a survey out currently where they are clearly trying to see what people think of it and it seems like they would like to do more circles with this "table-less" format if people are interested on it, so if that's something you want go let them know!
Where is the survey? I’d love to let them know, I enjoyed this so much!
@@ashleynichole8687 not sure where it is officially but you can find it on the CR subreddit
Same!
I absolutely ADORE the physicality the players were able to do on stage. It really suits the genre and lets them have even more dramatic moments and movements when they can stand up and walk around the space. I'd really love if they could do more Candela episodes like this. Not necessarily the audience show, but if they could shoot their episode on some kind of wide space like this.
As much as I loved the previous Candela games, this particular one really got to me. I was genuinely scared and shocked and happy. Candela really works in this live interactable play format.
27:46 Laura was so happy that she got the gnat 😂
Loving it!
The cast performing like in a costume play on stage, not hidden behind table, great roleplay and acting - it's theatre! Yes!
2:11:49
You can’t hear it very well but just after Spencer asks for the name, I was the idiot who shouted out “DAGGERHEART!” At the first opportunity. Absolutely made my day that Laura took the suggestion!
Went to the live show expecting to get middle seating and coincidentally picked the camera people’s seating, ended up getting upgraded to orchestra left. Was so, so happy!
Unforgettable performance, love you all, so happy to have been a part in the experience.
Spencer runs Candella SO FREAKING WELL! He really knows how to embrace the horror
His train heist was my favourite opener of any tabletop RPG campaign I’ve seen. Initially I thought this show’s opening was a bit much, but in retrospect he actually did an excellent job of letting people know exactly what they were in for.
I'll admit, I've been really warming up to him as a GM, I really like the way he sets the scene and describes the horror
i absolutely love the way candela looks on stage and i was so intrigued by this story all the way through, with finding the bodies in the crates and realising what the biology professor's tech did and everything
what an absolute DELIGHT to have khary back with the cast. every circle has been incredible and the stage setting of this one added s o much, I hope we get this again because the inclusion of the audience as the bleed whispers was INSPIRED
2:04:19 The cast reaction to audience participation
Gaming with Khary Payton is now on my bucket list. OMG he is awesome.
Taliesin - Czepuku
Me - bless you
Ashley Johnson - "Stop it!"
Candela played this way with players free to move around reminds me so much of Sagas of Sundry. I hope they continue going that direction, I love seeing players be more physical as they play. It's so much fun!
Khary's look tho 👌😍 showstopping!
Back in the day, they didn't give sides out.... they gave the whole script. Laura's character would know the whole story from the script.
I'm shipping Jackie and Evelyn and nobody can stop me
Seconded. I'm shipping Chey and Lester as well 😂❤
@@honeyhannijung righttt? they've got such a good rivals (enemies if you squint because there was a mini life threat lol) to lovers dynamic, especially if you toss in a little bit of having a conversation and finding an understanding of one another into the mix
considering im also shipping them? no way in hell am i stopping you lmao. the scene where evelyn gets in the tub and jackie is the first one to say "absolutely fuckin not" is on repeat in my head lol
@@honeyhannijungoh i was 100% shipping those two omfg
Anyone else get a John Constantine vibe off Matt with his look and accent of choice?
It’s official; Candela Obscura is my top fav series. D&D campaigns are fun but seeing these group of actors improv with the CO mechanics is GOLD!
oKAY BUT WHAT DID LIAM GIVE TO THE AUDIENCE MEMBER I WANNA KNOW
Yes! I thought it might come into play within the story at some point
Absolutely loved seeing this live! The vibes in the room were fantastic.
This is by far the best on stage actual play I've ever seen!
Sometimes Marisha's plans are a little hair brained but I have to say it certainly adds to the drama of things !! I wish to know how her brain works so I can better understand her insights. She is such a delight 😍😍
This show was so funny and horrific and entertaining. It was great to see everyone on stage having fun. Matt having a chance to play is always a showcase of his acting skills.
I just love that Taliesin's earpiece over his left ear makes his ear look elven at the right angle. Unintentional but won me over immediately.
