Something about Monk's style of swinging just makes me laugh out loud. His playing possesses such a hilarious sense of humor, both rhythmically and in his choice of intervals.
How majical minutes ago I told a pianist friend Monk plays calculus while we play arithmetics. And in sharing your laughter, I realized he makes laughter in the context Niels Bohr''s quantum physics confused Einstein.
To have such talent and an absolute connection to the instrument that it conveys what is in your soul instantly … I’m sure mere human words cannot describe the satisfaction from it. I can only admire in amazement.
Monk's hand position on the keyboard would drive piano teachers crazy.BUT he is so accurate in his playing; doesn't miss a note.Monk is a total phenom.
I mean, I love Monk!!!!!!! I think Monk is advanced both rhythmically and tonally. Now, consider those who love him rhythmically, but don't like him tonally. Are you convinced those are rhythmically inept too?
Buddy I totally meant this in a more tongue and cheek way and to compliment/point out how advanced Monk's rhythmic sense was. I am happy to see you edited your post, in which you called me a bitch, with hindsight and see how being insultful actually hurts your credibility.
Yeah, I agree, it was a little bit too much with the insulting. Still, I think your point is on bad logical grounds, though. The logic is easily fixed, and I think you know how, and I also think you can imagine what I will say next if you do :)
I think you have totally misunderstood what I said quite frankly. I don't just enjoy Monk because of his rhythm, it's the whole package i enjoy. I still think it is true that most people who don't like his music simply don't understand where he was coming from rhythmically. Like I said, I meant it in a more jokingly and tongue and cheek way. I just think you are taking it too seriously.
Still if I interpret your comment in a tongue in cheeck or jokingly way, it has some logical content. I think it cannot be interpeted away even if you say it's a joke. I think jokes that ignore it's logical content are not that common (would love examples of this!). If it's a joke, then I'll just point out the flaw in the joke. In this last post you've written a new and edited version of the comment which doesn't have the same flaw.
Agreed. Monk is one the great American composers in history. A true genius in the world of jazz, but more importantly a singular voice in the musical landscape as a whole.
I am always shocked when I watch Monk. He is pure electricity. He dances around the music treating it as a living breathing entity speaking to him as he speaks it.
Guaguanko! He’s playing Rumba out of that drums called piano!!!aguaaaa!!!!! Just got me to dance At 4.00 am!!!!haaaaa!!! Thanks Monk for the Clave! Even the ring make him play different!!!! The team sounds right!
Monk in jazz like Picasso in drawing and sculpting, very hard to understand but any one love Mona Lisa. I'm a fan of Monk even if I don't understand all his hard genius style.
He most likely didn't write it himself, but the person who did, and the pianist who got raped, most definitely was influenced by this...how could they not be? But if Family Guy allows us to appreciate this, there must be some gain, right?
Like all geniuses, makes you want to practice more...or just give it up. Also, heard that Oscar Peterson didn't care for Monk. I don't get that. Robert Burnett.
Monk's improvising and ability to support a solo are vastly underrated. Not to mention his impeccable sense of rhythm. My only criticism, the only possible, is that he has no sense of humor.

Happy one hundredth birthday, October 10, 2017, from your hometown Rocky Mount, NC. Wow, what a talent!
What a pleasure to watch him and Charlie after so many years of listening. My favorite right there !

Incredible. You have to love this man. Not of this world.
God, seems like there was an abundance of mind-blowingly good bebop sax players back in the say
Absolutely astounding! Monk is my favorite Jazz musician of all time...what a band
What's you favorite color ?
The gangsta of Jazz, a complete and total original.

Easily one of the greatest pieces ever performed in all of music, never mind genre.
I agree man, there's probably one hundred tunes, just in that tune alone!
Great for sure. He’s got mojo
Without a doubt!
Agreed. Monk is one the great American composers in history. A true genius in the world of jazz, but more importantly a singular voice in the musical landscape as a whole.
You say that just because is black like you. The best music ever are Bob Dylan, Joao Gilberto, Pixinguinha, Jobim..

Thelonius Monk was a musical genius that we are still trying to wrap our minds around.
Me gusta la buena música, gracias!!!!
Amazing, love the way he changes hands without missing a note.
Charlie is tremedous on sax and Thelonious out of space ....fantastic
Mister Monk belongs to my heroes
Nice! My favorite Monk tunes, Light Blue, with Johhny Griffin, and Ugly Beauty.
20:09 Ben Riley imitating Monk's dancing; Rouse cracking up.
It looks like Charlie saw him on the TV monitor.
@@goedeck1 I is a lovely tribute to the great solos!

A Great work of art

crazy good
GENIUS
mucho talento!
Some serious thoughts went into recording this just by the camera angles the triangle is always in view.
Sounds like Seth MacFarlane borrowed from this when he wrote the Family Guy theme.
+thisdudegotreal Thats what I was hearing too.

it's a fats waller song but
thelonious' version is a thing all it's own
more of like a reinterpretation than just a cover
Hasta mañana cielo💚💛
Brilliant!
Ben Riley.
Yes?
sublime

Love when he stands up and lets the band solo.
That Drummer is just phenomenal. I play drums. Jazz drummers are the best in my personal opinion.
When he stands up *_*
WAS ON HIS BEST HERE

Liking Monk and understanding Monk are two very things . I like Monk, a lot.
Do I understand or "stand" Monk?

One Poet and writer said he was an elephant on the keyboard. To me he’s like a punk rock Jazz Man. Lived hard. He was a rock star before they existed.
different styles is all that means. oscar was great, but not a musical genius.
Denemarken...heeft hem wel geinspireerd.

That was his sense of humor... ) :
Ernest Mendez, that was his sense of humor ) :
Kidding? You must have a sense of humor to play his way. Its playful. Serious people always have a comedic side. Just my thoughts
@@bobbynewman2509 perhaps you're right. But the fact that I've never seen a picture or video of him smiling or laughing is awfully damning.

Family Guy
