I would like to point out technical facts about the Crystal Blades technology which you mentioned. 1. Firstly, the operating temperature of blades mentioned as 2300 deg. C is in fact 2300 Deg Farenheit ! 2. Equi-axed EQ, directionally solidified DS and Single Crystal SX are the technical words used for the three blades shown in the program, of which the last SX is the needed technology. These are manufactured through investment casting technology. In SX technology, grain boundaries are totally eliminated to form the complete blade as a single crystal, hence the name and also why it's life is higher. 3. HAL has Russian technology and makes SX blades, but it is not as refined as West's. 4. Life of such blades on fighter engines is 2500 hrs not 25,000 hrs ! Even then it is much higher than non-SX blades. It's creep life is indeed 9 times, as you mentioned. 5. Blades do not have "holes" to cool then, they have highly complex shaped internal cooling passages, made through sacrificial Silica or Alumina based ceramic components called Ceramic Cores. 6. Blades are also thin, close to 0.5 mm wall thickness at critical places 7. Enhancement on temperature capability of these blades are due to the following : a. Thin walled design with very complex cooling passages b. SX technology using Ni based super alloys with Rhenium addition, which dramatically increases melting temperature. c. Thermal Barrier Coatings using EBPVD ( electron beam physical vapour deposition) process DRDO has developed this technology and has made these kinds of blades in numbers. It is a combination of ceramic core, investment casting and tooling technologies, not to mention about machining technology. However, as you rightly pointed out, unless India makes tens of thousands of these blades in a year, it is not cost effective. By the way, each engine with one high and one low pressure turbine stages, requires 180 to 200 blades. In addition to these, 500+ titanium alloy blades made through forging route will be needed in the compressor stages, for each engine.