I was thinking that when I saw it. Very fitting.
Half-fey or just got too comfortable and let the human facade slip!
No you just caught an angle where his glamour failed for a bit and revealed his true nature as an archfey
this is a good one, the live setting where they can get up and move helps so much! i love it
They currently have a survey out where they are clearly testing the waters to see what kind of reception this format would have, so do let them know!
This was a fantastic experience. I’ve had a hard time getting into Candela, but this one had me hooked. I love the full stage roleplay, it really brought everything to life.
same here. I want more of the Silver Screen and I want more Live Candela. I think the stage is where Candela was created to be unbeknownst to Spencer at the time.
Guys. Why is Matt Mercer dressed like Jonathan Sims
Omg 👁️
Thank fuck I thought I was the only person thinking this
oh my god *that's* who he's dressed like! i couldn't pinpoint why his outfit looked so familiar lmao
Marisha was on fire this game with the references and the burns, like damn, that's a good head
I want all Candela Obscura content to be presented this way from now on. It's so fucking good.
Oh shit yes
It's a new genre of theatre and I hope drama schools and improv groups all over take to it!
Khary's stage presence is incredible. Loved this whole adventure!
Ok so... Dear CR, where can I purchase a copy of that Taliesin portrait? Asking for a very interested party. Thank you!
How dare you, that Dorian Grey picture is all that’s keeping him alive! /s
@@Luneowl We should have guessed by now what the secret to his immortality was!
This was an absolute delight and I definitely wouldn't be opposed to seeing an in-studio version of a circle in this standing format should that ever be an option. This system and world works so very well for it.
Liam is one of the funniest people in the world. Him doing a bit as Cosmo is utterly amazing!!!!
Time stamp for when he comes in?
@@sjj393I don't feel like this is needed, but 1:48
Apparently he was in the theater lobby interacting with people as Cosmo, staying in character!
So happy to see Cosmo continuing on! Such a fun character
I adore Liam's appearance. Taliesin did a spectacular job introducing and book -ending the story and the cast were brilliant. I expected no less. I love that Khary was a part of it and I've said it before..they're all top tier actors and they all need to be making big films.
Was I the only one getting Candela horror + The Prestige type of vibes? I thought it was an incredible one shot and Khary Payton was even more phenomenal than I could of hoped for.
First seeing his costume was a major shock factor...and it took me a moment to catch that his right eye was red! WHOA!!! I'm definitely reminded of Rajan Savarimuthu/Noshir Dalal!
Is there gonna be another episode of The Circle of the Silver Screen
Right I loved all their characters!
This was basically a theater show. I liked it very much
Liam muthaf***in O'Brien, ladies and gentlemen. Lol. That's why he's my favorite. I absolutely love him. That made me so happy.
This entire group makes me so happy. Spencer is such a good old boy. Having Khary back is freaking phenomenal! And of course Marisha, Matt and Laura are all fantastic. I'm SO happy to see Matt be a player for Candela!!! Aaahhhhh!!!!
And I absolutely love the set up for this live episode! It is SO cool! I would love to play with a set up like this!! And I love how Spencer tells a story! 😭🩷
It was so so brilliant to have this on stage and let the players move around. Also the inclusion of the audience for sound is everything!! ❤️❤️
Matt is just John Constantine, and it's great
Omfg i watched the short and lost it immediately i am cackling and kicking my feet rn that idea and execution of the audience whispers was fucking fantastic
I was so excited to see Cosmo again!!
Everybody was, and who can blame them?
Cosmo Grimm (AKA Old Man Liam)(AKA Granddad O'Brien) is always a delight.
Now I want Critical Role to perform Agatha Christie's play The Mousetrap.
Mollie Ralston: Ashley
Giles Ralston: Travis
Christopher Wren: Liam
Mrs Boyle: Laura
Major Metcalf: Taliesin
Miss Casewell: Marisha
Mr Paravicini: Sam
Detective Sgt. Trotter: Matt
This episode was crazy! The staging, the costumes, the story-whoa
I wanted tickets so badly, but I'm in East Asia (and it's the plane ticket that I can't afford... the tickets to this were so affordable!)
3:25:42- Not so great when Laura wants to sacrifice herself for the good of the team now is it Marisha?
FUCK, I LOVE HOW PETTY THIS IS 10/10
Oh god I thought this part was hilarious! 😂
I am in love with Candela Obscura on stage! If you came to the Seattle area I would go in a heartbeat!!!
everybody looks gorgeous! matt i love the hair!
1:17:44 This moment reminded me of when Laura tried to stop Sam from eating or drinking unsavory stuff. 🤣 Along with her audible sigh afterward, these were real mom moments. 😄
Khary's performance in this was insane 👏
It was an amazing show. The potential for stage-play RP was riveting. The odd laughter from the crowd killed tense moments, but that's how live theatre goes.
I BARELY STARTED THE VIDEO BUT I JUST HAD TO SAY THAT TALIESIN LOOKS GORGEOUS!
Matts voice skills are just superlative, obvious I know, it just needs to be remarked on for the billionth time.
Dude! That was so cool, seeing Spenser engaging the audience to create a sound sound effect like that!
i say we need a part two in which we figure out how greta did know they were in idella's house
😲 Awesome ! ❤ great episode, players and theme.🎉 I got the rule book and played a Demo at UK Games Expo this weekend. Met some fab folks.
3:37:41 iconic! Face.
I really enjoyed this thank you for the production! This was amazing
PS. Thank you, Spencer and fellow team members and staff, for taking us on a wonderful adventure. I bet it was even better in person.
Laura giving big Lucille Ball energy!
7:45 opening cinematic
8:56 game starts
Khary is such a phenomenal artist
Really liked what they did with the format, tying that in with the story and them all being actors, investigating a film set. Tying all of that together was a neat idea.
Spencer's command over atmosphere and theme is fascinating and inspiring!
I have to ask, the QnA in the beginning, were those real audience members questions? Or were people planted beforehand?
The questions came from real audience members, who asked them. But they had VIP tickets and had seen the session zero. When the cast had left the stage after session zero, Spenser asked what question could be asked 'as someone who saw the premier of the movie'. He then picked some, wrote the questions down and where they sat, so that Taliesin could call them in the beginning.
Wow… this was one of the coolest live shows ever! This is the way Candela should be played!!
this was such a blast! was so thrilled when it was announced that spenser would be gm in this, and having watched it as the recording was aired over on twitch, he did not disappoint!! The players were just incredible, too!! What a performance y'all
I love how Laura's perv can be seen at the back of the theater, and she doesn't even have to say a word... "I toss you on the bed!" All she does is smile, and the entire audience knows what she's thinking. lol
Matt's face HYWTDT...Priceless!
Whoever that was in the green dress wheeling Liam out is so beautiful
CR producer Ashley Middlebrook, you might remember her from one of Sam's ad reads as "Dr. Uta Middlebrecht."
1:55:40 I love Matt's excitement in this moment!
Marisha literally sounds like Hazel Copperpot, and I'm all here for it.
Khary's either really pushing for the Chey x Lester Ship, or really having fun teasing Matt XD his suggestive inuendo question of "know me" was hilarious, but the scene of taking off his tie and walking over to bandage him is frickin sexy lol
Only a third of the way in and I’m so invested. This stage, the acting and the production really brings the characters and their relationships to life. Ttrpgs are such a great way to make performance art more interesting.
This kind of reminds me of Chaosuim's setup. It's pretty cool.
I wish chaosuim had more engagement cause it’s so fucking good
@@avenovum148 it is!! I enjoy their setup and how they bring in actors to play "NPCs". Oh, and the props!
Man I wish I got to see this live, the intro always sends chills through my body let alone this entire performance!
This was incredibly engaging!! 💋 oh, Evelyn! Lol. They were all great, and the combination of different "Stagecraft" came together marvelously! Thank you for this bright spark of live theater to those of us who couldn't be there!!! You all looked amazing!!! 🎉 🎥 👻
Spenser is such a cinematic GM, very interesting and different style
Matt gave off some Constantine vibes
